Michael Jackson blatantly stole Bob Fosse's dance moves

He copied it even to the white socks. Why no one ever called Jacko out on his theft?!

It's also a "coincidence" it's a scene with an old man being alone with a little, cute blonde boy doing weird suggestive, dance moves.

is that why the King of pop named his son Prince?

by Anonymousreply 1January 9, 2022 1:43 AM

Video time stamps or it’s not true.

by Anonymousreply 2January 9, 2022 1:48 AM

And Beyonce was inspired by Fosse too, OP, but so what? That's how things in the artistic world work.

by Anonymousreply 3January 9, 2022 1:50 AM

Inspiration is appropriation!

by Anonymousreply 4January 9, 2022 1:52 AM

wish we had tags to show how old the person writing comments or responding is...Let's assume there was no theft that would have allowed the Fosse estate to consider suing for $

Look at what OP did. They took a video from Youtube, shared the idea that Michael Jackson stole these moves, and we can watch 10 seconds and pretty much all of us will agree. Some will retweet this, share it with friends, and everyone on who participates on this thread for years can share their thoughts.

Michael Jackson stole the routine in an era where it was impossible to weigh in on this stuff. I'm sure some critic or film fan somewhere remembered this. Did that person have a column in the local newspaper? If they did, they'd have to track down the film which may not have even been ever released in the U.S. on VHS. Even if at some point it had been, what are the chances a single video store in that person's city carried a copy? Not too likely. This was a French movie. Many video stores would literally carry less than 50 foreign movies in total, if any, and that includes classics and the movies that won Oscars for best foreign film that year. Videostores were not libraries. Let's say the critic was able to locate a tape (unlikely). They could confirm it, write an article, and it would be written about using only words. There probably wouldn't be a mechanism for that critic to even get a photo of it for their newspaper and have the quality high enough to print in black and white. Even if that happened, then what? The article gets printed and thrown out with people's breakfasts. Different era. Artistic Stealing was far more common.

Many writers of the 70s would just blatantly rip off foreign movies. Some writers in Hollywood would sell the same scripts over and over in different decades. Just a totally different era of information sharing.

[quote]white socks

Those are spats, OP.

by Anonymousreply 7January 9, 2022 2:01 AM

Jackson all along credited his moves to Fosse. Sure a lot of it blatant rip off but Bob was alive when Jackson was at his peak. People have been talking about it for decades.

Even Jacko's iconic dance moves are sham.

The world gave and continue to give this creepy pedo a pass for everything.

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2022 2:04 AM

Michael Jackson took from Cab Calloway, James Brown, Fred Astaire and others. Anyone with knowledge of music and dance history could see this. All these mainstream acts took from lesser known acts. Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Elvis, etc etc. Tale as old as time.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2022 2:06 AM

The older man young boy part being exciting to MJ creeps me out more than the appropriation aspect.

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2022 2:08 AM

[quote]This was a French movie.

It was directed by Stanley Donen and the songs are by Lerner and Loewe. Not a French movie.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2022 2:10 AM

The Birdcage stole from Fosse, Martha Graham, and Twyla Tharp! Quel scandale!

by Anonymousreply 13January 9, 2022 2:15 AM

Jackson talked about his love of Fosse and Astaire. You see homages to Astaire in the "Smooth Criminal" video.

This is a non-story.

by Anonymousreply 14January 9, 2022 2:27 AM

Seeing Bob Fosse do the “Moonwalk” long before Michael Jackson ever did it in performance is both fascinating and disgusting.

Did Michael Jackson ever pay one moment of tribute to Bob Fosse for “choreographing his career?”

Here’s the timeline that proves the thievery:

“The Little Prince” was released in 1974. Michael Jackson was 16 years old.

Nine years later, in 1983, Michael Jackson releases “Billie Jean” and we get the snapping foot and the Moonwalk and all the other symbolistic moves invented by Fosse. Michael Jackson was 25 years old.

The timeline is on Bob Fosse’s side. He came first. He invented the moves and the style that Michael Jackson would later directly steal and employ in his own act, pretending it was his own invention by deception by non-inclusion.

It’s pretty astounding that Bob Fosse, an “Old Man White Dancer,” actually invented the iconic, career-making, youthful, dances for Beyonce and Michael Jackson — decades after his death — and Fosse’s “White Man Moves” made them cultural, Black, superstars.

People here think every piece of art or fiction just comes magically appears out of thin air. Plus most creations are from a group process or take years to form. It's always been an issue, people taking credit and pretending they invented something. Many celebrities are arrogant fame whores. That's why lawsuits happen and copyright laws have gotten stricter (though they get abused far more by corporations at the expense of smaller creators who can't afford lawyers).

by Anonymousreply 16January 9, 2022 2:47 AM

Jackson was also taught a load of popping by Bruno ‘Pop n taco ‘ Falcon, who is featured in the first ‘ Breakdance’ movie. Falcon toured with him and contributed to choreography. Jackson was a star. They appropriate and never give credit. That’s showbiz.

OMG what a great find OP

"Michael Jackson blatantly stole Bob Fosse's dance moves"

Nope.

That may have been the gayest thing ever. Yes it influenced MJ but MJ changed it up. And that is not backsliding/moonwalking in that video. It's more like a precursor.

by Anonymousreply 20January 9, 2022 3:52 AM

The video is incredibly creepy. That blond little boy alone with a scary older man playing a "snake", beguiling him with weird moves. It's a sinister forecast of Michael's future.

I’m shocked a child molester would steal

by Anonymousreply 22August 30, 2023 2:28 PM

And Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me, straight out racist simple and plain, motherfuck him and John Wayne!

Oh, wait. We can already tell.

by Anonymousreply 24August 30, 2023 2:41 PM

Bob Fosse's high thin voice always surprises me.

by Anonymousreply 25August 30, 2023 2:42 PM

Troll thread.

Fred Astaire, Bill Bailey, Cab Calloway, and many others did it long before Fosse.

He also stole Fosse's skin color.

by Anonymousreply 27August 30, 2023 2:46 PM

It's called an homage, OP.

Sure, Jackson's private life was a mess if not actionable, but professionally, he was not a thief. He openly acknowledged those who came before him.

James Brown and Fred Astaire praised Jackson for his dancing skills.

"In June 1983, Michael Jackson invited Fosse to lunch, gushed about how much Fosse’s choreography had inspired him, and asked him to direct the music video for “Thriller.” Fosse declined."

by Anonymousreply 29August 30, 2023 2:56 PM

^ Do we know why Fosse said no to it? Fosse is such a pleasure to watch dance.

by Anonymousreply 30August 30, 2023 5:49 PM

And I love Fosse's body - effortless dancing.

by Anonymousreply 31August 30, 2023 6:03 PM

How old is the OP and the rest of you commenting? The movie is The Little Prince. How the fuck don't you dumb faggots know The Little Prince? WTF?!

by Anonymousreply 32August 30, 2023 6:15 PM

Oh orderlies, I think our lost patient has been found at r32. Please bring the straitjacket.

by Anonymousreply 33August 30, 2023 6:17 PM

From "Fosse" by Sam Wasson:

"He [Jackson] wants me to do Thriller as a music video. But he's just too weird. Don't you think?" ... Fosse would turn Thriller down, but Jackson kept the door open and they stayed in sporadic communication.

by Anonymousreply 34August 30, 2023 6:22 PM

Can we just all agree to save this thread for significant reference the next time some racist anti-white bitch starts going on about white people “appropriating” black culture?

Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 35August 30, 2023 7:13 PM

Yes he did steal them. I’m assuming he credited Fosse at some point.
