Do they have to reveal the cause of Bob Saget's death?

After the autopsy is it public info or can the family opt not to have it released.

Seems odd if they have to. There is so much privacy about health facts but none about death?

You contradict yourself, but that doesn't matter.

I would think a celebrities family would like it known that they didn't OD in some hotel room

Cause of death is required to be listed on death certificate by local statues in nearly if not all fifty states. Who gets access to official death certificates listing COD and when is another matter.

Generally death certificates are public information and thus anyone can obtain copy. However various states have restrictions on who can obtain a death certificate, and or at least one listing COD.

In NYS for example, only close relatives can obtain a death certificate, including the spouse, parent, child or sibling of the deceased, and other persons who have a documented lawful right or claim, a documented medical need, or have a New York State court order.

In Florida (where decedent was at time of death), death certificates not listing COD are available to general public. For deaths < 50 years Florida restricts access to certificates listing SSNs and COD.

Thus it seems in this instance unless Saget family or someone with legal authority to do so releases COD information, general public won't find out. Well there is the always good chance TMZ or some other entity that deals in muck will pay good money to someone with access for a copy of said DC listing COD.

Case in point, COD of Sidney Poitier is now known from his death certificate.

"Sidney Poitier, the renowned actor, director and activist, died of a combination of heart failure, Alzheimer’s dementia and prostate cancer, according to his death certificate."

In California, death certificates are not public information. This happened in the 1980s thanks to pressure from Hollywood stars who were terrified that their deaths of AIDS would be public knowledge. Saget is a resident of CA but died in FL so I'm assuming his death certificate will be issued under FL law, but if the family gets some attorneys involved, they may not release it. We'll just have to wait and see.

Usually family/management let the fans know if it's natural causes, especially as it occurred away from his home, in a hotel room. If they don't, TMZ or the good old Enquirer will.
