What will be used to measure a movie’s popularity without box office grosses?
There has to be some way to compare the popularity of a movie opening in theaters, hybrid (theaters + streaming), or streaming only.
The music biz figured out how to compare physical albums + electronic + streaming.
I can’t know if I like it if I don’t know it’s popular!

Rotten Tomatoes - Where the opinions of 5,000 fat morons are weighted equally and combined to tell you what movies you should see.

I still say concert ticket sales should be used to study an artists popularity in music

R2 But with ticket wholesalers and TicketMaster fucking up the numbers, how will we ever get a realistic count?
Also, plenty of people love musicians but don't attend their concerts for one reason or another. Concerts are expensive, or undesirable for some, and not all artists do concerts. Some popular artists are dead!

R3 I don’t think ticket sales numbers get fucked up
Nothing speaks to an artists popularity more than millions of people all over the world willing to buy tickets to see you live, it’s the same method used to gauge a Broadway shows popularity
If anything records sales and streaming in particular are messed with by record labels

What about scalpers and ticket bots, R2?

I'm one of those people, R3. I don't like crowds so I avoid concerts at stadiums and arenas and stick to shows at small venue, I've missed out on seeing bands I love (like Depeche Mode) because they're an arena band.

The billboard charts have become a fucking joke. So whatever Billboard is doing don’t follow that.

The Datalounge failure troll must be going nuts from the lack of information. How will he know what to pronounce a bomb?
Maybe this is for the best. Amazon and Netflix dont even report the box office revenue when they have a movie in theaters. They are paying a flat fee for the rental and get to keep all the revenue. If the theater sells popcorn and drinks they keep the money. Maybe people will just watch what they want to watch instead of worrying about what is popular or has legs. After all, Netflix has been cancelling shows after 3 seasons even when they have good ratings.
