What are examples of once-common brand name products that people would be surprised to learn are still being produced because they are now so obscure?
Brands that have become obscure

I was surprised recently to see Joy dishwashing liquid on the shelf. I hadn’t thought about that stuff in years. No longer in the plastic yellow bottle.

|by Anonymous||reply 4||January 8, 2022 7:22 AM|
Jubilee "kitchen wax" used to be ubiquitous on supermarket shelves. Now it's obscure but still available and you know what? It works great.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||January 8, 2022 7:26 AM|
Twinkle copper polish, my whole family used this & I recently had to buy it in bulk off the internet.

Suave can be bought at practically any store that sells shampoo. Drugstores, grocery stores, Target, Walmart, Dollar General...

My local Target carries six different kinds.

|by Anonymous||reply 14||January 8, 2022 11:16 AM|

Dole canned Pinapples

[quote]Spic and Span
Spic and Span was available for years at dollar stores, and some Spic and Span products can still be found there. However, the brand used the pandemic to get itself back on the shelves at regular stores (since it's antibacterial and was already in production and available). Now I see it at Target and grocery stores in my area all the time...no longer at dollar store prices, though.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||January 8, 2022 11:34 AM|
Prell shampoo once commanded 86% of the shampoo market. Hard to believe. I also remember something called "Close Up" toothpaste, haven't seen that in a Walgreens in decades.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||January 8, 2022 11:36 AM|
|by Anonymous||reply 19||January 8, 2022 11:37 AM|
Pearl Drops tooth polish. It would scrub the enamel right off your teeth. I think they were sued right out of the market by people with damaged teeth.

|by Anonymous||reply 31||January 8, 2022 11:51 AM|
Geritol (as we knew it) was taken off the market because of the high cases of hemochromatosis. It still exists as a brand name for a line of multivitamins.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||January 8, 2022 11:54 AM|

A lot of these brands are not only still in production, they are widely available. Prell, Close Up, Suave, Saran Wrap, Noxzema, Crystal Light, Special K, Dream Whip, Country Time, Pert, etc. are all still fairly ubiquitous.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||January 8, 2022 12:45 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 53||January 8, 2022 12:47 PM|

"They were all in goodly gilt armours, and brave purple cassocks apon them, spicke, and spanne newe."
|by Anonymous||reply 63||January 8, 2022 1:01 PM|
Snapple also changed their bottles so they don’t look like they did at their peak. Very generic look now that gets lost among all the competition.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||January 8, 2022 1:04 PM|
"Darlie" toothpaste, but not in the US.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||January 8, 2022 1:07 PM|
All of the old Rockefeller oil companies have disappeared: Conoco, Sunoco, Amoco, Esso, etc.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||January 8, 2022 1:08 PM|
Texaco still survives outside the US as Caltex.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||January 8, 2022 1:15 PM|

Most are still around, but it does bring up the point of how they advertise now. Where? When? How?
|by Anonymous||reply 72||January 8, 2022 1:35 PM|
Oh, they're probably constantly being advertised on TV and in newspapers.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||January 8, 2022 1:46 PM|
[quote]Oh, they're probably constantly being advertised on TV and in newspapers.
What's a news....paper?
|by Anonymous||reply 74||January 8, 2022 1:53 PM|
Growing up we had a cleaning lady that washed the walls and floors with powder Spic and Span, I still do that. It smells so fresh.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||January 8, 2022 2:19 PM|
I think we're talking about things that boomers remember as being constantly in TV commercials, back when it wasn't all ads for medications and car insurance. They still hawk the hell out of laundry detergent nowadays, though it seems women NEVER do laundry in them anymore (only hipster men and men of color, as they babysit).
|by Anonymous||reply 76||January 8, 2022 2:21 PM|
|by Anonymous||reply 77||January 8, 2022 2:27 PM|
Obscure or discontinued? The one thing that really worked well for my sinuses was Dristan tablets, and it’s no longer manufactured for sale in Canada. I haven’t found anything comparable.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||January 8, 2022 2:28 PM|
'cause the Albertans make meth from them.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||January 8, 2022 2:35 PM|
Are Clark candy bars still around? I watched Terms of Endearment last night and what a time machine that movie is. They had Dawn laundry detergent with the mother and the baby on the box.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||January 8, 2022 2:39 PM|
Prell and Pert, were they the same thing ?? I swear Pert was the scariest shampoo ever.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||January 8, 2022 2:41 PM|
R79 - is that why you can’t get them here anymore?
|by Anonymous||reply 82||January 8, 2022 2:41 PM|
|by Anonymous||reply 83||January 8, 2022 2:44 PM|
When I was a kid we always had a spray can of Medi-Quik for scrapes and cuts, but I haven't seen it in years.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||January 8, 2022 2:45 PM|
|by Anonymous||reply 85||January 8, 2022 2:45 PM|
R80 Clark Bars are theoretically still around, but seem to be out of stock even at the factory.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||January 8, 2022 2:46 PM|
Tab is gone, but a lot of these still exist as dollar store brands. Prell is STRONG stuff, it'll do a number on your hair. CloseUP toothpaste can still be had at the dollar store, as can Pepsodent. And I use Joy dishwashing detergent even now.
What does one use Jubilee Kitchen Wax to wax, and what about that particular wax relegates it to kitchen-only use? We didn't have it at my house so I've always been curious.
Liquid Geritol is still available on Amazon. And the grocery store still has Sanka. Brylcreem used to still be available at most Walgreens.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||January 8, 2022 2:46 PM|
Rough Rider condoms.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||January 8, 2022 2:51 PM|
Sanka...speaking of...will keep a jar of instant coffee in case of some storm jic...it is more than ground coffee!
|by Anonymous||reply 89||January 8, 2022 2:52 PM|
I remember Sanka and Tab being in my mother's pantry, and Ovaltine. Malt. And Hydrox cookies.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||January 8, 2022 2:53 PM|
Is Minute Rice still around?
|by Anonymous||reply 91||January 8, 2022 2:54 PM|
Is Chuckles candy still around is the better question, that stuff as a child thrilled me. Amazing I have any teeth with all the candy we kids used to consume.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||January 8, 2022 2:56 PM|
r87, Jubilee is used to add shine to countertops and kitchen appliances after you put it on and polish it up a bit. Because it's a wax, it last longer than Windex, say.

|by Anonymous||reply 98||January 8, 2022 3:14 PM|
What was so scary about Pert shampoo, r81? I think you can still find it at discount places like Big Lots and the dollar store
|by Anonymous||reply 99||January 8, 2022 3:17 PM|
This thread really brought out the eldergays.
|by Anonymous||reply 100||January 8, 2022 3:19 PM|
A guy who went to church with us was on the P&G team that developed Pert. I remember around 1980 as the brand was being introduced he gave us a sample bottle.
80s faves O’Boisies and Tato Skins. Both sold off by Keebler to small time manufacturers but still produced, apparently. They aren’t widely distributed in supermarkets anymore. I can’t remember when I last saw them. I used to live those.
So many instant coffees used to be advertised like Maxim, Brim, Santa, Taster’s Choice, High Point (the flavah!). My family never had any other kind of coffee, up to some point in time. I thought instant coffee was what coffee was supposed to taste like when I first started drinking it.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||January 8, 2022 3:20 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 104||January 8, 2022 3:29 PM|
Have you smelled it, R99? It was like washing your hair with car wax, I swear to God. My friend's mother was still using it in the nineties. It's cheap, so a lot of people used it I guess.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||January 8, 2022 3:29 PM|

Brands to be added to the scrap heap of history very soon: Dodge and Chrysler, to be followed by Lincoln.
|by Anonymous||reply 117||January 8, 2022 4:21 PM|
I feel like I rarely see a new Volvo on the road, at least around these parts in the US. Even before the pandemic the dealer’s lot near me was pretty empty of new cars, but maybe that meant there was high demand.
In Australia the ubiquitous Holden (GM) brand was discontinued, and Ford is down to the Focus as its only non-SUV model. The non-luxury car market there is almost entirely Korean and Japanese brands now.
|by Anonymous||reply 118||January 8, 2022 4:29 PM|
Not so sure, R117, particularly with Lincoln. It’s sales have increased year over year.
|by Anonymous||reply 119||January 8, 2022 4:34 PM|
When "Halston" the mini-series premiered last year, I was really surprised to see several of his perfumes are still manufactured.
|by Anonymous||reply 120||January 8, 2022 4:38 PM|
Technically Dristan tablets are still made (though out of stock on Amazon) but it's phenylephrine, no better than placebo.
|by Anonymous||reply 121||January 8, 2022 4:40 PM|

Their aviator jacket with dog collar was one of the first fad items I watched unfold. Once exclusive, knockoffs flooded vendor flea markets and discount chains. Soon, nearly every one in highschool had a members only jacket.

R29, [bold]Sunoco[/bold] is the official fuel of NASCAR.
In addition to being along I95 and the PA & NJ Turnpikes, there are Sunoco stations all over the Philadelphia region, there was a Sunoco refinery in Philadelphia until 2018.
There are also [bold]Conoco[/bold] gas stations all over Philadelphia and it’s suburbs.
There are [bold]Esso[/bold] gas stations in the Williamsburg/VA Beach area of Virginia (not sure about other places in the US) and all over Canada.
There are [bold]Amoco[/bold] gas stations in South Jersey.

Bobbie Brooks women’s clothing was extremely popular (at least it was in fashion-forward Indiana where we lived) . Immortalized as the slacks Diane dribbles off in the song “Jack and Diane” by fellow Hoosier John Cougar Mellenkamp. Looks like it’s defunct now after a period of being a Wal-Mart plus size brand.
|by Anonymous||reply 146||January 8, 2022 5:52 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 152||January 8, 2022 7:36 PM|
Pert Plus (Procter & Gamble product) did have a strong smell. However, I have thick & wavy & unruly hair. Pert Plus was like a miracle on my hair (shampoo and conditioner in one). It left a Teflon-like coating on your hair. If you have wavy / unruly hair, you'll understand that that's a good thing.
Pert Plus then changed its formula. 😢
Other popular / obscure / but good hair stuff from the '80s: Agree (really good smell, but shampoo & cond. were separate) and Finesse (like Pert Plus, but not as good).

My grandma used Jubilee liquid wax on her fridge and on her floors (linoleum tile, IIRC). One of my cousins still uses Jubilee. Not sure where she obtains it from.
In the old days, I guess refrigerators were treated with more care and pride.

Some of you seem really confused by this topic.
The OP specified that we name products that used to be ubiquitous but are now obscure and yet [bold] are still being produced.[/bold]
So I'm don't understand why someone would name Studebaker (which hasn't been produced in decades and decades--from before I was born), and why other posters feel compelled to announce that other people's nominations are still being produced, when that was specifically what the OP asked for.

Does anyone remember a clear, cranberry juice-colored shampoo made by Jheri Redding in the mid-1970s? It came in a translucent bottle, so you could see the color. I've googled it several times, but have never found anything. I bought more than one bottle, so I know I didn't imagine it.

R153 I really liked the scent of original Pert. It was similar to the original green Herbal Essence by Clairol. I have curly, sometimes frizzy hair, and agree with you. I believe the two in one formulas were the first hair products to include silicones in their formulas.
|by Anonymous||reply 179||January 8, 2022 9:33 PM|
@r157, gets it, these are suppose to be brands that were once household names, but have now drifted into obscurity, BUT ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

|by Anonymous||reply 180||January 8, 2022 9:37 PM|
R179, yes, silicone would make more sense than Teflon. I didn't mind the scent of Pert, but I can see why some found it too strong. I remember the Herbal Essences (green) shampoo as well. Pert was great, though, b/c it really did save you a step (2 in 1) and really did something different to your hair.

R181 It's too bad they changed the fragrance. I've tried the other versions, second one didn't smell too bad, just that it was no longer herbaceous. The quality is different now. P&G sold the brand to I helieve High Ridge Brands. They've bought many old names, but doubt any of the formulas are the sake.
I've read on forums that many consumers are disappointed in their changing these legacy or heritage brands... Both Coast and Zest bar soaps come to mind. Zest is no longer a true SYNDET bar, ajd the fragrance is weaker in the Coast reformulation. Their version of the original Zest doesn't smell like P&G's. I wonder if P&G merely sold the names only, but kept the formulas and fragrances a secret.

R182, I wasn't aware of the Zest / Coast situations. P&G does really come up with some amazing products. It makes sense that the sold the names & packaging only (keeping the formulas to themselves).

R180, some of the things named in this thread haven’t drifted into obscurity it’s just that the people naming them either haven’t walked down the store aisles they’re stocked on or they haven’t turned on a TV to seen them advertised. Suave, Noxzema, Fanta, Old Spice, Volvo and Sunoco aren’t obscure.

To the person who brought up Lysol in a "small brown bottle" being used by women for douching, I hope to god they weren't referring to this. I bought a few bottles of this at the onset of the pandemic (not to douche, I'm a guy) since it was the only Lysol product I could find. The smell is insanely horrendous - like a toxic spill. Nothing like any other Lysol products on the market today.
The closest thing I could think of to describe it would be, if you've ever had to bug bomb your house. When you return to your home and have to scurry around trying to open all your windows to let the toxic fumes out and can barely breathe - that's what this is like.

R188 I reckon that phenolic smelling formula was the one used as such, as there was only one disinfectant or antiseptic Lysol formula for ages.
I've seen the old adverts myself. According to many women who research and write about such things, the product was more often used as an abortifacient back in those times, yet it could not be marketed or advertised as such. Those adverts would suggest you write to the company for the proper dilutions and instructions. Then later on, an insert or brochure was included in the cartons.

I was under the impression these edible polyester-based cooking oils fell out of favour, as they depleted Potassium, as well as some of the fat-soluble vitamins.

Old Dutch Cleanser.
When I was a young boy, it was always present in our kitchen, as it was my mother's go-to cleaner for scouring dirty pots and pans in the aftermath of feeding a family 0f 10 (including my parents).

When I was in high school in the 1980's ALL of the kids wore jeans, although I preferred my Levi's Corduroys.
NO teens wear jeans anymore and it's made Levi's kind of obscure

Par for the course but some of you don't know the difference between obscure brands and DEFUNCT brands.

Teens are still wearing jeans, but they are definitely wearing more sweat pants. they call them joggers now. And they are made of cotton yet they cost fucking 40-50 bucks! what a rip off! I had to buy a few for my nephews as xmas presents.

Earth Shoes. I had a pair and they were comfortable to wear.
Despite their somewhat ugly styling, they were all the rage in the mid to late 70s with their so-called "negative heel" sole design which they claimed to be more naturally fitting for your feet. They're still available today in both conventional and original sole styles (although nowhere near as popular).

I bought a few pairs of Levi's corduroy pants from a thrift store: black, baby blue, dark brown, and light tan. They were awesome. So soft, well-made, and comfortable.

R315, I loved Sugar Babies when I was a young kid! Back then, I was addicted to donuts, candy, candy bars and bubble gum. My dentist nicknamed me "old timer" because my teeth always needed work. Despite bad eating habits, I was not overweight. I stayed skinny as a rail until early middle age.
R313/R302 I still have a pair of Levi's Dockers corduroys which had made a brief comeback several years ago and will wear them occasionally. They're durable and comfortable clothing.
[quote] Special K cereal, Teddy peanut butter, Saran Wrap
As already mentioned, these items have not become obscure. I routinely buy both Saran Wrap and Teddy peanut butter (and I always see Special K in the cereal aisles) and they're all available at just about any supermarket chain anywhere in New England.

Do old people still take Geritol? They advertised it constantly on TV when I was a kid and everyone was aware of it as a product. I can’t remember seeing a Geritol commercial for decades now.
