so someone posted at the end of the last thread about Medvedev getting booed by the Aussie crowd and him going off on them post-match lol
is there video?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 20, 2022 6:11 PM |
R3 He wasn't boo'd. They were doing that stupid Ronaldo "suuuiii!" thing that's managed to ruin this Aus Open.
He complained about not being able to hear what La Courier was saying to him and told them to have some respect.

You forgot Young Grigor's name!
Here's a video of Medvedev's interview with Jim Courier
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 20, 2022 6:17 PM |
Yeah they claim it's not booing, it just happens to be a noise that conveniently sounds exactly like booing. Hopefully, now Kyrgios is out and the seat prices in the later rounds there will be far fewer of these bogan louts as the tournament goes on.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 20, 2022 6:19 PM |
Jim Courier has been visiting his dermatologist for fillers. He looks great, but his cheekbones are just a little too puffy. Tom Cruise would approve.

Ugh. Rafa has a tough, tough third match later tonight.
May the tennis gods be in good favor tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 20, 2022 7:04 PM |
this is clealry booing, not suuuui . And even if they do suuuui , doing it between first and second serve is pathetic. It is distracting anyway. They were doing it a lot in murray match too
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 20, 2022 7:16 PM |
I’m Australian and I was cheering on Medvedev (from my couch) all the way.
Hopefully now that Kyrgios is out, his bogan fans, who appear to know nothing about tennis, will disappear.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 20, 2022 7:19 PM |
Thanks, R11.
R16 The crowd was surprisingly loud and boisterous despite the stands being less than 50% full (at least for the afternoon ESPN coverage.)
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 20, 2022 8:40 PM |
Attendance is capped at 50% because of you-know-what.
From my observation most of the noise came from Kyrgios’s supporters who were right behind the baseline so the noise got amplified by the court side mikes.

God - I hate that stupid SIUUU shit! It sounds just like boo. It sounds like everyone is doing it - I saw a guy with what looked like cerebral palsy and HE was fucking yelling SIUUUU.

Rublev let into Australia with Covid
Andrei Rublev has revealed he was allowed into Australia with Covid despite the ugly Novak Djokovic row.
Even though he was still positive for Covid upon his arrival Down Under, he was let in and is no longer being tested.
Speaking to Sport Klub, Rublev said: “I am not being tested personally now because I just got over the coronavirus.
“When I flew to Australia, I was still positive, but the level of Covid SS, as it is called, I will not lie, it was very low and not dangerous.
“I was allowed to enter the country. In addition, I spent more than ten days in quarantine.”

Daniel reacts
Taro Daniel opened up about his shock victory over British legend Andy Murray.
Daniel said: "It's amazing, winning a match like this in front of so many people. It's unbelievable, thank you.
"It was an amazing level from me. I got a bit nervous in the third set. I tried not to make too big a deal of this match, playing Andy Murray.
"Even if it was against me, I was trying to feel the energy [in the crowd]. I felt goosebumps, it was amazing"

DLers happy to see that if you search on twitter "espn tennis" you'll find hundreds of people ripping them to shreds about their horrific coverage of this year's AO. If they think this is the move going forward with all the slams they're going to be in big trouble
they really should give up live broadcast rights to the Tennis Channel

Ostapenko is finally playing Krejcikova the way I've been saying everyone needs to since RG. You've got to make Krejcikova run.. She is not a good athlete. What she does very well is control the center of the court. Hitting a ball up the middle is not a tactic against her but for some reason most of the girls have been doing that
Ostapenko is no genius but she's so aggressive so doesn't waste time going up the middle on a regular basis. She'll go for the corners when the first opportunity presents itself. Even if she loses this match, she's shown what one can do. Krejcikova is not some unbeatable players

With Woke-saka out, this is really Barty's to win.
Ostaporko had to go for winners because there was no way her lard ass was going to last in long rallies.
I guess the expectations on Opelka to win really got to him.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 21, 2022 1:00 PM |
In live rankings, Osaka is down to 84. Even worse for her, the French Open and Wimbledon are the next slams. She doesn't like those surfaces and will probably meet good players early.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 21, 2022 1:07 PM |
I really hope Nadal does not win. Djokovic is such an idiot to jeopardize his Slam count for his stupid vaccination stance. Nole deserves what he gets. And it's pathetic that these young guys like Khachsnov still can't take down healthy Big 3 opponents.
When I was watching the AO the other day, one of the commentators said the surface this year causes topspin to kick up high and slice to stay low. She was saying it was a big advantage for Barty given the way she plays. I say that's advantage Nadal as well.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 21, 2022 1:20 PM |

Australian Open fans stunned as Eurosport cuts away from Osaka’s match-deciding final set at 5-5 to show skiing5
TENNIS fans were left fuming after Eurosport's coverage of the Australian Open cut out.
With Naomi Osaka tied at 5-5 in her third set against Amanda Anisimova, viewers were gripped by the nail-biting action.
But then suddenly, the camera cut to the locker room at the Skiing World Cup, currently held in Austria.
Fans on Twitter were not happy, to say the least, and hit out at Eurosport for their questionable coverage.
One said: "At 5-5 in the deciding set of a brilliant match between Osaka and Anisimova, Eurosport cut away to... the locker room at the Skiing World Cup."
Another added: "Not Eurosport leaving Osaka’s match at 5-5 in the 3rd. Shambles."
One tweeted: "Eurosport 2 cutting away from the Naomi Osaka match at 5-5 in the third set to go to skiing (and moving Osaka onto its subscription only streaming service) is an… interesting decision…"
Defending champion Osaka, 24, was eventually beaten by American Anisimova, 20, whether Eurosport viewers were able to watch it or not.
Another posted: "Can you believe it -Eurosport stopped coverage of Anisimova /Osaka at 5-6 third set - appalling decision."
Anisimova said: "I'm speechless. I can't stop smiling. I'm just laughing. I absolutely love this.
"Going into this match I knew I had to be playing sharp if I wanted to give myself a chance.
"She is an absolute champion so I knew I would have to step up my game and be aggressive.
"I'm honestly so grateful that I was able to play so well today and get this win. It means a lot.
"Every single day here is an amazing opportunity. I'm just thinking about having fun and I'm looking forward to my next round."

Osaka's superstition---"For me, it's definitely the lines and the logo(doesn't step on them), but also, I need my water bottles to be completely straight," Osaka said. "I'm not sure why that is."

I would not want to be Danielle Collins’ boyfriend or coach after she just lost those 5 straight games.
Hopefully Tauson spends $5000 of her winnings on a chin implant.

by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 22, 2022 12:00 AM |
Jill Craybas!

I don't often get to read/comment until much later because I tend to watch on tape delay and it takes forever to catch up. But I couldn't believe that no one commented on Berretini thanking Immodium on the camera signing glass? Can you imagine how stressful it must be playing with the trots?

To clarify if I was doing a drinking game. Hoping Halep gets through to the semis from that section. She is by far the best player in that quarter of the draw.

Some gems: "zverev- business; is on academic probation but his dad paid his fraternity to not kick him out. goes around asking "where's my hug at". certified creep and no one in his fraternity likes him. is paying child support through his tuition reimbursements. Menace to society"
"shapo-geology; felix's best friend, is doing geology but uses quizlet because he actually doesn't care about geology. says he wants to open a jewerly store but in reality wants to do music. works part time at mcdonalds and puts his mixtapes in the kids meals"

Anyone watching Channel 9 news coverage?
I'm trying to figure out who the American (Canadian?) commentator is who has a purse falling out of his mouth anytime he speaks. Is it Jim Courier? When he's on the court interviewing players, he sounds nothing like the guy I'm listening to comment on the games. Does he butch it up on court? Is it someone else I'm hearing? I've done some googling and can't figure it out.
Also, Krejcikova is the only Czech player to make it to the fourth round! :(

Good to see Cilic playing so well and holding it together to take down Rublev. If he and Monfils can hold this kind of form (big if) I could see at least one of them going through to the semis.

Daniil's on-court interview was charming. He said, in regard to the Australian crowd, "Every good relationship has its ups and downs." Perfect. He also has a very easy smile which is unusual with the top players.

by Anonymous | reply 169 | January 22, 2022 3:21 PM |
Commentators were saying that Danielle Collins is known to be aggressive on court, but I am surprised that every other woman player doesn’t complain about how loud and disruptive and downright rude she is. Tauson seemed shell shocked at the handshake. At that point Collins was literally screaming “come on” after every single point.
She’s well past the line of bad sportsmanship.

by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 22, 2022 7:35 PM |
Vika has always driven me nuts. The sound of her screeching makes her matches tough to watch but she also has a very annoying personality. It's like a nerd trying to be cool. And the whole wearing of the sunglasses she has adopted at this tournament just compounds her try hard disposition
by Anonymous | reply 180 | January 22, 2022 7:41 PM |

She’s beastly on the court owing to her absolutely jacked physique, but I bet that when she’s in a cute little dress with some makeup and her hair blown out, she’s gotta be an absolute smoke show. Great bone structure and well proportioned.

What’s the deal with Nadal and his little OCD tics and rituals? He has 2 water bottles perfectly lined up on the ground, takes a sip from each one before placing them back exactly in position. And the towel he uses to mop his face then carefully places it back over the chair, all lined up and perfectly straight. Is the guy OCD or what?
And those rituals he goes through with his hands before serving the ball. And digging his shorts out of his ass, he’s done that one multiple times. So freaky.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | January 23, 2022 3:47 AM |

Boy, I picked Zverev to win the whole thing. I'm stunned at this Shapo result so far. Shapo is great--I love him as a player--but he can get so wild and inconsistent. Zverev looks flat.

R244, of course Rafa has more talent. He's either the first, second, or third (depending on who you ask) male tennis player of all time.
But Shapo won't be an easy match. When he's on? He's as dangerous as anyone. He's just massively inconsistent.
(I'm also a Rafa fan and very, very superstitious with him. I downplay every match.)

mannarino and nadal match you could see through nadal's shorts because of the sweat and light. I paused it and looked. he has a nice bump in his shorts. I think he tucks down there but it was nice to see he has something. for years i thought he had nothing but it's nice to see he's at least average size .

Between Tilley's screwups and the poor AO scheduling, Tennis Australia is a bad joke. Why did they schedule three of the men's quarterfinals at the same time during the day session when they could have staggered them throughout the day or night session times?

Instead of retiring from Tennis, maybe Nick K should just become a double specialist. He seems to really have a lot of fun, and does pretty well.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | January 24, 2022 1:16 AM |
it seems Aussie male tennis pros are either:
A) super hard workers and professional like Rafter and Hewitt
or
B) talented but lazy and have mental issues like Cash, Philippoussis and Kyrgios
by Anonymous | reply 289 | January 24, 2022 1:23 AM |
God, but I loathe Collins. Everything about her is just so trailer park trashy. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that she went to UVA.

by Anonymous | reply 292 | January 24, 2022 2:03 AM |
R289 I’d leave Hewitt out of the “super hard workers and professional” category. In my view he was the first of the fucking Aussie dickheads who opened the floodgates for Philippoussis, Kyrgios etc.
Someone upthread talked about Kyrgios focusing on doubles - I wish that he’d retire to some island to enjoy his millions and his influencer girlfriends and just disappear.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | January 24, 2022 2:04 AM |
Look at our journeywomen Pegula and Collins getting into the final 8. Keys, too.

Philippousis was on tour before Hewitt.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | January 24, 2022 2:14 AM |
R293 oh Hewitt was an asshole and a racist no doubt but he was professional in the sense that he was very fit and always gave his all in a match. His personality was terrible
by Anonymous | reply 296 | January 24, 2022 2:16 AM |
I never liked that James Blake let him off the hook for his blatantly racist remark about the black linesman.

by Anonymous | reply 298 | January 24, 2022 2:22 AM |
Blake is a pacifist and nice guy. He always takes the high road. Spadea is the only player I've ever seen/heard badmouth him
by Anonymous | reply 299 | January 24, 2022 2:22 AM |
Cornet is going to make Halep be the aggressive one. Sometimes Halep hates that. When she's in form and confident she can be aggressive though
by Anonymous | reply 300 | January 24, 2022 2:23 AM |
Blake always took the high road even when Hewitt deserved a swift hard tennis ball in the nuts.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | January 24, 2022 2:24 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 351 | January 24, 2022 2:05 PM |
I think womens tennis is interesting in that no one is seemingly intimidated by anyone else. In her heyday, Serena used to scare her opponents right off the court before the match even started. Now, anyone can beat anyone and even the lessers like Raducanu and Kenin can win Grand Slams if they get a favorable draw.

by Anonymous | reply 360 | January 24, 2022 6:27 PM |
the top half of the women's draw is quite decent. 2 slam winners and a slam finalist. It would only be random if Pegula reached the final
the bottom half did fall apart and it will be interesting to see if slam winner Swiatek can get to another final. Collins, Cornet and Kanepi would all be random despite their ability to sometimes upset the top players
I had a feeling Sabalenka would be in for a rough night if she didn't serve well and I see she ended up with 15 double faults. Kanepi is 1 of the most aggressive players on tour and in good form, she can be tough to beat.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | January 24, 2022 6:42 PM |
Tiley really hasn't been reading things well lately has he? He's coming across like he's a slave to the corporate lords. WTA and ATP are united over not caring what China does so Tiley must be worried about Chinese sponsors - isn't there a prominent Chinese liquor being advertised at the AO?
by Anonymous | reply 362 | January 24, 2022 6:59 PM |
I'm an elder gay who's watched the progression of women's tennis since the era of BJK/Evert/Court/King. After the King/Riggs match, and for several years, one could fill in the final 8 at a major tournament almost flawlessly. Upsets of the top 4 before the semis was very rare. The criticism then was there was no depth. Go back and look at most of the scores during the opening rounds, and there were often very lopsided scores. That was the norm.
Overall, with some notable exceptions, the women players today are much more physically fit. Yes, it's true they often capitulated to Serena, but Serena was a very strong athlete, particularly with the serve. So, I guess this is progress. The men's big three or four has been a constant thing until maybe lately, and still with extenuating circumstances. Nadal might still even win the AO.
Personally, I'd like to see SOME consistency at the top most of the time, but I think it's excellent to see a rank and file player break through in a big tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | January 24, 2022 7:51 PM |
For the last 8 years I've been hoping for more inconsistency from the men and more consistency from the women
in the early 00s WTA critics were whining that Serena and Venus always won with Henin, Clijsters, Capriati and Davenport the next tier and everyone else a walking bye. During that period was the ATP's most inconsistent period and the game was called "exciting because you never knew who would win". Now the roles have reversed and the women are still getting bashed while the men still praised

I've had ESPN+ since last summer and they mostly show doubles, kids, and wheelchair matches. This streaming service sucks, IMO.
Why are they showing the high profile singles matches this year?
Is this going to be a permanent thing, or just because of Novaxx and wanting higher streaming ratings?

Krejcikova calling for the trainer when she is losing. I'm shocked I tell ya. Shocked! I wonder when will she take her super long bathroom break.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | January 25, 2022 1:25 AM |
Is she being unprofessional again?
by Anonymous | reply 408 | January 25, 2022 1:25 AM |
Will Kyrgios man handle Kokkinakis's ass again today or will he cup and pull his sack instead.?
Yummy!
by Anonymous | reply 409 | January 25, 2022 1:33 AM |
Krejcikova is is mainly struggling against the power of Keys. Unlike Ostapenko who has big groundies, Keys has a serve. Of course Keys also has the biggest forehand on tour
by Anonymous | reply 410 | January 25, 2022 2:00 AM |
I wonder how Keys has felt the last few years seeing the rise of Osaka. Osaka plays like Keys except a tad less power but more consistent. Maybe it's motivated her hot start this year. There is no reason why Keys can't dominate on fast hardcourts and grass if she cuts back on errors
by Anonymous | reply 411 | January 25, 2022 2:05 AM |
Keys in the semis! Good for her.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | January 25, 2022 2:09 AM |
yay Maddie!
6-3 6-2 crushing
by Anonymous | reply 413 | January 25, 2022 2:09 AM |
This is the most in control I have seen with Keys. She still will go for a huge shot, which she mostly makes, but her average shot has more shape and control.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | January 25, 2022 2:15 AM |
I'm so glad Krejcikova lost.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | January 25, 2022 2:19 AM |
it'll be interesting to see if Nadal can get Shapovalov to litter the court with errors
there were some messy patches in the Shapovalov-Zverev match the other day
by Anonymous | reply 416 | January 25, 2022 2:22 AM |
Keys hasn't been in a Slam semi since 2018. She's practically giddy. I like her.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | January 25, 2022 2:24 AM |
Swiatek hasn't been past the 4th round at the AO, but she's the most likely to make it to the final in the bottom half of the draw.
Wish the final could be Barty v Keys.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | January 25, 2022 2:26 AM |
Is it also 3 min max bathroom break for the women?
by Anonymous | reply 419 | January 25, 2022 2:29 AM |
[quote] Shapo could model. I don't know why some fashion brand hasn't put him in a campaign yet.
I find Shapo good looking but his many facial moles detract from his model potential. They are not distinctive or striking like Cindy Crawford single mole.
I want Shapo to win tonight because I want a new Australian Open champion, but I normally wouldn't root for him given that, as R384 mentioned, he "has the intelligence of fur-covered foam" and is also an ignorant Putin supporter.
by Anonymous | reply 420 | January 25, 2022 2:32 AM |
yes, he's a dumb dumb. There is nothing upstairs.
He couldn't even spell Canada....

by Anonymous | reply 423 | January 25, 2022 2:51 AM |
Set one goes to Rafa. The service games seemed to move very fast, with both players holding well.
by Anonymous | reply 424 | January 25, 2022 3:13 AM |
Denis just insulted the umpires.
by Anonymous | reply 425 | January 25, 2022 3:15 AM |

[quote] Denis just insulted the umpires.
What was that about? I couldn't make it out.
by Anonymous | reply 427 | January 25, 2022 3:18 AM |
he was upset that Nadal was taking too much time and complained that the umpire doesn't enforce the time rules. 'You guys are all corrupt.' He has a point about the rules but that line was cringe.
by Anonymous | reply 428 | January 25, 2022 3:20 AM |
Thank you, R428.

Shapo trying to follow in the footsteps of a certain missing player...
by Anonymous | reply 430 | January 25, 2022 3:22 AM |
Then later he was staring down the umpire and the umpire said what do you want me to do, he has 8 seconds left. Then Rafa and him went to the net and Rafa said something to him. We don't know but the commentators think he said, he knows what he's trying to do and cut it out.
Shapo looks like a jerk trying to get into Rafa's head and take him off his pace.
Rafa is going to try and take every second he gets.
by Anonymous | reply 431 | January 25, 2022 3:23 AM |
For a hot minute I thought that they were going to get into an actual brawl when they walked towards each other to the net!

by Anonymous | reply 433 | January 25, 2022 3:25 AM |
Nadal does annoyingly take forever between points. Won't miss that when he retires.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | January 25, 2022 3:27 AM |
I watched the women's matches last night and they were not calling time at all. They were giving them plenty of extra time due to the heat and no one was complaining.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | January 25, 2022 3:29 AM |
R432 Nadal would never blow a chance at a slam or any tournament to fight with someone and ruin his reputation
I find Nadal's OCD annoying but he's not going to act trashy
Shapovalov is a brat. Remember when he first came on tour he took a tantrum and hit a ball that accidentally nailed an umpire's eye. The guy needed surgery
by Anonymous | reply 436 | January 25, 2022 3:29 AM |
I can't stand Shapo but in his defense, that ball he struck that injured the umpire was in celebration of a win.
by Anonymous | reply 437 | January 25, 2022 3:34 AM |
This balding OCD freak is getting on my nerves.
by Anonymous | reply 438 | January 25, 2022 3:47 AM |

Shapo has a nice body but his mug is fug!
by Anonymous | reply 440 | January 25, 2022 3:51 AM |
really dumb game by Shapovalov to get broken. Just like in the first set
Just like Mannarino, he had Nadal at net in a weak position and hit the ball to him! What the fuck is wrong with these guys? Stop trying to get cute and wrongfooting Nadal.
Any player who's at 1 side of the net HIT TO THE OTHER OPEN SIDE OF THE NET
I can't believe the level of stupidity of Nadal's opponents 2 matches in a row
by Anonymous | reply 441 | January 25, 2022 3:52 AM |
Shapo going to implode soon. He is yelling to his coach I guess about his dumb shot selection
by Anonymous | reply 442 | January 25, 2022 3:52 AM |
Just keep losing it, Shap. Rafa will keep his cool and wait for his opportunity.
Interestingly, I read an interview in which Shap said he knew he had to play it cool in order to beat Rafa. Seems like he's not sticking to the game plan.
by Anonymous | reply 443 | January 25, 2022 3:53 AM |
Shapo doesn't have enough synapses firing to stick to a game plan.
by Anonymous | reply 444 | January 25, 2022 3:56 AM |

Well, this is what they say about him. Playing his best, no one can beat him. But he's consistently inconsistent.

by Anonymous | reply 447 | January 25, 2022 4:03 AM |
really if you took Shapovalov's physical attributes of speed, power and stamina but gave him a tactician's brain transplant, he'd be top 3 for sure
by Anonymous | reply 448 | January 25, 2022 4:08 AM |
But he's stupid. nobody's home upstairs.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | January 25, 2022 4:09 AM |
Well Rafa has the first two sets. It's uphill battle for Shapo, but I'm happy he took out Zverev.

Rafa takes the second set 6-4
by Anonymous | reply 451 | January 25, 2022 4:11 AM |
What few seem to realize about Rafa is that he has a very tactical mind. He's always planning his shots.
I bet even he didn't imagine how easy this was going to be. I thought Shap would get at least one set.

Shap is passionate. He's not nasty. He was gracious to Rafa and the ref at the end.
He is someone to watch.
I'm not sure if he's smart, but he FIGHTS. His AO and US Open matches were some of the best, most well-played tennis matches I've seen in recent years.
by Anonymous | reply 506 | January 25, 2022 6:44 AM |
I'd love to see Rafa win the damn thing just to watch the NoleFams heads explode.
by Anonymous | reply 507 | January 25, 2022 6:46 AM |
This is a great opportunity for Rafa but I still can't see him getting past Medvedev. It's an age thing, he's just slower now on top of that the AO is his weakest slam.

by Anonymous | reply 515 | January 25, 2022 7:22 AM |
Proud of my Rafa. Reaching another semifinal is huge. He will probably lose, but still... just reaching the semi is better than I expected before the open. Semifinals are valuable when talking about GOAT qualifications.
by Anonymous | reply 516 | January 25, 2022 8:08 AM |
This tournament has illustrated how boring mens tennis is going to be once the big 3 sign off. Is anyone going to care about Medvedev/Zverev finals? It's going to be a bleak few years for the sport unless they can find some players who will provide box office entertainment. The womens side is also lacking great players who will draw crowds.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | January 25, 2022 8:51 AM |
We need Psycho Forehead Canuck to spice up the WTA by going Tonya Harding on a victorious opponent or trying to poison her or claw her eyes out. Compelling.
by Anonymous | reply 518 | January 25, 2022 8:58 AM |
Not bleak at all, R517. Many of us have been waiting for years for Djokovic to go away. Federer hasn't been a real factor for at least two years and Rafa's been intermittent. Alcaraz and Felix are stepping up, and Medvedev is growing on a lot of us. Bleak was having to suffer and cringe through Novaxx's megalomania and Jekyll/Hyde tactics these too many years.
by Anonymous | reply 519 | January 25, 2022 9:15 AM |
Did Rafa really have a medical time out? Is he injured? Or did he just use it to buy some time when Shapo was in the lead?
by Anonymous | reply 520 | January 25, 2022 9:31 AM |
Krejcikova seems like a nice girl. But boy, does she need a makeover. She’s frumpy… like the first half of a movie in which Streisand’s character hasn’t realized her beauty.
Her DL gays could give her a hand. Better yet, let’s send in the drag queens from Here We Come to unleash the temptress inside her.
by Anonymous | reply 521 | January 25, 2022 10:51 AM |
RAFAAAAAA!
But why did it go to 5 sets?
Still, Rafa is patient. He also has stamina, But now he'll be tired for the semi final.
I believe he will get to the final.
by Anonymous | reply 522 | January 25, 2022 10:53 AM |
Bye Shapo. Come sit on my face if that'll help.
by Anonymous | reply 523 | January 25, 2022 11:05 AM |
I wonder if there's any justification for Shap's accusation that Rafa is always given a pass for things like taking too long to serve?
Because, let's face it, he does take forever. And a six minute toilet break?
I believe that perhaps he does get a pass. Because he's a champion but also because he's so darn nice.
He very rarely has lost it in the 20 years of his career. He's humble and always compliments the other players. Surely this endears him to the umpires, too. He's one wily player, using every advantage.
by Anonymous | reply 524 | January 25, 2022 11:11 AM |
Agree, R524. I think he's won the ATP Sportsmanship award like 6 times or something like that. The other players clearly respect him. And he's an unbelievable fighter. Still wants it insanely after all these years.
Poor JPeg must think she was run over by a Melbourne trolley.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | January 25, 2022 11:15 AM |
I know Rafa has OCD, but it's fun to watch him act like a little princess when he has to wipe his face and then lay the towel down just perfectly; and make sure that his 2 water bottles (one is chilled, the other room temp) have to stand side-by-side perfectly with the label facing the side of the court he is playing on; and tugging at his ass (and all those face touchings) before every serve. Love that he is wearing white short even though he's sweating right through them and we can see his panty lines. You go, Rafa!!
by Anonymous | reply 526 | January 25, 2022 11:20 AM |
Rafa is an artist who has to have things "just so."
I don't even think he's that OCD. OCD people are compulsive. Rafa is just very methodical.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | January 25, 2022 11:25 AM |
R526 I think Rafa knows he has a lot of gay fans. Rafa was a gay fave since the beginning, when he played in sleeveless shirts.
by Anonymous | reply 529 | January 25, 2022 11:53 AM |
I can't believe I found it. I still remember this, even though 10 years have passed. Gays love Rafa.
by Anonymous | reply 530 | January 25, 2022 11:56 AM |
Rafa may win this thing. Medvedev is the favorite, to be sure, but he's had a couple of four-set matches in the AO so far.
He's not as dominant as Djokovic.
by Anonymous | reply 531 | January 25, 2022 12:05 PM |
La Monf / Berrettini turning into a bit of a thriller. Going into a 5th set with all the momentum with Gael.
by Anonymous | reply 532 | January 25, 2022 12:11 PM |
Rafa seems like a good-hearted, simple, uncomplicated person, which is kind of strange for an elite athlete. I used to wonder if he used PEDs, but as time goes by, he seems to be aging naturally (turning into a skinny old guy) and struggling with injuries and recovery times in a way that seems natural too.
by Anonymous | reply 533 | January 25, 2022 12:18 PM |
Putain de merde, why did I open my mouth? The wheels coming off La Monf in the final set quite spectacularly.

Netflix will have a series about the AO. Greek Asshole and American Fitz is in it!
"Around eight men and eight women are targeted for filming that has started in Melbourne as the sport tries to emulate the success of F1’s Drive To Survive.
Five of them progressed to the fourth round of the season’s first Grand Slam, which has already provided producers with plenty of material. ‘I’m very privileged to be in it,’ Tsitsipas said of the series, by London’s Box To Box Productions.
Others to win were Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, Australian Alex de Minaur and women’s second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus."

Shapo doesn't nothing for me. Bland as fuck
by Anonymous | reply 539 | January 25, 2022 3:17 PM |
Typical of the young guns. Shapo had all the momentum then starts off the 5th, when Rafa is clearly struggling, with a pathetic 3-error service game to hand it over. Shapo is 13 years younger than Nadal but can't outlast him? Pathetic. I hope Berretini brings it in the semis.
I'll be curious to see who wins the Sinner-Tsitsipas match. Sinner and Alcaraz are getting. better and better. There is a lot of young talent on the tour now, but they still seem to struggle with the Big 3. I hope younger players sweep the Slams this year.
by Anonymous | reply 540 | January 25, 2022 3:23 PM |
Rafa seems completely asexual. I just can't imagine him being interested in it with anyone.

Which Big 3, R540?
by Anonymous | reply 542 | January 25, 2022 4:03 PM |
R542, I wouldn’t celebrate Djokovic’s demise so soon.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | January 25, 2022 4:07 PM |
I agree, R543. Djokovic is far from over. But he is an absolute idiot for refusing to get vaccinated. He would have had a great shot at winning the AO this year and reaching #21. Instead, only Nadal has that chance.
I wonder if Wimbledon will implement a similar rule like the French Open has. If so and Djokovic continues to double-down on his stupidity, he may not get to play three of four Slams this year. I doubt the US Open will implement a rule like that, but you never know.

you have to be vaccinated to play in NY. Just look at Kyrie Irving...he can't play in NY coz he is not vaxxed, can only play road games
by Anonymous | reply 546 | January 25, 2022 4:48 PM |
so what was wrong with Rafa? His tummy ok? something he ate?
by Anonymous | reply 547 | January 25, 2022 4:48 PM |
Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but regardless of the vaccine disaster, the cracks are starting to show with Djokovic having lost his Golden and Grand Slam opportunities last year. In upcoming Slams he'll be closer to 40 than 30. He couldn't have chosen a worse time to be hoisted with his own petard. I wasn't claiming Djokovic's demise, just Djokovic's debacle.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | January 25, 2022 4:51 PM |
R547 nothing was wrong with him , he just lost 2 sets, so he had to give excuses because he cannot say that he played worse. The pattern of big3- they have big ego.

For sure Djokovic is on the downside of his career, but he still has the goods to win Slams. He won three of them last year. There is no shame in him losing at the Olympics where it was best 2 out of 3 and losing at the US Open where the moment got to him and he just couldn't muster his best tennis when he needed it. Serena suffered a similar fate when she was staring at the calendar year Slam a few years ago.
For the Big 3, Roger has succumbed to injuries. Nadal, who always struggles with injuries, is getting worse yet here he is in a Slam semi. Djokovic will likely start to go down that road at some point, although he is naturally very flexible and may not struggle as much as Roger and Nadal. But also there is a critical mass of young players who are coming into their own who can stop Djokovic. Sinner and Alcaraz like I mentioned above are two to watch out for. They both have that belief that they belong, something the previous younger generation never had. Medvedev now knows he can win Slams. Zverev and Tsitsipas have the goods, but I'm not sure about their mentality. Berretini and Auger-Alliasime are now consistently getting to the later rounds of Slams.
If Djokovic doubles down on his vaccination stance, he may just piss history away. These young guys are happy to have him absent.

R544, it’s not actually clear that Djokovic would be barred from Roland Garros. As for the U.S. Open, it almost seems possible that the Supreme Court will strike down all vaccine mandates under any circumstances by then.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | January 25, 2022 5:23 PM |
damn I wish Berrettini had won in straight sets. He's had a few long matches at this tournament and we know he's injury-prone. At least he has a day and a half to rest
by Anonymous | reply 554 | January 25, 2022 5:59 PM |
Berrettini is so fucking handsome.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | January 25, 2022 6:07 PM |
Nothing against Rafa, except that he cheats with the help of the officials.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | January 25, 2022 6:17 PM |
it is true that some umpires give Nadal special treatment
that said, Shapovalov has no one to blame but himself. He had chances in both of Nadal's first 2 service games in the 5th set but he blew it. Then on his own first service game he played like a moron so he went down 0-3 and never recovered from there.

[Quote] umpires give Nadal special treatment
How would that benefit an umpire? Wouldn't that look bad on them?
by Anonymous | reply 558 | January 25, 2022 6:25 PM |
"I do stand by my side." There's no way this guy has a triple-digit IQ. ESPN showed a comparison between Shapo and Nadal of average time to serve. It was a difference of two seconds.

Novaxx won’t be allowed to enter the U.S.
[quote] You must be fully vaccinated to travel to the United States by plane if you are a non-U.S. citizen, non-U.S. immigrant (not a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident, or traveling to the United States on an immigrant visa). Only limited exceptions apply.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | January 25, 2022 6:41 PM |
I think the exemptions are not as strict as Australia...he might get his friends in his govt to produce whatever paperwork needed.
by Anonymous | reply 561 | January 25, 2022 6:43 PM |
His best hope is that restrictions will have been lifted by the time RG and the USO come around.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | January 25, 2022 6:44 PM |
We saw how well that went for him last time.
by Anonymous | reply 563 | January 25, 2022 6:45 PM |
Rafa has a history with Bernardes, IIRC Rafa said "you'll never call another match with me" or something like that. Bernardes is afraid to confront Rafa.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | January 25, 2022 6:49 PM |
Shap doesn't have the mental game of Rafa if he can't handle a few extra seconds of time.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | January 25, 2022 6:53 PM |
Bernades and Nadal are friends again now.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | January 25, 2022 7:10 PM |
They're not supposed to be friends. But it is not Rafi's fault if the umpire doesn't call out the time violations.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | January 25, 2022 7:36 PM |
I just hope Berrettini is ready to go. He'll need to consistently pound in first serves and forehands to beat the baldy
by Anonymous | reply 568 | January 25, 2022 7:39 PM |
Agassi used to bitch when Sampras would take the full time to serve. Sampras would drag his feet just to piss him off, while Agassi would visibly spazz out on the other side of the net. This is a tale as old as time.

OMG 😳
Rafa barely escaped!!! 😳😳😳😳
I went to bed and he was up 2 sets . Mom yells thru my door and says he lost the third set.
Didn’t even know he won till just now, when I ventured into this thread and the ESPN web site.
😲😧

The men's matches tonight should be interesting. I've tried to watch some of the women's matches, but most have been deadly boring.

I would normally be on FAA team, but I want a new champ so that means beating Nadal. So I’m Medvedev team for this match.
