Hugh Hefner was a gay ally, was a vocal supporter for gay marriage and used Playboy to give gay rights activists a platform. I think we need to look at the fact human populations have always been resistant to change. Usually it took violent revolts, wars, famines or economic crashes to achieve actual social progress. What became culturally ingrained simply ends up passed down from generation to generation regardless of having no use anymore. People internalize culture and many do not even question why things are the way they are. It's all indoctrination.

The system of gender roles and men holding power is just a relic that is outdated system that benefited agricultural societies and aided population growth, stability and control. Basically every society adapted patriarchy except a few and it was because it was vastly beneficial for survival. It was only recently due to technological growth that we began shifting views and women became more involved in the work force and education. And the fact is men did not wake up one day and decide to oppress women. It was simply taught that it was the normal way of living and people (both men and women) just went with it and had little power to change things because most people were uneducated, poor and died before their 40s and producing children, earning money, food and protecting what littler property they had was far more important. The wealthy in power who were also educated and literate could change things did nothing because that system worked in extracting wealth from poor peasants. Patriarchy gave men privilege and power over women and children in their community but did not give men any power in greater society. If you were a poor and illiterate man, you were property of the state and could be killed and drafted to war and you still died poor. Only men from nobility and royalty had any real power.

Just like racism, homophobia and religion, sexism is taught by guardians and systematically passed down. Societies are slowly reforming and becoming more progressive but of course, we still have a long way to go. Secularization is still very recent and many fundamentalists have been opposing that. Women, gays and Black people have equality by law but many people will be prejudiced including those in power. The older ones especially so but they are dying out.

I can see both sides of the story. There’s the glitz and glam that could look very promising to a young girl living in a small town and wanting to be part of that elusive world without really understanding that they would be objectified.
