He has a huge future ahead of him. He seems to have the knack to wend his way through all the minefields. Loved how he put down Ted Cruzat a hearing. And he’s handsome, too. Love the greying temples. Wonder if he’ll remain in the Senate as long as he can, or run for governor if Abrams doesn’t win, or moves on. He’s just starting a family, so difficult to commute to DC with little ones. He does get a little theatrical, but he’s getting a lot done, and delivering.
How’s it going Pelosi — want to weigh in?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 20, 2022 6:40 AM |
I was listening to the clip above and heard him mention opening voter registration before a runoff election. Surely there aren't people who want to allow that. A runoff should be decided by voters who participated in the first vote.

I would like to see him run in 2024. I like Biden but he's going to be too old. When 2024 comes around, they will be looking at Biden's VP and unfortunately, this country is too misogynistic and racist for Harris. Ossoff has youth, good looks, charisma and integrity. He's Jewish but he's still a white male. We have to think ahead to win. I suspect the GOP candidate will be DeSantis, a mini-Trump but smarter and a little more evil.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 20, 2022 11:39 PM |
AS much as I love Joe Biden I would like to see him retire to make way for Ossoff who would be the perfect candidate. And I think he should choose Val Demings as his VP.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 21, 2022 2:59 AM |
Ossoff doesn’t mind stepping on mines. He took a risk in calling Perdue a crook. He took on Nancy and crew on profiting from their positions. He slapped down Cruz when Cruz went after him. He’s taking on Collins. We’ll see how big of a threat the Republicans think he is if you start seeing attacks on him. They’ll be behind it, and will try to stop his momentum. But other aspirational Dems could be behind it as well. If you look at what he’s done in just his one year in office, it is more than most have done in 20+ years.

Jewish and black people have been at odds with each to some degree since the 1980’s but I can tell you the black folk in Georgia love Ossoff. Further black women love him, well women in general do. Pulling in women, black people and Jewish people is a good platform to begin with.

To r44:
[Quote]Many American Jews romanticize what “we” did for “them” during the civil rights era. These Jews resent what they see as a lack of African American support for Jewish causes, including Israel. I have heard such sentiments expressed in my own congregation, as has pretty much every rabbi I know.
[Quote]As Jackie Levine, a protege of Rabbi Prinz and a civil rights leader, now 94, said of her fellow congregants of that time: “If we as a group were more inclined to support King than others were, it was only because we had his friend Prinz as our teacher. But even in our own congregation, many were suspicious of King’s motives. They distrusted him and blacks in general. That was the sad truth.”
[Quote]This truth is too often ignored or dismissed. In a 2018 Commentary essay, “The Rise of Black Anti-Semitism,” Jamie Kirchick seems to identify the promotion of African American interests as an official mission of the Jewish people. “Almost from the beginning of their mass settlement in the United States,” he wrote, “Jews played an important role in advancing the civil rights of, and furthering opportunities for, African Americans, whose fate Jews considered intertwined with their own as fellow minorities in a WASP-dominated country.” Such an image is falsely nostalgic, self-serving and misleading.

Southern Democrats fare very well running for the Presidency: LBJ, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton. He definitely will be in the running in 2028. I doubt he'd challenge Kamala, etc. in 2024. And anybody who thinks Stacey Abrams will ever be President is seriously deluded.

About the "lack of experience", R67, somebody could argue the same about Pete, who'd only been mayor of a "small town" (and who actually did run for president...).
In any case, I believe Abrams would jump at the opportunity to be on the ticket as VP if they offered it to her.

he he and Pete Buttigieg are nearly the same age. They have almost identical politics and are both on the national stage. They both had children at the same time. The narrative online (and here) is that Pete Buttigieg is a craven establishment politician who is having children to further his career and the Job Ossoff is the real deal. But I'm sure it's not homophobia. It couldn't be, not here.

R89 — I think the voters will take to Dr Kramer, who is an articulate and educated person, and who prefers to stay behind the scenes, over Chasten. Ossoff, like Pete, can be theatrical, that’s his one downfall — along with the fact people say he tries to mimic Obama in his manner of speech. I’m still a big fan. He’s getting things done, and delivering for Georgia.

R89. Their politics are not the same... as evidenced by Ossoff's ability to mobilize his base.
They are both on the national stage, but all politics is local. The people of GEORGIA support Ossoff and put him on that stage. Buttigieg put himself on that stage. Black people like and vote for Ossoff! White people vote for Ossoff. The gays love Ossoff. Women love Ossoff. Jews love Ossoff. He won in Ruby Red Georgia - the jewel of the south!
People in Indiana wanted to support Buttigieg and did so initially). Buttigieg burned those bridges by failing to deliver (which he himself admitted) and by chasing Trump voters and not mobilizing his own base (remember that?). Stop trying to gaslight. It has nothing to do with him being gay.
Ossoff didn't try to hop in politics after the military. Ossoff went to school with the intention of going into politics. He has been in politics for many years and was guided by John Lewis. He interned with him while in school.
Other people saw Ossoff as someone good for politics, unlike Buttigieg who sees HIMSELF as someone to be injected into politics.
As others have said, Buttigieg just seems very craven and calculated.
We love Jon Ossoff. His road to politics is more genuine. We'll see how well he delivers. He has been on the right side of everything so far.
They are not the same.

by Anonymous | reply 102 | January 24, 2022 3:27 PM |
Ossoff won statewide office, the US Senate in a red state. Buttigieg ran for Treasurer, a statewide office, in Indiana and lost by 25 pts. Obama carried Indiana in 2008. Unless Buttigieg can win an office bigger than small town mayor, there's no way he can be elected President. Which former Presidents went straight from the second-tier job of Secy of Transportation to the Presidency? None. Pete should have used his newfound fame and the fawning support he got from cable news to run statewide in Indiana in 2020 or at least for Congress. He'll wind up as a 'pundit' on MSNBC.
The fact that Ossoff is a Southern Jew is important. New York Jews have a bad reputation for being arrogant assholes. Jews in the South have to fit in with the locals which softens some of the hard edges which annoy people about NY Jews.
Ossoff attacking members of Congress who use their jobs and knowledge to make themselves richer (we see you Nancy Pelosi) is excellent. Buttigieg is the Corporate Democrat par excellence: sucking up to rich donors. Ossoff goes the opposite route. Buttigieg is basically a Log Cabin Republican.

by Anonymous | reply 106 | January 24, 2022 6:36 PM |
The issue with the Democratic Party is that the media only concentrates on The Squad types. They only represent isolated, ultra-blue Congressional districts. And Bernie Sanders represents a state which has 2 Senators but whose population only justifies one Congressman.
Look at Nancy Pelosi's chosen capos (capi?) in the House. With the exception of a few token 80 year old Southern blacks (my Gawd, Bennie Thompson...yikes) , all the ones wielding power in the House are from NY/Northeast or California. It's like she's unaware there's a whole country in between. Pelosi has blocked for years up-and-coming Dems from gaining influence in the House which is why there was a revolt against her a few years ago. Pelosi and all her 80 year old henchmen must go. At least the GOP allows newer members to gain influence. Pelosi ends up destroying younger Dems - the moderate ones, too.

by Anonymous | reply 111 | January 25, 2022 3:25 AM |
I like Ossoff but a lot would need to happen for him to run for POTUS in 2024. I don't think it's in the cards. The politics for him on this would be tricky. Joe has shown no sign of giving up the reins. I don't see the Twink of The Senate, being a good Southern gentleman (Who needs Women and Black voters) trying to knock off the old guy or stepping in front of the Black woman. That would be a Buttigieg move. Remember, Ossoff was "raised" in politics by John Lewis. He's no dummy. He understands the landscape.
He should wait at least until 2028. Joe will be out of the way and after 8 years as VP, Kamala's viability will be clearer. All Democrats understand that we need to win. If Kamala's support is waning at that time, he could legitimately challenge her. Besides his historic Georgia Senate term doesn't end til 2027. We need him to hold that seat in the blue column for as long as possible.

R111 We did, his name is President Barack Obama. We we're moving in the right direction, then a bunch of deplorables decided to give us Trump for four horrible years.
And everyone stop with the digs at black democrats in the party. Remember, black people are paramount to the democratic party and is a huge reason Ossoff is even in the US Senate. Stop with the uncalled for disparagment of them.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | January 25, 2022 7:43 AM |
I think it will be very doubtful that Biden will run again in 2024. 4 years in the presidency really ages every man who's ever had the job. Joe Biden is already at an advanced age and shows the signs of it physically. His mind may be fine in 2024, but I don't believe his body is going to hold out that long. Plus, I believe Dr. Jill will want him to spend his last years in calmness and comfort, not fighting demon republicans day after day.

Biden will be out after 4 years. He'll leave and start work on his presidential library and his memoir covering his four years in the white house.
That'll probably be the best thing for Biden.

I support Biden but to me he and Pelosi are both parts of the problem. They have been in Washington too long and have an investment to the status quo. We really need fresh leadership. I will admit I thought Obama was going to be that person but he allowed Republicans to run over him quite a bit.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | January 25, 2022 5:33 PM |
The Democratic Party has serious issues.
They brag about being a big tent party, but the tent is too big.
Biden and Pelosi are no more "the problem" than the "Squad" or Bernie or Manchin and Synema. The problem is the party is trying to stand for too much and embrace everyone. It now stands for nothing.
When you have a party that cannot unite on something as basic as voting rights, you no longer have a party.
These are the same reasons Obama's agenda was stalled. Democrats began resigning from Congress the day he was elected. They spent 2 years arguing over health care! Really? It was ridiculous.
Democrats way too often miss the forest as they argue about the individual trees.

A platform means nothing if you allow the other party to out maneuver you with the courts, the legislative branches and is currently stacking the deck thru gerrymandering to prevent Democrats from ever controlling the government again.
Democrats are about to be voted out of office because no one is minding the store. GOP is robbing them blind!
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 25, 2022 6:21 PM |
And that happens because democrats do not care enough to vote in every election. You can't just vote every 4 years people.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 25, 2022 6:55 PM |
Republicans are motivated by hate, fear and resentment. Those are great motivators. Democrats are motivated by what? They want a fair society, they want an empathetic society? That's not as strong a reason.
I knew a German historian who told me the rightwing - wherever you go in the world - votes. They are a minority (usually about 25% of the population) but dammit, they always vote. Liberals don't and when turnout is low, the rightwing always wins. We need somebody to inspire the left. Joe Biden ain't it. I'm very, very worried.

These were the numbers in September. Haven't found any current numbers yet. I certainly haven't heard anything negative about Ossoff or Warnock from anyone here.
[quote] Georgians give President Joe Biden a net approval rating of +4%, with 44% approving and 40% disapproving of Biden’s overall job performance since he became President of the United States. A further 13% of respondents say they neither approve nor disapprove.
[quote] Georgia’s Senators, both of whom have been in office for just seven months after winning runoff elections in January 2021, also achieve positive net approval ratings: 40% approve and 33% disapprove of Senator Jon Ossoff, and 39% approve and 31% disapprove of Senator Raphael Warnock, producing net approval ratings of +7% and +8%, respectively. Notable fifths of respondents say they neither approve nor disapprove of Ossoff’s (19%) and Warnock’s (21%) performances so far.
[quote] Similar majorities of 2020 Joe Biden voters approve of Jon Ossoff’s (70%) and Raphael Warnock’s (71%) performances as Senators, while 2020 Donald Trump voters are slightly more likely to disapprove of Ossoff (60%) than Warnock (54%).

This is what drives me insane about voting. People do not take any personal responsibility. Check your voter registration at least once a year and at least 6 weeks before an election. If your state requires a photo ID, then have it at the ready when you're voting. If you don't have a picture ID, how in the hell are you getting through life without any proof of identity? Do some research before you vote, know where your polling place is.
Just because republicans make it harder to vote, it doesn't mean you have to just roll over and take it.
The bottom line is if voting is not a priority for someone, then no matter how easy you make it, people are still not going to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 26, 2022 12:09 PM |
R131, it is not about having a photo ID though this is the Republicans narrative. It is about limiting ways that people can vote that is the problem.

R129 I am not here to defend Republicans. You need to ask a Republican why they do what they do.
[Quote]And what exactly would yoou have Democrats do to stop Republicans at the state level?
Federal legislation won't solve all the problems but it would significantly improve voter access. The specifics are too much to type here. See the link below. Here's a quick summary:
The Freedom to Vote Act would standardize voting election laws across the country and would significantly expand voting access, including reversing the effects of dozens of new state-level voting restrictions passed this year. The John Lewis bill would restore key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that have been struck down or weakened by the Supreme Court, and change the way federal courts handle election cases.

[Quote]Just because republicans make it harder to vote, it doesn't mean you have to just roll over and take it.
R131 Voting is important, but not as important as keeping your job and feeding your family. Sometimes the obstacles are too great. People should not have to decide whether to miss a day's to vote for someone who may or may not win and then may or may not (probably not) make a difference in their lives. Eventually some people reach the point of diminishing returns. We are at that point.
Everyone does not have a photo ID. Driver's license is the default, but if you don't have a driver's license then you have to come up with an acceptable photo ID. Come out of your Ivory Tower Sir. Everyone doesn't have your charmed life. Many people can't even afford a car. But that is not even the biggest problem.
State Legislatures are making it harder to actually vote, by: limiting the days and times you can vote (forcing people to take off work to vote instead of convenient Sunday voting); limiting the places you can vote (closing the places in your neighborhood and forcing you to drive or take a bus ride across town to vote); Delaying your voting experience (closing locations in urban areas and/or consolidating them forces everyone to one location resulting in 8+ hours of standing in line and missing work and/or having to pay for extra daycare if you have small kids).
This has all been covered in the mainstream media. Did you really not know any of this?
The GOP knows what they are doing. Sure people need to do what they can, but the GOP does not have to make it harder. They should be making it easier for people to vote. This needs to stop.

by Anonymous | reply 144 | January 26, 2022 7:03 PM |
R143, this is NOT about identification! It is about fewer machines in communities likely to vote for a Democrat so that people have to wait in long lines. It is about reducing voting options like shortening the early voting period. Making it more absentee voting more difficult.

We understand all of those things R145, but you can deal with those things if voting is a priority to you. It may be harder and take you a little bit longer, but it can be done. Because the reward is that you will be able to vote for someone who will help make the process easier.

The Texas GOP's new voting rules close down polling stations in Democratic districts, make voting by mail almost impossible (which is stupid because the vast majority of people in Texas who vote by mail are over 65 and Fox News' demographic - they didn't think this through). "Partisan poll watchers" will be legally able to accompany voters into booths to 'oversee' their votes, they can interrogate voters and poll workers. They'll no doubt be openly carrying guns, too. And you can guess which segments of the voting population will be targeted. If the state lege doesn't approve of who won an election, they can overturn the election.
It's Banana Republic Time!

[Quote]We understand all of those things [R145], but you can deal with those things if voting is a priority to you.
R146 Why does a voter have to make a priority? Why do you even need to think about it. Voting should be like going to the gas station or mailing a letter. If you want people to vote then the "process" should have no thought to it at all. People are busy especially the least among us who often have multiple jobs.
If politicians really wanted voting to be a priority then THEY would make it one. You don't do that by making it harder to vote.
Asking someone to prioritize something is signaling to them it doesn't matter.
And if you are making it harder for certain people to vote then you are guaranteeing that it will be a low priority.
This is not difficult to comprehend. Why are you trying to make it that way?

R109 I'm not R87 but it's sort of a meme that he's gay or a twink, partly because he's often mistaken for being gay. When some photo or video of him goes around, there's always someone in the comments asking if he's gay or saying they thought he was gay (most hilariously, last Valentine's day, the most-liked reply to a tweet he made about his wife was someone exclaiming "WAIT YOU'RE STRAIGHT???"). Ossoff's tweets referencing Taylor Swift and Lorde and his tiktok videos don't exactly help with the confusion. While those were probably the brainchild of female or gay staffers more than anything, there was a time when during a panel with Senator Gillibrand, some fangirl asked what their favourite Taylor Swift songs were and Ossoff did have an answer to that question. Frequently he's mistaken for gay because someone mixed him up with Buttigieg, but other times it's clearly not that, because there are occasional remarks like "I thought Ossoff was Pete Buttigieg but cool!" and so on. As far as I know, though, it's mainly jokes and people who don't know much about Ossoff saying he's gay, no one is out there insisting his wife is a beard or anything like that.
However while Ossoff is popular among gay men, his most devoted fans are women. There used to be a lot of zoomer ones but currently they're mainly middle aged. They're always quick to insist that he is MANLY and DOMINANT and a DADDY. As mentioned upthread, his female fans are often black, so unsurprisingly he has a sizeable LSA thread. The thread used to have more active participants but currently it has approximately five users regularly posting in it. It's mostly just commenting on recent updates about him and off-the-wall theorizing about his personal life and future goals, though sometimes they dig social media to find lesser-known stuff about him. I will probably soon post interesting findings (mainly from LSA, for those who do not care to find the thread or read through it), as well as some of the stuff I mentioned above.
To make up for this wall of text and for interrupting the riveting discussion on voting rights, here's a video of Ossoff from behind adjusting his pants during the congressional baseball game.

R87 Anytime you have a good looking man, there will be some gay in the corner insisting the man is gay (really it is just wishful thinking most of the time).
Ossoff also has a southern accent which fuels speculation. I remember being shocked the first time I heard him speak. I thought it was a joke. I'm used to New York Jews. Most people don't look at a Jew and expect to hear a southern twang. LOL That makes him suspect. A southern accent is tricky for straight men. I think it only works for rednecks and some Black guys.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 30, 2022 10:31 AM |
Here is Ossoff talking about his favourite Taylor Swift song. There is of course someone in the comments saying that they think he's "fruity". His fans on LSA believed he was lying about liking Taylor Swift to appease his fangirls, but what do you think?
Also R156 I heard he heavily exaggerates his accent and a lot of people in Georgia can tell, but they mostly find it funny or endearing.

Here's Ossoff meeting Hong Seok-Cheon, whose wikipedia page starts off with: "Hong Seok-cheon (born February 3, 1971) is a South Korean actor, television personality, restaurateur and member of the dissolved Democratic Labor Party. He caused considerable controversy in his home country when he came out as gay in 2000, and remains the most prominent openly gay celebrity in Korea.[1][2][3]"
From what I can tell from the caption and a similar post on the US Korean embassy instagram page, Ossoff talked to Hong about various political topics, as well as Korean drama shows. According to LSA, the English translation of the post's caption at one part says "This young politician with manners and humility kindness is even handsome like an actor. Haha." but google translate doesn't give me anything similar to that and I can't read Korean. Regardless, I hope Datalounge is happy to see the Senate twink getting along with an eldergay.
