Betty white and lucille ball

I am not American. Were they in the same era ? Did they know each other ?

by Anonymousreply 46January 4, 2022 11:35 AM

I guess your country has expelled Google…

And capitalization, R1.

by Anonymousreply 3December 31, 2021 11:48 PM

Lucille was Betty’s great grandfather OP.

by Anonymousreply 4December 31, 2021 11:49 PM

Betty looked up to her as she preceded her a bit. They were about 11 years apart in age, but they knew each other.

Lucy wanted one of those sexy, sassy shows like Three's Company or The Golden Girls. But all she got was the juvenile Life With Lucy.

Then she died.

by Anonymousreply 6December 31, 2021 11:57 PM

Eve Harrington and Margo Channing.

by Anonymousreply 7January 1, 2022 12:01 AM

Lucy and Betty had radio shows at roughly the same time in the late 1940s, and they both had sitcoms centering on a husband and wife pair in those early days of television.

by Anonymousreply 8January 1, 2022 12:03 AM

r6 I thought Lucille objected to The Golden Girls' off-color humor

by Anonymousreply 9January 1, 2022 2:52 PM

betty, Lucille, Carole (and bert convoy)

Lucy seems sort of slow

by Anonymousreply 11January 1, 2022 5:08 PM

Who would have thought back then that Betty would end up the bigger, more universally loved icon? It’s what happens when one knows how to pivot expertly and adapt her comedy to the times while the other refuses to change her brand of comedy for 40 years.

by Anonymousreply 12January 1, 2022 5:19 PM

"Lucy seems sort of slow "

She was probably sort of drunk

by Anonymousreply 13January 1, 2022 5:49 PM

R9- I know that Lucille Ball objected to All In The Family and wanted it taken off the air.

by Anonymousreply 14January 1, 2022 5:58 PM

Lucy was my FAAAAAN!

Knew each other and at each other’s throats constantly. It wasn’t pretty.

A little perspective please, even in the immediate aftermath of this great tragedy. In the history of television, Betty White - whom I loved - is looking up, way up, to Lucille Ball. As she is to Mary Tyler Moore. And to Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

by Anonymousreply 17January 1, 2022 8:48 PM

^^Crack is whack.

R11 To be fair, Lucy's ass was old here (and probably a little drunk too). She would have been about 76 in this clip (a year before she died). Channing was the next oldest at 67. White and Martin were 66. Convy was the baby of the bunch at 53.

Side Note: I see why the Golden Girls were GAGA over Bert Convy. He was pretty fine!

White probably succeeded MTM during her lifetime and, at the very least, had much more exposure leading up to her death than the increasingly frail( and conservative) Moore. As a result White was probably better known among the younger generation. Moore was iconic, but she was never a "national treasure" like Betty.

Without a doubt, White had a better reputation than Ball, although Lucille was also a business woman and there was some discussion a while back about White's behaviour towards her step-children.

Both Ball and White were supportive of the gay community, and MTM spoke out against the Briggs initiative in the 1970's.

by Anonymousreply 21January 3, 2022 11:14 AM

Betty for sure

by Anonymousreply 22January 3, 2022 12:47 PM

Puhleeze, Lucy practically invented tv. Some DLers are like tweenish girls who think the greatest band/singer is whomever is hot at the moment., whomever is top of mind.

by Anonymousreply 23January 3, 2022 1:04 PM

Betty was in everyone's era.

by Anonymousreply 24January 3, 2022 1:06 PM

Ball was a ball

by Anonymousreply 25January 3, 2022 1:06 PM

[quote] Betty was in everyone's era.

Do you believe the history of television is nigh? If you don't, Betty will be as remembered by future generations much like Johnny Carson is(n't).

by Anonymousreply 26January 3, 2022 1:16 PM

OP = Darfur Orphan, who must have found a grain of rice to have the energy to post this thread.

But there's no excuse for the poor capitalization.

Oh, dear. Oh, dear. Oh, dear.

[quote]Do you believe the history of television is nigh?

oh, dear

one, I've got punctuation. Two, the phrase quoted is nonsense, bad usage, crap

by Anonymousreply 31January 3, 2022 1:45 PM

R26, What?? I did use the past tense "was," not the future "will be."

Capisce?

by Anonymousreply 32January 3, 2022 2:29 PM

R32, context is key. Your post was in the context of which of these two grand dames of television will be better remembered in the overall history of television.

by Anonymousreply 33January 3, 2022 3:02 PM

those who forget history will be condemned to repeat it

by Anonymousreply 34January 3, 2022 3:03 PM

[quote]betty, Lucille, Carole

CAROLE? Carole King?

by Anonymousreply 35January 3, 2022 3:12 PM

R33, Try again...not.

The CONTEXT IS THE OP.

The OP asks: "Were they [Betty White and Lucille Ball] in the same era?"

My post r26---which references no numbered post and thus is understood to refer to the OP---"answers" that.

NOW capisce??

by Anonymousreply 36January 3, 2022 5:03 PM

Correction: I mean my post r24.

BUT to answer within YOUR context, r33:

It is and has been eminently obvious that Lucille Ball, who has been both the star and the subject of movies big screen and small, will be remembered as the icon she is.

Betty White, though a staple of Sit-coms as a superb ensemble eactress, was not (but for one long-ago and brief show) their main star. It's highly doubtful that she will be the subject of a movie. She has no memorable physical attributes, such as Lucy's red hair. No memorable schtick, like Lucy's "Waaaah!"

I would say that BW is known for ephemeral one-liners, whereas LB is known for her shows, episodes, and even particular scenes.

Just because they were women in television doesn't mean they merit any head to head comparison.

by Anonymousreply 37January 3, 2022 5:19 PM

R36 et al., you were right & I was wrong. My apologies.

by Anonymousreply 38January 3, 2022 6:23 PM

Betty and Lucille were friends. And their mothers were actually close friends. Both had moved to California when their daughters became well known.

by Anonymousreply 39January 3, 2022 6:36 PM

[quote] one, I've got punctuation.

But nothing about capitalization? And what punctuation? How about an exclamation point of a period at least?

[quote]Two, the phrase quoted is nonsense, bad usage, crap

On this we can agree, except it would appear your period key broke.

by Anonymousreply 40January 3, 2022 8:06 PM

[quoteBut nothing about capitalization? And what punctuation? How about an exclamation point of a period at least?

only a comma is necessary and as far as capitalization, how's this:

FUCK YOU

by Anonymousreply 41January 4, 2022 2:32 AM

Only on DL does a catfight break out about grammar and punctuations -- in a Betty White and Lucille Ball thread, no less!

by Anonymousreply 42January 4, 2022 2:39 AM

if pasta and cake baking can do it, BETTY WHITE CAN DO IT
