Bad lyrics in otherwise good songs

Name a song you like but has a line or two that's bad, and if you can, posit an alternative that would sound better. The replacement lyrics don't have to be great, just better than the original.

For me it's anything that rhymes with "door". It seems like the most obvious of rhymes and it's always jarring. Notable songs with it are "Grace Kelly" by Mika, and "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion.

In "Grace Kelly" - "walk out the door" as an alternative, I dunno, "you've hurt me before"

In "My Heart Will Go On" - "once more you open the door" could be "once more I'm yours forevermore"

Here's Grace Kelly sung by the Whiffenpoofs (the lead singer is Brennan Caldwell, known gay and now a full-stack developer since all the shows dried up).

Maybe they should have said “cellar door,” it’s considered one of the most beautiful words in the English language.

by Anonymousreply 2January 24, 2022 11:33 AM

R2 It still has "door" which is the jarring bit because it's so obvious in a rhyme.

Although that leads me to an awesome word, "phonaesthetics".

The big finale song in Diana: The Musical is called If (Light the World). At the climax she sings “I’ll light the world.” This sounds very narcissistic and insular, but the song is about doing good for others and looking outward. The lyric should be “Alight the world…” the idea of setting the world on fire and making changes, even if you have to burn it all down would be much more fitting.

"I said I didn't really want her ass."

I love this song, but that line always makes me laugh. Clunky, Pete!

"once more I'm yours forevermore" is worse and sounds illogical. How many times you gonna be theirs "forevermore"?

How about "once more I'll be your filthy whore"

"Lying naked on the floor"

R7 I always took that to be like Demi Moore in St. Elmo’s Fire, trying to kill herself with open windows, but nude on the floor.

Iron Maiden are the kings of this. Gorgeous verse lyrics set to beautifully rich and crafted music, that they then proceed to besmirch with really banal chorus lyrics.

‘Journeyman’ is probably the worst offender in their catalogue. A lovely and medlodious verse ballad about transcendental nomadry....until we get to the chorus..

[quote] 🎶 I KNOW what I want, I’LL SAY what I want/And NO-ONE can take it aWA—A-AY....

Strident and unambiguous, but, erm...really awful.

yeah but r8 before that line she sings "I'm cold and I am shamed"

That's because you're just lying naked on the floor, so cover yourself up dammit. It would maybe make sense if it was about being raped by someone she thought was a nice guy but Natalie explained explained it was about the emotional turmoil of a bad breakup. *rolls eyes*

R6 "door" is forever worse, regardless of the alternative. And "once more I'll be your filthy whore" doesn't go with the theme of the song.

I usually think of new lyrics for songs, but they're always...well...not "radio-friendly"...

by Anonymousreply 12January 24, 2022 4:33 PM

Madonna, who clearly has no “no” men….

“I took a pill and had a dream”

“Other cities make me feel like a dork.”

Teena Marie's classic "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)" written by Rick James, contains this gem:

"Once I was a white gazelle

On horseback, riding free..."

A gazelle on horseback? Just how much cocaine did it take for you to come up with this, Rick?

WHAT?!

by Anonymousreply 16January 25, 2022 1:29 AM

Mmm, stoned soul picnic.

The Beach Boys "Good Vibrations"..."she's giving me excitations".....really?

"Just Be Good to Me" by The S.O.S Band

She's essentially telling a player that she's ok with settling for just being one of his hoes as long as he's "nice" to her. A low self-esteem anthem, if I've ever heard one.

But it's still my jam.

It’s not Dylan’s best song by any means, but I always laugh during “Angelina” when he rhymes the title with “subpoena.” I’m not sure I’ve heard that word in any other song, ever.

Oh, Taylor… (smh):

Hey, hey, hey

Just think, while you’ve been gettin’ down and out about the liars

And the dirty, dirty cheats of the world

You could’ve been gettin’ down

To this sick beat

Fire and Desire, the epic duet between Rick James and Teena Marie:

"Since you've been gone, I don't think I've ever felt this way before".

Somebody needs to dig up Rick's body and give him an "oh dear" for that.

WTF, Peter Frampton?

by Anonymousreply 27February 12, 2022 10:06 PM

Wish that I could fly Into the sky So very high Just like a dragonfly

I'd fly above the trees Over the seas in all degrees To anywhere I please

Oh I want to get away I want to fly away Yeah yeah yeah

Oh I want to get away I want to fly away Yeah yeah yeah

"Young and Beautiful":

"All that grace, all that body

All that face, makes me wanna party"

by Anonymousreply 29February 12, 2022 10:47 PM

My heart will go on refers to someone who has died. Open the door...means opening the door to the other side, you moron. The lyric is perfectly consistent with the rest of the song, moron.
