To those suggesting castration as a remedy (?) for Fogle's crimes, please note that it will not prevent him from further pedophilic thoughts and acts. The sad truth is that pedophilia is a disease/disorder for which there is no cure.

What gets me about men like Fogle is that if they are attracted to young-looking people, there are millions of 18/19/20 year-olds who look far younger but are perfectly legal to fuck. But it's not about how they look; it's about the thought process and sexual attraction to actual kids that is the turn-on for them. And then there is the idea that they're sexually attracted to prepubescent children, which is so abhorrent that I just can't wrap my head around it.

I have no answers for how society should deal with men like this. For some of them, death is the only end. But I'm also highly worried that imposition of capital punishment in these cases will result in the abuses we've seen with application of the sex offender registry being applied to, for instance and specifically of note here, gay men convicted of something like public indecency but which in no way involved a minor. And if capital punishment for pedophilia ever becomes the law, you can count on conservatives working to define acts between consenting adults as subject to this law. You don't even need to look that far to see it already; it is routine for conservatives to claim that homosexuality is equivalent to pedophilia. There was a picture on another thread just the other day in which conservatives held signs and a rally outside an Illinois (IIRC) library holding Drag Queen Story Hours calling them pedophiles.

Most people are unaware of how sex offenders operate. When you see a news story about a physician or a minister or a teacher facing sexual abuse charges keep in mind that they chose these careers to enable their offending. They didn’t start out as good people who one day suddenly ‘went astray’ because they couldn’t deal with work-related stress or whatever bullshit excuse they invent. Sexual predators structure their entire lives— their careers, where they live, and everyone they associate with— around their offending.

Also for R52: the protests surrounding Drag Queen Story Hour aren’t merely fueled by right-wing animus against gays. A registered sex offender in Houston was going into schools and reading to children as part of Drag Queen Story Hour (article at link below). Again, predators will do anything to gain access to victims. No one working directly with children or other vulnerable groups should be exempt from safeguarding procedures including running criminal background checks.
