Someone gave me a box of the Peanut Brittle. It is so fucking delicious.
See’s Candies

See you soon OP.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 2, 2022 3:07 AM |
Yeah, the See's peanut brittle is surprisingly delicious & buttery. And I don't even like peanuts or brittle candy. You gotta eat it fast, though. I think it can get less crunchy (depending on the humidity).
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 2, 2022 3:08 AM |
See’s is the bee’s knees, and the cat’s pyjamas. For American candies; it’s unparalleled.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 2, 2022 3:21 AM |
Lord&Taylor here in NY would carry it around Christmas time. I would always pick up a box or two because of the reputation. Surprised they haven't opened a store or two here on the east coast.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 2, 2022 3:33 AM |
I like their butterscotch. It’s the closest I’ve found to the Callard and Bowser butterscotch I used to love that disappeared many years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 2, 2022 3:33 AM |
See's is old school, but honestly it's much better than Godiva. More buttery and flavor, unlike Godiva which is all about marketing and status.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 2, 2022 3:37 AM |
I love the Build a Box option, or whatever it's called, that allows you to pick up to 10 different varieties of assorted chocolates to include in your box.
I prefer dark chocolates with cream centers, so there are a lot of choices from which to pick.
And Sees is way better than the flavorless Godiva.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 2, 2022 3:48 AM |
Okay -I am the world's biggest chocoholic, and I absolutely love See's -But what's with all the threads about it lately on Datalounge?? I'd hate to see this place become full of de facto ads, even for products that I love.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 2, 2022 4:33 AM |
I love it.
I'm not sure why giving candy or even homemade baked goods as gifts over the holidays has sort of fallen out of fashion or whatever. I love getting that those sorts of things as gifts. I'd never buy peanut brittle at random, or bake for myself, but if someone gives it to me as a gift, I will absolutely eat and enjoy it.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 2, 2022 4:36 AM |
Fun Fact, the original Sees factory in LA is the same one that I love Lucy used as their inspiration for the famous chocolate episode.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 2, 2022 4:40 AM |
See's is way, way too sweet. Distinctly American junk food.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 2, 2022 5:10 AM |
We’re from the Bat Area & every time an out of state relative visited, on the last day of their trip they’d invariably make a run to See’s to buy tons of candy to take home (pre-internet). As a kid I didn’t like See’s, but as an adult I agree it’s the best, superior to Godiva. My favorite is their truffles. But really, any of their candy is great.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 2, 2022 6:15 AM |
I love Sees . When you walk in the store you’re transported back in time. That clean chocolatee fragrance, thé way the candy boxes, suckers, various assorted chocolate rabbits or Santa’s are displayed.
And the people who work there always seem happy. Why wouldn’t they be? And the free samples… always . Sometimes I go there to buy two pieces and I still get a free sample .
When I was in college , my Dad gave me a pound box of Bordeaux — my favorite. I think he gave it to me for no reason .

It's candy, it's supposed to be sweet and ALL CANDY IS JUNK FOOD. What planet do you live on? It's no sweeter than Belgium chocolate I have tasted.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 2, 2022 8:49 AM |
I drive by the Sees factory five times a week. I have not stopped in there for a year because I have no control.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 2, 2022 9:09 AM |
I drive by that place all the time too. I was not aware that you can actually go inside that one.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 2, 2022 9:11 AM |
Littlejohn’s in the farmers market in the Grove in LA is really good too. I love their toffee! And they ship!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 2, 2022 9:11 AM |
R17 it’s the place on La Cienega. They have a small retail area in front.

[quote] It's candy, it's supposed to be sweet and ALL CANDY IS JUNK FOOD.
No, it’s not! I have candy that is not sweet, vegan, meat-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, fat-free, taste-free, and good for you, made from cocoa nibs and carob chips. It’s the exact opposite of junk food.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 2, 2022 9:39 AM |
R9 One does get just an itsy-bitsy suspicious, doesn't one.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 2, 2022 9:54 AM |
I've never had it, but it sounds tasty.
Instead I've managed to work my way through an entire tub of Quality Street in less than a week and I have another tub of that and Celebrations left. I can't even say "the diet starts next year!" now.
Oh well, pass me the chocolate.

Does that candy also provide immunity from COVID?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 2, 2022 12:00 PM |
R23 Yes, but each box only provides two weeks' immunity. Better to wait for the version that provides one week's.

From? Oh dear.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 2, 2022 12:10 PM |
It's always a Sees-a-palooza on DL during the holidays, r9.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 2, 2022 12:11 PM |
Elder Gay memory. During the summer months, they ceased making chocolates. All you could buy were peanut brittle and caramels...BUT... they came packed in the cutest little tin sand pails with a shovel. As a child, I got one every summer before we went on our Newport Beach vacation.
I also got a one pound box and a bunch of books for Christmas. I spent the rest of Christmas day in my room reading and eating chocolates. I still have many of the books and they all have chocolate fingerprints on at least one page.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 2, 2022 12:16 PM |
I love the raspberry cream ones!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 2, 2022 5:10 PM |
I love Quality Street chocolates too. Also love Sees. Still miss Fannie Mae.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 6, 2022 9:49 PM |
I get my partner the key lime truffles from Sees for Christmas every year. They’re great with coffee.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 6, 2022 9:56 PM |
Just the other day I finished the box I got as a Christmas present from a friend in California. Sigh.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 6, 2022 10:05 PM |
Are all the holiday candies on sale now? They also have boxes with red Christmas wrapping paper they can’t sell now. How many % off?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 6, 2022 10:07 PM |
Sees is the best. They mixed nuts are super delicious, too. I get boxes of nuts and chews. They are a holiday tradition.
When I was a kid my friend's aunt worked in the Sees factory in South San Francisco. I got to go inside the factory once. All white with black accents as you can imagine, with a store at the front of the building.
Sadly, I've already eaten all my Sees Christmas candy.

R 27:
Lovely memory. I might have one of those little pails too. I have to look. My Dad loved golf . My sisters and I got him a small leather black and white golf bag with the sees logo, with sees suckers inside. I still have it.
In my mind, we’re snuggled up on a chilly night with a big box of Sees candies, mugs of steaming coffee, just sharing the sweetness of our chocolate filled memories , holding hands, under a warm quilt, in front of a fireplace, listening to the crashing waves on Malibu.

-My company badge provides me with a 10% discount on See's prepacked candy.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 6, 2022 10:29 PM |
Pre-packed? What do you get in the pre-pack?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 6, 2022 10:37 PM |
R36 there is a section of the store that has prepackaged "favorites" such as the soft center box, nuts and chews box, popular candies such as milk chocolate balls or marshmallow chocolate treats, seasonally wrapped items, bagged items like butterscotch squares, polar bear paws, boxes of brittles, molasses chips, krispys, mints... think pre-bagged or pre-wrapped in a box.
The "pick it yourself" boxes or bags, that a sales person hand picks per your specifications are not discounted.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 6, 2022 10:46 PM |
What are Polar Bear Paws?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 6, 2022 10:53 PM |
R38 it's a white chocolate peanut turtle, essentially. Delicious.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 6, 2022 10:54 PM |
They used to make a mint dark chocolate marshmallow thingie. Haven't seen that piece since.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 6, 2022 10:55 PM |
The white chocolate thing looks gross. It’s not even chocolate.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 6, 2022 11:25 PM |
R5, there is a New York store. In the Village on West 8th Street, just east of Sixth Avenue.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 6, 2022 11:36 PM |
You can order Sees online.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 7, 2022 12:25 AM |
R42 is right. I’ve been in the Manhattan store several times.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 7, 2022 12:33 AM |
Godiva is absolute shit. Dove makes better chocolate than these overpriced Godiva chocolates. I have yet to try See’s chocolate since we don’t have any stores that carry it in the DC metro area.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 7, 2022 12:34 AM |
I tried Sees for the first time at LAX (I fly fat). It tasted no different than Russell Stover (in other words, cheap). I bet it was great back in the old days, but I don’t get the hype.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 7, 2022 12:37 AM |
godiva closed all their retail locations in the us after covid hit. great marketing. inferior products
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 7, 2022 12:50 AM |
Love See's candies. These are my favorites:
1. Scotchmallow.
2. Rocky road.
3. Raspberry cream (dark chocolate).
4. Pecan log. (This one's very sweet.)
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 7, 2022 1:08 AM |
I've been considering ordering one of those custom boxes on the See's website since there are so many good reviews. I noticed a local gourmet store was selling individual See's candy bars so I bought one. I have to say that IMO it's way better than Godiva or other chocolates that I've tried.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 27, 2022 2:24 PM |
Godiva is really awful for the price. It's all got that same flavor like they added plastic to it. Which they probably did.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 27, 2022 2:26 PM |
Godiva is overpriced, overrated, waxy crap.
I find a lot of the offerings at See's to be too sweet, but their version of milk chocolate turtles ("pecan buds") is absolute heaven. They're rich-tasting and light, but not sickeningly sweet, so it's easy to eat a lot of them in one sitting.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 27, 2022 2:41 PM |
As noted above, the See’s store in Manhattan is on W8, just east of 6th Ave. Personally I prefer LiLac chocolates. Great truffles and I could devour a box of the French mints in a sitting.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 27, 2022 2:52 PM |
R52, did LiLac move from their Manhattan location on Hudson Street/8th Avenue?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 27, 2022 2:58 PM |
And when you shop at a See's Candy store, you are given a free, full-size piece of candy. If it's a kind you don't like you can ask for another kind.
For R6, unless Russell Stover has improved, See's Candies are infinitely better. They haven't cheapened up or changed their recipes.
Once I decided to give my "signature blend" of all my favorite See's candies, which I thought of as being all the best varieties, but I found out that people really miss when their favorites were not included, so I never did that again.

(R53) Lilac isn’t on 8th and Hudson. They have a shop on Greenwich just west of 7th Ave South. Also shops in Grand Central Station and Chelsea Market.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 27, 2022 6:26 PM |
Lilac used to be on Christopher Street years ago.
Is the store on Bleecker Street (in that stretch between 6th Ave and LaGuardia) still open?
