What are examples of once-common brand name products that people would be surprised to learn are still being produced because they are now so obscure?

Spic and Span was available for years at dollar stores, and some Spic and Span products can still be found there. However, the brand used the pandemic to get itself back on the shelves at regular stores (since it's antibacterial and was already in production and available). Now I see it at Target and grocery stores in my area all the time...no longer at dollar store prices, though.

I think we're talking about things that boomers remember as being constantly in TV commercials, back when it wasn't all ads for medications and car insurance. Tab is gone, but a lot of these still exist as dollar store brands. Prell is STRONG stuff, it'll do a number on your hair. CloseUP toothpaste can still be had at the dollar store, as can Pepsodent. And I use Joy dishwashing detergent even now.
What does one use Jubilee Kitchen Wax to wax, and what about that particular wax relegates it to kitchen-only use? We didn't have it at my house so I've always been curious.
Liquid Geritol is still available on Amazon. And the grocery store still has Sanka. Brylcreem used to still be available at most Walgreens.

80s faves O’Boisies and Tato Skins. Both sold off by Keebler to small time manufacturers but still produced, apparently. They aren’t widely distributed in supermarkets anymore. I can’t remember when I last saw them. I used to live those.
So many instant coffees used to be advertised like Maxim, Brim, Santa, Taster’s Choice, High Point (the flavah!). My family never had any other kind of coffee, up to some point in time. I thought instant coffee was what coffee was supposed to taste like when I first started drinking it.

Pert Plus (Procter & Gamble product) did have a strong smell. However, I have thick & wavy & unruly hair. Pert Plus was like a miracle on my hair (shampoo and conditioner in one). It left a Teflon-like coating on your hair. If you have wavy / unruly hair, you'll understand that that's a good thing.
Pert Plus then changed its formula. 😢
Other popular / obscure / but good hair stuff from the '80s: Agree (really good smell, but shampoo & cond. were separate) and Finesse (like Pert Plus, but not as good).

Does anyone remember a clear, cranberry juice-colored shampoo made by Jheri Redding in the mid-1970s? It came in a translucent bottle, so you could see the color. I've googled it several times, but have never found anything. I bought more than one bottle, so I know I didn't imagine it.

R153 I really liked the scent of original Pert. It was similar to the original green Herbal Essence by Clairol. I have curly, sometimes frizzy hair, and agree with you. I believe the two in one formulas were the first hair products to include silicones in their formulas.

@r157, gets it, these are suppose to be brands that were once household names, but have now drifted into obscurity, BUT ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

by Anonymous | reply 180 | January 8, 2022 8:37 PM |
R179, yes, silicone would make more sense than Teflon. I didn't mind the scent of Pert, but I can see why some found it too strong. I remember the Herbal Essences (green) shampoo as well. Pert was great, though, b/c it really did save you a step (2 in 1) and really did something different to your hair.

R181 It's too bad they changed the fragrance. I've tried the other versions, second one didn't smell too bad, just that it was no longer herbaceous. The quality is different now. P&G sold the brand to I helieve High Ridge Brands. They've bought many old names, but doubt any of the formulas are the sake.
I've read on forums that many consumers are disappointed in their changing these legacy or heritage brands... Both Coast and Zest bar soaps come to mind. Zest is no longer a true SYNDET bar, ajd the fragrance is weaker in the Coast reformulation. Their version of the original Zest doesn't smell like P&G's. I wonder if P&G merely sold the names only, but kept the formulas and fragrances a secret.

R180, some of the things named in this thread haven’t drifted into obscurity it’s just that the people naming them either haven’t walked down the store aisles they’re stocked on or they haven’t turned on a TV to seen them advertised. Suave, Noxzema, Fanta, Old Spice, Volvo and Sunoco aren’t obscure.

To the person who brought up Lysol in a "small brown bottle" being used by women for douching, I hope to god they weren't referring to this. I bought a few bottles of this at the onset of the pandemic (not to douche, I'm a guy) since it was the only Lysol product I could find. The smell is insanely horrendous - like a toxic spill. Nothing like any other Lysol products on the market today.
The closest thing I could think of to describe it would be, if you've ever had to bug bomb your house. When you return to your home and have to scurry around trying to open all your windows to let the toxic fumes out and can barely breathe - that's what this is like.

R188 I reckon that phenolic smelling formula was the one used as such, as there was only one disinfectant or antiseptic Lysol formula for ages.
I've seen the old adverts myself. According to many women who research and write about such things, the product was more often used as an abortifacient back in those times, yet it could not be marketed or advertised as such. Those adverts would suggest you write to the company for the proper dilutions and instructions. Then later on, an insert or brochure was included in the cartons.

Teens are still wearing jeans, but they are definitely wearing more sweat pants. they call them joggers now. And they are made of cotton yet they cost fucking 40-50 bucks! what a rip off! I had to buy a few for my nephews as xmas presents.

Earth Shoes. I had a pair and they were comfortable to wear.
Despite their somewhat ugly styling, they were all the rage in the mid to late 70s with their so-called "negative heel" sole design which they claimed to be more naturally fitting for your feet. They're still available today in both conventional and original sole styles (although nowhere near as popular).

I bought a few pairs of Levi's corduroy pants from a thrift store: black, baby blue, dark brown, and light tan. They were awesome. So soft, well-made, and comfortable.

Violet breath mints. They were kind of medicinal-tasting. Still in production, I think.

R313 I loved them as well. We called them five pocket corduroys.

R315, I loved Sugar Babies when I was a young kid! Back then, I was addicted to donuts, candy, candy bars and bubble gum. My dentist nicknamed me "old timer" because my teeth always needed work. Despite bad eating habits, I was not overweight. I stayed skinny as a rail until early middle age.
R313/R302 I still have a pair of Levi's Dockers corduroys which had made a brief comeback several years ago and will wear them occasionally. They're durable and comfortable clothing.
[quote] Special K cereal, Teddy peanut butter, Saran Wrap
As already mentioned, these items have not become obscure. I routinely buy both Saran Wrap and Teddy peanut butter (and I always see Special K in the cereal aisles) and they're all available at just about any supermarket chain anywhere in New England.

Anyone who listed Special K must never shop the cereal isle or is an Aldi shopper.

I remember I used to see the products at various grocery store chains for a long time. The last time Clearly Canadian products was at a World Market a few years ago.

I drank a lot of Red Dog Beer in the 90s, when the brand was available everywhere and advertised on television. It’s still produced, but pretty obscure now.

Do old people still take Geritol? They advertised it constantly on TV when I was a kid and everyone was aware of it as a product. I can’t remember seeing a Geritol commercial for decades now.
