Loved the first episode. Bridget Everett is fantastic. Anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider needs to watch.
SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE new HBO series

That song had me tearing up. I used to play it all the time in my 20s.

Welp. It's my favorite new show officially.
I loved the tone, the tenor, the humor, the melancholy, the acting, and the writing.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 17, 2022 7:42 AM |
Added to my list. Yes, I love Bridget Everett. Funny as shit but super raunchy. Thanks for the heads up. I had NO idea about this and I was looking at HBO Max last night. Man, there is SO MUCH stuff I want to watch. It's kinda overwhelming.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 17, 2022 9:16 AM |
It was great. I am not at all familiar with her but connected with the character within the first ten minutes.
It looks like HBOMax is only going to release one episode per week.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 17, 2022 5:06 PM |
It was lovely. Kind of what Tig Notaro's show was trying to do, but so much better.
Nice to see Bridget Everett playing a low-key character.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 17, 2022 7:42 PM |
Saw her close one of Amy Schumer’s shows—fucking hilarious. Yes, she’s super-raunchy, but there’s also something incredibly joyful about her performance.

I hope Bridget sings in every episode.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 18, 2022 12:30 AM |
The first episode lived up to my expectations. Love her!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 18, 2022 6:32 AM |
I loved this show. The scenes of her and her work friend chatting and laughing were very natural. Great acting.
(The brother-in-law screaming between floors, “Honey, I’m hungry, what should I eat!?” - also very realistic…)
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 18, 2022 6:26 PM |
Bridget Everett’s shows at Joe’s Pub are unbelievable - so much fun and just this side of totally out of control. She’s literally fearless.

I love Bridget Everett and Iove this show.

Great second episode. Loved Sam’s interaction with her neighbor.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 24, 2022 3:45 AM |
This is what WORK IN PROGRESS on Showtime tried to be, and failed miserably.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 24, 2022 3:48 AM |
The hot neighbor was a bit of a cliche, but I enjoyed the second episode.
Jeff Hiller deserves critical attention too…his character’s hurt reaction felt very genuine. I hope they continue to give him good material so they he’s not just playing the cheerful gay best friend.

Her acting is impressive but i have never, EVER liked her voice. Blech.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 24, 2022 4:36 AM |
She did a pilot for Amazon a few years back, it wasn't picked up.
I thought it was good. It's called "Love You More" and you can watch it on Prime Video - they used to release their pilots to subscribers, but no more. Just know there's only one episode.
I'm glad Bridget's found another vehicle. She's great.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 24, 2022 7:15 AM |
The scene with Holly’s girlfriend was great. Some people mourn for years while others move on faster. There’s no right or wrong. Very touching.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 29, 2022 11:07 PM |
It's just a fantastic show.
I wonder if it will pick up any awards momentum at some point? I can see it falling through the cracks otherwise.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 30, 2022 12:52 AM |
Can’t wait to watch. The New Yorker profile of her was great. I didn’t realize that Michael Patrick King had been trying to get her a show for years.

I LOVE this show. What's the story with her brother-in-law? Is he gay/bi?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 30, 2022 2:22 AM |
Another great episode! I wish they would expand each episode to 40 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 31, 2022 5:10 AM |
I like the show, but I’m not quite sure what it is.
Also, I disagree with you, R22. I’m tired of overly long TV shows, and appreciate programs that don’t require too much of an investment in time.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 31, 2022 5:55 AM |
LOVE her and LOOOOOOOVE this show.
And, it was hilarious how they dealt with the potential for the next door dude to become her love interest.
Snuffed that out REAL quick!
I hope they renew this and give them more episodes for Season 2.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 31, 2022 5:59 AM |
OH, and R23 I agree with you....30 minutes works fine for comedies. In fact, it's ideal.
For comedy movies, they need to 70 to 90 minutes or so. Longer seldom works.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 31, 2022 6:03 AM |
I am really enjoying this show.

R17 Fucking loved that show, wish it had been picked up.

Not only are Bridget and Jeff great but they’ve surrounded them with an excellent supporting cast. Special shout out to Murray Hill.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 31, 2022 1:51 PM |
Is Murray Hill a man or a woman?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 31, 2022 1:53 PM |
Murray Hill is a transgender man (born a woman...initially a part of the lesbian scene).
I like Bridget Everett and the show is enjoyable, but I find myself zoning out a lot and losing track of key plot points. Is it significant the BIL had a wad of cash hanging out his pocket? Is it being implied he's gay if he was at that caberet night or whatever it was? What did I miss with the neighbor? Someone said the idea of him being a love interest was snuffed out quick...how?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 31, 2022 2:01 PM |

I like the show but don’t think she’s that good of actress. She seems to smirk her way through some scence.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 31, 2022 5:29 PM |
I think her acting is superior to her singing which, frankly, is just not good enough to justify the constantly script haranguing “She’s a great singer! She’s a great singer!”

R30 So, a mental woman?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 31, 2022 6:38 PM |
Her acting is strong and she's a terrific musical performer with huge amounts of charisma.
If you don't like her acting or singing, go watch a different show.
Problem solved for ya!
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 31, 2022 8:16 PM |
It was really enjoyable and seems to balance being serious and funny very well. Not at all what I expected when I tuned in, but now I'm hooked. Congratulations to Bridgett Everett.

My favorite performance from Bridgett Everett...
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 31, 2022 8:41 PM |
absolutely love this show . had no idea Bridget sung so beautifully ..
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 31, 2022 9:05 PM |
Is she supposed to be a good singer in this? Her acting is kind of limited. Agree with the poster who said they don’t know what this is supposed to be. I don’t think it is exactly what it’s trying to be. Too often feels like typical Duplass Bros. bullshit. I like Jeff Hiller and some of the scenes work but a lot of them feel like scenes where actors have been given weak material so they just stare at each other intently.
Love Fred Rococo.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 31, 2022 10:05 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 4, 2022 1:20 AM |
She’s the “muthafucka” lady mixed with Trailer Trash Tammy and I agree with whoever can’t can’t go hear her sing! She’s a decent actress, though.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 4, 2022 1:39 AM |
*can’t stand to hear her sing
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 4, 2022 1:39 AM |
R48 I'm not familiar with the actor playing the friend, but when he was first introduced... I honestly thought he was going to be a previous classmate of hers who transitioned.

Bridget looks like a fat version of Laura Dern.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 4, 2022 10:55 AM |
R37 I guess for people in a small town, who meet secretly in a makeshift church in a mall, she's a great singer
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 4, 2022 12:14 PM |
Last night’s episode moved the plot involving Sam’s brother-in-law forward a couple of huge steps. Was he actually dealing drugs or is that his cover story for the affair?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 7, 2022 3:27 PM |
R54 he seemed relieved that Sam thought he was dealing drugs which isn’t nearly as bad as cheating on his wife with her best friend.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 7, 2022 8:58 PM |
So glad to see Bridget Everett finally getting the broader recognition she deserves.
Ain't about how fast I get there, ain't about what's waiting on the other side...it's the climb.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 7, 2022 11:16 PM |
I love the music between scenes. It's sort of a low brass instrument. Do you think it's a tuba? Or maybe a trombone?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 7, 2022 11:21 PM |
Neither. It’s emanating from Bridget’s vagine.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 8, 2022 3:31 AM |
I binged the first x4 eps. It's not bad, and there are several touching moments. Having grown up in a small town, many plot points resonate with me. (Especially when they were trying to pass the hay tractor.) I realize it's based loosely on Bridget's own life, but the alcoholic parent and drug-dealing in-laws and acquaintances have been done so much over the years. The church/gay social hour are much more interesting aspects to me.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 8, 2022 3:36 AM |
R13 I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I will anyway, there were some parts of Work in Progress that I actually thought were pretty good... but overall, it tried way too hard. I'm not surprised it was cancelled.
Anyway, Somebody Somewhere is pretty good, so far. R59 is right, some of the plot points are overdone. The church/gay social hour is something that should be explored a bit more. I also want to learn more about Sam and her life before moving back to Kansas (she did move BACK, right?). The best scene so far has been with Holly's girlfriend, really poignant: "Just buy the boat."
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 8, 2022 4:49 AM |
I think Sam lived in another part of Kansas for years, where she worked as a bartender.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 8, 2022 4:55 AM |
I think she moved from Manhattan to Lawrence to "get away" from her hometown and then back to Manhattan after her other sister died.
The irony is, not a huge difference between the two cities, both university towns other than the fact that Lawrence is closer to Kansas City and 'hipper' and more liberal than Manhattan.
For reference, when Hedwig in "Hedwig & the Angry Inch" comes to America, she ends up in a trailer outside Junction City, a shitty town by an army base and the next town away from Manhattan. And, Topeka, the home of Fred Phelps and the Westboro Church is right in the middle between Manhattan/Junction City and Lawrence.
It's a lot of fun!!!

Sweet show. Thanks for the tip.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 8, 2022 6:03 AM |
Based on the raves in this thread, I tried to watch, but several episodes in there's just nothing interesting there.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 10, 2022 5:21 AM |
R64 You left off the words "for me" at the end of your sentence.
Nothing wrong with having different take on something...it's all subjective. We don't all like the same things. Frankly, it would be weird if we did.
But, your tone is weirdly accusatory...like this thread and the fans of the show somehow led you up the garden path to force you to watch a show you didn't connect with.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 10, 2022 7:27 AM |
Sigh, R65. It's obviously just my opinion. If it makes you feel better, I think you're reading "tone" that isn't there. For me.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 10, 2022 7:33 AM |
R66 Well, that's one of the pitfalls of having anonymous discussions on the Internet...it's tough to convey tone. Or, rather, it's easy to misconstrue the tone/intent of other people's statements.

by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 15, 2022 10:03 AM |
I like the show ok. It is an endurance test when she sings however. She brays about as good as Sandy bernhard. Not a melody to be found and I’m shocked she’s done professional Singing.

The accidental pride window was funny.

I'm really loving this. Found Bridget when she did her first Amazon series that didn't get picked up and was so disappointed that it never went past that pilot episode. I love her singing even if she's not exactly Judy Garland. She has a passion for it that comes through every time and really gets into it. I'd prefer that over most of the bland pretty voices on all these reality competitions these days. At least she's got some soul.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 21, 2022 1:45 PM |
The rating might be abysmal, but it's a show that is slowly getting word of mouth and will start getting discovered after it ends, sort of like The Wire. We started watching it, having heard nothing at all about it, and loved it, and told others about it.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | March 2, 2022 2:32 PM |
I think without the parents and the farm, the show wouldn’t be as grounded in place, both physically and emotionally. The isolation of a farming community provides the limited infrastructure for Sam and her misfit friends to socialise, and even for her sister to rebuild her life.
Without the farm stuff, it may as well be set in a run down outer suburb.

I initially thought the mother was off to the barn to off herself, but then I decided, like R97, she was just off for a secret tipple.
Very glad the show has been renewed! (And kudos to the poster upthread who thought it reminded them of John Sayles's movies.) Will Sam's fentanyl-dealing neighbor return? Or the hot church lector? Will her sister have revenge sex with her business partner's chili-dog-loving husband? What's Sam going to do for work? (I hope she stays at her sister's store for a bit -- she's good at tchotchke retail.) And can I be invited to Fred Rococo's poker night in the tornado shelter?

I like the way they wrote the father out of the show. I expected the season to open with his death but they sent him off to finally find happiness and peace in his life. I love that. Such a nice tribute to Mike.

Bridget’s singing reminds me of Meryl’s.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | January 22, 2025 11:11 AM |
The second season teased a WHOLE LOT OF JUICY STUFF that ended up going nowhere. Yes, there were many funny scenes, and the episode about the sister's post-divorce STD was laugh-out-loud funny. But really? I think the writers thought there would be a third season and dangled a lot of story lines they thought they could tie up in season three. NOPE. The singing got tedious. The woman has a genuine decent voice, but just because you can doesn't mean you SHOULD. Shut the fuck up, already.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | January 22, 2025 11:35 AM |
Oh, and the once-clever interlude music -- I think it's mostly French horn? -- is really tedious, too. Just stop.
