Some of these are pretty good! Why don't the owners want to make some more cash on them?

Northern Exposure I'd the only one mentioned in the article that I would be curious ti watch again, or try to do.
I'm not a nostalgic person so a lot of old TV series that made an impression in their day don't hold up well. The humor, the style, the writing quality, and almost always it seems the timing fare poorly.
I liked Northern Exposure because it was about finding something in the often too quirky at first glance characters and the plot was just a transparent device to unfold these qualities and flaws of the characters. Each character was very much in his own or it - fitting, I suppose, for Alaska, and any connection or friction between characters only amplified the individuals, the plot was rather beside the point.

Brothers
Since I don't know if many DL denizens are even aware of the show, I'll add some detail: "When their youngest brother comes out as gay, two conservative men support him and help him navigate being openly gay in 1980s Philadelphia."
With Robert Walden, Paul Regina (RIP), Brandon Maggart, and Philip Charles MacKenzie.
You might remember Robert Walden from 'Lou Grant.' Very hunky at the time, as was Paul Regina. Maggart was the original gay bear and is the father of Fiona Apple. Philip Charles MacKenzie is straight but played a great flamer on the show.
Loved it at the time, and I remember it being the only TV show to feature two out characters. It may have been the first ever to feature ANY out gay character, but I'd have to research that.
I'd love to watch it again and see how it held up.

R31 there is a way to watch old movies and tv shoes that are filled with racism in resistant way, so as to appreciate the positive aspects of the production. I ordered bootleg DVDs of "Frank's Place" from a collector — it's the only place they exist. The music rights would have been staggering for a regular DVD release.
Yes, it's as good as they say but too far ahead of its time. One show could be broad comedy, the next dead serious. And a sitcom filmed like a movie with no laugh track was risky business in the 1980s. It likely would have thrived on premium cable a few years later.
The cast is uniformly outstanding. If you get a chance to watch, do so.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 18, 2022 2:42 AM |
"The Dead Dog Records" arc of the "Wiseguy" series has the same problem regarding music rights. The eight episodes of that Season 2 arc (arguably one of the best storylines of the series) were not included in the 2009 DVD set, because of the music.

The original series of "Mira Que TVO" from the Spanish station in the '90s. It was a prank show filmed in Miami and they constantly were having the hunkiest Hispanic men in the most compromising situations. There was one regular segment where they had a guy and his girlfriend switch swimsuits on the beach, so the guys were always in string bikinis. It was just the BEST show, even with my limited Spanish.

I'd also love to see Brothers again, r24, especially the original uncut Showtime episodes. I only ever saw the show when it ran in syndication on a local independent station in the early 1990s. I'm sure they had to cut some content since it was originally a cable show and probably also cut scenes to add commercials. It was an enjoyable show and the reruns were timely as I was just coming out when they were airing. They ran for about a year and then I never saw the show anywhere else again. When LOGO network first started I hoped they would air it.

Tales from the Crypt. HBO must not own the rights because this show was fairly popular (as far as '90s premium cable goes) and spawned two movies.
Linc's on Showtime with Pam Grier and Golden Brooks (Maya on Girlfriends) was a fun update of Frank's Place. Rude Awakening with Sherliyn Fenn premiered at around the same time, based on the messy alcoholic life of Claudia Lonow (Diana on Knots Landing). It was very hit or miss but Lynn Redgrave was funny and Jonathan Penner was hot. I'd really like to see Beggars & Choosers again, showbiz satire with daddy Tuc Watkins.

Also yes R22 Partners in Crime, which would have us believe Lynda as a photographer and Loni as a musician, and also that they could solve mysteries on the regular when in actuality the mystery of 2+2 would've probably been a challenge. It was two aging leading ladies in a Charlies Angels minus one format. And the mysteries were even dumber (don't forget Charlie's Angels almost always showed us the guilty party toward the top of the episode--it was a show about pursuit and collecting evidence, not solving whodunit type mysteries).
Carter is styled like a femme Linda Dano pretty much throughout. Eileen Heckart, who could out-act both ladies without even getting out of her chair, is the Bosley-esque older character. It's odd to see her in a scene with actors who can barely make you believe they're reading a newspaper or that someone is on the other end of the phone.

[quote] "Just the Ten of Us" is one I look for periodically and can never find. I got sick of waiting for "Sisters" to stream somewhere and purchased the Shout Factory DVDs
I bought the Sisters DVD sets back in 2016 because I had the feeling that it wasn't going to turn up on streaming. After I bought the DVDs, I had belongings in storage because I went to another state for a few months for a work project and I was also in the process of closing on a house. When I returned from my work trip, I got everything out of storage and moved into my house. I pretty much kept my DVD collection stored in the basement and forgot about Sisters and other TV show DVD sets that I had purchased, but hadn't watched. I finally watched the DVDs in summer of 2020 after my job had moved to remote status and I was home a lot because of the lockdowns. It was pretty fun to do a rewatch because there were some great performances on the show that I had forgotten about.
