HENRY DANGER AND CAPTAIN MAN

This was a show on Nickelodeon, two hot guys ala Batman and Robin. Lots of physical interplay between them. Was this on anyone's radar? Muscle Daddy and Twink stuff extraordinaire.

R4, I'm not R1 but I agree about posting images in the OP, thread titles can be vague or misleading and people aren't always as descriptive in their OP text as they may think they're being which makes people scroll past things that may interest them. Despite OP's Batman & Robin reference I didn't know what this thread was about until I did a Google image search.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've recently been subjected to this show pretty much every night (they put reruns on in every Nickelodeon block) for over a week thanks to having my little cousins & their parents (big cousins) over while they're in town. Little cousins were very young pre-schoolers/gradeschoolers when 'Henry Danger' originally aired, so it's a show to which they have a formative attachment, and even though they're now preteens they still seem to really enjoy it (maybe on a different level?) as do their folks. To be fair, I remember really liking the earlier Nickelodeon hits 'The Amanda Show' & 'Drake & Josh' at their current age, so I guess it's geared to that age demo and their parents.

OP is right, though; the script, blocking and acting on 'Henry Danger' (and the sequel series 'Danger Force' flies really close to the mark--but of course it does, it's a Schne !der's Bakery production. In what seems to be the final season/episodes in the series, the gay references & innuendos kick into high gear, many of them hinting or teasing about the growing and changing personal relationship between Henry/Kid Danger and his beloved mentor Ray/Captain Man (to be clear, I personally don't approve of those jokes until this final season, in which Henry turns 18 and actually looks like a young man not a little boy).

In the two-parter episode 'Back To The Danger', there's even an explicit mention. Captain Man's old sidekick (pre-Henry), the now-grownup and villainous Drex (kind of a Jason Todd expy), confronts the pair. At one point, Captain Man is tasked to escort a child to safety out of range of the throwdown, and so leaves an 18-year old Henry to "keep Drex busy" in the meantime. True to superhero formula, Henry & Drex trashtalk for a minute or two before they engage in physical combat. Drex taunts Henry "Kid, I'm gonna crush you--then I'm gonna crush your *boyfriend* Ray when he comes back!". To which Henry barks back, without any flinch or revulsion or a scramble to deny, "we're COWORKERS!" The fact that there was no spittake moment here was refreshing, and also how it was treated as a semi-serious argument (maybe even a jealous one, considering Drex & Henry's shared affiliation?) Henry & Drex then went on to discuss their previous fight, which involved literal onscreen spanking.

Oh, and Captain Man called a scientist "Daddy" in this episode, for no apparent reason. So there's that.

I am surprised that Henry Danger wasn't a victim of the cancel culture, as it pretty much had something to offend everyone ( racial stereotyping, punching out old people, Capt Man trying to seduce Henry's mother) and this:

R8 right? Iirc one episode had Mpreg--I've never seen that on a live-action kids' show before. I've also clocked blink-and-you'll-miss-it references to B DSM, child br!des, sexbots, siblingcest, prison rape, hottub hookups, furniture sex, and fingering. It's a bit uncomfortable watching this with kids who thankfully aren't getting any of that.

The show finale even has Kid Danger faking his own death and attending his own funeral in plain clothes, so he can be free to be a superhero in a different city (like Dick Grayson did, I guess). Which is pretty fucking dark.

Again, reminder that this show is primarily targeted at the age 8-15 demo. From what I see quickly scanning online reviews, though, older people seem to enjoy it as much if not more (hungover students and parents mostly).

Actual final season Ray & Henry dialogue:

"So, how long you been thinking about leaving me?" "Look, I'm not trying to leave you, okay..."

"You don't seem very committed to me!" "I'm not graduating highschool because of my commitment to this..."

In this recording of a 2018 Comicon Revolution convention panel, Jace at just past the 12 minute mark remarks playfully and flirtatiously that in the final season there’d be “makeout” scenes between him and his costar Cooper (who plays Ray), and Cooper blusters over this was a nervous laugh. Sadly this was not the case in the final cut of the show.

(from the episode 'Saturday Night Lies') HENRY, about RAY: "Amazing man, my *Daddy*"

Peep how right before the camera cuts away, Henry’s hand opens under Ray's as if he wanted to hold Ray’s hand and entwine their fingers after the suggestive little look and brush below the chin. Also, who makes a physical gesture like that to their father? That is a total boyfriend move.

Keep in mind the context that this happened right after Lacey (Ray's ex girl) and her new man were being touchy-feely in front of Ray over dinner to make him jealous and act superior. In response, Henry instinctively and automatically drapes his arm over Ray’s, makes heavy bedroom eyes at him, touches him and talks to him while ignoring their dinner guests. Allegedly they are trying to play close loving relatives, but out of full context and even within it, it really comes off like Henry is Ray's twink jailbait boyfriend showing off and rubbing PDA with Ray in Lacey's face.

Ray, yelling at his new young teen sidekicks on seeing a College-aged Henry after time apart: “SHUT UP, I’m talking to Henry!...he’s mine now.”

The clear favouritism becomes a running joke. While Ray does come to respect his new young kids eventually and feel a degree of protectiveness for them, he always shows the most open love and enthusiasm and care and pride for Henry above them, and doesn’t bother making a secret of it. And he’s devastated whenever Henry doesn’t always demonstrate the same back.

Same episode (‘Return Of The Kid’): Ray also drools copiously all down himself and his clothes at first sight of Henry; Ray offers to go to a nail bar with Henry with the implication they’ve gone together several times before; Ray & Henry dance a tango; Ray tells Henry “I love you” and “I’ve missed you” in what sounds like a non-platonic way; the lines “we’re just kind of vibing right now”/“you don’t even know what that means”/“it’s means like, we’re together, but not really”, “looks like you & me are going to POUND TOWN, buddy!” and “I want to see that sweat stain you..”

There's a moment in the episode 'Thumb War', during a scene where Ray & Henry get trapped at very close quarters in a rocket, where it seems like a half-asleep Ray actually pinches Henry's ass (go to about 27 seconds). At least, Henry gasps about something unseen, at the same moment Ray shifts beside him (his arms are out of frame so we can't see what he's doing).

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 21February 20, 2023 9:28 PM

^And then there's the episode with a different rocket, the Love Shuttle--a boudoir rocket (originally designed by Captain Man's scientist henchman Schwoz for personal use) in which Ray & Henry hitch a ride as a convenient way to get into space for a mission.

This shuttle is bigger, with vibrating seats, sexy R&B onboard music, and satin & shag trim & soft pink lights everywhere. When the music comes on as the heroes prep to launch, they spend a good second moving suggestively to it in their seats. Ray is reaaaaally getting his hips into it. When Henry irritably asks Schwoz over comms how to turn it off (once the novelty wears off, I guess), Schwoz admonishes Henry, "'aw, come on! 'Love Music' isn't for turning off, it's for turning *on*...." Like...just...what did Schwoz think Ray & Henry were gonna get up to in that rocket?

I...don't even know what to say to make any normative sense of this show, at this point. I'm not sure it's even possible. Am genuinely pretty shocked and impressed that the writers & producers allowed so much innuendo under the radar. Every single episode has at least a handful or several instances.

Ray (as Captain Man): “It’s not a question of age; it’s a question of experience, training…”

Evil Henchman:“ Uh, 'scuse me, are we gonna fight? Or do you two need to see a couples therapist?”

Love that show. The sequel, Danger Force, just doesn't work as well because the Ray/Henry chemistry is missing.

Watching the show now I'm bemused at the way Jasper had a permanent crush on Henry, though Charlotte was indifferent to Henry. There were one or two episodes where Jasper was supposed to have a girlfriend but it wasn't believable. His Henry worship was way over the top.

There is a recurring in-joke in every season: Somebody will mention the second season of Will and Grace, then everybody will respond loudly "That is the BEST season!" Did somebody in Henry Danger work on the Will and Grace show or is it just a random recurring gay joke?

[quote] Jasper had a permanent crush on Henry, though Charlotte was indifferent to Henry. There were one or two episodes where Jasper was supposed to have a girlfriend but it wasn't believable. His Henry worship was way over the top.

It seemed like in the last couple seasons they were trying to push Piper/Jasper, which was...beyond gross. And didn't work.

Jasper was absolutely taken with Henry from their first encounter, and that never really changed or went away. When the show wasn't playfully hinting at Ray & (of age!) Henry developing a sexual chemistry, it was hinting at Jasper lusting Henry or generally being gay. Many of the teen fans made tons of edits and manifestos about Jasper being coded gay, so it wasn't that subtle.

As for Charlotte/Henry, it's so refreshing that the show debunked that pairing. I wonder why they did, though? It isn't the usual formula for a tweencom to write their young male & female leads as averse to a romance between them, Dawson & Joey style. It made perfect sense in 'Henry Danger', though--you're right that Charlotte was always apathetic to Henry as more than an annoying brother & coworker/classmate, and she was certainly too smart and hard to impress and straightforwardly blunt for him.

There's also a Danger Force episode, the one where Captain Man plays a runway fashion model (one of his funniest roles). There were twin children guest actors, one of whom was transgender, and they carefully explained that for the audience. That was 2 years ago.

R67 yes, you’re right, that scene is not at all subtle. I love that moment. In it, 17 year old Henry is cocking his hip and snapping his neck pouting and glaring at Ray from under his lashes in the most bitchy twinky needy way, and the dialogue he has with Ray is super loaded. Idk how this goes over straight parents’ heads.

I kind of wish they hadn’t laugh tracked it, it would have been a shocking and thought-provoking conversation with no canned effects—the idea that a growing young man with sexual ambiguity who’s employed as a sidekick to a handsome powerful older hero might become blindsided by powerful inconvenient (and unreciprocated at first, let’s be clear) feelings of lust or limerence.

It’s described at R20 and also shown at a few minutes into the compilation.

[quote] Henry being gangbanged by Rick Twitler, The Time Jerker, and Drex.

Henry would go crazy for that. Especially getting drilled open by Drex in front of other villains. Think of the semiotics alone! Allowing himself to be penetrated by the older man he supplanted and bettered in every way, except in terms of sexual dominance. Those two have already enacted a bunch of k!nks when fighting with each other in public anyway--most memorably choking, spanking, tying up, uniforms, foodplay--so they'd probably be into some very wild and freaky games if they did engage that way.

Drex seems like one of those guys who's same-sex attracted to a small or tentative degree (like brosexual, downlow or situationally-gay/bi) but also really kneejerk-jock homophobic about it because of his rough neglectful upbringing, lonely lifestyle, and his age demographic as well as trauma from how Ray left him. How do we feel about a grown Henry topping Ray?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 76February 26, 2023 11:53 AM

R76, look at Jace's very long fingers and big feet. If anything it might be an indication of his cock size, so the scene might qualify for inclusion into Twink Top.

by Anonymousreply 77February 26, 2023 1:22 PM

R77 could totally see that dynamic tbh!

And Ray definitely sometimes gives bossy demanding power bottom/vers Queen vibes, liking to dom verbally or with muscular cues and order his sidekicks around while laying on his back and letting them do the work to pleasure him (the way HE likes). Ray might be the Captain and he may be Daddy, but that doesn't mean he can't enjoy taking a long thick pounding from an eager stud...

One of the episodes of the final season has as a main theme a pastiche of Grindr/Growlr (in-universe called 'Rumblr'), wherein heroes can socially network via app to match with various villains and connect with them (r: date) or jump straight into a fight (r: fuck).

Ray has grown bored with his Rogues Gallery, but still is very reluctant to use the app to find fresh meat, adamant that he prefers to "meet the old-fashioned way" in passing on the street or at a bar, and once he does give it a try he's disappointed with the overly-physical and non-communicative style of the encounters he sets up. Ray ends up back at a bar commiserating over the romance of hero-villain connections with one of his old enemies, The Toddler, and they both recapture their spark that way.

Henry on the other hand loves the app and takes to it right away, instantly connecting with a villain named Kyle (who honestly just looks like a College basketball hunk with above-average reflexes & strength) and fighting vigorously and joyfully with him right off the bat.

It's pretty obvious what the show was driving at here...

If you want to see the superhero and sidekick dynamic taken up a level, check out the hilarious animated series "The Venture Bros". They had an episode where a superhero named Captain Sunshine was obviously in love with his young (14-15 year old) super sidekick Wonderboy - it's like an open secret and even the public whisper about his attachment to the kid. After the kid got killed, Captain Sunshine was so broken up that he took Hank Venture and basically tried to Stockholm Syndrome him into being the replacement for his lost love. Also, CS's suit has the rainbow flag colors on it.

CS is teary about the loss and wistfully talks about Wonderboy's smile, asks Hank to have a slumber party with him and is hands on when helping Hank try on Wonderboy's old super outfit, running his hand over Hank's butt to check the fit. CS kisses Hank on the lips when Hank is going back home. The showrunner did not skimp on the outright allusions to CS's feelings for the kid.

R80 love Venture Bros.!

Personally General Treister is my favourite character, but you're right that the deconstruction of the hero/ward relationship via Captain Sunshine & Wonderboy was inspired as well as quite sad and dark. One wonders how far poor Hank went along with that madness...

A cute little gay/bi moment in the crossover episode with ‘Game Shakers’ (another Nick teencom, with an ensemble cast)...

At one point Henry descends the stairs of his house to meet the Shakers (from their POV), and when it happens the camera switches to romantic slow-mo and R&B music plays to show that Henry is an object of desire for the drooling Shakers...both the girls and the boys. None of the other teens can look away from Henry or close their mouths, and one of the boys even remarks about Henry “dude’s bringing it...”

R89 Ray really liked calling him 'Trick Boy' constantly. He looked like the cat that got the cream when the magician girl Tatiana got in on the teasing too. Henry really did look like glampunk trade in that get-up and makeup, though, to be fair. And with the burlesque way he was spread-eagle strapped to the wheel at the end, what did the writers want us to think?

The cuff trick and resultant scuffle in this episode was uhhhh....ummmm....well, it was really something. By the end of the bit, Ray had fallen over with his face literally squashed nose-down in a prone Henry's (clothed) ass. With every episode I see, I'm less and less convinced this show was actually made for kids, y'know...

Nickelodeon Easter egg: The Magic Palace setting was often mentioned but never seen in 'Drake & Josh', as a favourite haunt of young Josh who was an aspiring hobbyist magician and went to see magic shows there. That skit at R89 was hot!

Mainly because Jace looked sexy as fuck in that outfit (and hair, actually).

I love seeing his exposed chest, and later on, his abs.

And the ending was great, with Cooper's face landing right on Henry's ass.

Oh, and who is the "blond guy" from Stranger Things that Jace was crushing on at R93?

He does an American accent perfectly.

Also, he was quite a twink himself, back in the day.

Also, I didn't know he was friends with Gregg Sulkin and Cameron Fuller. Aren't they both gay?

R99 Cooper really was an adorable and even pretty teen. Look at those big innocent eyes and that floppy glossy hair! He gives Jace at the same age a run for his money.

Not to be a pedant, but define 'British'. Cooper does have an English parent or grandparent and was born in Sheffield, but as a toddler he was taken out of the U.K. to live in Michigan with U.S. relatives and apparently remained there all his life. He doesn't speak with any trace of an English or British accent. He's never been to school in any of the four U.K. nations or the islands, hasn't grown up or taken work here, has never once paid British taxes or voted or been on the HMRC database, and presumably was removed from the NHS system before the age of 5 (in the early 1980s). He hasn't even moved back to Britain with his family or seemingly visited much in adulthood, beyond a few Comic Con events for work, so it's not as if there's any hiraeth troubling him.

It's true and fair to say at the utmost Cooper has 50% British parentage/ancestry/blood and a British birthplace--he isn't a full Brit, though. On first meeting and without knowing anything about him, no-one would guess he was British at all. Cooper is culturally, linguistically, legally and financially an American, through and through. To call Cooper a Brit or an Englishman would be like calling Trent Alexander Arnold (England national footballer) an American or even a Jamaican because that's where his Dad & grandad immigrated from respectively--listen to Trent speak and watch how he behaves for just five minutes, and you could never classify him as anything but fully enculturated Scouser (Trent wouldn't say English, of course ;)). Unless you were a massive xenophobe and a racist, but that's another discussion.

Though now it's come up, I'd be curious to know if Cooper has a dual passport or applied for one, like Frankie Grande has just done for Italy (successfully). Would be a bit cheeky if he had. Can't blame him, though, state of the States...

R100 from what I gather online, for the past few years Jace has been working sporadically and quietly, both behind-the-camera on some film projects, and also as a model for fashion shoots. He seems to have had emotional health struggles, so perhaps that's taken a lot of time to sort out.

He is so gorgeous, he must have had casting couch offers aplenty. Whether or not he's availed himself and jumped on them is another question.

[quote] He seems to have had emotional health struggles, so perhaps that's taken a lot of time to sort out.

Interesting that you mention this.

Just scrolling through his Instagram, Jace looks sad/reflective in most of his photos.

Right off the bat, I thought that he looked depressed. And lonely.

He seems to spend a lot of time at his house in New Mexico, just playing with his dogs or walking around the property.

Such a handsome and personable guy, you wouldn't think he would be lonely.

In one photo of him getting on a plane in Kenya, he wrote: "Easier to make friends out here."

Then in another photo on New Year's Day, he wrote: "New Year New Me. Fresh Start for everyone."

Sometimes when you work on a popular show for a long time, you're surrounded by what becomes your "family." Then when the show ends and everyone goes their separate ways, it must be hard to adjust to not being around them any more.

Must be especially hard when you're also making that transition from kid to adult.

Jace speaks in this interview with the 'Breakfast Club' show on Power 1051 FM radio about him being a naturally introverted and low-energy person, a sufferer of anxiety & depression & addiction (apparently it runs in his family), and disliking the self-centred ambitious user culture of Hollywood & L.A.

He seems like a lovely person, honestly. Perhaps far too sensitive and personable for the business he's in. Could also explain why he turns to organised religion for solace (a shame, but we can't have everything, I suppose..)

The musical episode genuinely has some fine vocal writing and bookwork, I'm shocked. Jace & Cooper sing really well together, perfectly harmonising--their duet in their car ('You're Captain Man/Bro') is my favourite song of the episode.

Frankie Grande also performs wonderfully, especially when it comes to choreo and movement. It's odd he doesn't get more stage work and sitcom work. That said, referring to the previous post, it does bother me that the way his sister was treated by Schne!der and Nickelodeon doesn't seem to bother him at all. Isn't he disturbed or upset by that, even a little? Perhaps he squared it away by rationalising that he didn't join 'Henry Danger' as a character until Dan left/got fired...

It's interesting that Cooper is straight, and Jace's sexuality is unknown.

Maybe he has a thing for Cooper that is causing him to be depressed.

I can totally see it.

Cooper was a big part of his life, during his formative years.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 115March 2, 2023 9:51 PM

R115 aww man, that would be so sad and heartbreaking if true.

If Jace is gay or bi, then yes, being that close to a handsome, caring, fit and attentive mature man almost every day of your adolescent life, only to have to 'graduate' and then let go of him almost totally so he can return to his straight family must be torture. The way Jace & Cooper interact irl is very flirtatious and 'coupley' at times, whether intentional or not, so obviously there's potential there even if it remains unspoken or unexplored.

And even if Jace is straight or never had (or acknowledged he had) deep romantic/sexual feelings for Cooper, to let go of a platonic bond that became so close and familiar and entrenched would still be really hard emotionally. For six whole formative years, young sensitive Jace was entitled to a large percentage of Cooper's time and attention (albeit for a paycheck), and then suddenly that stopped dead one day. Anyone would take it hard.

While there seem to be several major factors causing Jace personal plight--career insecurity, working environment, family dynamics, natural predisposition, etc.--it's not difficult to imagine that losing touch with Cooper may have hurt him. And it might be why he still insists on working as a part of production on 'Danger Force' and still wants to make a 'Henry Danger' movie.

R115 it seems like Frankie Grande has a little crush on Cooper, too, but without any intensity or expectation or heavy feelings involved. Frankie flirts with Cooper a lot on-set, behind-the-scenes and in shoots. Hey, might as well shoot your shot right?

The end of R109 (the musical episode) has a funny innuendo: when Captain Man/Ray goes to punch Frankini out but finds he cannot because of Frankini's musical curse. When the fist coming at Frankini doesn't connect. Frankini giggles, smiles, and teases Ray, "does this happen often?" (Ray replies, furious, "I think you know it doesn't!" while Henry to one side just looks nonplussed).
