I was a nerd in HS. I'm just a much better looking nerd now than I was in HS.

Poll results make sense. Fatties are definitely at the most unpopular table in the cafeteria.... followed by the local loadies. There honestly wouldn't be enough jocks to fill a football team's roster, but 50% of the guys would dress like they were jocks. The geeks and band dweebs and the band dweeb geeks would dominate the school's caste system.

I was a crossover…nerdy/jock. I played tennis, and lacrosse, and ran track. But I was AP and in choir. It was confusing.

I was on the newspaper, did theatre and choir, made good grades in AP/honors classes, didn't rock the boat outside of being "alternative" by virtue of being gay (I wasn't exactly out, but everyone could see it from space), smoking pot on weekends, and being into old movies and music.

I didn't really have a clique, just a group of close friends. We got invited to parties, but we weren't the top of the social chain. The popular kids at my school were so fucking insufferable, my god. I went to HS on the North Shore in the early 2000s, and Mean Girls was not at all inaccurate about how some of these cunts behaved.

R7 - Yes, the same area depicted in John Hughes films and Ordinary People, if you want a (somewhat outdated) sample of the likes of people I was surrounded by. I fucked off to New York for college and have been there since. My family was middle class Jewish stock, but a lot of the students were/are downright wealthy. It blew my mind how some of my classmates went on international vacations MULTIPLE times a year and got a brand-new Rolls-Royce or Mercedes-Benz car for their 16th birthday.

r7 official club whores generally fall on the edge of the preps (overachiver but outside nerd caste; used to be preppy but relates to future prepared) and popular kids (they'd be special ed, if it weren't for x/y/z), even if they're largely background because their activities give them access to people and passage to events.

I was not a prep in the aesthetic sense at all, but overachiever on the fringes of popularity sounds about right. A couple of the popular kids were in my clubs or classes, and they were mostly nice, I think it's just that something about all of them together (girls and boys cliques) was unbearable.

I did have a huge crush on this one popular soccer player I was always chatting with in my English classes. We were on the newspaper together too. He was adorable, plus shockingly well read and loved old movies, especially Humphrey Bogart noir. He turned out to be at least bisexual (one of my friends I met post-college went to college with him) so I could ostensibly have had a chance back in the day. Sigh.
