On Finding Her Roots, it turned out Maria's father who passed as a native American was in fact technically African American though very light-skinned with a lot of European (but no native) blood. Which is surprising as Maria did look black, much more so than somebody like Meghan Markle who is 50% black.

R11 according to Gates' DNA analysis, he was only 50% African and his wife, Ewing's mother, was white. Whereas Meghan Markle's mother is - I assume - 100% African descent and Meghan doesn't look black at all.
