I read the book. He was raised in a rural area, and was very good at shooting as a kid, would be able to relate to the gun crowd well in a campaign. Also, he's not lazy; they arrived in DC during a time of limited opportunity.

It's possible he wasn't telling the truth in the book (which I doubt and wouldn't make sense), but despite the assertions here that he "latched onto" Pete, it was the other way around - Pete was smitten with him.
