What does 7-day trial mean exactly? Who's in the wrong here?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 31, 2021 9:53 PM |
24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 = 7 days

If they're anything like airbnb they use the international dateline for all of their dates.

Do you mind, OP? Betty White is DEAD. We don't have the time or energy for this right now.
Signed for a free 7-day trial of a streaming service
You don’t feel comfortable naming the porn site?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 31, 2021 8:31 PM |
7 days was yesterday.
Trials run from 12:00AM on day of sign-up until 11:59PM on the last day.

The OP is referring to the rumour that she off'd herself when she heard she was charged for her 7-day trial.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 31, 2021 8:32 PM |
They're right and you're wrong. Sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 31, 2021 8:34 PM |
OP, check the fine print on the offer. Does it specify seven "calendar" days? If not, and it's unclear, you have a case. Any ambiguity defaults to your benefit.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 31, 2021 8:35 PM |
You have miscalculated. Enjoy your experience beyond the trial. They are correct.

OP? Does the word "torrent" mean anything to you?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 31, 2021 8:42 PM |
R10 Please note that they will be laughing as you continue to dispute your error.

OP, tell your credit card company you are disputing the charge.

Trial periods don't count hours, they count days. You could've signed up at 11:59pm and it would've counted as day 1.
If you signed up on the 24th, that's day 1, 25th is day 2, 26th is day 3, 27th is day 4, 28th is day 5, 29th is day 6 and then 30th is day 7. And on the 30th you have until 11:59pm to cancel it, past midnight, it's the 31st and it counts as day 8, meaning it's the first day post trial.
You're not in the right. All this will amount to will be a constant back and forth of them telling you the same thing over and over again while you insist you're right, when you're not. Unless their contracts specify that it's 168 hours counting from the moment you create an account, you don't have a case.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 31, 2021 8:55 PM |
Oh and forgot to add. You should've checked somewhere like a user profile page or user settings, because when you're doing a free trial period, it always says when it ends. I remember when I got Netflix and got the first month free, and in my account info, where things like billing address and such are, it also stated when the free trial ended. And I'm almost certain Spotify also had that.
So if they do have some type of page that displays that type of info, which they likely do, they can literally push the fault to you for not looking at your settings.

Wrong, R121. It's up to the contract to specify it is calendar days.
7-day trial
Interesting that they didn't make it a 168-hour trial. They must have been counting calendar days and not hours.

OP is right, the terms of service for RiverTV are not specific about what constitutes 7 days.
Most streaming services define 7 days. Hulu says: "You must cancel your subscription prior to 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on the day before your next recurring billing date in order to avoid being charged."
However, RiverTV's sign-up page tells you when your first payment is due so OP's email confirmation should have included this information as well.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 31, 2021 9:11 PM |
OP is incorrect
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 31, 2021 9:12 PM |
OP you are in the wrong, but hopefully it is just a month-by-month subscription.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 31, 2021 9:13 PM |
R23 It does that by saying it's a 7 day trial. For example, New Years is celebrated at midnight, it's not celebrated on January 1st at sunrise. When you look at your phone or computer, if you see it's past midnight, it'll say the date of the following day, the device doesn't wait until sunrise to change the date, because the day has ended at 11:59pm, and at midnight it's a new day.
R25 So basically OP didn't bother reading the info that was given to him.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 31, 2021 9:15 PM |
And they say there are no stupid questions. OP has two right there in the title of this thread.

You're not wrong for being annoyed. but you learned an important lesson about billing in this day and age.
1) Pretty much any service you sign up for as a trial will allow you to immediately cancel--and the account will still work for amount of days. Whether its ONLYFANS, Hulu, Netflix, Apple, any service with a free time frame will allow you to cancel minutes after you sign up with full access to content until the trial is up. Exception to this would be multi-month freebies. So I got Paramount+ for a year free, had to put a payment source in and they will bill me for month 13. Use your calendar as a reminder for this stuff.
2) Billing for digital services is much less flexible than other types of companies in terms of refunds. Normal companies just refund when a customer is unhappy. With digital services, not so much. So dont waste your energy after you get a NO if the amount isnt ridiculous

January 7 is the 8th day after December 31 meaning 7 days are free and you are charged on the 8th day.
December 31 is the 8th day after December 24 meaning 7 days are free and you are charged on the 8th day.
[italic]Most[/italic] of my automatic payments are debited from my account before 6AM, I'm assuming RiverTV charged you in the early hours of the day today, the 8th day, and not yesterday, OP. Depending on how long it takes your bank/credit card company to process payments, your account should show either a payment that was made yesterday or a pending charge for a debit made today. If they charged you yesterday they charged you early, if they charged you today it's because you didn't cancel before 11:59PM on the 7th day.
