If we’re going with Death Triads, he clearly belongs with Betty White; Sidney Poitier belongs with Peter Bogdonovovich; and Joan Didion belongs with bell hooks. So all 90s sitcom stars, film legends, and acclaimed non-fiction writers be careful unless they want to end up the #3.

Despite the sheriff's report, I'm still suspicious that drugs weren't somehow involved, even if there weren't any plainly visible in his hotel room. He had no history of health problems & had literally just performed a standup set barely 12 hours earlier. Nowadays 65 is *really* young to die from natural causes (assuming no undisclosed health conditions or anything).
Btw this was his last tweet.

R87 You’re thinking of John Stamos. Stamos said he’d have sex with them when they turned 18 on Howard Stern. Somehow this has got twisted around to Saget saying this. Saget always had fatherly affection towards the twins. Stamos’ behavior always gets unnoticed probably because he’s c-list on a good day.

Why do I suspect Lori Loughlin's PR team is already manically scheduling dozens of "very special appearances" to commemorate his passing on every major talk show (that will still have her, at least), and organizing a memorial with the Cameron Religious Freak, Jodie Sweetin, Dave Coulter and the Stamos? I was a child of the '80s, and even as a young gayling never watched the show because of the absurdity that they could possibly fit THAT many people into a modest-sized SF house (that just so happens to be one of the city's most iconic sights). I know it was called "Full House," but the only other '80s-era show that crammed an even more ridiculous number of people into a relatively small house was "Dallas," where a dozen Ewings lived in what was in real life a 4,000 sq ft McMansion barely five years old when the show premiered (but made to appear larger mainly through lame camera tricks).

I liked Saget and thought he was funny. He was an interesting character as well. I know I paid closer attention to him after he casually mentioned “letting an old guy blow (him) behind a dumpster” once when he was young and drunk one night after the bars closed. Not an unusual phenomenon IMHO. Despite this agitating the local fraus and Kinsey deniers, he still maintained he was a het, “just open minded.” I think the verbiage was from an interview in the MSM, or at least a gay media outlet. No, I don’t know the source, I have no link, and I will not search for the source/link. Do it yourself, gurrls, or alert your waitress. So, R7 and R30, spank that monkey tonight in his honor.

R147 it was believable. People really do cram family into their homes.
It was a 4 bedroom house. Originally each girl had her own room but Danny made Stephanie and DJ share so Jesse could move in to help him. Joey turned the basement into an apartment.
Later Jesse moved into the attic after renovating it, and Joey eventually took his old room. Jesse moved into Becky’s house after they married but eventually they both moved back in because of Michelle’s annoying ass.

I liked the show as a kid (though was more of a Boy Meets World/Sabrina gayling), but I'm hardly broken up about this. Ever since the Great Death Purge of 2016, it seems like any time a celebrity dies, you have to act like they were your idol.
Of semi-recent celebrities deaths, I can say I was truly saddened by Robin Williams and Carrie Fisher, especially as I had just skipped meeting Carrie on her last book tour. I'll be sad when Carol Burnett goes and when RL Stine goes (he started off my lifelong love of horror).
And I was sad about Anton Yelchin, but that's because he was so young and hot and his death was such a freak accident.

This is really fucking sad. Not a fan of Full House but I did watch it a lot as a kid (it was on all the time on 2000s cable). Terribly written and acted but very watchable. It was for kids. Really no different from 70s fluff like The Brady Bunch. John Stamos was hot which kept me watching. Anyway, Bob Saget's standup is so much different. Very raunchy and Jewish as opposed to his bland and wholesome gentile Danny Tanner character. Like night-and-day. I liked his Comedy Central Roast and he seemed like a nice guy. Sad loss.

Agree, R165. He was a part of my childhood, but this death doesn't get me as torn up as even some of the more recent ones. I was legitimately heartbroken (I know, MARY) over the deaths of Stephen Sondheim, Joan Didion, and Jean-Paul Belmondo in 2021, three of my favorite ever celebrities, if you can call them that. Betty White, Peter Bogdanovich, Sidney Poitier, Norm MacDonald, Jessica Walter, and Cloris Leachman also saddened me a great deal compared to Saget.

The problem is Bob Saget is a raunchy comedian who likes to push boundaries but he was unfortunately the lead of a family-oriented sitcom. The audience of Full House has a difficulty seeing him as distinct from that role he played. And Full House is a very simplistic show that stays clean with its humor and lacks a lot of imagination in its writing. So when Bob Saget says a politically incorrect shocking joke that is meant to not be taken seriously, the Full House fans do the polar opposite and take it literally. It's such self-righteous bullshit as if nobody says off-color jokes and put their foots in their mouths. So Bob made a pervy joke, people make jokes about eating shit and murder but doesn't mean they do it. Comedy is meant to provoke.

I listened to/watched his most recent podcast episode with BJ Novak and his speech was definitely slurred compared to earlier podcast episodes. You can find it on youtube. All was going well but suddenly Saget got extremely paranoid, demanding to know who she was, and then frantically ran away out of the restaurant and into the night (I think they were eating on the patio). She never saw him again nor got an explanation as to what the problem was.
Everyone describes him as "kind" now so maybe he got meds but I don't know, He sounded seriously weird to me.
Good grief! You're an adult now!
There's a clear divide on here between people who grew up watching Full House and people who didn't.
Some people had "Bill Cosby" as their "TV Dad." Some of us almost a decade later had "Danny Tanner" and his "clipboard of fun."
The show was on for 8 years and was in reruns in syndication for a decade.
You'll just have to take our word for it that the show had an impact, even if it was pure cheese, if only by the sheer virtue of it being around a long time.
R350, he sounded congested on Fuller House as well. He had been like that for a while but he wasn't like that when he was younger.
Some people had "Bill Cosby" as their "TV Dad." Some of us almost a decade later had "Danny Tanner" and his "clipboard of fun."
The rather considerable difference between the two was that "The Cosby Show" was legitimately groundbreaking for its time. In stark contrast to literally every previous sitcom featuring a Black cast – all of whom lived either in the ghetto or the projects, or formerly lived in the ghetto before moving into a deeeee-luxe apartment in the sky – "The Cosby Show" depicted an actual upper-middle-class Black family, and did so in a consistently well-written & realistic fashion.
If anything it's a pity that the show's legacy has been entirely destroyed – it quite literally no longer exists on the airwaves – by Cosby's serial rape horrors.
You'll just have to take our word for it that the show had an impact, even if it was pure cheese, if only by the sheer virtue of it being around a long time.
Do you think "Family Ties" had an impact? Or "Who's The Boss?" Or "The Facts of Life"? All three shared a commonality with "Full House": they were consistently mediocre shows that only managed to stay on the air so many seasons because '80s-era TV sucked so badly, especially in contrast to the myriad brilliant sitcoms from the '70s (e.g. "Maude" - the first, and still one of the only, network show to depict a woman having a voluntary abortion, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "All in the Family," and of course "Soap," the first show to have an openly gay regular character who wasn't depicted as "campy" or some sort of pervert).
I get that nostalgia twists one's memories, but "Full House" wasn't even in the same ballpark as the ACTUAL excellence in '90s-era sitcoms (e.g. "Frasier" along with the tail end of "Cheers," plus "Seinfeld" & "Friends," etc.). If anything it was the epitome of "meh."

They may have hated it, but it's the ONLY reason both managed to become insanely rich from launching various business ventures & clothing enterprises – decades before that became the norm among so many TV personalities, Jaclyn Smith & Martha Stewart excepted – and did *extremely* well in terms of their love lives, considering Mary-Kate married one of the most prominent (and wealthy) men in France.

He was the lead star on a long-running MTV show. I wouldn't call that "fucked up": the only reason he's fared poorly since then is because he can't act worth a fuck. (And no, getting a bunch of tattoos & launching a PG-13 OnlyFans channel doesn't count as fucked up, either.)

On a long and lonesome highway, East of Omaha
You can listen to the engine, Moanin' out his one note song
You can think about the woman, Or the girl you knew the night before
But your thoughts will soon be wandering...the way they always do
When you're ridin' sixteen hours, and there's nothin' much to do... And you don't feel much like ridin'...you just wish the trip was through
See here I am, On the road again
showbiz hotel room deaths tend to be more of a drug issue
I agree but the cops went out of their way to say there was no evidence of drug use involved, so I think they must have been pretty certain that wasn't the cause of death. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it was multiple drug toxicity or something along those lines, though you can't rule out cardiovascular issues or some kind of blood clot aftereffect of COVID.

The Olsen twins have no obligation to comment publicly. It is pretty pathetic of grown adults to get offended by this and also the fact they didn't return to Full House. First, they can't act and are very robotic and expressionless. They are filthy rich, so don't need to act anyway. Their parents forced them into acting. They were overworked since they were infants. And while it's true they would not be where they were without Full House, they came from a well-to-do family that lived in Sherman Oaks and probably would have been happier living a rich California childhood without the stress of fame.
They did remain on good terms with Bob as opposed to the rest of cast (and Hollywood) who they cut off. They are definitely grieving.
I loved those cheesy shows as a kid. But, as an adult they aren't watchable. Step by Step's only redeeming factor was that it wasn't frequently aired in syndication like Full House was.
For me. Sasha Mitchell and Patrick Duffy in Step by Step made it watchable. John Stamos and Scott Weinger in Full House. Laura's boys-of-the-week and shirtless Jaleel White in Family Matters. None of these shows were well-written and revisiting them as an adult they are embarrassing.
Boy Meets World and Sabrina aged so much better and also had hot guys.

I agree that Cosby was the much better show, but while I was growing up, Full House used to be shown in the afternoon, right after school let out. My guess is that wasn’t just in my area and it explains why a slice of the population is so familiar with it as compared to the other mediocre sitcoms of the day.

R355, went to the Twitter school of putting words in people's mouths so they can argue over nothing!
The rather considerable difference between the two was that "The Cosby Show" was legitimately groundbreaking for its time.
I never said the Cosby Show wasn't important, I did say some of us didn't grow up with it as our main form of entertainment. The last thing I remember about that show was when Raven-Symoné was on it and Cousin Pam came to live with them and I think I only remember that from reruns.
If anything it's a pity that the show's legacy has been entirely destroyed – it quite literally no longer exists on the airwaves – by Cosby's serial rape horrors.
I have a really good story about that, someone in my family worked with him for YEARS and they took the Phylicia Rashad route of responding to everything that happened, sadly.
Do you think "Family Ties" had an impact? Or "Who's The Boss?" Or "The Facts of Life"?
Don't remember the first one.
Do remember "Who's The Boss?" in reruns.
[bold]None of you have ever stopped talking about "The Facts of Life."[/bold] There are threads on it [bold]now[/bold] that are active! There's one every other week about Natalie or Tootie going to a Jackson concert or something. I know more about the show from people talking about it here! The same damn thing with The Golden Girls!
(e.g. "Maude" - the first, and still one of the only, network show to depict a woman having a voluntary abortion, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "All in the Family," and of course "Soap," the first show to have an openly gay regular character who wasn't depicted as "campy" or some sort of pervert.
I never saw any of these but as someone who has had to know an enormous amount of about television, you haven't said anything new to me.
Sorry to tell you this since it wasn't clear the first time, but instead of accepting that people were born after you and the idea that they may have seen the world differently because the world was quite honestly different when they were growing up, you're arguing that these shows were more important.
I didn't say they weren't.
I said that Full House, as people keep saying on here, held a significant place in the mental lexicons of a group of people that grew up at a certain time in history and that's why "Danny Tanner" was so important to them. Not that the show was good or that he was the greatest character ever created or that the show was historically impactful in the scheme of things but to this group, the show was ever present. You telling people how they should "FEEL" is so nonsensical. There's a place and time for facts and one for feelings.

Growing up as a poor black kid in the 90s, whenever I watched Full House, I often wished I had a father like Danny Tanner and lived in a beautiful house in San Francisco. The show and Bob Saget were part of our childhood to many of us millennials. His death does hit us hard. And that's not to mention many of us also watched America's Funniest Home Videos.
Sure, the show is cheesy as fuck when watching it now as an adult, but there's a reason why it lasted for eight seasons. It presented the American family as sweet and warm as apple pie, and while it's certainly a fantasy, many of us 90s kids wished we had a family similar to that on Full House.

Not every American is white and middle-class. And certainly most parents would not smile while their child talks back and acts like a brat nor would an attractive, educated woman marry a stupid fat slob who is incompetent at running a home. Sitcoms are not reality. I would say something like Everybody Hates Chris, Married with Children, Malcolm in the Middle, Grounded for Life, Family Maters and Roseanne felt closer to working and middle-class parenting though.
Growing Pains, The Cosby Show and Full House reflected Reagan era values of aspiration. They were more morality plays with educated, socially liberal (for the time) parents who happened to have well-behaved children who's rebellion is often blown out of proportion and the problem is solved by the end of the episode. The youngest child is always a cutesy little brat who is not funny and you want to slap them. Yeah, definitely a fantasy.

Even though I watched Full House as a kid. I never envied them. I have sisters and a big family and they can be annoying and the only thing I envied was getting near sexy Uncle Jesse. I'm black but grew up in a rural town and every white family I encountered was far more like The Connors and Bundys than like the Tanners or Bradys. Very few Black people were like The Huxtables either but many were like The Bankses from Fresh Prince (obviously not as rich), The Winslows from Family Matters and The Evans from Good Times.
I really envied Will from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air because he was this kid from the hood who got to live with his rich uncle and aunt who not only were classy but also taught him important values and he grew from a selfish jerk to a caring, dependable man. In general, it was a pretty well-written show and ended at the right time too. Also he had confidence and a killer body and looks which I wanted too.

by Anonymous | reply 515 | January 11, 2022 12:39 AM |
Mr. Feeny was a very good character. Now people are discussing how important is it for young boys to have male teachers they can look up to.
The Winslows felt more real to me than The Huxtables. Carl was cool. Even after all the times Steve pissed him off, he was still willing to give him a place to stay. Harriet was that no-nonsense mom but less stuck-up than Claire. They also addressed real racial issues. Carl was a cop and made a point to call out racism in the police field. Also, despite the wholesome image, Family Matters would remind you it was still Chicago with that school shooting episode.
by Anonymous | reply 516 | January 11, 2022 12:46 AM |
Yes, Family Matters rocked. Although I always felt like maybe Carl should have told Urkel off a little for making the daughter annoyed/uncomfortable.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | January 11, 2022 12:48 AM |
Yeah, Steve was annoying at times. I never liked the Steve-Laura endgame thing. He was a creepy stalker towards her. Laura had every right to reject him and tell him to go fuck himself. Myra was a better match for Steve (and imo way more hotter than Laura). Everyone who watched that show seems to agree Steve was an idiot for not appreciating Myra. I loved when they had Jaleel White do drag as Myrtle Mae Urkel and her thirst over Eddie. They should not have written out Aunt Rachel, loved her. It made no sense to keep Richie on the show without his mother.

Who cares if Cobsy was groundbreaking compared to Full House? Even as a nine-year-old I found Cliff and Claire Huxtable pompous and up their own asses. The smugness from Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad oozed off the screen, which was only reaffirmed when both tried to minimize his crimes. Saget made Danny Tanner likable and approachable. I would rather go to Danny than Cliff. And it's even creepier now knowing that Cliff was a gynaecologist on the show. Ugh. Cliff and Claire always knew better than their kids - who they often mocked thorughout the show. I hated them and their uppity behaviour. I liked Danny and Jesse and even Joey when he wasn't being obnoxious. I'd rather grow up in the motherless Full House than live with Cunt Claire telling Rudy what dress to wear.
Full House may have been "mediocre" or "meh" but it is a beloved show whether you like it or not. It's a show that glows with nostalgia. So much that Fuller House was a hit for a number of seasons. You can't deny its popularity - or its impact.

I was shocked at how they treated their kids. Cliff always was counting the days until they left the house and was out of his hair. I thought parents were supposed to love their kids and not want them to leave, not be salivating at kicking them out.

A Different World was better than The Cosby Show. It wasn't condescending and show the rich culture of HBCUs and many Black people with differing backgrounds and beliefs. It helped Debbie Allen took over. The first season which Cosby had control over was so bad it almost got the show cancelled with Lisa Bonet's non-acting self and miscast Marisa Tomei as the white best friend.

R521, neither instance is the correct response; for the majority of parents, their feelings are in the middle of those two extremes.
It is possible to love your kids very much and also look forward to having your house to yourself again; it's also possible to be an awful human being who never wants your kid to 'leave' you. Real life is more complicated than sitcoms.

All these “he was my Dad” MARYS! are pathetic. I was a child when Full House was on the air, in a poor and dysfunctional house hold, and I never saw him as “my dad”. I knew even then that even as far as sitcoms went, the show was lame and cheesy and totally unlike real life.

I never thought of Danny Tanner as a father figure, though. I mostly just watched because I liked Kimmy Gibbler.

R521, Cliff and Claire were generally good parents. They both wanted the kids out and were okay with them returning when they needed to like they nearly all did at some point. I only had a problem with the idea that they were NEVER wrong. Even once. That's just not how it works. The kids also never got away with a single thing. On Full House on the other hand, the kids got away with things occasionally and Danny openly admitted he was wrong on a few occasions.
Growing Pains, The Cosby Show and Full House reflected Reagan era values of aspiration.
Nah, Full House had much more in common with other 90s sitcoms than The Cosby Show or Growing Pains did. It wasn't meant to be realistic in the least. It rarely ever "got real." TGIF was programming for kids who had to stay at home on Friday nights because they were too young to go out with their friends and their parents.
It was "bridge" between Perfect Strangers (which wasn't that plausible) which lead to programming like Family Matters, Step by Step, Sister Sister and Dinosaurs. It all ended with Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Boy Meets World and Hangin' With Mr. Cooper were (if you could call it that) the most serious. The kids on TGIF shows were not as perfect, nor were they supposed to be, as the ones on Growing Pains, the Cosby Show or any 80s show.
Full House was a place where "The door is always open!" because their world was so perfect they never had to lock the front door and only their friends or people that would one day be their friends walked in. People enjoyed that.
Fuller House lasted for 5 seasons on Netflix of all platforms.

I loved TGIF and how the casts all took turns hosting it. But it was confusing because they’re in character yet watching their own show. “Stay tuned to watch Full House next where DJ shoplifts. I watched the pilot of the reboot out of morbid curiosity. It was blech and Saget looked like he just wanted to cash his check. Can't say I blame him.
It was fun seeing Stamos and the others try to pressure the Olsens (even Elizabeth) into doing the show. I'm sure there was plenty of jealousy when the twins took over the show and had an empire while Jodie fell into meth and Candace got murdered by Kevin Arnold in a lifetime movie.

R425 MK and Ashley did not come from a wealthy family... their family became wealthy when they became successful. Their dad filed for bankruptcy not too long ago too. His wife #2 is a total nutter.
And yes, they were close to Bob and Bob was the only FH castmember they kept in touch with, in large part because MK&A are good friends with a couple of Bob's daughters and basically grew up with them.

I know some people who grew up with them, but haven't asked questions because that'd be weird. I know Lizzie is still very close with her GBF growing up. They're kind of like that disgusting reality family, all the daughters are rich and successful and the one son exists.

Two of a Kind was the only decent Olsen twin project. It had some type of humor compared to their hundreds of formulaic direct to video movies. Their last sitcom, So Little Time was a generic teen sitcom with very lame jokes but the boys of the week were cute (as were the boys in their later teen oriented movies).

The thing I liked about the Huxtables was that they told their kids what was and wasn’t acceptable, enforced those rules with discipline, but still gave the kids a lot of freedom and space. They were the opposite of the helicopter parent approach. But if the kids fucked up there was no arguing their way out of punishment, as it should be.

The older they got the more obvious the twins didn't want to act. They were so wooden and their acting was robotic. They were windup dolls putting on the cutesy act even as teens. They just did all those movies for the money likely pressured by their parents. Once they hit 18, they got to cash that money and dipped out of acting to go to school. They did some acting projects once and off but both eventually walked away to focus on their fashion brand. New York Minute flopping also certainly proved they could never be taken seriously as Hollywood actresses. They see definitely very business savvy thanks to their father being a businessman who also wisely invested their earnings rather than steal it.

The Olsens were never that cute either. So many other child stars were much more adorable than them. Also it is really disturbing how in America everything is so commercial to the point two little girls become this walking capitalist brand. They were put on display and used to sell all this crap to make corporations rich. Nobody questioned this commercial exploitation? Granted they are rich as hell for it but it was child labor at the end of the day and the parents should be ashamed. Late stage capitalism at it's finest.

R573 They came from an upper middle class family living in Sherman Oaks. They didn't need to be exploited and working like adults for greedy corporations. You'd trade your mental health, sobriety and physical attractiveness for that much wealth? They seem mentally disturbed, empty inside, doped up and aged horribly. If you're rich already and grow up in California you'd be happy just enough without all that excess wealth. Being extremely wealthy is a bigger burden than people think.

She's a fundie but she's one of those homophobes that wants it both ways. She doesn't have a problem with gay people or she would have never allowed gay content on Fuller House. As for that "The View" Pintaro appearance, she and Raven-Symoné were clearly reading whatever the show told them to say to cover the show's ass. She did, however, support that bakery's "right" to refuse to make a cake for a gay couple. She's definitely not Kirk.
You can't go, "I love gay people! I have gay friends!" then go, "But I support anyone's right to hate you."
No different than how they were cyberbullied about declining Fuller House.
It was a mess. The twins claimed, at one point, they were never asked to do the show. And technically (initially) they weren't, by anyone actually involved with the show.
John Stamos, who was one of the driving forces behind it returning, at first, flat out said he never bothered to ask them directly. He went through their people. Rather, at no point, early on did he call them up and talk to them or pay them a visit to ask them.
Eventually he talked to Mary-Kate and she was possibly game to do it but only if Ashley wanted to do it. So Mary-Kate told him to talk to Ashley and he didn't.
I don't blame them for not even doing a cameo.
It also says a lot that Bob Saget, who they actually had a relationship with beyond the show, dared never bother the girls about it.

TV Guide, 1993
They have no concept of how famous they are or of how much money they've made. Their allowances range from $1 to $5 per week, depending on how well they do their chores. Still, Dave Olsen knows it's only a matter of time before they come to him with the big question. A few weeks ago, he tought that moment had arrived.
"Mary-Kate asked me if she had more money than I do," he said, recalling how his mind spun at the prospect of explaining to a 7-year-old about trust funds and development deals and how she was, in fact, much richer than her daddy ever would be. "And then I realized she was talking about the $45 in her piggy bank." But someday, Olsen knows, the question will be about more than the contents of a piggy bank. He has done his best to protect as much of the twins' money as he can, putting into trust funds (to be held until their 18th birthday) considerably more than the 25 percent required under California's Coogan Law, the satute enacted in 1939 after it was discovered that the parents of child star Jackie Coogan had stolen and squandered more than $4 million of his earnings.
The Olsens, according to attorney Thorne, have gone to extraordinary lengths to protect the twins' income and avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing. Besides the trust funds, they have also arranged for the hiring of outside attorneys who answer only to the girls' estate, not to the parents. They also hired professional business managers, nannies and welfare workers for the kids. Some of the most publicized abuses of childstar assets -case including Patty Duke, Jay North (who starred in Dennis the Menace on TV), and Gary Coleman- stemmed from parents who also acted as their children's managers and/or agents, paying themselves exorbitant fees and leaving little behind for the children.

The Olsen twins were mocked by many in the 90s and 2000s. A lot of off-color jokes about their saccharine movies and overexposure and later jokes made about their eating disorders and appearances. There was this creepy sexualization of them in their teen years like the countdown clock. We live in a more politically correct era now. John Stamos came across as a tool for pressuring the twins to return to Full House. And I imagine they do truly see Bob Saget as a father figure because they kept in contact with him over the years.

This site is exhausting. Nobody is arguing Full House is high art and nobody said Bob Saget was this great genius. The point is he was good guy who was in a TV show that was part of many peoples childhoods and still is syndicated today. Danny Tanner was the Mike Brady or Ward Cleaver type of character for the Millennial generation. And being shocked and upset about his death is not weird at all especially given how young he was and the environment. Many people weren't fans of Full House but still expressed sadness. I understand pointless bitchery. Like you can make fun of Full House and stuff. But it's pretty shitty to mock people for being sad over his death. Compared to many others in Hollywood, he had nothing bad said about him.
