Sidney Poitier was a great actor, but he was also a humorless narcissist

Sorry to go against the grain but the gushing worship over this man is bizarre and done primarily because he was a first for African American actors. But he wasn’t the only. For someone who framed himself as a sort of civil rights icon, all Poitier did was talk about race and how awesome he was. He rarely had anything good or positive to say about people other than himself or perhaps other black people. I’m 51 and grew up with him. My mom loved him but he was still, with all his fame and adoration, a buzzkill, a narcissist and a sour puss. Nobody loved Sidney Poitier more than Sidney Poitier. Not even Oprah.

Hmmm, gurl you skating on thin ice saying things like this

by Anonymousreply 2January 9, 2022 3:04 PM

[quote]but he was also a humorless narcissist

You just described 75% of Hollywood, dear.

Not sure why you’re singling him out.

Klan Granny thread

by Anonymousreply 4January 9, 2022 3:05 PM

Another homophobic narcissist that's seriously a slow low IQ cunt, is a guy with the YouTube channel Red Pill Vegan.

by Anonymousreply 5January 9, 2022 3:08 PM

OP can’t imagine, and wouldn’t have been able to survive, what it felt like to Poitier to be an extraordinary talent trapped in the caste system that was Jim Crow America, and then when he managed to break that ceiling, to bear the hopes and dreams of a lot of other people on his shoulders as he tried never to misstep and give a bad impression as “the first.”

by Anonymousreply 6January 9, 2022 3:08 PM

R6 is a dumb cunt.

by Anonymousreply 7January 9, 2022 3:09 PM

Such disrespect, call him "Mr. Tibbs."

by Anonymousreply 8January 9, 2022 3:10 PM

R1, R5 and R7–you’re the same individual poster who also called Mary J Blige a ‘baboon bitch’. I see you for exactly who you are. Take off that klan sheet and go for a walk.

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2022 3:19 PM

R9 she is a baboon bitch.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2022 3:22 PM

OP seems pretty self-involved him/herself. It doesn't take a genius to see why Sidney is so revered.

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2022 3:22 PM

R11 Sidney is a cunt. Thankfully a dead cunt now.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2022 3:23 PM

Maya Angelou was my real mother and Sidney Poitier was my real father.

by Anonymousreply 13January 9, 2022 3:24 PM

The Oprah/Montecito reference gives away that this really is a Klan Granny.

by Anonymousreply 14January 9, 2022 3:27 PM

I don't get the joke, OP.

by Anonymousreply 15January 9, 2022 3:32 PM

You make all these pronouncements about his character and supposed narcissism but provide zero examples of said behavior therefore I will continue to like him and his movies. May he Rest In Peace.

by Anonymousreply 16January 9, 2022 3:33 PM

Anyone else wonder why threads about a certain weather caster get deleted ASAP but someone can call black people "baboons" incessantly for over a year and never get a ban?

by Anonymousreply 17January 9, 2022 3:35 PM

In the early 1960s, Belafonte persuaded Poitier to drive to the South with $70,000 to give to the Freedom Summer volunteers. The experience changed Poitier's life as the two actors were chased by Klansmen who fired guns at them, The New York Times reported.

The two also helped organize the landmark March on Washington in 1963, which featured Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

A year before King's assassination, the civil-rights icon said of Poitier: "He is a man of great depth, a man of great social concern, a man who is dedicated to human rights and freedom. Here is a man who, in the words we so often hear now, is a soul brother."

Later in his life, Poitier turned to humanitarian efforts, specifically in the Bahamas, where he grew up before moving to Miami at 15.

He was the Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007. And from 2002 to 2007, he was the ambassador of the Bahamas to UNESCO.

What have you done, OP?

by Anonymousreply 18January 9, 2022 3:36 PM

Now come on R18, OP has likely authored numerous threads about how Meghan Markle is destroying the royal family, that takes a lot of work when you’re an old Frau!

I've met him. Not a narcissist. Gracious, intelligent, and curious about others. Go pick on some other dead person, OP.

by Anonymousreply 21January 9, 2022 3:41 PM

He was the very definition of elegance and class.

by Anonymousreply 22January 9, 2022 3:46 PM

Diahann Carroll said as much in her autobiography.

I mentioned something similar in his death announcement. He was so humorless...and haughty. I know it invites the accusation of calling him uppity, but there are plenty of classy black actors who show(ed) humility and humor...Diahann Carroll, Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Lena Horne...

by Anonymousreply 24January 9, 2022 3:51 PM

R24, we wouldn’t black people to be “uppity“. They should keep their heads down and serve their white masters, right. Right?

by Anonymousreply 25January 9, 2022 3:56 PM

Poitier was an enjoyable, if mannered, actor who parlayed his unique position into a curious combination of visibility and arrogance.

The latter was, indeed, typical of his career choice, his fame and, apparently, his nature. And he wasn't always a nice guy about women, if stories long told are even partly true. I expect he matured and changed over time.

I never looked to him for humor. I being interesting.

What a pleasure to see OP and her many posts in this thread exposed and greyed out as a troll.
