Where do all those twink Broadway male ingenues go when the party’s over?

Covid, seemingly able to kill the burgeoning career of the sensational Issac Powell, got me to thinking about all the wonderfully talented young male singers - too many to name - though as I’m writing this, John Lloyd Young popped into my head, who got rave reviews in both hit shows and turkeys (think Carrie, Diana), but whose careers are DOA after their initial splash, because they are doused with FAIRY dust. And don’t give me Jonathan Groff as some Jackie Robinson cross-over. He’s about as convincing playing straight dudes, as Gore Vidal was when he tried to butch it up on film. What happens to them? Do they open antique stores? Ramp up their rent boy scores, or consign themselves to singing and dancing forever on cruise ships?

by Anonymousreply 69January 17, 2022 9:40 AM

How many edibles have you had today, OP? Sober up.

by Anonymousreply 1January 9, 2022 9:03 PM

Very often they use their Broadway credits to get gigs in regional theaters and CLOs where they can play roles they'd never have gotten in their Broadway prime. Someone, somewhere, is always doing Miss Saigon, Superstar, or Les Miz and searching for a cute tenor. If they can dance, too, then the world of regional theater is their oyster, with Oklahoma, Anything Goes and the like in constant revival.

After that they lend their vocal talents to any and every demo and concept album with even the slightest potential to make its way onto the stage (with the included fantasy of taking that role all the way to the Great White Way).

As looks and twinkdom fade they can morph into Only Fans or other soft/pseudo porn in hopes of finding a rich hubby to keep them in acting lessons. As they've always worked for a living, they play fair and put out for their sugar daddy (and sometimes his friends) and sing at parties.

It ain't pretty.

Isaac could go to Helix.

Groff is convincing as straight in that Netflix serial killer show.

by Anonymousreply 4January 9, 2022 10:07 PM

The musicians I know who never really hit it big went on to teach / run high school choirs or work on local theater productions, directing music. Maybe something similar here.

by Anonymousreply 5January 9, 2022 10:10 PM

They burn out and get other jobs. Bobby Steggert became a social worker.

by Anonymousreply 6January 9, 2022 10:10 PM

“Sensational” Isaac Powell?

by Anonymousreply 7January 9, 2022 10:19 PM

Like many former actors they get into real estate.

by Anonymousreply 8January 9, 2022 11:04 PM

I had a passing acquaintance with a dancer who would shoot daggers at anyone he viewed as beneath him in any way. A real cliched piece of work. Nasty.

He studied to become a psychologist. I have no idea how somebody that small chose therapist as a new career.

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2022 11:21 PM

OP, Isaac Cole Powell is very busy crossing over into movies and television. In fact, his unavailability to return to the Ivo Van Hove “West Side Story” (along with competing with the Spielberg remake) is a factor in the revival not reopening on Broadway. His Tony was about the only element in that revival that was getting good word of mouth in the initial 2020 previews.

Isaac is currently filming “Cat Person” and on TV has been in episodes of American Horror Story: Double Feature, And Just Like That… and Modern Love. Last year he filmed the Dear Evan Hansen movie.

He’s a very busy young man and that career is very ALIVE.

A high school friend (female) was a premiere soloist with the NYCB for more than twenty years, one of the last dancers to work with Balanchine. When she retired around 45 (old for a ballerina), she went back to college at Columbia (she’d been accepted at Radcliffe as a high school senior but deferred to dance and never ended up attending). She got her degree (and her children were teenagers) and became a high end real estate agent—many socialites were delighted to drop her name as their real estate agent. She was bright, extremely talented and disciplined, and a decent person—a rare combination.

by Anonymousreply 11January 10, 2022 1:21 AM

R9 brings up an interesting point. Musical theater actors are NASTY. They’re like the meanest group of girls at your high school on steroids. I work in behavioral health now and some of the worst narcissists and sociopaths I’ve met have been Broadway gays.

Surely that must carry through into their next careers, right? Do they learn humility? I can’t imagine most non-Showbiz industries will tolerate the dramatics and prima donna behavior.

by Anonymousreply 12January 10, 2022 1:36 AM

I once chatted one up on Scruff. He seemed alright online. But when we met in person, his mouth was stuffed too full of cock to really hold a conversation.

by Anonymousreply 13January 10, 2022 2:56 AM

FWIW, R12, I know a UK based actor. Modest success to others in the field, unknown to most audiences. But by working actor standards he's busy acting. The one thing he hates and avoids is musical theater. He'd rather not work than do that. Says everybody's toxic.

by Anonymousreply 14January 10, 2022 2:59 AM

R2 laid it out pretty succinctly.

The ballet dancer turned frau mommy real estate agent doesn’t seem like an example of a twink to me? But interesting all the same.

by Anonymousreply 15January 10, 2022 3:11 AM

A lot of aging dancers teach.

by Anonymousreply 16January 10, 2022 3:17 AM

Speaking of Broadway twinks, who is that delightful little chorus boy in the black tank-top and shorts dancing right next to La Jackman? Does he live in Hell's Kitchen?

by Anonymousreply 17January 10, 2022 5:07 AM

Bobby Steggert became a therapist, as someone above said.

Keith Nobbs went to law school. (Although he popped up on SVU this week, not sure what's going on there.)

Matt Cavenaugh gained weight, lost hair, and works in his family's car dealership.

by Anonymousreply 18January 10, 2022 5:15 AM

Anybody seen Seth Numrich?

Broadway/Off-Broadway really tried to make him happen for a while, and it really didn't.

by Anonymousreply 19January 10, 2022 5:17 AM

I was told they were sent to a nice farm upstate.

by Anonymousreply 20January 10, 2022 6:14 AM

OnlyFarms?

by Anonymousreply 21January 10, 2022 6:21 AM

Dear god Hugh Jackman is AWFUL in that clip. Broadway is really fucking dead if he is representative of male musical theater talent these days.

by Anonymousreply 22January 10, 2022 11:21 AM

The Broadway twinks I've known wanted to "Stay in the Business", they took jobs as stage hands or became dressers managing behind the scene costume changes.

by Anonymousreply 23January 10, 2022 11:41 AM

Real estate and massage therapy.

by Anonymousreply 24January 10, 2022 11:46 AM

Howard McGillan and Davis Gaines have to be the patron saints of this thread.

by Anonymousreply 25January 10, 2022 12:21 PM

I wouldn’t hire a broadeway rentboy. The potential for breaking out into song midway into sex is not a risk worth taking.

by Anonymousreply 26January 10, 2022 12:33 PM

Yes, many stay in the city and change careers. Broadway was their beard. Their excuse for going... getting out of whatever humble beginnings they came from.

Or move back home (it's nearest biggest city) to do local theatre scene. . . with more fanfare. as another suggested.

Others find graduated spots at theme parks and casino towns. Or the gay hell of Branson, MO.

Quite a few head into arts (drama/music/dance/art) therapy or management.

voice acting is a popular move as well as corporate videos and engagements.

There's also the festival and touring circuit. A wide variety of options in the arts and beyond. It can be an attractive option for many but it's the working class gig. You're surrounded by snot nosed interns and elderly queens. And you better have more than one skill to your name, if not able to do a bit of everything.

Does Robbie Fairchild still have his flower business? That was the career he pivoted to after the pandemic hit. He seemed to be happy with it and doing quite well.

Jonathan Groff by all accounts is having a great career.

by Anonymousreply 28January 10, 2022 1:05 PM

Robbie Fairchild still has his flower business and is doing well with is (opened another one in London in the fall). He is currently back on stage doing a tour of "American in Paris" in Australia.

by Anonymousreply 29January 10, 2022 1:10 PM

Robbie had to leave his beloved doggie behind as Australia wouldn't permit the dog to cross the borders, which seems insane.

Who's minding that doggie now?

[quote]Bobby Steggert became a therapist, as someone above said.

Just to be clear, I posted the reference to the dickhead dancer who trained for therapist. I didn't mean Bobby Steggert. Don't even know who that is. (Which for even an ex-performer may be a crueller thing to say than they were an asshole who would make a lousy therapist.)

by Anonymousreply 34January 10, 2022 3:49 PM

R5 I have a friend who was is les miz on broadway. He worked a lot as an actor director in regional, got his phd and became the head of the theater program in a very prestigious program. R8 A friend of the above friend worked a lot as an actor-commercials, day player on soaps, regional theater. He is today a very successful real estate agent.

by Anonymousreply 35January 10, 2022 3:59 PM

Both Howard McGillan and Davis Gaines played the Phantom, hundreds of performances. I think that counts as career success.

by Anonymousreply 36January 10, 2022 4:26 PM

Will Antonio Cipriano be blackballed for leaving Jagged early?

by Anonymousreply 37January 10, 2022 4:38 PM

There’s an aging-out graduation ceremony. Someone sings “Send in the clowns,” they get their diploma, and they graduate into a new career in real estate, porn, or teaching.

by Anonymousreply 38January 10, 2022 4:39 PM

Or all three.

by Anonymousreply 39January 10, 2022 4:41 PM

But eventually just real estate because when the porn career emerges they get fired from teaching and then they're too old for porn.

by Anonymousreply 40January 10, 2022 5:12 PM

R26 said, "I wouldn’t hire a broadeway rentboy. The potential for breaking out into song midway into sex is not a risk worth taking."

One of the last times I was in New York I did hire a Broadway rent boy -not intentionally, but he came via an escort service. He was gorgeous and we had a great time together. Afterward, we started to talk and it became painfully clear that while we had never met before, I was from his home town, we had seen each other perform, and had several close, mutual friends! In fact, I was currently in rehearsal for a play with his best friend. He was mortified, and worried that his reputation back home might get tarnished if it got out how he supplemented his performing income. I've kept his secret and never let on to his friend that I had slept with him.

It's hard to survive as a sometime-working actor in New York -I wouldn't look down on someone for doing sex work on the side in order to make the rent.

by Anonymousreply 41January 11, 2022 3:14 AM

Like anyone who fails to achieve their dreams they create a life that works for them. Or like Kay Hamilton in the 1937 production of Stage Door, they jump out windows.

Some work in regional or local theater doing a variety of jobs, and others find completely unrelated jobs or careers. One former actor I know became a lawyer. So many of us start out with dreams of glory before hitting the brick wall of reality. There are tons of talented people around without an equal number of parts available to give them all a break.

by Anonymousreply 42January 11, 2022 3:32 AM

We should just ask Wayman Wong, who keeps track.

by Anonymousreply 43January 11, 2022 3:39 AM

[quote] Where do all those twink Broadway male ingenues go when the party’s over?

Into a tiny house in Raul Esparza's back yard......

by Anonymousreply 46January 11, 2022 2:02 PM

Not one mention of Andrew Keenan- Bolger???

by Anonymousreply 47January 11, 2022 2:21 PM

So many become realtors, florists, antique dealers (at least in the past), nurses and medical techies, yoga instructors, and, of course, many many teachers. I applaud all of them who realized they were done and were able to move on with their lives in whatever profession made them happy and gave them some security. And bonus points for getting out of New York and finding a more affordable home.

by Anonymousreply 48January 11, 2022 2:29 PM

Must be a sad thing for many, to accept defeat. That dream is so personal, it must more than just a great disappointment.

[quote] And don’t give me Jonathan Groff as some Jackie Robinson cross-over. Whether or not you believe him passing as straight, he shouldn’t even be in a conversation about back-up plans. He has an excellent career and is making legitimate film money; if he ever wanted to commit to another Broadway run he could easily have a show built around him.

by Anonymousreply 59January 16, 2022 11:17 AM

R59, no. The economics of Broadway have changed. Nobody is going to build a show around Jonathan Groff. He is a recognizable name, but not a name that puts butts in theater seats.
