I predict that this is the last Democratic president we'll see in our lifetimes. Congress will fall this year. This is American representative democracy's swan song. American fascism will take root in 2024. If you think I'm overreacting, bookmark this, then check back on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
The proposed Voting Rights bill is dead. Manchin & Sinema have killed it.

This has been obvious for months. I don't know why the administration and Democrats in Congress went through the pretense of holding out hope for the last year. I guess to convince the base that they were actually taking it seriously.
Manchin, Sinema and the Republicans will be vilified by history, but that's not going to improve our present.

They haven't been holding out hope over the last few months, it's been obvious this wouldn't pass as is, and I think this vote was just to get Sinema and Manchin on the record so they will have some repercussions to deal with.
The people who say the Democrats are in on this and have been faking it by "pretending it could pass when they knew it wouldn't" are conspiracy-minded goons.
Maybe Schumer's plan will work. It's not quite over yet.

She was so "adorable" when she gave her little curtsy with her thumb down-wearing her latest fashion purchase from Forever 21 Outlet. They are actively tanking Biden's agenda-and the US citizens.m. Sure they passed infrastructure-which will benefit many corporations. And, to a certain extent, states.
She and Manchin never had any intention to pass BBB or voting rights-they are owned byMoscow Mitch and Charles Koch and K Street-and they already got paid to sabotage their constituents and the President. They can't turn back nor do they want too. I don't believe either one intend to run again-at least not as Democrats. And yes R45 you nailed it-she lies about everything . Not true. Only four organizations out of dozens didn't show up.

One of the reasons I voted for Biden is because he claimed (a la LBJ) he knew the Senate so well he could work across the aisle and get shit done. And he can't. Why hasn't he been working with Murkowski, Romney, Toomey? And the left demonizing Manchin was counter-productive: he barely won in 2018 and is up for reelection in a state Trump won by 40 pts. FFS
Biden pushed infrastructure then BBB so all the BernieBros could please their isolated little dark blue districts. FFS
The only thing that matters is voting rights. This should have been his first priority. Nothing else is important compared to this. But Biden surrounds himself with a bunch of people from NY and LA who can't comprehend voting matters because Dems always get elected in their states. FFS

R87 in the follow-up to Sore Loser Trump's inability to admit he lost, all his minions throughout state legislatures (in 19 states) enacted voter suppression laws. Notably, laws to make it possible for the state legislature to overturn election results which don't favor the Republican. They're also trying to prevent minorities and college kids from voting because they don't vote Republican. There are laws allowing 'partisan pollwatchers' to harass people inside polling stations - no doubt while toting AK-47s.

R87: In the US, voting is dependent on which state you are in, and often which county. Like the layout of your ballot, how one gets on the ballot, it differs in all 50 states and the territories. There is no national standard for voting over here. We are the only developed democracy that doesn't have a national voting standard. This bill would finally fix that. But in order for the Senate to vote on the bill, they have to agree to end debate. You need 60 votes in the Senate to invoke cloture, which limits further debate to 30 hours and then a vote on the actual bill. There are not 60 votes to end debate and do that.
So, we need to change the rules to at the least eliminate that 60 vote threshold for this important legislation. We need 50 votes to do that but the bisexual Senator from Arizona went on the floor of the Senate to say she won't support doing that. And neither will the dumbass Senator from West Virginia. So there we are.
Think of it this way: the county you are in in the UK decides that since you didn't vote in the last council election, you're off the voter rolls and they don't tell they removed you. You go to vote at the next Parliamentary election and they tell you you're off the rolls and you had to be on 28 days before the election. Too bad, no vote for you, go home. That's the kind of shit states are doing now over here.

R92 in Texas the GOP (not the sharpest knives in the drawer) enacted a new law which requires people to provide both a Social Security number AND a Driver's License Number (it used to be either or) on the application to vote by mail. Now it has been legal in Texas for decades to vote by mail if you are disabled or over 65.
So far, half the mail-in applications submitted have been refused because applicants didn't put in both numbers. Now, who is it who wouldn't have a Driver's License in Texas? Elderly people who have let them lapse and disabled people who never had a DL to begin with. People over 65 are the GOP's base in Texas. And as disabled people won't be able to vote because they don't have a DL, I guess Greg Abbott won't be able to vote for himself.

Also too, everybody, while it's nice to imagine a magical LBJ sweeping in to make it all come true, LBJ had a Senate with 66 Democrats and 34 Republicans and a House that was also overwhelmingly Democratic when he took over. It makes a difference having a tie, with a couple of asshole flakes on the Democratic side.

Biden is in a tough situation with a 50/50 Senate. The blue wave never appeared in 2020,so,Dems,barely control the House and Senate. Blame the genius progressives who thought defund the police was a great slogan! That’ll be back in 2022 and should be a real winner with murders going through the roof in mist big urban centers.

R98 Young folks, back in the day the Democrats included a shitload of racist Southern Democrats. They only became Republicans after LBJ passed Civil Rights and Voting Rights. Nixon welcomed them into his Big Tent using his Southern Strategy.
LBJ's Democratic majority was made up of a lot of racist Southern Democrats who voted against the Civil Rights Bill. So he had to recruit Everett Dirksen and a shitload of GOP to pass it.
In the Senate, 46 Democrats voted for and 21 against; 27 Republicans voted for, and only 6 voted against the bill. That makes 69% of the Dems and 82% of the Republican senators voted to pass the law.

No we can't r107. No amount of demonizing the very few progressives in Congress makes up for the fact that the main problem is white panic. White people are still a majority of the country and a lot of us are going into an absolutely embarrassing and shrieking panic about the fact that black and brown people might outnumber us soon. That is what is making so many white people cling to even the most obvious frauds and crazies, as long as they are White, in congress.

by Anonymous | reply 116 | January 16, 2022 2:21 AM |
Lots of false info here. First, Manchin's family has been big in democratic circles for generations in West Virginia. He is a dem.
Second, Stacey Abrams is not going to tell Black women to stay home. If Trumpers took over the country, and that is highly likely if dems lose the House and Senate, the Black women will suffer most. Trump or his replacement will go back to dismantling the country, giving all the assets to the super rich. The bills passed on the Biden agenda, if they see the light of day, will go to funding grifters for phony projects. SCOTUS will have free reign to turn back the laws. And MAGAS will roam the country taking whatever they want, with impunity. Bad cops will continue to kill minorities and get away with it. So Stacey will not be telling Black women to stay home and not vote.
Show me anything about Sinema eyeing the WH. She comes off like a bimbo and, frankly, if she's been bought, she's very unsubtle about it. She has no good arguments for opposing filibuster reform and she understands clearly what current filibuster rules will do in terms of voting rights. It's like someone paid her to make that speech on the Senate floor this week, upstaging Biden. She has no chance to get anywhere in a presidential primary for either party. Oh, and which of those LGBT letters is she? I'd go for G--grifter.
Finally, no one mentions that worthless POS Schumer. Mitch McConnell has a caucus with crazies Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, plus a few other far out types. He has managed to do better in the minority than Schumer has with the majority. And he's pretty much kept the stench off himself, relatively speaking. I think if Amy Klobuchar were Majority Leader, both Manchin and Sinema would have been rounded up and managed by now. If dems lose the Senate I will blame Schumer. He insisted on being majority leader in a time of crisis, even though he doesn't have the persuasive power, the courage, or, frankly, the brains. Biden has his own branch of government to manage. With his party in the majority in the Senate, he should not have to worry about it as he cleans up Trump's mess and tries to navigate a worldwide pandemic, other international situations and keep federal agencies moving forward. Schumer needs to do the right thing, and, if he won't, the majority needs to take that leadership position away from him.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | January 16, 2022 2:24 AM |
I am not going to pretend Schumer is some great leader, but I will say McConnell has the much more easy job. The Republican Party is a combination of Trump Cult and Whores for the Rich. Rich Donors can order most Republican Senators to do whatever they want, no matter what they pretend to stand for, and honestly they don't stand for much other than being whores for the rich, so there is that. So in the end, they kind of are on the same page all the time, despite any pretense about libertarians versus evangelicals or any of that shit. And then there's Trump. They all know that in the end they answer to the Cult. They can squirm and scrounge and play make believe, but in the end, the Trumpista base keeps them all in line and facing in the same direction.
Schumer is dealing with a tougher situation. Most Democrats are interested in expanding government, doing something about climate change, but a couple of cuntish flakes named Manchin and Sinema are more interested in being noticed, being seen, playing some fucking game of their own, and there is not solid devotion to the rich or some cult to keep them in line when they go off on their crazy tangents.

Kyrsten Sinema is a highly paid circus animal, doing tricks and stunts that her corporate and private far-right donors pay her to do.
Sinema and Manchin are no mystery when you understand that, in their hearts, they have come to embrace the white supremacist's ideology. This has become abundantly clear given their current alliances in Congress and elsewhere. This ideology has become the overriding "to-the-death" goal of today's Republican party. Trump is viewed as the GOP's most efficient conduit to achieve this goal, but white supremacists (this term includes teachers, doctors, actors, police officers, politicians, grocery clerks, grandmothers, etc) have figured out the means of getting it done without Trump if/when it becomes necessary. The ideology is, of course, built on fear: fear of the groups of people that "whites" have marginalized and oppressed for centuries, fear of retaliation, fear of vengeance, fear of reprisal. Ridiculously unfounded fears. There is no national movement of a single minority group to hasten this change of balance, which has been developing naturally since the country's formation. What is certain, however, is that these attempts to destabilize our government will, in the end, have catastrophic consequences for all levels of society. I also believe that it's too late to stop this chain of events. The movement has grown far beyond the control of its architects.
Getting back to the focused topic, even more sinister is the list of companies and wealthy donors throwing money at Sinema (linked below), the same ones likely funding Manchin as well. This demonstrates that the push for the destabilization of our current form of government goes deeper than the superficial list of GOP political actors. Dark corporate money is funding this gargantuan effort. It is the Final Push. Whether this country resurfaces after 2024 as an autocracy, an oligarchy, or as a series of disbanded and disputed states is all that remains to be seen.
Sinema’s donors: Groupon, GAP, Carvana, Blackstone, SC Johnson, DirectTV, Slimfast, Intuit, Crypto Kings, Sheryl Sandberg, Snowflake Inc, Hyatt, Cleveland Browns, Apple, Disney, & more

R148 Arizona barely turned blue and could revert in the next election which is also why Sinema's playing this game. As for Manchin, Trump won West Virginia by 40 pts in 2020 so it's an absolute miracle there is even a blue dog Dem as a Senator. You can't expect too much. He's also fighting for his survival.

While it is frustrating to deal with problems in your own party just imagine the Senate with Mitch as the Majority Leader. Manchin being a Dem even in name only is a miracle. Biden should have sat down a year ago and figured out what Manchin and Sinema would vote for. Strip bloated BBB into digestible pieces that would be popular like Child Tax Credit and pass that. Instead they have a bloated whale no can adequately explain and it still won't pass. And all the partisans just seethe with hatred against two Dem Senators and just make Republicans stronger.

People need to come to terms with the reality that the 1% have already made a determination to transition our government into an outright, autocratic fascist regime. The narrative is being laid down in their corporate controlled media in order to smooth the way for it. Biden can try to deny it otherwise, but this is the plan. Unless the public has a mass awakening to this reality and resists it by any means necessary, then the US will turn into the fourth reich, not necessarily with Trump helming the fascist ship.

The Electoral College in the US is INSANE. Midterms are stupid constructs. Give the chose party a chance to govern. The US loves to be in continual election cycles. You're far too attached to "winners" and "losers."
You have no representation by population, which is the basic law of democracy. AND you vote for local representation SEPARATELY from your president - which is insane. Choose a side and a party. American politics rely far too much on personality. There are five better people who could have been the Democratic President. But Americans are petty and afraid about women and progressives.
Democrat Presidents proved to be weak leaders in the last 30 years. Even and especially Obama. The United States would not be where it is if Obama had done a few things differently. About the Supreme Court and most importantly about what he allowed before the election in 2016. He made no comment on Russian interference and allowed the lie of the Comey report to go unanswered. He was jokey about Trump - when the world was in real danger. Fascism does await your country. You're already in a virtual civil war. The art of the possible is dead. Only progressives or violent uprising can save your now.

R8 Stacey Abrams is a great Democratic leader, she has certainly shown the party that she wants to make a difference in her home state and she has and will continue to do!
However what we need now is a similar manifestation in the Midwest, the Mid Atlantic, and specially the rest of the deep South. We need more leaders like Ms. Abrams to come forward and deep down we have them in our capacity.
The Left is losing Worldwide, unfortunately so is humankind along the way, there is so little we know about the universe yet alone our planet, yet we continue fighting about irrelevant shit slung our way by a totally fuck up right wing party who has chosen to actively fight reality in almost every way possible ever since they lost the Nixon presidency half a century ago.

Stacy Abrams IS a great democratic leader. Whose career will never result in leadership. Wrong time and place for Stacy. She won't win as Governor. Again. Who is going to stump for her that is not currently hated? Biden, Harris, Obama and Hillary are poison names. Stacy will never get near the presidency. She's constitutionally qualified to deal with it all. It's not a nice guy competition. No black woman will be president in the next 20 years. Not even Michelle or Oprah could be elected NOW in the United States of fascist racial divide.

Please ease up on this fascism stuff. There are election laws that make it harder to vote. But it becomes harder for everyone to vote. If Dems won’t show up that’s on them. There are election laws that involve counting the votes. Those are dangerous and laws should be passed to make sure they are not unconstitutional. I think the Dems could even find some Republican votes to pass laws or that should at least try. Maybe not but it’s worth the effort.
Voting rights are not going to bring millions of people out to vote in 2022. Maybe the issue should be that important but it isn’t. Democrats must focus on things people actually care about. Once it was clear this would fail, I don’t understand the need to have another vote. Hopefully like BBB Dems will break the big bills down into pieces people can understand and get behind.

I agree. The problem though is that Democrats want to load up any bill with everything including the kitchen sink. We saw that with the reconciliation bill. They need to focus on one piece at a time. The voting bill could have been split into 10 or 20 smaller bills, and some would fail and some might have succeeded.

These threads are such a mess. Lots of trolling and disordered thinking and extreme, unwarranted violent thoughts, and hours upon hours of people working really hard to make you feel like you should give up, stop caring, unless of course you want to start a new civil war, THAT they think you should care about.
I think the people who claim to be Democrats who want to literally murder Manchin and Sinema are trolls wanting to make liberals look bad. They're probably the same people who say they want Nancy Pelosi dead, they just do it with different accounts.
Given how easy it is to fool the average DLer with trolling, and how so many DLers can't understand even basic, clearly written posts, I do get concerned that there are some here who will be affected by threads like these. But since there's only, what, maybe 100 real people here total, I can't imagine turning a couple of DLers into non-voters or rightwingers will actually accomplish anything.
Lotta energy being expended here for zero payoff.

by Anonymous | reply 222 | January 20, 2022 7:08 PM |
I think some of you are more turned on by the branding and the fight than the actual bill.
Part of the reason Sinema and Manchin are comfortable with being no votes on this is they know it’s just red meat. If Democrats actually spelled out what “voter suppression” measures are being passed, instead of making vague allusions to Jim Crow and poll taxes and trundling out every black politico they can find to be triggered by such rhetoric, there may be a bit more cohesion.
But you’re never going to make “show a valid state ID” sound like an evil scheme, not even to Black people. I’m fact, a black friend of mine — a Democrat btw — told me they think this whole issue is really about passing relaxed voter ID laws so more undocumented immigrants can vote. Unofficially. He said Black people are the most documented, carded, stopped and frisked people in the country. They’re not afraid to show an ID to vote. That’s one of the few times it actually makes sense.

by Anonymous | reply 264 | February 11, 2022 1:43 PM |
Here’s how conservatives have been suppressing black voters:
-Less polling places/closing polling places in black districts. Making it harder for poorer black people especially to travel further away. Not only that, but switching black voters’ designated polling places last minute. Long lines.
-Worse voting machines in black districts.
-Making it harder for black (and poor) people to get IDs. Bullshit DMV shenanigans and less DMV access for black people in these districts.
-Closing early voting - and especially Sunday voting - knowing black people came up in formation on these days.
The list goes on.
Boy has this forum changed. A few years ago everyone was discussing the bullshit taken against black people. Now these conservatives want to gaslight, obscure the truth and distract from reality.
Republicans have already admitted this is what they do. To deny it is fucked up and on the level of QAnon.

R264 That’s not an explanation of anything. Just insulting me and saying everybody knows the deal isn’t an argument.
R265 Let’s assume what you said wasn’t just propaganda and actually has some merit. Why not address those particular areas and those particular machines and those particular DMVs and the people in charge who could rectify these blatant inequalities? Why do we need federal legislation to address such granular issues?
And I notice liberals who just go along with whatever MSNBC says like to do this, but correlation isn’t causation. No, not even when it comes to race. Because the reality is if it’s difficult to vote in certain areas, it’s difficult for that area period. There are plenty of poor white areas and poor Hispanic areas as well. So why zero in on poor Black areas specifically?
I know why. It’s propaganda meant to justify a power grab. You’re making the most tenuous correlation possible to get buy in so nobody has to look like a racist. Because saying these issues, to whatever extent they exist, disproportionately affect black people is like saying high taxes are racist because they disproportionately affect white people. Which is of course stupid.
The only reason Democrats care about black people being disproportionately affected by anything is because that’s their bread and butter come election season. And if this is such a huge problem, well, it didn’t hurt Biden, did it?
R266 I guess that was supposed to be funny. But he made a lot of sense. Nobody’s denying the history of black people being disenfranchised in this country but spare me the exaggerated claims of voter suppression. At best these are small-fry issues that should be addressed locally or at the state level.

by Anonymous | reply 268 | February 11, 2022 3:07 PM |
Just the fact that republicans are so hell bent on making these changes-changes they say are meant to prevent voter fraud that simply doesn't exist-should tell you everything you want to know. They know their tactics keep way more democrats from voting, so they fabricate the voter fraud issue so they can put up these obstacles in those areas. It has been proposed that there be a maximum wait time at voter sites. For example, if polling place A is a three hour wait and polling place B is 15 min wait, voting machines are moved from B to A to even out wait time. Republicans are against this. They WANT long waits at certain polling places, and they'll fight tooth and nail to keep it that way. And guess which polling place is more democratic areasf?

[quote] Why not address those particular areas and those particular machines and those particular DMVs and the people in charge who could rectify these blatant inequalities? Why do we need federal legislation to address such granular issues?
Yes why have any federal laws. Why have a federal government. Red states should be able to make their own laws and discriminate against whomever they choose. Every state should be its own little nation. Problem solved.
[quote] Here’s how conservatives have been suppressing black voters:
Republicans are targeting Democratic voters. Which includes black voters. However, measures such as signature matching, cutting mail in voting, early voting, same day registration make it more difficult for everyone. Framing the issue as merely a "black issue" is wrongheaded.

Eldergay in Texas here. People over 65 in Texas have been able to vote by mail for a couple of decades.
Now, the extreme rightwing Texas GOP enacted a whole slew of voter suppression tactics. One of the groups most targeted are people who vote by mail. They made numerous changes in the rules governing voting by mail to make it much more complicated: new, poorly indicated changes from the old ballots by mail, you have to add in the number (either driver's license or SS number) you originally registered to vote with. Who is unlikely to notice the various, fiddly changes they've made to the mail-in ballots? Old people. Who is unlikely to remember what ID you originally used to register to vote? Old people.
Who is the GOP's base in Texas? People over 65.
D'oh!
by Anonymous | reply 272 | February 11, 2022 4:51 PM |
Don't forget voter roll purges. If you don't vote in 2 elections in a row, they cancel your registration and don't tell you. Then you go to vote and find out you're not registered and that the deadline was 28 days ago. They know damn well only bored old white people vote in odd-year elections in the spring for park boards, jock strap inspector and bathhouse superintendent. It's all bad, but this tactic is the worst of all in my book.
And to every troll pretending this isn't happening, may your every condom break, may every dick you suck be rancid, and may you take a diuretic and not be able to get your panties off.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | February 11, 2022 5:35 PM |
R268 I said it's propaganda because there's no proof that Republicans are simply picking out "black areas" or "black districts" and implementing all of these totally unjustified, unnecessary draconian policies to keep them from voting. It's propaganda because you're parroting the DNC party line: let's forward our agenda by calling Republicans racists. It's the same with any law or regulation; it has to be followed by everyone. If you can demonstrate that the law in its execution is only being applied to Black people, that's one thing. Saying a law or policy affects Black people more than it does others is bullshit. That's like saying speeding laws affect people who like to speed more than people who don't. That's such a basest, unintellectual way to process any law, but it works for low information voters like yourself, which is why Democrats continue to use that tactic.
R270 I don't care about your snide remark. That doesn't answer the question. Elections are manifestly run by local and state governments anyway. Yes it may be a federal issue if a law violates someone's civil rights, but trying to sell a power grab by saying "it's about protecting Black people's right to vote" is bogus. As long as the law is applied equally, there's no significant reason the federal government would need to get involved. You can have a conversation about why a law or policy shouldn't exist, but that's why it shouldn't apply to anybody, not just singling out one group of people who just so happen to vote en masse for Democrats.
R272 Mail-in voting and absentee ballots are not the same thing as far as voting laws are concerned. It's not voter suppression because we're limiting the number of votes being sent in by mail.

The goal of our democracy should be to get more eligible voters to vote. But that's not what's happening. If the rules are applied across the board and apply to everyone, fine. But they're not. Republican do target Democratic areas and make it harder for them to vote. They also make it harder for poor people to vote. Not everyone has a car, and Republicans manipulate rules that increase driving distances in Democratic areas. This isn't a "Black" issue. Republicans lose when there's high voter turnout. They know this so they manipulate rules to get a lower voter turnout.

In my state, majority democratic counties had up to three hours standing in line to vote. Republican-oriented precincts, the lines were shorter with more voting machines. The Republican dominated counties, voting was proficient. In heavily black rural areas, voting access site were spread-out, requiring significant driving, and showed as few as two or three sites for a whole county. Mail-in options should not be overly complicated, bureaucratic, and too limiting.

In Texas, the GOP has closed down 750 polling stations. If you live in rural, white, rightwing Texas you've got your polling station! If you live in Democratic cities, good luck finding your polling station. In 2018 when college students started atypically storming the polling stations to vote for Beto, the GOP Secy of State suddenly closed down polling stations at colleges. College students notoriously don't bother to vote in mid-terms so they caught the GOP unaware.
