Part of his problem was his drug use. I did a film with him in the early 90s. We had to delay reshoots several times in order for him to be released from drug rehab. From talk on the set, it wasn't his time in rehab. I don't know if this continued but it was certainly an issue in that part of his career. The "stars" of the movie were Dennis Hopper, Matthew Modine and Beatrice Dalle. Hopper was a total ass, who sent his production assistant to give instructions to other actors about interfering with his "eye line." Beatrice Dalle was French, and--I would swear---learned the entire film phonetically, English not being her first language. One of my scenes was with Matthew Modine, and I spent the better part of a day being driven back and forth across the MacArthur Causeway in a sports car, on the back of a flat bed truck. Modine could not have been nicer, and was a complete joy to work with. The rest of the movie was a "paycheck" that played a few art houses, and then went to video.

He did an interview over a decade ago, around 2010 or 2011, while he was in NYC filming an indie flick and they asked him about being a Latino actor in the 70s/80s and why he changed his name to a “white” one (Bauer is German).

He said that being Latino was a career kill card for most actors then, and very few could break into the mainstream unless they were 100% Americanized and Hollywood unaware they were Hispanic. The Rita Moreno’s were a minority, and even she was offered mostly shit roles. He (like most Cubans) was brought to Miami by his family as a kid in the 60s and right away he adopted the American way, learned English and made sure to only speak English, listened to American English music, never Spanish music etc. to benefit himself. It wasn’t like now, where a Latino can speak English and Spanish with most people having no problems. Back then if they heard you speaking Spanish you were placed in a small box and that limited opportunities. He also wouldn’t befriend other Latinos and only befriended “Americans”.

When he started he used one of his surnames, Echevarría, with a fake first name, Rocky. That was when he got cast in PBS’ groundbreaking series about a Cuban family living in the USA. He was 19 at the time and also a student at the University of Miami (where he met and became close friends with Ray Liotta). After that show ended he was told to change his name to a white one so no one in Hollywood knows he is Latino, which will open up more doors for him (he was planning on dropping the stage name Rocky anyway because it felt wrong as he got older but now was changing his last name too). He was not Steven (his birth name is Esteban) Bauer. His mother was part German and the German part of her families name was Bauer, so her took that name as his own. After that doors opened up for him that wouldn’t prior.

Sad thing is he said that although he played a Cuban in Scarface he wouldn’t have gotten the part if it was known he was actually Cuban. I think he eventually was open about being Cuban to promote Scarface and he was hardly ever offered good roles after.
