"How Do We Talk About Bill Cosby"

Showtime Documentary by Kamau Bell.

Premieres January 30 on Showtime.

I seriously hope this guy doesn't try to re-write history about Cosby.

Judging from the trailer, it can go either way.

Has Phyllica Rashad commented on this project yet?
Has Phyllica Rashad commented on this project yet?

Yes.

She said "Oh, DEAR!"

by Anonymousreply 2January 3, 2022 6:21 AM

Pretty obvious I would think. The doc will celebrate Cosby's achievements and nail him to the cross for choices in his personal life. He'll separate the performer and the person as two entities.

by Anonymousreply 3January 3, 2022 6:30 AM
Showtime Documentary by Kamau Bell.... I seriously hope this guy doesn't try to re-write history about Cosby

I can securely say W Kamau Bell is NOT the type to re-write or squirrel around Cosby's grotesque issues - he's the definition of what idiots and bigots call "woke."

He's very smart and very liberal... and pretty funny.

As said upthread, the doc is probably just gonna talk about the hows/whys/ifs of appreciating Cosby's comedy work and its positive impact WHILE also now knowing about his despicable predilection to drugging+raping women.

by Anonymousreply 4January 3, 2022 6:41 AM

Using one in an attempt to mitigate the other. See he wasn't so bad. He made us laugh despite . . .

Hypocritical racism at its most deplorable.

by Anonymousreply 5January 3, 2022 6:49 AM

Hardly mitigating.

by Anonymousreply 6January 3, 2022 6:52 AM

R6 Deflecting from decades of horrific crimes is mitigation. And worse, blatant racist hypocrisy.

by Anonymousreply 7January 3, 2022 6:55 AM

Fuck you R5 and R7.

Watch the docu and take a pic of yourself after to post here as you'll have twisted yourself into a pretzel to attempt to hold onto your bullshittery of a hypothesis.

by Anonymousreply 8January 3, 2022 7:02 AM

R8 = Deplorable attempting to deflect from Cosby's crimes.

by Anonymousreply 9January 3, 2022 7:05 AM

R3 "Celebrating" a serial drugging rapist? Seriously?

by Anonymousreply 10January 3, 2022 7:07 AM

Celebrate the work, simpleton.

by Anonymousreply 11January 3, 2022 7:55 AM

The "work" didn't spontaneous happen in a vacuum. It was performed by someone. Who is a serial drugging rapist. Simpleton.

by Anonymousreply 12January 3, 2022 8:30 AM

Erratum R12 spontaneously

by Anonymousreply 13January 3, 2022 8:31 AM

People should’ve never jumped on the bandwagon. You can’t stop someone from making an accusation but you can hold them to certain standards of objectivity. There’s no proof Cosby ever assaulted anyone. Just a bunch of vague accusations from the 1970s and 80s.

by Anonymousreply 14January 3, 2022 8:47 AM

Cosby is a rapist who was prosecuted ineptly. I'm perfectly happy never thinking about him ever again but for Blacks, it may be different. The show gave middle-class Blacks representation in the sitcom world, above and beyond The Jeffersons.

I've enjoyed Kevin Spacey's performances, Louis CK's comedy, Charlie Rose's interviews, and Woody Allen's early movies. That doesn't mean I ever want to see any of them perform again.

by Anonymousreply 15January 3, 2022 10:35 AM

R15 nicely stated.

by Anonymousreply 16January 3, 2022 10:43 AM

I never found Bill Cosby very funny.

There, I said it.

by Anonymousreply 17January 3, 2022 1:09 PM

Cosby admitted to doing those things

by Anonymousreply 18January 3, 2022 2:05 PM

Kamau Bell is the wokest of the WOKE.

Blarf.

by Anonymousreply 19January 3, 2022 6:27 PM

R18 No he didn’t.

by Anonymousreply 20January 3, 2022 6:51 PM

Yes he did R20

Cosby admitted to sex involving recreational use of Quaaludes with a series of young women, and he acknowledged that his dispensing the prescription drug was illegal. He also admitted to sex with teenage girls. He also admitted to paying off his victims.

And that's why he was found GUILTY by a jury and he was sent to prison.

R21 You're extrapolating a confession to a crime out of a generic admission from deposition testimony. When you sit for a deposition, you generally have to answer the question as it is posed to you. You don't get to clarify or add context and your attorney is most likely going to advise that you simply answer as plainly as possible.

If you were to ask a man, "when you obtained those glasses of wine at that restaurant, was it ever in your mind to provide alcohol to a woman you wanted to have sex with?", well, what if he says yes? Does that mean he bought wine simply to get a woman intoxicated enough so he could rape or take advantage of her sexually? Or was he just on a date and he ordered a bottle of wine?

The background of that deposition is that there were two women who came forward after Andrea Constand sued him and they both said they took Quaaludes with him consensually back in the 1970s when Quaaludes were a known recreational drug. What happened is women who wanted to publicly accuse him 30-40 years later said, "I think he might have put something in my drink. Since he had Quaaludes, it must have been a Quaalude." That's not how credible accusations work. Plus, there's the claim from Bill Cosby's spokesman that Constand's civil attorney shared her notes with Gloria Allred, who worked as the spokeswoman for the majority of his accusers, and that's why their stories are "eerily similar" in nature. Because she had an inkling of what was in the deposition and she had the accusers tailor their stories to the admissions Cosby made.

by Anonymousreply 22January 4, 2022 2:39 AM

Kamau Bell is a straight up white hater. Major racist. He would definitely rewrite history to make Cosby look like he was framed by “the man”. Cosby is a sick fuck who drugged and raped women of all races. How he’s out of jail is mind boggling. I think BLM must have threatened someone to get him released.

by Anonymousreply 23January 4, 2022 2:40 AM

Do fuck off, R22.

by Anonymousreply 24January 4, 2022 4:33 AM

Wrong, R22. Read the piece in New York Magazine. And watch six of the women relate their story. Gloria Allred has nothing to do with this. The stories ring true, and each of these women is completely credible. They had nothing to gain by coming forward.

I'll never forget watching these women for the first time and nearly sobbing. He betrayed them in the ugliest way possible.

If you look at my posting history, I question many of the cancellations. Not this one. Cosby is 100% guilty. You can say you dont care that he is guilty, but you can't say he isn't guilty.

R23 is a fool or a liar or both...

... probably both.

by Anonymousreply 26January 4, 2022 6:49 AM

Quaaludes were fabulous so I can't fault him for that.

by Anonymousreply 27January 4, 2022 9:02 AM
You're extrapolating a confession to a crime out of a generic admission from deposition testimony. That's bullshit. Cosby couldn't keep his fucking mouth shut.

He ADMITTED TO DRUGGING THESE WOMEN AND HAVING SEX WHILE THEY WERE UNCONSCIOUS.

And he was CONVICTED of rape by a jury and sent to jail.

These are FACTS. Tough shit if you don't like. This all happened

All these scumbags like cosby, epstein and weinstein. They ALL have a PATTERN and a HISTORY of raping people. That's how serial rapists operate.

Look at Andrew Cuomo. All his accusers claimed different things happened to them. A lot of them just felt he was creepy. Did he assault anyone? I don't know. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, because these women all came forward at once, but people complained about cosby and the rest for years. Everyone in the comedy circles have come out publicly and said they knew about Bill Cosby being a rapist. It was no secret. The same with esptein and weinstein

by Anonymousreply 28January 4, 2022 10:58 AM

A similar documentary should be made about Hugh Hefner.

by Anonymousreply 29January 4, 2022 11:04 AM

The black apologist, once again.

by Anonymousreply 30January 4, 2022 11:30 AM

I hope they mention Nina Simone, who had a breakdown the night she opened for Cosby.

by Anonymousreply 31January 4, 2022 11:43 AM

I know lots of “woke” people who defended Cosby. They didn’t deny anything he’s accused of but would complain about how there’s tons of rich white guys who do worse and they are running free while Cosby went to jail. So even woke people defend him because it’s “racist” to get him while not focusing on white men who are worse first.

by Anonymousreply 32January 4, 2022 1:07 PM

“Pudding Pops! - The Bill Cosby Story!”

I thought he only received manual stimulation via the hand lotion. He wanted to believe he wasn’t cheating by only lotion rubs. Camille would be pissed! He always seemed to be focused on the lotion.

by Anonymousreply 33January 4, 2022 1:30 PM

R32 I would advocated for going after everyone who engaged in such conduct, not letting Cosby off the hook. And I doubt there are many men who were as prolific as Cosby was in terms of drugging and raping. It's astounding how often he did it.

by Anonymousreply 34January 4, 2022 3:19 PM

R24 Compelling and rich, bitch.

R25 Not to call all of his accusers liars but...what do you think a false allegation sounds like? If anything, many of their accusations ring false for likely the same reasons you think they're credible. Heavy on the details that can't be verified, vague on the details that one should be able to corroborate in order to have a credible allegation. And that still doesn't account for two very important points: 1) they waited decades to accuse this man of sexual assault; and 2) they have no evidence to corroborate their story. I know many victims don't come forward for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't mean that we should just slander and destroy someone's life because someone decided to wait to make this kind of accusation. And they had one very big reason to accuse him: money. The layperson might not understand this because the layperson isn't worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but it's clear what they were doing.

They wanted to come out, on camera, on a mass media platform, and make a clear accusation of sexual assault. Then, they were going to sit back and wait for Cosby to deny the allegation. Once he did that, they were going to turn around and sue him. Not for sexual assault, but for defamation of character because he branded them as liars. Then there's discovery where he might have to sit for discovery again, or even a possible trial. Of course, most celebrities would rather settle out of court than go through a very public trial, so they were going to sit back and wait for Cosby to just write them a check. That's why they lawyered up before they came forward and that's why they got Gloria Allred involved.

And please don't say there's no way they were going to do this when at least a dozen of them tried this exact tactic, and Gloria Allred asked him to sit aside $100M for his victims and have a group of retired judges decide who has the stronger case.

R28
That's bullshit. Cosby couldn't keep his fucking mouth shut.
He was being deposed.
He ADMITTED TO DRUGGING THESE WOMEN AND HAVING SEX WHILE THEY WERE UNCONSCIOUS.
No, he never admitted anything like that, drama queen.
And he was CONVICTED of rape by a jury and sent to jail.
He was neither charged nor convicted of rape.
These are FACTS. Tough shit if you don't like. This all happened
He was also released from prison and the prosecution was barred from refiling charged. If they had a slam dunk case, why was it over turned? And why did they need five additional witnesses who had no first hand knowledge of his case to testify in order to convict him?

by Anonymousreply 35January 4, 2022 10:24 PM

I know firsthand how creepy he is and have a mutual work friend who dated one of the accusers and it’s TRUE 1000000%! This sick cunt loved to assert power over women he knew couldn’t fight back. She’s still a shell of a human being unable to keep a decent relationship because of the trauma he inflicted. She’s also BLACK. So fuck off if it’s people claiming going after him is because of his race. No it’s because he’s a RAPIST who has zero respect or empathy and his own son hated him who wanted to distance himself from Cosby by becoming a decent man and look what happens to ENNIS… never bought that story and still think Cosby offed his own kid to keep him from exposing his decades of disgusting drugging and raping!

So far most of it is just recapping Cosby's career.

by Anonymousreply 40January 30, 2022 8:57 PM

I'm watching this now, "We Need to Talk About Bill Cosby". Born in 1980, I completely forgot how much Bill Cosby was part of my life. How much I adored "Picture Pages" and that marker he had. It's bitter sweet, this doc, because you get to see Cosby be the best and on the flip side the worst. I am always skeptical about these allegations against anyone, but I feel very convinced and it is much more shocking hearing it from the victims. As someone upthread said, R15 ?, I can imagine this hard for black people to come to terms with. He wasn't as much a comic but family man, when I was around but they played some of his comedy. I don't like the nice comedy, but his obsession with Spanish Fly was a big read flag that must have flown over everyone's head. Was Spanish Fly a big thing in the 70s?

by Anonymousreply 41February 3, 2022 1:48 AM

Eddie Murphy get a phone call from Bill Cosby, then Eddie calls Richard Pryor. This is still one of the funniest stand up bits I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 42February 3, 2022 6:33 PM

R38 You're wrong. The filmmaker doesn't soft pedal the accusations at all. In the least.

by Anonymousreply 43February 8, 2022 9:54 AM

r42 loved that. Considering Murphy's own predilections, that took a lot of balls. Pryor co-signing it probably protected him.

by Anonymousreply 44February 8, 2022 10:28 AM

I don’t like this. I get that there are s myriad of accusations against Cosby but at the end of the day if there’s barely any proof that’s all they are: accusations. This special, and the media in general, is doing an awful lot of insisting upon word of mouth. If you believe them, five, but there’s no broader argument or discussion to be had.

by Anonymousreply 45February 8, 2022 10:47 AM

Oh fuck off r45. literally DOZENS of women have come forward with the same story.

by Anonymousreply 46February 8, 2022 3:15 PM

(FIVE dozen)

by Anonymousreply 47February 8, 2022 3:33 PM

R46 Aside from the fact that that’s not actually true, you don’t find it odd that that many women would have assault accusations against one man and almost to a person none of them went to the police?

If he’s denied their accusations and they have no proof the contrary, why continue to argue the point? Even if it’s sixty of them, it’s he said/she said.

by Anonymousreply 48February 8, 2022 4:25 PM
Aside from the fact that that’s not actually true

Where the hell have you been? There are about 60 women who have come forward. Why didn't they call the police? Things were different in past decades. Many of them were afraid of retribution or that they wouldn't be believed. Cosby was a very powerful man.

by Anonymousreply 49February 8, 2022 7:10 PM
you don’t find it odd that that many women would have assault accusations against one man and almost to a person none of them went to the police?

Do you even know WTF things were like back in the day? Sexual assault was not taken seriously.

by Anonymousreply 50February 8, 2022 7:10 PM

R48 please stop it. Go read that New Yorker article, and watch some of the videos, if you refuse to watch the Showtime doc, which was excellent. There is ZERO doubt, and I mean, ZERO doubt that Cosby did exactly what he's accused of. I believe in a very high threshold to prove guilt, and there is no reasonable doubt. Cosby is guilty beyond ALL doubt.

by Anonymousreply 51February 10, 2022 5:59 AM

I mean Michael jackson fans have acted like he wasn't a disturbed pedophile since the 90s, Bill Cosby fans starting to do so as well won't be shocking.

by Anonymousreply 52February 10, 2022 6:03 AM

R49 I was responding to the specific point in the previous. I’m aware there have been a myriad of accusations. It is not true, however, that they had the exact same story. Which is part of the problem with this entire narrative. Time may be immemorial if we’re talking about rape. Does anybody really care that Bill Cosby might have grabbed a woman’s wrist or tried to kiss a woman at party or asked her to let him pet her hair in the 70s-80s? No. And the fact that people feel comfortable lending all of his accusers this unearned credibility because of the number of accusers but don’t hold it against any of them for not going to police just seems biased given the fact that they have no objective proof of their claims.

R50 That is not true at all. It might have been that people had a more specific understanding of it than what we have now. You probably couldn’t go back to a man’s house and have sex with him and then at some point after the fact say you think you might have been drugged and diff ddg by actually want to and still expect him to get arrested…but no, rape was still a crime back then.

R51 If that’s how you feel, fine. My point isn’t that all of them are lying, but that I don’t know how exact their accusations are to be given a stamp of approval. You can speculate all you want that you might have been drugged…doesn’t mean you were. You can speculate that you were taken advantage of sexually…doesn’t mean you were. And I don’t know how much I buy this idea that they were keenly aware of his fame and power in Hollywood but that wasn’t an impetus to sleep with him for any of them. Nor do I buy this idea that the only reason they didn’t go to the police is because they were scared. Some of you are willing to make excuses for every inconsistency in their stories or the overall narrative, but to me it feels like you’re only showing deference because of the severity of the accusation and not the credibility of the accuser. And given some of the people involved, I think that’s by design. Give this heart wrenching account if what this man did to you, speak at length about your feelings and thoughts, and let everybody else hold him accountable. And let everyone else run interference for you if someone questions your story.

by Anonymousreply 53February 10, 2022 11:57 AM

You're full of crap, 53. He did what he is accused of doing, and did it for 30 years, at least. I admired the man's career greatly, I listened to his LPs starting when I was about 6 years old. He's a repeat, serial rapist, who drugged his victims. Keep nattering on and on about how none of it has ever been proven. The same thing is true of EVERY crime committed where there are not disinterested eye witnesses, which is very, very few of crimes committed. You're wasting your time on this. He's guilty as sin and nothing is going to change on that score. He's toast.

by Anonymousreply 54February 10, 2022 12:34 PM

I'm a Black woman. I also know his youngest daughter Evin. These allegations have absolutely broken my heart. Bill Cosby meant a lot to me. The first and only fan letter I remember my baby sister writing was to Bill Cosby when the Cosby Show was on. She was about 6 and my mother helped her write it and mailed it for her. My family was like the Cosby family in many ways and my father has a physical resemblance to Bill Cosby, especially now that he has aged considerably. So this pains me, knowing how much Evin loves her dad and how much I adore mine - this would kill me if my father, my hero, did this to anyone. Especially since Cosby has 4 daughters.

My cousin knows one of Cosby's victims and this woman is not one of the women who came forward. She has gotten better after years of therapy and does not want to relive the experience. So think of how many women have still kept silent. He's a sick man and I cannot fathom how he has destroyed not only so many women but his own family and his legacy and achievements. This whole business makes me unbearably sad.

by Anonymousreply 55February 10, 2022 1:48 PM

R54 Just saying he’s guilty doesn’t make it so. And saying he’s toast is cute. None of these women gave case. So all they have are suckers like you who are willing to fall for the narrative.

by Anonymousreply 56February 11, 2022 1:31 PM

r56 is a complete idiot.

by Anonymousreply 57February 11, 2022 1:48 PM

R57 Which of course means I’m right.

by Anonymousreply 58February 11, 2022 2:48 PM

Bill, Camille or Phylicia must be posting on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 59February 11, 2022 3:11 PM

r58 you're dead wrong. You must also believe that Michael Jackson never fucked all those boys.

by Anonymousreply 60February 11, 2022 6:45 PM

I watched it, and my take away was that there was an agenda here: to telegraph that Coby's "okay, and an elder we should defend and forgive" while balancing the very, VERY thin facade of being scornful and... "concerned". That's bullshit. They knew exactly what the purpose of this bullshit "documentary" was about, and it wasn't to expose Bill Cosby for what he is/was, but to help pave a path to his public redemption.

I can't figure out for the life of me WHAT the motivation was or why the host/director, who makes his living race trolling lowbrow TV shows, would want us to sense empathy/sympathy for Cosby. I just can't come up with a reason why. Can anyone else? Hmmmm, baffled.

by Anonymousreply 61February 11, 2022 6:57 PM

What Cosby did to those women was monstrous

by Anonymousreply 62February 11, 2022 7:10 PM

R60 He stood trial and was acquitted. What I "believe" is irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 63February 12, 2022 8:14 PM

Then you're an idiot r63. MJ definitely molested those boys the evidence and firsthand accounts are overwhelming even if the jury were morons.

by Anonymousreply 64February 12, 2022 8:22 PM

There are people who are truly stupid enough to believe Bill Cosby didn't drug and rape women. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 65February 12, 2022 8:24 PM

Bill Cosby did it, of course he did it. I just don't care that he did it. Mainly because the women he did it to, didn't care enough to come forward until it no longer mattered or the checks stopped (take your pick). If you get assaulted and don't do the right thing and report it and sit silent as other get assaulted, you're no hero and certainly no victim.

by Anonymousreply 66February 12, 2022 8:30 PM

FFS r66 you don't realize how many people don't report sexual assault for a variety of reasons? It can be very complicated. Also, Cosby was a very influential person and they feared retaliation. If you watched the doc it goes into detail about this.
