Inspired by Dwayne Hickman's death I went back at looked at Dobie Gillis. Bob Denver who played the hapless Gilligan years late played the beatnik Maynard Krebs. He looks remarkably up-to-date hipster-like. I am likely to see this among young guys in New York today. Would you have done him back in 1950s? Maybe some of you really eldergays even had a fling with a Maynard Krebs type.

Dwayne Hickman died too? Awwww…. That show was so popular when it first aired, and in reruns for about a decade. Then it pretty much disappeared. I watched it when I was a little kid and thought Dobie, Maynard & Zelda were cool. I didn’t know realize they were losers. I thought all high school kids were cool.
Dobie was one of the first teen show starring 25 year olds. He was 30 when it ended and had gained weight (for those days) and was rarely on camera in later episodes. He was replaced by a cousin named Dunkie. Dunkie and Maynard did not make a good team. Maynard was one of tv’s first breakout characters and was definitely the first alternative lifestyle breakout.
One thing I wondered was why Maynard always wore white. Beatniks wore black. I think it’s b3cause Bob Denver was so skinny he would disappear on camera if he wore black.
Now Zelda is the only survivor. Damn, that show is over 60 years old.
