Latinos warn Democrats about growing problem with Hispanic voters

Democrats admit they’re losing ground with Latino voters.

But Latino Democratic leaders and operatives are increasingly worried that time is running out to do anything that would make a significant difference ahead of the 2022 midterms, when the party needs a robust Latino turnout to preserve its slim majorities in Congress. For years, those leaders have warned that the party needs to invest earlier in outreach, hire more Latinos for decision-making positions and talk to Latino voters about more issues than just immigration. But even after a presidential election marked by former President Donald Trump’s impressive gains with Latinos across the country — not just in Latino-heavy South Texas and South Florida — they see a lack of urgency in addressing those issues. Between that and a failure to keep pace with GOP efforts to communicate with Latinos on newer platforms, there’s a creeping fear that the traditional Democratic advantage with Latino voters will continue to erode in November.

“Intellectually, Democrats know they have a problem,” said Maria Teresa Kumar, founding president and CEO of Voto Latino, a grassroots political organization. “But I haven’t seen the investment that needs to happen for it to translate.”

Latinos — the largest of the nation’s fastest-growing demographic groups — have long been viewed as solidly blue Democratic voters. While President Joe Biden captured the majority of the Latino vote in 2020, Trump improved his margins in 78 of the nation’s 100 majority-Hispanic counties. Since then, a spate of reports, analyses and polls have made it clear that the party has reason to worry if it doesn’t change its current approach. A recent report by Democratic research firm Equis found that a majority of Latinos believe that Democrats take them for granted. It also found that Trump’s policies on the coronavirus pandemic and economy were popular among Latinos and that GOP attacks claiming Democrats embrace socialism have been effective.

Another analysis by Democratic voter data firm Catalist found that, while six in 10 Latino voters backed Biden, Trump’s share of the Latino vote increased by 8 percentage points compared to 2016.

Kumar points to Florida — where Trump saw some of his largest gains with Latinos, both among conservative-leaning Cuban Americans and voters from other Latin American countries, such as Colombia, Venezuela and Nicaragua — as an example of Democrats having “a deficit in communications and connection.”

“Trump and the Republican Party never left Florida. They kept cultivating and communicating with the Latino community,” Kumar said. “Sure, a lot of it was disinformation and messaging that Biden is a communist and a socialist, but they kept doing it — and it was effective.”

One Democratic super PAC found that the party’s English-language ad spending dwarfed Spanish-language ads in numerous Latino-heavy House districts that Republicans flipped in 2020.

According to a spreadsheet shared with POLITICO — assembled out of frustration by the super PAC, which favored more Spanish-language ads — Democratic groups combined to spend almost $5 million in English-language ads in California’s 39th Congressional District, and not a cent on Spanish-language ads.

In that district, which is more than 30 percent Latino, Democratic incumbent Gil Cisneros lost to now-GOP Rep. Young Kim by just over 4,000 votes.

In the nearby 48th District, which is about 20 percent Latino, Democrats spent just $33,000 in Spanish-language ads, compared to more than $12 million spent in English-language ads. Democratic incumbent Harley Rouda lost narrowly there to Republican Michelle Steel.

“It should be a wake-up call to Democrats. When there are no people of color at the decision-making level of a campaign, our constituency becomes an afterthought and you underperform because you’re not reaching out to them with the same priority as white suburban ‘persuadable’ voters,” said Chuck Rocha, a Democratic strategist and former senior adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) presidential campaign.

The Latinx need to get with the program or GTFO.

by Anonymousreply 1January 18, 2022 7:06 PM

Mid-terms will be a bloodbath for Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 2January 18, 2022 9:07 PM

Notice there's not one X in Sabrina Rodriguez's tweet or article. The Democrats thought adding it to the word 'Latino' would bring them over? I grew up in Miami. Other than a couple of my best friends, most of the Cubans I knew came from very conservative families who fucking adored Reagan, many of the parents/grandparents fearing socialism that they'd fled under Castro. They've always been easy pickings for the right.

by Anonymousreply 3January 18, 2022 9:22 PM

There is also a danger of losing Asian voters soon. It's something number crunching pollsters have been warning about for a while now. Mostly because of the a Dems education policies

by Anonymousreply 4January 18, 2022 9:25 PM

Yep. Latinos and Asians are catching on that "diverse" means black.

by Anonymousreply 5January 18, 2022 9:34 PM

And losing black men

by Anonymousreply 6January 18, 2022 11:44 PM
Mid-terms will be a bloodbath for Democrats.

It doesn’t have to be that way but I read posts from hard-left extremists on this site and they seem to not care. They seem to want a bloodbath for Democrats. They don’t care at all. It’s sad.

by Anonymousreply 7January 18, 2022 11:50 PM

One guess as to why.

by Anonymousreply 8January 18, 2022 11:52 PM

I think the "x" in "Latinx" is more a product of the academy, rather than Democrats

by Anonymousreply 9January 18, 2022 11:55 PM

Oh, fuck the Latino vote. Seriously.

I am so sick of hearing these dire warnings to cater to Latinos. How much more can Dems truly cater to Latinos?

The Latinos who are drifting away can't be won back. They're either religious nuts who care only about abortion and hating gays, money grubbers who worship Trump, or selfish hypocrites (they don't care about other immigrants now that they've got theirs). In other words, typical Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 10January 19, 2022 1:30 AM

Latinos are the fasted growing population in the US. They are 25% of the US population compared to blacks who are 13%. As whites decrease Latinos take their place. They also control the political future of Texas and Florida the two fastest growing states in the US along with California. Fuck the Latinos means RIP for the Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 11January 19, 2022 2:00 AM

Sorry, Latinos are only around 20% of US population but since they have the most kids they’ll be at 25% soon enough.

by Anonymousreply 12January 19, 2022 2:02 AM

R4, crime policies, too.

by Anonymousreply 13January 19, 2022 2:03 AM

The Democrats have a messaging problem, and it isn't limited to the Latino, Asian or Black communities. Biden gave a barn-burning speech on voting rights last week, and the silence was deafening. Where are the surrogates? Where are the elected Democrats across the nation, and why aren't they out there screaming at the top of their lungs about what's going on? They have got to wake up and realize they've got the policy wonks in the bag, and educated people who will read various sources to glean the truth follow it all very closely... but that's far, far less than the hoi polloi that, frankly, need bread and circus to get their attention.

Trump understands this. He said, to their delight, "I love the uneducated." And they believed him; at least, enough to swing a couple of districts to the Republicans. This should both terrify and energize the Democrats. They've simply got to get up off their asses and realize that half the people are below average, and without them, there isn't going to be a nation, let alone a Democratic party in power.

Take, for instance, the fact that the Republicans, through the use of the filibuster, have ended the child care payments the Democrats included in the last big bill they passed (and that's how long ago they managed to get something done). If the shoe were on the other foot, Republicans would be out there having town hall meetings to highlight the people who benefited, and then lost, one of the best things the Democrats have done for the lower-middle and lower class people since Social Security. Democrats have got to stop being afraid to "go there" and just spew the things that the audience needs to hear to motivate them to go to the polls. Here's a straight-forward message (one that should sound familiar to anyone who paid attention in the [italic]successful[/italic] Georgia run-offs): "If the Republicans take the House, there will never be a child tax credit again. If the Democrats keep the House and strengthen their majority in the Senate, they will get it done. Take it to the bank, because you can count on it."

Of course, they have to actually come through when they win.

by Anonymousreply 14January 19, 2022 2:33 AM

Completely agree, R14. Repugs have their messages and they keep repeating those messages. Democrats are either infighting with or catering to the silly progressives, who don't actually win many elections. No consistent messaging, and any messages that are out there do not get amplified by the rank and file Dems.

And to the person who said "fuck Latinos," I am sure you don't care that this also means "fuck the next election." Latinos used to be a huge voting bloc for Democrats. Yes, Cubans were always conservative, but the rest were generally not. As evil as the right wing is, Democrats are now seen as out of touch, condescending (no one likes to be viewed as a perpetual victim), and insulting (see LatinX).

by Anonymousreply 15January 19, 2022 2:41 AM

Weak minds are very susceptible to propaganda.

by Anonymousreply 16January 19, 2022 3:30 AM

Yes, and you need those weak minds to vote Dem or we're fucked. Democrats need to keep repeating their messages in the same way as the Cons. Calling them morons and ignoring them will lead to nothing but a permanently red country.

by Anonymousreply 17January 19, 2022 3:39 AM

r17, I guess you think it's cool for Republicans to call anyone they don't like a "socialist" or for them to sneer at "New York values" or "San Francisco values"

Politico is a site for right-wing hacks

by Anonymousreply 18January 19, 2022 3:48 AM

"Calling them morons and ignoring them will lead to nothing but a permanently red country."

But it's cool for Trump to call tons of people (especially black people) "low IQ"

by Anonymousreply 19January 19, 2022 3:49 AM

Bullshit article. And there are plenty of Latinos who vote Republican.

All of these 'oh the Dems are in disarray' articles is fucking ridiculous.

The other side is literally drinking pee and sending Goober white nationalists to overthrow the government.

by Anonymousreply 20January 19, 2022 3:58 AM

Crime is the number one issue that will hurt Dems in 2022. They overreacted with some of their initiatives due to Floyd’s murder. People need to feel safe.

Also Trump being off social media is another thing that will hurt Dems. He just has no presence. So they can’t make it all about him, which is a guaranteed win for Dems. If Trump did a George W Bush and went away for good, Republicans would have a “contract with America” type midterm. But his ego, along with his cult members, always leaves hope for Dems.

The one thing I can say about Republican Latinos, is at least they don’t want to turn the US into the shit holes they left.

by Anonymousreply 21January 19, 2022 4:02 AM

I wish people would understand Latino is a useless label and not helpful. Older White and white-identified Latinos align with Republicans because most live in Southern states and are diehard Catholics who are pro-life, anti-gay and hold racist views on Blacks and Indigenous. Many Mexicans who come here may be racially blended in appearance but many do not perceive themselves as Native American or people of color because in Mexico, they have their own category as "mestizo" and aspire to whiteness. Black Latinos from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic blend into the African-American community and vote Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 22January 19, 2022 4:15 AM

White Latinos right now are like what Italians, Irish, Jews, Greeks and Polish used to be. Latinos are not seen as white because they conflict with America's Anglo-speaking majority-Protestant one-drop rule culture. In the next generation, people will look back and wonder why we used the term Latino and put millions of people of various ethnic origins and skin colors who just happen to speak Spanish into one racial category.

by Anonymousreply 23January 19, 2022 4:23 AM
Crime is the number one issue that will hurt Dems in 2022.

Full stop. That absolutely is not the number one issue that will hurt Dems. No one is even "checking" for that at the moment. Who is even talking about that at the moment? Get out of your bubble.

Voting rights will hurt them. The handling of COVID will hurt them. That is not the biggest thing at all, at this point.

by Anonymousreply 24January 19, 2022 4:34 AM

R9

Yes, it's a product of the academy, and Democrats are using it like the dumbasses they are.

by Anonymousreply 25January 19, 2022 4:39 AM

Latinos are a working-class demographic. Raising the minimum wage, strengthening unions, expanding public health care, and forgiving consumer debt would do wonders to improve the Democrats' standing with Latinos. But these are measures that centrist Democrats are uniquely ill-equipped to take, hence the foot-dragging the article speaks about. Either because they're beholden to corporate donors, or because they're ideologically committed to the Reaganite status quo, these Democrats just won't do what's necessary.

by Anonymousreply 26January 19, 2022 4:47 AM

Fat, Catholic Latinos with micro peen are never Democrat to begin with. Try talking sense into college-graduated women, they are more sensible and rational.

by Anonymousreply 27January 19, 2022 4:49 AM

R24 You are making zero sense. How will voting rights hurt Dems?? How will Covid hurt Dems? Either specify or don’t type at all.

And maybe you are living in a bubble if you think crime will not be an issue.

by Anonymousreply 28January 19, 2022 4:52 AM

I wish dumb, trashy people would go back to never voting, like before Trump.

by Anonymousreply 29January 19, 2022 4:57 AM

r24 Consider the foaming at the mouth responses here... the assumption that they must be bigots, uneducated, yadda yadda yadda. How is that winning favor?

Yes, if you care about crime, please by all means vote for the party that worships at the feet of a con artist and his family of grifters, the party of the spoiled rich brat who fucks teenagers and drives them across state lines, the party that defies subpoenas as they try desperately to cover for their members who actively participated in an insurrection against the government because democracy has become an inconvenience for them, and on and on.

Yes, if you care about crime, please by all means vote for *that* party.

by Anonymousreply 31January 19, 2022 5:15 AM

What does the authoer mean "immigration?"

A lot of Latino CITIZENS are NOT in support of letting illegal immigrants just come here and get citizenship after they went through the proper channels themselves. But most Democrats mean "give 'undocumented' citizenship" when they say "immigration reform" vs. let's enforce the current immigration policies and stop letting illegal immigration continue.

by Anonymousreply 32January 19, 2022 5:24 AM

r31 sounds like both of the primary parties... it's really difficult to tell which party you mean. so, I guess bias decides the way.

all this spells out more for which party not to vote for... than providing any reason to vote for a specific party.

and both parties have let their bigotry flags fly high... focusingon calling out the opposition while rallying behind their own. Well, their own until they offer up an opinion contrary to the party line. The amount of slurs to be heard when that happens. . . just imagine for a moment if you came out supporting the other party for a week, how many friends do you think you'd have left at the end of it?

Hispanics, Asians, Jews, etc. are well-aware that decades of Dem focus on Blacks completely excludes them and their concerns. No wonder then that minority communities whose support Dems took for granted are looking elsewhere.

R35 Exactly what Dems say. Including those in party positions of power and government.

by Anonymousreply 36January 19, 2022 8:30 AM

Oh R35 and as far as your link, Trump vis-a-vis Jew hatred is no different to US Presidents going back to George Washington. Yet Trump negotiated an entente between the UAE and Israel that, for the first time, was neither at the expense of Israel or America.

by Anonymousreply 37January 19, 2022 8:35 AM

R37's mindset is all typical of those who love tarnishing the left with antisemitism accusations. Antisemitism from the right is fine with them because they know the right (out of hatred for Muslims and Arabs) will try its best to protect the interests of Israel, even at the expense of America itself. Say that Israel or Jews wield Congress like a child with his toy if you want... just make sure that Israel can keep stealing other people's houses and lands undisturbed, is r37's true feelings.

by Anonymousreply 38January 19, 2022 8:56 AM

R38 Jew hatred is bi-partisan, entrenched/acceptable in the US (and everywhere else for that matter). You're posts reiterate that reality.

by Anonymousreply 39January 19, 2022 9:23 AM

Let Latinos vote for Republicans if they are so desperate to suck up to Anglos and think they will do so much to help them.

by Anonymousreply 40January 19, 2022 9:32 AM

R10 Exactly! And this is another reason to stop being pro-immigration. Look at how these assholes turn on the party that has helped them out the most.

by Anonymousreply 41January 19, 2022 9:34 AM

Unless you're black, Muslim or trans, the Dems don't care, well that's what Latinos and other minority groups think.

by Anonymousreply 42January 19, 2022 9:38 AM

There were several illegal Mexican immigrants who supported Trump who were deported. They were such weird stories.

by Anonymousreply 43January 19, 2022 9:45 AM

R4 I think the anti-vax and anti-mask stance has hurt Republican inroads into Asian communities. East Asians are generally fine with large central government, have a trust in science, and don’t mind government involvement in personal life. They look at anti-vaxers as the crazies they are.

However if Republicans hit Democrats on anti-Asian policy, including limiting their access to elite schools, and the anti-Asian sentiment of BLM, they can still win over Asian voters.

by Anonymousreply 44January 19, 2022 9:49 AM
Unless you're black, Muslim or trans,

So you have to tell me that all that pandering to the Hispanic community is all for nothing. I mean democrats created social programs to benefit them at the expense of other non Hispanic minority groups. All that free money was all for nothing. It couldn't happen to a better party.

by Anonymousreply 50January 19, 2022 11:02 AM
There were several illegal Mexican immigrants who supported Trump who were deported. They were such weird stories.

Latinos are so pathetic and stupid and desperate to be accepted by whites. Democrats are the ones trying to get these idiot illegals free healthcare, citizenship and all sorts of benefits, yet they want to support Republicans who hate them and said Mexicans are rapists? Real intelligent people.🙄

by Anonymousreply 51January 19, 2022 11:10 AM

Latinos have a massive superiority complex, that's the reason they look down on illegal immigrants as they didn't do it the "right way", they also love the strong man image that Trump pushed.

by Anonymousreply 52January 19, 2022 11:48 AM

R52, it’s ignorant to speak of large groups in sweeping generalizations

by Anonymousreply 53January 19, 2022 12:10 PM

Every time I turn on NPR I get to hear about BIPOC because obviously all non white people experience life the exact same way. That goes along with putting all whites in the white supremacy category. Maybe Latinos see that as the bs it is.

by Anonymousreply 57January 19, 2022 1:07 PM

Always a good strategy to vote for an opposing party out of spite. Okay, that'll help you.

by Anonymousreply 58January 19, 2022 1:11 PM

Maybe because the Democrats don’t pander to that community? The Dems seem too preoccupied with the black vote and seem to overlook hispanics who make up more the the US than African Americans do.

by Anonymousreply 59January 19, 2022 1:15 PM

Use of terms like BIPOC don’t help. It’s the language of the cultural elite that mainstream America hates

by Anonymousreply 60January 19, 2022 1:29 PM

Democrats started bleeding Latino support in 2020 when Democrats and Joe Biden stopped talking about immigration to win back white voters in the rust belt. Contrary to what others are saying, Democrats need to talk about immigration MORE, not less, to win Latinos back.

However, this may hurt them with white voters in the rustbelt, which puts the electoral college at risk. So it looks like Dems are in a bind.

by Anonymousreply 61January 19, 2022 1:32 PM

The same is true of AA voter, with Charlamain the god complaining to VP Harris that Biden is not in charge and they are losing black voters. To the latinos and the AAs I say - DO YOU THINK THE REPUBLICANS ARE WORKING FOR YOU? FFS.

by Anonymousreply 63January 19, 2022 2:20 PM

Immigration doesn't move the needle for American Latinos. It's not a voting issue for them above abortion or taxes. They figure, we got in the "right" way, why should anyone else have it easier.

In 2020, there was plenty of immigration talk and support from Dems. And Trump was out there saying Mexicans were rapists. There was supposed to be a "Latino wave" that punished him for that. Didn't happen. Latinos handed Florida to Trump anyway.

They are by and large religious conservatives.

by Anonymousreply 64January 19, 2022 2:35 PM

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned, which I heard from a former Mexican-American colleague of mine, is that many Mexicans still remember some sort of immigration reform that Reagan did in the 80s. I guess it allowed more people from Mexico to come into the country, and many feel loyal to Republicans. Republicans also aligned with their conservative, Catholic values.

I think one of the big problems with Democrats is not having a strong, clear position on anything. All of this language has to be confusing especially if English isn’t your first language. A good example is “defund the police”, thrown out into the world, and then repeatedly clarified on Sunday morning political shows. “What we really mean is this…to be clear…blah blah” Then everyone is surprised when the cut and dry message of one party, easily delivered in a political ad, is preferred over sloppy messaging in another. Not everyone lives in college campus non-profit he/his/zir/hir world!

by Anonymousreply 78January 19, 2022 5:30 PM

Some of these posts aren't even by Democrats. They're by racist Republicans who are taking advantage of the opportunity to voice feelings they've long held. by Anonymousreply 85January 19, 2022 9:00 PM

What does immigration have to do with latino voters who are third, fourth, fifth generation Americans? Absolutely nothing. That is one of the reasons Dems are failing with hispanic voters. They act like all Latinos just swam across a body of water to get here. Most were born and raised and 100% American. They need to find something else to win over the hispanic vote.

by Anonymousreply 86January 19, 2022 9:34 PM
nobody in America is more racist or interacts less with minorities than white liberals.

I must say, minorities don’t care what politics you are if you’re a white gay man. I live in a very dense black and Arab and Muslim state, and they don’t care. You’re a Republican, or Republican-leaning, I believe? Arab Catholics here vote mostly Republican and you’re still a POS to them because you’re gay. It doesn’t matter if you’re pro-life, conservative values, abstinent, etc.. Believe me. I’ve seen it. I’ve experienced it on numerous occasions. If you’re a white gay man, it doesn’t matter your politics to minorities. I don’t know about straight liberals, but as a gay man, me staying away from them, which I most certainly do, is a matter of practicality and survival.

No - using the fact that white Catholics tend to be liberal and vote as such does not translate here. Hispanic voters are more likely to vote similarly regardless of the branch of Christianity.

by Anonymousreply 92January 19, 2022 10:23 PM

R72 We don’t care about winning them over anymore. Democrats have already done a shitload for them, and they still complain. Let them vote Republican and see how well it works out for them. They must enjoy being called rapists and criminals by Republicans and they must want all the benefits they have received taken away.

If they’re fourth and fifth generation and they consider themselves white anyway (which many of them do), then why do they want special treatment if they consider themselves white? They need to make up their minds. They can’t claim to be a minority one minute and then play white the next.

by Anonymousreply 94January 19, 2022 10:40 PM

Wait until they have to start going after the muslim vote in 20 or 30 years, that's why dems are pushing for trans over gay matters, as muslims are accepting of a man transitioning to a woman.

Mamy Latinos are working class, and many Latinos and Asians are shopkeepers. To treat looting, vandalism and organized robbery as unproblematic and the pursuit of "petty crimes" racist doesn't endear the Dems to their desired voters, I imagine. It's never only a shop that gets ransacked - it's probably someone's livelihood or even a whole family's source of income.

R91 What have Black people received from Democrats other than symbolic nods towards representation? There's a reason why Black men are turning away from the Democrats. What people feel about a ruling party tends to reflect how much they think their economic interests are protected by its policies. And both Latinos and blacks are disappointed with what they've seen from Democrats nothing. Biden wasn't kidding when he told his rich donors in 2020 that nothing would fundamentally change.

by Anonymousreply 102January 20, 2022 3:52 PM

R102 well said. My life hasn't changed since I became of age and I could vote. All black people get is symbolic BLM signs and pathetic pandering from democrat politicians. Taking a knee and wearing kante cloth. Pathetic bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 103January 20, 2022 8:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 105January 20, 2022 9:06 PM

The fastest growing ethnic/racial immigrant group in America are Asians.

The black population of America is about 14%, and if rates of intermarriage and current immigration patterns continue, is predicted by Pew Research Centre either to remain static or decrease.

When America becomes less than 50% white, it will still be a minority majority country: whites will still be the largest single voting bloc, whilst the Asians, Latinos, blacks, etc., who do not make up a unified single voting bloc, will fight for a slice of the political pie amongst them.

And, as it is, the growing Asian population is already angry about what it sees as punishment for being successful financially and academically.

by Anonymousreply 106January 20, 2022 9:18 PM

2020 was an inflection point that could mark a longterm Latin trend voting Republican. There are many reasons for this trend, but one huge reason is Democrats are not engaging in the type of sophisticated ground game and targeted media barrage Republicans are engaging in. Even now, Repubs are kicking Democrats’ asses with Latin media and voter registration

by Anonymousreply 107March 1, 2022 11:23 PM

Republicans are also doing an incredible job allying with Latinos in evangelical churches and organizations

by Anonymousreply 108March 1, 2022 11:24 PM

Now you can see shithole Latinos who got into the US because of the Democrats' policies, now want to shove their anti-progressive way of life down our throat. Why would the Democrats still want these shithole Latinos to come in after all? Being shithole, low-income laborers doesn't mean that they are progressive.

by Anonymousreply 109March 1, 2022 11:34 PM

The idea that the US will become more progressive as the white population decreases is bs.

I think the biggest issue for Hispanics and even some blacks is that the Dems are seen as soft on crime. Defund the police probably did permanent damage to the Dems with Hispanics.

by Anonymousreply 110March 1, 2022 11:40 PM

R106 Black population has been increasing, I don’t know what you’re talking about. How the hell could intermarriage erase black people with its 400 year history of black / white mixing? Something like over 50% of African Americans have white ancestry. I don’t know what theories you’re digging up but none of this is new and will decrease anything.

by Anonymousreply 111March 1, 2022 11:40 PM

Pew Research doesn’t add up.

by Anonymousreply 112March 1, 2022 11:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 113March 1, 2022 11:44 PM

And as far as Democrats “pandering to blacks”, it’s all smoke and mirrors to pander to Latinos / Hispanics.

The voter registration drama is totally to benefit Latinos.

by Anonymousreply 114March 1, 2022 11:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 115March 2, 2022 12:29 AM

Latinos in Texas (and Texas has the US' largest Latino population) tend to be socially conservative so these fucking culture wars the GOP is promoting tend to find favor with them. It's up to Democrats to be more pragmatic and stop peddling the Latinx bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 116March 2, 2022 12:32 AM

Asians never were solidly Democratic. Many Asian ethnicity are very Republican

R106 The fastest growing ethnic immigrant group in America is Asians.

by Anonymousreply 118March 2, 2022 1:07 AM

R111 Do the math. Blacks are 14% of the population in America. Whites are still at least 62%. The rate of intermarriage and interbreeding means that the black population will get lighter much faster than the white population will get darker.

Even if the white population falls below 50% they'll still be the largest racial voting bloc. The other 51% will be split up amongst blacks, Hispanics, Asians, none if whom are monolithic blocs. The white vote will still be crucial.

by Anonymousreply 119March 2, 2022 1:13 AM

Texas Latinos have always been leery of Latino politicians because they have too much experience with Latinos getting into office to make themselves and all their relatives rich. They won't automatically vote for a Latino just because of a Spanish name. Julian Castro got nowhere in the Texas primary. He was polling in 7th. There is a half-Mexican American wannabe politician who calls herself Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez. Her real name is Cristina Costello as her father is Irish. She uses what may - or may not - be her mother's maiden name and adds on the name of her ex-husband Ramirez. She's been getting nowhere. But damn, she tries hard.

Lots of Latinos, like most Catholics, are hypocrites. I have a few Latinos in my extended family, my mind boggles when they talk about their 'values'. They are, of course, Republicans and total hypocrites.

Many Latinos claim to believe in 'family values', but, the men are always cheating on their wives, especially the young hot Hispanic men who are married to women, are closeted and on the down low. I've also noticed, many Hispanics claim to be opposed to welfare, food stamps etc, yet think nothing of working off the books and pulling other scams where they don't pay taxes.

The hypocrisy is glaring.

by Anonymousreply 137March 2, 2022 9:58 PM

That's not hypocrisy, R137. Think about it.

by Anonymousreply 138March 2, 2022 10:24 PM

R138, actually it can be hypocrisy. Because in some states it helps them to qualify for benefits.

by Anonymousreply 139March 2, 2022 10:27 PM
That's not hypocrisy, [R137]. Think about it.

Actually it is, because many people [bold]honestly DO need government assistance. Especially people who actually work. [/bold] Way too many Hispanics actually buy into the 'pulling one up by the bootstraps' bullshit, which doesn't work for many.

Many people are working at low paying jobs, some cannot afford to put decent healthy food on their tables or pay their outrageous rents. It was a joke when Dump went on about so many jobs being created during his Nazi Reign, he forgot to tell his fans, the jobs created were low paying McJobs.

Lots of peoples salaries are way too low to keep up with inflation. Yet, a certain segment of Hispanics and, of course, the GOP want to cut programs which actually help people.

The US has trillions for wars, tax cuts for rich people (many who don't even own companies!) and other bullshit, but it seems where the GOP is concerned, the US can't seem to help their own. The GOP deem the working poor as "lazy" etc, meanwhile those GOP ReThugs are getting free healthcare and other perks. Hypocrisy all around.

The GOP don't even have platform, only hate and opposition! What exactly have they done for their working class voters? Nothing.

How can Americans be so damn STUPID? By voting ReThug, especially now, they are always shooting themselves in the foot.

First off, Latina people don't like the word "Latinx", the Democrats, and anyone else calling them Latinx, can start there.

by Anonymousreply 142March 3, 2022 1:09 AM

Mexican-Americans in Texas (which is actually what they prefer to be called) are 39% of Texas' population and growing unlike Anglos or blacks. There is a significant Asian population - mainly Indian - in Texas which also tends to vote GOP.

Flipping the Latino population in Texas is the key to saving this fucking country. Beto O'Rourke scored big in the Rio Grande Valley unlike Biden who lost it to Trump. He may be the one to do it. Only problem is he is so much more socially progressive than Tejanos are.

by Anonymousreply 178March 8, 2022 7:41 PM

There's a lot of difference between Latino groups. Biden stupidly thought a Latino is a Latino. He named a rich Cuban Jew who grew up in Beverly Hills as head of Homeland Security and he proceeded to make an idiot of himself, with no idea of border politics or how to manipulate the narrative. Then Biden named a generic Latino as head of Health and Human Services despite the fact he had zero qualifications.

There is a certain paternalistic attitude prevalent in the NorthEast "progressive" Democrats who think twitter is real life. I would say Biden's biggest mistake so far has been his cabinet: he picked tokens as cabinet secretaries to make twitter happy: Token White Gay, Token Native American, Two Token Latinos, Token Blacks, Token Trans and a majority of rich Jews. Biden also favored Coastal Dems who are inevitably out of touch with the rest of the country.

Blacks have been reliable Democratic voters. A slight majority of Latinos have been but they aren't a slam dunk. The Democrats have to get their act together. Latinos are far too great a segment of the population to be treated as an afterthought.

by Anonymousreply 179March 8, 2022 7:56 PM

Most of you must be very young. You don't seem to know anything about history. Americans go back and forth constantly. Biden's presidency reminds me of Carter's presidency. He appeared weak and ineffective and so they voted for Reagan. Then Clinton came along and was a strong moderate so he got elected. Also, Whatever party wins the presidency, the mid-terms almost always go to the other party. Americans seem to want both parties in office. They don't like a one-party rule. Most Americans are moderate.

by Anonymousreply 194June 4, 2022 2:08 AM

R191, the history of America doesn't bear that out. The white category will be enlarged to include them as well. It's already happening.

by Anonymousreply 195June 4, 2022 2:11 AM

R195 that can’t be right. If that’s true, then you’re saying that everybody who is not black is included in the white category?

That makes no sense. Unless you are trying to claim that everyone who is not black is white. Is that what you’re saying ?

by Anonymousreply 196June 4, 2022 2:24 AM

The school shooting has blown the peopaganda operarion on the Latinos.

They will never vote Republican again.

by Anonymousreply 197June 4, 2022 2:25 AM

The progressives are patronizing and condescending. They think no one has a right to an opinion. people don't like them.

by Anonymousreply 198June 4, 2022 2:26 AM

R196, up until the 1920s the only people who were considered "white" were WASPs.

by Anonymousreply 199June 4, 2022 2:34 AM

They can "warn" all they want. If they vote conservative (as many of them already do), that's on them. And I won't want to hear about it when they live to regret voting for the wrong party.

Dems lost a Hispanic district yesterday that Biden won by 13 pts in 2020. Dems better wake up. They have a big problem with Hispanics. Dems do great with the MSNBC/Twitter left, but they have a big problem with male working class Americans white, black, and brown.
Dems lost a Hispanic district yesterday that Biden won by 13 pts in 2020

Republicans flipped a Democratic-friendly Texas Congressional seat with Mayra Flores beating Dan Sanchez

Flores will be first Mexican-born member of House and first Republican Latina from the state of Texas

Flores, a GOP organizer who is the daughter of migrant workers and a respiratory care practitioner, will hold the seat for several months before the district is 𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒚𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 to be more favorable to Democrats.

But her victory in the heavily Hispanic Rio Grand Valley is an ominous sign for Democrats - and demonstrates that Republicans are making inroads with Hispanic voters.

Flores had 51 percent of the vote compared to Sanchez's 43 percent when the Democrat conceded the race in a district where 85 percent of residents are Latino.

Her victory also has implications for Democrats' ambitions in Congress, denying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi an opportunity to add to her slim two-vote margin to pass legislation.

New Texas resident Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he had voted for Republican for the first time in order to vote for Flores.

He tweeted: 'I voted for Mayra Flores – first time I ever voted Republican. Massive red wave in 2022.'

R146, most humans the world over and throughout history have been/are religious to some degree.

by Anonymousreply 209June 15, 2022 11:04 AM

Religion is just fanatical belief. Your deity may be god, buddha, mohammed, trump, or biden.

by Anonymousreply 210June 15, 2022 11:12 AM

r209 I mean, that really says nothing about its benefit to society, just that most people subscribe to some tribalism. It also says nothing about the current trend of rapid secularisation in the developed world, or the future of religion. Germany just fell below 50% Christian a couple of months ago, for the first time since gods know which century.

Most people in the world are also homophobic. That doesn't make homophobia okay.

Let the latinos vote for us and once in office we will send them back to where they came from.

by Anonymousreply 217June 15, 2022 11:31 AM

So most latinos see themselves as white even though whites don't see them as white? What do you do with that? Doesn't that mean that you CAN identify as a different race (different than how others see you)? I know people say that latino is not a race, but huh? Most latinos are not white. They have beige skin without pink undertones. They have brown eyes. They tend to have softer features. If latinos can say they're white, then why can't blacks say they're white?

by Anonymousreply 218June 15, 2022 12:12 PM

They’re as white as lots of Mediterranean Europeans by your standard, r218.

The real distinction that will emerge is “Black” and “Not Black”.

by Anonymousreply 219June 15, 2022 12:24 PM

Identity politics doesn’t determine how everyone votes. That’s just the nonsense that woke elites push. There will be massive pushback to that including among the black population.

by Anonymousreply 220June 15, 2022 12:25 PM

People who complain about “identity politics” tend to be racists, sexists, and homophobic, and they dislike being exposed as such

by Anonymousreply 221June 15, 2022 12:32 PM

R219, you're right. I wonder what race I would consider myself if I were Mediterranean or Latino? Would I consider myself to be white? Or would I just not think about it?

by Anonymousreply 222June 15, 2022 12:33 PM

Race is a social construct loosely based on skin color. Human skin color varies in his because we all need vitamin d from the sun's rays but different latitudes allow different amounts of UV so humans adjusted their skin tones to match their geographic location. "race" is what we decided to attach to that natural phenomenon.

Also, most Latinos do NOT want to be referred to as “Latinx”, but liberals keep pushing it. I’m not saying it’s a Dem vs Rep issue, but it’s part of the problem. I don’t like being called “Cis”, as if the majority of humans are aberrant and need a special term.

Abbots dumping $2.8M into Hispanic voter contact in June/July. DEMs are weak there & GOP is mounting a serious aggressive offensive.

It’s a very smart strategy.

by Anonymousreply 243July 2, 2022 2:11 PM

Latinos should warn about the growing problem of having OPEN BORDERS with Latin America.

by Anonymousreply 244July 2, 2022 2:15 PM

Abbott's dumping ads every 5 minutes on TV is likely to backfire. His disrespect of the families in Uvalde and their hatred of him will also play a role. All these photo ops at the border: Abbott isn't playing to Texas. Texas knows he's full of shit. Abbott the cripple seriously thinks he can run for President just like Dubya and Perry did. He's even dumber than Perry.

In 2018, Abbott won reelection by 13 pts over an unknown Dem placeholder, a lesbian Latina. That's actually a pretty weak performance for an incumbent over a nonentity who had 0 money for her campaign, 0 name recognition and whose 'value' as a Latina was largely crushed by the fact she was a woman and a very vocal lesbian, hardly features that appeal to macho, socially conservative Latinos.

Since then, Abbott's gone off the deep end in his pursuit of Trump's approval In 2018, he appeared moderate in comparison to bomb-throwers Cruz, Paxton and Patrick. They all won re-election by the skin of their teeth. Since then, Abbott's veered off the rightwing of the political spectrum and been responsible for freezing Texans to death in February 2021.

Polls in Texas - maybe everywhere now - always skew right: people no longer respond to unknown phone numbers unless you're really old and really bored. But no poll taken over the past year has shown Abbott's support at 50%. An incumbent who is under water is an incumbent who's in trouble.

by Anonymousreply 245July 2, 2022 3:08 PM

So after reading this thread, the bottom line on this whole discussion is this: Latino voters have decided that running from the party (Dems) that takes them for granted — but whose policies would ultimately benefit them most — to the party that’s been openly racist towards them for years — and will gleefully cut their throats the minute they and their orange god get back into power — is a winning strategy for their people. Yes, I’m sure that will work out well for them and the country in the end.

R246, For the most part, people only care about themselves and their family

Latinos don't really give a shit at all about Latinos at the border. That's what the democrats need to understand.

I know what you are going to say. But I'm telling you what other people's perceptions are. Most people in America do not want lots of immigration. Right or wrong, that's how they feel. That's how they think. The republicans are able to zero in on that. It doesn't matter that their biggest donors depend on lots of illegal immigrants to work in the food industry. Republicans say one thing and do another

Most people don't read the newspaper or watch the news. They they their information from crazy people on the internet. The sooner the dumb democrats learn that the better off we'll all be.

While the world realizes it's 2022, the democrats still use the same handbook for politicking that they used in the 1970s. They cross their fingers and hope people will do the right thing or develop some common sense. That's never going to happen

by Anonymousreply 260July 3, 2022 10:44 PM

Democratic Saint Cesar Chavez very sensibly recognized his Farmworkers Union could never protect its workers as long as "wetbacks" could stroll across the border and steal their jobs. All the good woke people of the day made their sacrifice of solidarity by boycotting grapes and lettuce.

He criticized President Nixon and the Border Patrol for letting in so many "wets," as he called them.

Chavez believed that the campaign would help his supporters explain to the public why the boycott against grapes and lettuce wasn't effective: Farmers were hiring illegal workers who didn't care about the strikes or boycott.

A favorite line of Chavez's was, "If we can get the illegals out of California, we will win the strike overnight."

Under the campaign, he turned the UFW into an anti-illegal-immigrant spying organization. Union volunteers became dedicated to finding and identifying undocumented immigrants working on farms -- as well as those giving them aid and comfort. The information was turned over to the feds. While doing yoga "standing on his head," Pawel writes, Chavez gave 19-year-old Liza Hirsch the job of heading up the Illegals Campaign.

"Hirsch distributed forms printed in triplicate to all union offices and directed staff members to document the presence of illegal immigrants in the fields and report them to the INS," the books states.

Huerta supported the Illegals Campaign, but suggested Chavez should tone down the rhetoric. Some people find the terms "illegals" and "wetback" offensive, she reminded him.

"Chavez turned on Huerta angrily," the book says. "'No, a spade's a spade,' he said. 'You guys get these hang-ups. Goddamn it, how do we build a union? They're wets, you know. They're wets, and let's go after them."

Of course this is now swept under the rug but maybe Hispanic voters still recognize the issue.

by Anonymousreply 261July 3, 2022 10:59 PM

Chavez's issue was the illegals were competing for jobs with Mexican-Americans who were citizens and accepting low wages which was affecting what agricultural workers were trying to get.

by Anonymousreply 262July 4, 2022 2:40 AM

The lesson is that Hispanic citizens of the US are not the illegal immigration fans that some on the left enjoy infantilizing them as. Turns out most US citizens support their cops, their law enforcement. They support their military, they're important.
