There is nothing wrong with the "better safe than sorry" approach of people wearing a mask outdoors, too. Most of the safety measures are for the individual's benefit to feel safe and doing his part during a pandemic.

It's not about fear, but to give people tools to make them feel safe during a crisis. Cynics may call the safety protocols glorified pacifiers, but as a society and community we need to get down to basics of not letting fear, chaos, panic and uncertainty make things worse (which is totally what the right wing is doing since day one of the pandemic).

Do people still get sick despite vaccines and booster shots? Very likely. But as long as the media helps to point out that it hits the unvaccinated much more and much harder, it helps to understand that the risk of dying from COVID is much lower with vaccines than without.

Well. I think it's pretty clear that Covid wanted to "date her, or whatever."

COVID-19 is here to stay and it’ll be like the flu and most of us will eventually get it. Severity of illness is dependent upon factors such as strain of the virus, virulence/ pathogenicity, individual health status, and vaccination status just like the flu. This is what most ID specialists are thinking, based upon known facts and current projections.

COVID-19 virulence isn’t associated with high mortality and that’s the issue here. COVID-19 has a low case fatality rate (CFR) and mortality risk as compared to other, recent viruses such as SARS-CoV (10%) and Ebola (40-50%). We’ve gained better understanding of this novel virus, and the most current CFR is also the most reliable so far; we can’t compare scientific guesses at the start of pandemic to current knowledge.

Right now, CFR with Omicron figured into equation is around 0.2%. In other words, for every 1000 infected individuals, 2 will die from it. This is similar to that of the seasonal flu. It’s an overall rate and doesn’t account for age and health status of population groups. For instance the under-50 group will have significantly lower CFR than over-50 group, and those with existing health conditions/ risks such as obesity, comorbidities will have higher CFR as well.

This is where public health message should be better, so that Trumptards and antivaxxers of all political leanings, and anti-science doomsayers who want shutdowns, can get the message loud and clear. Message should be: COVID-19 is not a deadly virus if we all get vaccinated (those who can) and take recommended precautions. These are mitigating strategies with goals of limiting and preventing overcrowding of inpatient beds in hospitals, NOT because COVID-19 is so deadly and if you get it you’ll die.

The latter is partly what’s causing antivaxxers and Trumptards to not adhere to vaccines and mitigation recommendations. I guarantee you if COVID-19 is as virulent as Ebola or as contagious as measles (one of the most contagious viruses in existence), almost everyone would be vaccinated, including the aforementioned morons.

Can’t stand AOC but not wearing masks outdoors isn’t the problem here; masking outdoors is not mandated. I personally don’t mask outdoors unless it’s a situation where it’s a confined outdoors space shoulder-shoulder with a lot of people.
