What will be the consequences if we break up ? Should we sign a contact beforehand ? Please advise
Should I add my bf to my property’s title ?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 15, 2022 12:55 AM |
I wouldn’t unless you’ve been together at least 10 years but even then…
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 12, 2022 11:18 PM |
Consequences? Are you seriously that stupid?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 12, 2022 11:18 PM |
No!
Add your husband or domestic partner, but not your boyfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 12, 2022 11:19 PM |
Hell to the No.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 12, 2022 11:20 PM |
Never, ever...

Cheeses Christ O Mighty if you even bothered to google you would know this would be a huge mistake.
Stop wasting the time of the kind posters here, NOT being ironic.

You have no bf, nor property - based on the other 1000 stupid threads you've made up.

DON'T DO IT
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 12, 2022 11:27 PM |
Why would you be asking this on an anonymous message board? Pay a local lawyer $100 for advice.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 12, 2022 11:29 PM |
I have a feeling she’s going to do it anyway. OP, you have been warned, hon.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 12, 2022 11:30 PM |
Can I have your stuff instead?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 12, 2022 11:32 PM |
R3, should I register with him as common-law partners first ?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 12, 2022 11:32 PM |
Judge Judy hollers at couples who buy property together. Says they're just "playing house."
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 12, 2022 11:32 PM |
You didn't say why you want to do this OP. Because you want him to inherit the house if you die? There are better ways to do that than putting his name on the title. For example, putting the title to the house into a revocable trust, then spelling out your wishes who the house goes to in a notarized attachment. This attachment can be edited or shredded at any time without going through the process of re-titling the property. Putting someone else's name on the title limits your ability to get a home equity loan, selling your home, etc.

My ex is treating his significant other like a spouse in his Will. I told him he's just your current bf. If you love him then put a ring on it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 12, 2022 11:33 PM |
Yes. And not just that, but you should purchase a $5M double indemnity life insurance package, sign him as sole beneficiary, and then go on a cruise with him spending most of your time peering perilously over the railing...
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 12, 2022 11:35 PM |
IF you do add him, insist he sign a quit claim deed (to be filed at a later date if needed) at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 12, 2022 11:36 PM |
If you purchase property by yourself, NEVER add someone else’s name to the title, not even a spouse, unless they pay you half the value. And even then, I’d have fourth thoughts.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 12, 2022 11:40 PM |
Has he paid for part of it over a significant amount of tim…making payments, paying rent…that sort of thing? If the answer is yes, then absolutely.

The late Bishop Bullwinkle offers the best advice on this matter...

[quote]I wouldn’t unless you’ve been together at least 10 years but even then…
Yep. In another thread I said you should never buy property with someone unless you’re married or in a VERY long-term committed relationship, and there was some idiot who thought it was no big deal. I just thought good luck!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 12, 2022 11:55 PM |
No. Unless he is also on the note, there is absolutely no reason. You can make provisions in your will if you want to transfer the deed upon death, or put the property in trust - talk to your lawyer and be clear about your goals - exactly why you want him to have property rights. The minute you add him, you can't do anything with the property without his consent - not refi - sell - rent - nothing - and if he isn't living there, he can actually sue you for rent.

Paying rent does not constitute entitlement to an ownership interest. Absurd. (But if he paid rent and you didn’t declare it as income, you could have issues on several levels)
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 13, 2022 1:22 AM |
Definitely! You won’t regret it.

Your property taxes may increase
If you add any person who is not your spouse or your child to your title, your property taxes might increase. Under existing law, the tax assessor has the right to adjust the value of your property and increase your property taxes whenever there is a change in the ownership of your property. You could end up paying hundreds of dollars more in property taxes each year.
Do not sign a deed to your house unless you are willing to give up your property forever. If someone wants you to sign any paper and you are not absolutely sure what it is, don’t sign until an attorney has reviewed it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 13, 2022 1:37 AM |
R27 I'm not sure what you mean - but if you are on the deed to a home, but do not live there, you have a right to collect rent from those who do.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 13, 2022 10:52 PM |
Yes, OP. The cyanide, certainly.
Please.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 13, 2022 10:55 PM |
My bf just came into my room and shook his fist at me. It turned me on!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 13, 2022 11:07 PM |
OK, I’m confused. What’s the difference between a title and a deed? And if you have a mortgage on the house, does that make a difference on whether or not you have a title and/or deed?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 13, 2022 11:25 PM |
A 75-year-old neighbor thought she was doing something good for her son by adding his name to the deed. The town revoked her Senior Citizen tax benefit. No longer sole owner.

Should I add my bf to my property's tittie?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 13, 2022 11:43 PM |
NO.
As soon as he dies strangers will appear like cockroaches out of the woodwork demanding money.
I have seen it happen.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 13, 2022 11:46 PM |
R33, they’re the same thing, with or without a mortgage.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 13, 2022 11:49 PM |
r32 Your BF coming into your room and shaking his fist at you turned me on! I hope he gave you the rough edge of his tongue.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 14, 2022 6:18 AM |
If you're that dumb to do so, then you deserve the consequences.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 14, 2022 6:52 AM |
Better to leave it to him in a will, unless you think he will kill you for the house. Wills can be changed without his consent, titles can't.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 14, 2022 2:43 PM |
Yes, OP, by all means leave your imaginary BF your imaginary house. Problem solved.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 14, 2022 10:44 PM |
R29 That's a Calfornia Proposition 13 issue.
In any event, if there's a mortgage on the property, read it carefully first!
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 14, 2022 11:00 PM |
Absolutely not! Add me instead; you know where to reach me :)
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 14, 2022 11:00 PM |
It sounds like someone needs a palimony agreement!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 14, 2022 11:19 PM |
Adding his name to title may trigger a transfer tax.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 14, 2022 11:57 PM |
Unless you are an idiot. If your husband has lower income than you, a prenup is recommended
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 15, 2022 12:00 AM |
Slap his ass and tell him to get back in the bedroom
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 15, 2022 12:04 AM |
R20 , That was hilarious! You made my day. Thanks!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 15, 2022 12:19 AM |
Adding a boyfriend to a property title is right up there on the same level of stupidity as adding a boyfriend to all your bank accounts.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 15, 2022 12:21 AM |
NO NO NEVER !
