I'm thinking people like the late Jerry Orbach, or Warhol.

How about the lady with the crazy long curled fingernails who used to sell socks on St. Mark’s Place?
Or the guy who would ride the R train and make a hellacious racket and yell “I am a space alien. Money makes me go away”
There used to be a guy who rode the 4 train who had no nose. Just a bandaid where a nose should be.

Sorry to turn this to microcosm, but I love the regular neighborhood characters, too, not just the famous ones.
There’s a woman in the East 80s who wears coordinated outfits in a sort of 1940s style. She’ll wear things like a leopard coat and ankle socks and old-style high heels and a leopard beret. Some days it’s plaid. I think her name is Janice. She’s got style.
There’s also an old guy who looks like Rod Stewart. He has dyed black hair and wears shit like shambled smoking jackets with pocket squares and velvet loafers without socks and he waved a cigarette around. A character.

Yes. She had several locations throughout the city. For awhile she was in front of Zabars and for several weeks also at Broadway and West 79th. And I saw her several times in the Village.
I once sat near her on a crosstown bus. She was talking very loudly to another woman. A man turned around to look at her and she screamed out, “You have no right to look at me.”
