Because that is the city's REAL name and because of Covid too.
Cancel The Peking Olympics

I'm sure your post will have a real effect on the games.

OP = Herbert Giles
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 18, 2022 2:09 PM |
Actually, OP, the city's "real" name is 北京 (or to be precise, 北京市). It is simply rendered differently in Pinyin and Wade–Giles.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 18, 2022 2:09 PM |
No, it's Peking in English, there are no scribbles in the English alphabet
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 18, 2022 8:52 PM |
There are no scribbles in Beijing either.

I am also sure the OP's insistence we call it "Peking" rather than "Beijing" will have a cascading worldwide effect!
Who are you, OP: Pat Nixon?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 19, 2022 12:28 AM |
Technically, "Peking" and "Beijing" have the same pronunciation. It's just for some weird reason, the creators of Pinyin decided that the "p" sound should be written with a "b" rather than a "p".
Broadly speaking, an American naively attempting to pronounce the Wade-Giles spelling is more likely to approximate the correct pronunciation than an American naively attempting to pronounce the Pinyin spelling.

“Beijing” is not an English word, R5. It’s Pinyin (to spell the sound) of the Chinese words 北 and 京, or “North Capital”. Though you sound a tad uncultured, so I’m sure this is of no interest to you.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 19, 2022 12:38 AM |
Sorry, that was for R4.

After the Peking Olympics we can swing through Siam on our way to Constantinople!

Who cares how some Americans mispronounce the name of the capital city of China.
Do you have an issue with how some Chinese might mispronounce “Washington DC”?

I like their duck.

The Chinese pronounce covid as 'today's lunch meat.'
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 19, 2022 12:46 AM |
Just cancel everything shithole China. Millions of people have died and hundreds of millions of people's lives have been ruined, just because the shithole Chinese government wanted to experiment on the coronavirus.
Fuck them, and fuck them hard.

Why is Pinyin so weird? Wang is pronounced Wong. So why not just write it as Wong. The name Huang trips people up. It’s pronounced Hwong. But some people don’t even correct the pronunciations so you have Vera WANG when her real name is pronounced Vera Wong.

Giving the Olympics to China is no different than allowing the Nazis to host ... after the war.

The name of the city literally translates to 'North Capital'
