Should there be a federal holiday to honor LGBT?

The Noah SVU thread got me thinking. We don't have one. Why is that?

No, because it will get monopolized by the T anyway.

Plus, not all groups need a special day. MLK honors a particularly great American while Juneteenth honor an important day in which ALL Americans were free. While I think having both days revolving around African American issues is a bit much, I am not going to complain about extra holidays. Plus, after everything African Americans have given the US, and after they have been through so much shit, two holidays seems like the least we can do.

But, we don’t need these days for everyone. Just because we give something to Black people doesn’t mean everyone else needs some too.

Juneteenth makes complete sense to me as well, because it’s like a more realistic July 4. I think MLK Day could fall under the same principle, because it marks the entire nation gaining a secure right to vote - that’s why it makes more sense than, say, the date that (white) women gained the right to vote.

I do wonder whether President’s Day will be replaced by other holidays in a few more generations.

If there was going to be an LBGT holiday, I’d pick the date of the Obergefell decision, celebrating the recognition of legal rights.

R2 That date wouldn’t work because it is in June.”; June 26th. Can’t see us getting two federal holidays in June; they usually try and spread them out, especially when July 4th is a week later. That would be three weeks in a row with three day weekends.

It is only a matter of time before Columbus day becomes Indigenous Peoples Day.

Not that it matters but Presidents Day’s official name is still Washington’s Birthday.
