Gwen Verdon doing If They Could See Me Now from Sweet Charity
This is one of the greatest things on YouTube. Gwen Verdon is brilliant, doing Bob Fosse's choreography tailored to exactly what she could do, and what her specialties were.
No one else moves like her. Look at that fluidity. And, her vulnerability in the part. Shirley MacLaine tried to get that across, but less successfully.
This dance takes you though fifty years of show biz. Vaudeville, burlesque, silent movies- and she really nails them all.

I thought that was Barrie Youngfellow, luminous star of It's A Living!

R2 Yes, it is very lucky this was recorded. It's like having a video of Merman doing Rose's Turn during the run of Gypsy.

She's great. This is the best part I've ever seen her do--it allows her to be comic (which is where her real gifts are) rather than mostly sexy, as in her numbers in "Damn Yankees."
She was such a Broadway star performer! Great dancing abilities, great comic abilities, great body, funny face, odd but enjoyable singing voice.

She's so funny/sexy. In the last bit with the cane, the way her hips move is amazing. Like buttah.

I love the way the dancing then looked sensual but also vulnerable and human... Maybe I am talking rubbish, but the body moves are more curved and it makes a difference- or how I see it. Is this a style of dance? Now I feel dance looks more brutal and rigid. There was both class and a grittyness in this performance... I'll just go back in the corner and stay quiet now, thank you for reading
