Tell us about Soapdish, Datalounge.

Sally Field's over-acting, Kathy Moriarity's drag queen schtick (and Terri Hatcher), Kevin Klein's raw sexuality, and Whoopi's dry humor were just too perfect a combination for a young, suburban gay-to-be child.

What were your favorite lines from this classic Aaron Spelling camp fest?

I love this movie! It's as funny today as it was then.

Soapdish keeps popping up on my Hulu recommended movies, this thread confirms it's time for a re-watch.

I love how Tawny (Kathy Najimy) kept putting all the women in turbans. "What I feel like is Gloria fucking Swanson!"

Is loving Soapdish as a child an official answer to, "How did you know you were gay?" Or at least, boy, my mom must have known when I asked to rent it repeatedly in third grade.

"From Syosset. Long Island."

by Anonymousreply 20January 4, 2022 12:02 PM

Years ago I dared to mention that I wished Cathy Moriarty was on the poster and I caused an enormous uproar from what turned out to be a large contingent of indignant Dataloungers who didn't think she DESERVED to be on the poster.

by Anonymousreply 21January 4, 2022 12:05 PM

For years I thought she WAS on the poster and had dyed her hair darker only to find out it was Terri Hatcher.

by Anonymousreply 22January 4, 2022 1:21 PM

Dear Angelique, Dear Angelique.

by Anonymousreply 23January 4, 2022 1:23 PM

Dee Dee Hall must have been pissed she didn't asked to make a cameo.

by Anonymousreply 24January 4, 2022 1:23 PM

Kline and Field had surprisingly good chemistry. The daughter-dad subplot was cringe-y. Otherwise very forgettable but mildly amusing.

by Anonymousreply 25January 4, 2022 1:31 PM

"Don't call me Mr. Loman!"

[quote] The daughter-dad subplot was cringe-y.

SHUE is so awful. She hasnt a funny bone in her body. Most of the rest of the casting was so great but she was AWFUL.

by Anonymousreply 27January 4, 2022 2:30 PM

I agree that Shue was terrible. If the rest of the cast hadn’t been so good she would have ruined the movie.

by Anonymousreply 28January 4, 2022 2:32 PM

I’ve seen recently that the trans brigade is trying to cancel this movie for deadnaming Montana but that shit was funny.

“ What am I? 70 David? Am I 70? Why don't you just put me in a walker? Buy a goddamn walker and put me in it."

R33 - there was a spate on posts on Twitter last year. Too many to be a coincidence.

by Anonymousreply 35January 4, 2022 2:44 PM

R28 she’s not as bad as her brother Andrew Shue, who is the definition of bad soap opera acting, playing Billy on Melrose Place, another Aaron Spelling production

by Anonymousreply 36January 4, 2022 2:45 PM

I might be the only person on the planet who thought Shue was fine in this, particularly when she blows up about her turban too.

But it's Kathy who really sells this thing and RDJ as her eye-candy not-quite-victim.

Kathy absolutely deserved a spot on the poster. She's the principal antagonist.

by Anonymousreply 37January 4, 2022 6:05 PM

R37, I agree about Shue too. The Tweety Bird hat scene was gold.

I think they were talking about Kathy Najimy not being on the poster---K. Moriarity is on the poster (the tranny villian).

by Anonymousreply 38January 4, 2022 6:40 PM

if i remember correctly, Cathy Moriarty had a scheduling conflict with the poster shoot and thats why she wasn't on the poster. Its clear from the design that she probably should have been in the teri hatcher spot. back then those shoots could cost $100k or more and while she's legendary in this movie, the studio probably didnt care if she made it on to the poster or not and certainly wouldnt have paid extra to accomodate her schedule

by Anonymousreply 39January 4, 2022 7:31 PM

Kevin Kline was perfect. Whatever movie he's made, I'm watching it. He doesn't get his due.

by Anonymousreply 40January 4, 2022 7:42 PM

I think Shue is a good actress. She can be funny (Adventures in Babysitting) but her role is not much to work with and is a plot device.

Kevin Kline and Cathy Moriarty are absolute perfection in this. I think Kline is just as funny in this as he is in A Fish Called Wanda.

And this thread has helped conjure up a wonderful surprise: Soapdish is FINALLY coming to Blu-Ray April 5, 2022!!!

by Anonymousreply 41January 4, 2022 8:41 PM

It is?! 2022 is looking up already!

by Anonymousreply 42January 4, 2022 9:41 PM

R5 that’s my favorite line too, & the exact moment I fell in love with Teri Hatcher.

by Anonymousreply 43January 4, 2022 11:18 PM

Funny how the movie is a comedy about behind-the-scenes drama in Hollywood, and the opening sequence is basically the same as Singin' in the Rain.

by Anonymousreply 44January 5, 2022 6:15 AM

R44 the whole film takes place in NYC

It’s a NYC taped soap they’re working on

Wonder if they wanted Julia for the Shue role but by then she had blown up.

by Anonymousreply 48January 6, 2022 10:24 AM

[quote]Wonder if they wanted Julia for the Shue role

She would have killed the movie dead - Shue was bad but not as bad as Julia would have been.

Julia is about as funny as a haemorrhoid. Feel free to contradict me and remind me of a hilarious scene or one liner I may have missed.

by Anonymousreply 49January 6, 2022 10:55 AM

I just watched this last night and it was still as good as it was when it was released.

by Anonymousreply 50October 1, 2023 2:03 AM

HI KEVIN!

by Anonymousreply 51October 1, 2023 2:11 AM

I remember watching it as a gayling with my mother and thinking it was SOOOOO funny. Just hysterical. I was 11.

I should rewatch.

by Anonymousreply 52October 1, 2023 2:44 AM

Deadpan has never been sexier than RDJ's David, combined with the eyeglass changes and endearing cynicism.
