Dwayne Hickman (Dobie Gillis) is dead to me

87 was a good long life, but I'm still sad.

Oh, what a shame. I loved catching that show, I think I used to watch it on Nick at Nite.

by Anonymousreply 1January 9, 2022 5:25 PM

I watched it in when it first aired -- I was in Jr High. He was perfect in the part, as was the whole cast. My dad was in love with Thalia Menninger, who seemed older than her years.

I always found him cute.

His older brother Darryl who appeared in 1939's "Grapes of Wrath", "Leave her to Heaven" etc. is still with us.

One of the very last stars to appear in major pre-WII Hollywood films.

Th show had a partly-gay cast--Dobie's mother and Zelda Gilroy.

And I always suspected Chatsworth Osbourne Jr., but who knows?

Bob Denver, Tuesday Weld, Warren Beatty (and pre-politics) Sheila James Kuehl all got their start on Dobie Gillis. Unlike the others, Dwayne was so closely identified with the character that he had trouble finding other acting roles when the show ended.

I loved that show. I'd forgotten Warren Beatty and Tuesday Weld were on it. Let me try to remember their characters' names... Milton Armitage and Thalia Menninger...or not.

WORK!!!

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2022 6:59 PM

He died of complications from Parkinson's Disease. So many people in recent years have succumbed to that illness.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2022 7:20 PM

Has Zelda Gilroy commented?

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2022 7:41 PM

Sheila James Kuehl lost all credibility with Covid. She said she couldn't get any acting work because she was a lesbian so she went to college, got a degree and then got a law degree and then entered politics at the California state level.

She seemed decent enough, until Covid when she turned into one of those, "Do as I say, not as I do," Democrats, who imposed and supported Covid closures, masks and restrictions but then was photographed all over not practicing what she preached.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2022 7:49 PM

She was photographed once. She was in another series a year after Dobie Gillis ended and appeared on other shows. She wanted to finish college. She was not driven to be a star. R12 is an idiot.

I think Sheila James started her career as a little-sister type on the Stu Irwin show, or one of those domestic comedies.

She was billed as Jeri Lou James, or something like that.

"The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" is an American cultural landmark in television history.

Farewell to Dwayne Hickman

RIP

by Anonymousreply 15January 10, 2022 3:41 AM

Susan Dey is busy (or maybe not) this week.

Betty White, Bob Sagat, Joan Didion and now sadly, Dwayne Hickman

by Anonymousreply 16January 10, 2022 3:43 AM

Love, love, love Dobie Gillis

by Anonymousreply 17January 10, 2022 3:43 AM

Don't forget Sidney Poitier and Peter Bogdanovich... can't keep up.

You can find interview after interview on YouTube where she bitches about not being able to get roles because of her being a lesbian.

And she's a big fat hippo-crit.. She votes for a law but says it doesn't apply to her, like other Democrats do. And even some Republicans like your gay boy from Illinois.

Unless he is the last, that is a pointless statement. It's like being the second guy on the moon. Who the fuck cares?
