Watched this film for the first time last night and thought it was lovely. Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray all gave fine performances.

A masterpiece that is just as true today!

Just another brilliantly worthy Oscar winner by a brilliant director and cowriter.
Yawn.
Thank heavens our standards have changed to embrace the mediocre, the fantastic and the "proud me" films that mean so much to their targeted sub-sub-groups.

My favorite movie.

It’s a perfect movie. Remember Shirley McClain on Inside the Actors Studio talking about rehearsing a scene with Jack Lemon over and over, and Billy Wilder said: “Great. Now just remove 18 seconds."

Love it! And that office party scene makes Sterling Cooper look like a convent.

David Lewis, the original Edward Quartermaine on General Hospital, has a great part in this. In fact, the whole ensemble is superb.

A wonderful movie: crackling dialogue, sweet but subtly pithy storyline, and marvellous performances from everyone involved. Shirley was never more charming.

And without it we never would have gotten the Turkey Lurkey Song!

Fred MacMurray had done Disney's "The Shaggy Dog" before "The Apartment". Story was that a woman came up to him on the street and slapped him for his nasty guy portrayal in the second film.
Looking at his list of credits, it seems that the story that Fred decided to play nice guys after that might be true.

I hate it. I don’t like Hack Lemmon’s self-pity in his Wilder movies.

Marilyn should have been the star!

R10 I tend to agree with you about Lemmon. I still haven’t watched Blake Edwards’s Days of Wine and Roses to completion. I stop right before the famous greenhouse scene. I can’t bear the thought of all the Lemmoning.

Agree that while it's a quality film, Jack Lemmon is in full "Jack Lemmon mode" and Shirley MacLaine is in full "Shirley MacLaine mode" and if, like me, you prefer these performers in small doses, you just might hate this very well-made movie.
