Jensen Ackles on Supernatural Prequel & Jared Padalecki: "I Messed Up"

If you've been following our coverage of Jensen Ackles's appearance on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast (which you can check out here), then you know The Boys and Supernatural actor has been a wealth of interesting content. Earlier this week, Ackles discussed his role as Soldier Boy on the Amazon series, and how his wife Danneel Ackles and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke (The Boys) helped him come around on the SPN series finale. This time around, Ackles goes back in time to last year and that "communication miscommunication" he had with his SPN co-star & friend Jared Padalecki when news broke that Ackles was developing an SPN prequel series (working title, "The Winchesters")- one that Padalecki wasn't aware of until the news broke to the public. What follows is a pretty extensive look back at what went down and what went wrong, with Ackles taking ownership for the initial miscommunication ("I messed up") while also putting the matter into a larger context.

"This was my first venture into producing and creating content, and I didn't want to jinx it at any cost," with Ackles going on to explain that he thought it best to just "shut up" about the project and run it on a need-to-know basis based on that "superstition." That said, Ackles also let it be known that Padalecki would be the first name on his list to tell exciting news like that to any other time ("sorry, mom").

"And then it was getting close to getting to the point where it was like, 'This is really happening." The studio had signed off on it and now the network was getting involved. We still didn't have a script- in fact, we just got it [a script] last week. So that was back in February or something so it was very early on. We had a concept essentially, and you know when you start getting the studio and you start getting the network involved you start getting a lot of people… a lot of eyes." As Ackles explains it, the more chefs involved in stirring the pot meant more chefs who could leak the recipe (to beat an analogy to death). News of the project made its way to Deadline Hollywood, who gave the players involved a heads-up while Ackles was on set in Toronto that they were going to run news of the prequel series being in development.

"I should've known Jared has the emotional maturity of a child getting her first period. Also, Jared, stay off Twitter"

by Anonymousreply 1January 21, 2022 6:05 AM

To me, Jensen will always a homophobic douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 2January 21, 2022 6:06 AM

Jared quoting Shakespeare made it worthwhile.

Ackles's explanation is bollocks.

Padalecki had every right to be given a heads-up that Ackles and wife were considering this at the point where they'd just started to think about it, before anything was on paper or anyone was contacted. In other words, before there was anything TO jinx. Are they trying to pretend they didn't mention it to Eric Kripke (Supernatural's creator) at that point? Ackles and Padalecki had lived those roles together for nearly half their lives. What did he think, that Padalecki was going to go out and develop a competing version of the same show? They deliberately excluded him, and that's all there is to be said about it. If they had good reason for that decision, they evidently still haven't told him what it was.

Padalecki's public outbursts are usually out of line, but I can see why he did it here. Kind of, "Well if I'm so totally excluded from your life, I guess I can only get your attention in public."

I thought Ted C. Said they were fucking…back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 5January 23, 2022 1:59 AM

Jensen looks rough. He definitely had work done. That's all I have to say.

by Anonymousreply 6January 23, 2022 2:03 AM

The big appeal of Supernatural is this great Winchester brotherly bond. Followers of the show want a relationship as tight and as close as the one Sam and Dean had.

I'm too old to realize which one is the older brother (Jensen, I guess?) and so, I'm sure there was all sorts of brotherly protection in the stories (I think I maybe watched one episode all the way through.)

And now, of course, Jensen just goes off and makes this big deal without his 'brother.'

Did he think about the optics? Did he think at all?

by Anonymousreply 7January 23, 2022 2:05 AM

r7, he probably went to the SJP school of revamping a show without a critical fan favorite, Both were raked over the coals in public for their selfishness.

Jared Padalecki to Supernatural Fans' Podcast Pushback: "Stand Down"

What a difference a day makes in the world of the Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki-starring Supernatural. Yesterday, we reported that Richard Speight Jr. & Rob Benedict were teaming up with Story Mill Media for the new rewatch podcast series Supernatural Then and Now that's launching on January 24. Each episode includes the cast, crew, and producers offering their behind-the-scenes perspectives on how the episodes made it from the page to the screen, with Ackles and Padalecki appearing in the first two episodes to help kick things off. They even have writer & author Jessica Mason (The Binge Watcher's Guide to Supernatural: An Unofficial Companion) writing the show, so it seemed like a good thing… right? Well, it would appear that we were wrong- so much so that Padalecki had to take to Twitter to ask that his supporters to "stand down"- here's why.

Remember back to November 2020. The show was reaching its end and there was that controversy surrounding the Spanish version of the Supernatural episode "Despair" where Castiel's (Misha Collins) declaration of love to Dean (Ackles) was met with the response, "And I, you, Cas" as opposed to the U.S. version: "Don't do this, Cas". Accusations of corporate pressure along with arguments that the way the entire Castiel/Dean wrap-up was handled fed into the "bury your gays' trope began storming across social media, and the topic was addressed by those associated with the show, who love the show, and who cover the show. One of those people was Mason, who write a piece that month entitled "Fandom Conspiracy Theories Are Just as Dangerous as Others" (which you can read here) where they took issue with those in the SPN fandom, pushing back on what they called, "wild conspiracy theories."

R4 and R7 it's very obvious why Jensen didn't tell Jared about it.

by Anonymousreply 10January 23, 2022 2:22 PM

Why, R10?

by Anonymousreply 11January 24, 2022 4:22 AM

Yeah why?

because Jared has his own show?

Becuase he's depressed? Why?

by Anonymousreply 12January 24, 2022 4:45 AM

R11 and R12 did you not read the first reply?

by Anonymousreply 13January 24, 2022 10:18 AM

Unless these two are or were fucking, I don't care.

by Anonymousreply 14January 24, 2022 10:26 AM

R14 they weren't.

by Anonymousreply 15January 24, 2022 12:05 PM

They certainly lived together for a period of time in Kerrisdale, Vancouver. It wasn't when they first moved to Canada (in fact, Ackles had been filming there for years already), but a couple of years later, so there was no need for it. It doesn't necessarily mean they were fucking: they could've been running a frat house for all we know.

But it does show they were genuinely fond of each other, since they were also working 12-hour days together. Even when they moved their home bases from LA to Austin a decade later, they did it at almost the same time and the houses were jogging distance from each other.

A lot of their fans are crazycakes, but they do at least have plenty of evidence of affection between the pair -- which this most recent story suggests has taken a major dive.

I understand Jared being upset, but there's no excusing venting on Twitter. You're a 40 year old man, not a fucking tween. On behalf of service industry workers everywhere...stop it.

I'll give one plus to whiny baby Jared: he may scream at waitresses and flight attendants, but he gives his kids human names: Odette Elliott Padalecki, Thomas Colton Padalecki, Austin Shepherd Padalecki

Jensen's brood sounds like puppies or scifi characters: Justice Jay Ackles, Zeppelin Bram Ackles, Arrow Rhodes Ackles

Both are the epitome of basic straight white boys along with Chad Michael Murray and James Van Der Veek

If they’d just fuck it out, all would be good.

by Anonymousreply 20January 24, 2022 11:47 PM

Not these nobodies again. Neither of them are even hot anymore.

by Anonymousreply 21January 25, 2022 3:19 AM

R20 never going to happen.
