The films of Éric Rohmer
Any other fans?
I just saw Claire’s Knee streaming and feel like an idiot for leaving it so long as I have owned the Criterion box set of Six Moral Tales for 15 years.
It’s one of the best films I have seen. I also took a quick look at the reviews of the films and came across Roger Ebert’s piece. Ebert is one of that generation of intellectual Americans so in love with European cinematic culture (hey, who isn’t?) that in his review he so fantasises about living the life of the worldly, über-French Jean-Claude Brialy character and doesn’t see Rohmer’s quiet excoriation of his bourgeois entitlement.

You're kidding, right?

No, they are mostly boring, with people smoking and talking inanely. His movies might be cute before Catherine Breillat burst onto the scene.

Noah Baumbach named his son with Jennifer Jason Leigh “Rohmer”. But I won’t hold that against Eric Rohmer himself.

I watched "My Night at Maude's" recently. I enjoyed the atmosphere of wintry Clermont-Ferrand, but did not find the dialogues (and Rohmer films are nothing but dialogue) particularly witty, or the characters and their relationships particularly interesting.

My favorite Rohmer is the less famous Marquise d'O in German with Bruno Ganz as the Russian aristocrat who rapes an unconscious German aristocrat and tries to make amends. Loved Ganz and he never got the recognition he deserved.

The Criterion Channel is featuring French New Wave films this month, and Rohmer was the only director whose films I have never seen (I've enjoyed those by Godard, Truffaut, and Demy).

I started seeing his movies as a teen with my mother in the 80s . I have seen everyone since then. Loved his movies . I was sad when I heard he died.

He’s not my favorite but I love some of his films. They’re atmospheric and aesthetic heavy. I think my favorite is My Night at Maud’s, but I also like The Green Ray, Love in the Afternoon, The Aviator’s Wife and Pauline at the Beach.

I liked The Bakery Girl of Parc Monceau a lot when I saw it recently.
I miss those short, black & white European films of the 60s with cute characters and a bit of artsy photography.
