Background noise for sleeping

Some prefer silence. Some do not. I used to use podcasts but have recently discovered old episodes of Dateline. True crime is a great soporific

Yours?.

I've become increasingly sensitive to any noise at all when I sleep.

Now I can't sleep -- even a nap -- without earplugs that cancel nearly all noise, and a white noise machine, just to be safe.

I just fall asleep while watching a movie or tv show and let it run until the power save function of my tv kicks in. Could be anything.

Just a pedestal fan. In the summer, it serves two purposes: cool me off and provide white noise. I use it in the winter too, but I point it away from me. That way I can enjoy the white noise without worrying about being caught in the draft.

I'm like R1, but I hate "white noise." I've recently discovered that "brown noise" is great for me, though. I think I first learned about the different "colors" of noise here on the DL.

I use audiobooks. Right now I have several Jeeves and Wooster that I got for free on Audible or I check them out from the library.. Rapid banter, absurd and easy to ignore as I drift off.

by Anonymousreply 5January 1, 2022 4:30 PM

Doesn't matter. I can sleep through almost anything - I will wake up for some unusual sound, but can go back to sleep in seconds.

by Anonymousreply 6January 1, 2022 4:46 PM

I'm gay, so "pink noise" it is.

Seriously, though, as a budding eldergay, I have tinnitus, so complete silence makes me focus on the omnipresent, high-pitched ringing in my ears.

I have a small box (from CVS, but sure they're available everywhere) that emits a quiet, constant sound sufficient to mask my ear-ringing. You would hardly notice it. But I swear by it.

The creepy Q loon guy who owns the house next door turned it into a rental three years ago, and I've had to wear earplugs to sleep ever since. The current family there is nice enough but has some drug dealer friend or relative with a huge gold SUV that he blasts the stereo in constantly. The other day he was doing it at 3:45AM.

So I've gotten to where I have ear plugs and white noise from a filter all the time now, and sometimes even more white noise from an app. Before that, it was just a filter and that was all the noise I needed.

My partner has tinnitus r7, I'll tell him to check into that, thanks for mentioning it.

by Anonymousreply 9January 1, 2022 5:14 PM

R9: It's about the size of a baseball (but it's a cube). Easy to travel with, too.

...and priced with the eldergays of the world in mind.

Mannix, Cannon, Barnaby Jones.

I have a fan going (just like Kathy Hilton) and usually listen to an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

It's all in his head!

by Anonymousreply 13January 1, 2022 5:48 PM

I fall asleep with MeTV on in the background. Nothing better than waking up at 3 AM to pee and seeing Cannon on my 50 inch screen.

[quote]It's all in his head!

It's the result of damage to nerves and hair cells in his ears, r13.

Since you singled me out when others on this thread have mentioned tinnitus before I did, I'll assume you're being a jackass on purpose because you're lonely and wanted a response. So, here ya go: a response. Enjoy.

My snoring Boston Terrier

by Anonymousreply 17January 1, 2022 6:37 PM

I alternate between I using my Calm app to listen to sleep stories, and turning on reruns of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" on Pluto TV.

by Anonymousreply 18January 1, 2022 7:53 PM

Ugh. Disregard the second "I" in that post. Sorry!

by Anonymousreply 19January 1, 2022 7:54 PM

Yeah, I have a fan as well. It helps me fall asleep plus it drowns out my mothers snoring in the next room.

Of course it keeps me cool since I tend to sleep hot.

R3 crystallized my thoughts eloquently.

Have used a white noise machine for decades + fan during hot weather
