Shows these days don’t have them. Sad.
Arthur’s theme song is great and sweet and honest. It actually has thoughtful lyrics. Love it!!!

Thank you for being a friend from The Golden Girls!

I don't know if this counts because it wasn't written for the show:
Sopranos - Woke Up This Morning by the Alabama 3

I just learned that the Arthur cartoon character is supposed to be an aardvark. He looks NOTHING like an aardvark!

Despite never watching the show I always liked the Thirtysomething theme, the part used on the show is toward the end.

Not a song with words, but this theme music from Journey to the Unknown always unnerved me. It still does!

The Jeffersons. The worst is Friends. Just ghastly.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 4, 2022 12:40 AM |
I loved the opening of The Munsters when I was a kid. Those funky dissonances paired with a tuba = Genius!

We cover this subject at least once a week.
I never watched the show, but I've recently found this one (last year), and absolutely love it. It's bright and uplifting, and the absolute best theme the show ever had (I've done the reaearch). Thank you, Billy Barber!

Family Ties for the win. Especially when the female vocalists sings “throoooooggghhh”. Me and my brother used to fight over who got to sing the female part when we would sing it together.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 4, 2022 5:43 AM |
Ha ha that’s so funny that you fought over it, my sisters and I used to do that kind of stuff too.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 4, 2022 6:07 AM |
Mainly because their bloopers are so hilarious, I'm nominating New Zoo Revue. (theme below)
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 4, 2022 6:08 AM |
Comment 30 was for the Family Ties post.
And this website is funky so I’m not going to reply anymore , but great thread OP. me and my kids loved Arthur and still talk about it.
For the Banana Splits poster: Bob Marley was a house Dad for awhile, living in Delaware. His kids watched the show every day (or whenever) and he had that tune stuck in his head. He turned it into Buffalo Soldier.

r5 Arthur used to look like an Aardvark in the early books.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 4, 2022 6:29 AM |
That AMC theme takes me right back, r13. I'm still partial to the original one with the hand opening the book. It reminds me so much of my grandmother.

R29 Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams.

I loved the show so the theme song puts me in a better mood.

I thought the opening song from "Karen" was great when I was a little kid -- much later I found out who sang it.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 5, 2022 10:33 AM |
Wait there was actually a show called "Karen"? 😂
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 5, 2022 12:46 PM |
Most HBO shows still do opening credits. I love the theme from “Succession.”

The fucking Patty Duke Show theme song, wh., thanks to the DL, has exhumed itself in my brain and is on a constant loop. Have you any idea what it's like to be trapped with no hope of escape hearing this tune over and over? Of course you do, this site is Drama Queen Ne Plus Ultra? What was I thinking?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 5, 2022 1:55 PM |
It's old but the brass and twangy guitar mesh so well
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 5, 2022 5:53 PM |
This one from a children's show. Just give the lyrics a listen. Beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 5, 2022 5:58 PM |
For theme songs with words: 1) The Pruitts of Southampton 2) Gidget 3) Mr. Ed 4) The Patty Duke Show
For instrumental themes"
1) Perry Mason 2) Hawaii Five-O 3) Mission: Impossible

There are MANY beloved 80's cartoon intro themes but this one is one of the best. Cheesy goodness.

I can't believe it took that long to post Angie.
If instrumentals count, it's this one.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 6, 2022 9:49 PM |
I was addicted to this show, Jimmy & Jack Wild. I honestly believe this show fukked me up. This song alone would do it. I still have my H.R. Pufnstuf lunchbox.

No one mentioned Gilmore Girls? It’s one of the best, and sweet/touching, like the Golden Girls theme.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | January 8, 2022 3:43 PM |
One of the best TV series ever and one of the best theme songs to match!

Mary Tyler Moore Theme Song: 'Love Is All Around'
by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 12, 2022 6:17 AM |
Mary Tyler Moore Tribute (The Mary Tyler Show pilot opening: 9/19/70)
The first theme song of MTM's first season is the same theme, but it's actually the second verse of 'Love Is All Around,' so the lyrics are not quite as familiar as the more well-known, "Who can turn the world on with her smile?"
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 12, 2022 6:21 AM |
I’m sure it’s been posted, but RIP Marilyn Bergman who wrote the lyrics for this…

Greatest American Hero had a nice opening song and outro- I just never cared for the show itself.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | January 14, 2022 4:16 PM |
I don;t think the first season version of the theme of "The Munsters" works nearly so well as the second, when they bring in the bass more plentifully and add the saxes. I always love how they really swing it when Marilyn appears.

The animation on this is just awful, but the theme song itself is great.

Yes to: Big Brother UK, Brideshead Revisited.
My pick: The Raccoons. An animated Canadian kids show had no right to have such an absolute banger as the theme music (and it totally holds up, just listened again).
