Why isn't Robyn bigger in the US?

I can't say I know one person who actively dislikes Robyn. Everyone I know either doesn't really know her or LOVES her. I wonder why she's not bigger over here.

I think it might be because she isn't sexy (as far as her brand is concerned) and her vaguely bisexual vibe. It might be why Pink isn't as big here as she should be even though Pink is pretty popular.

It is odd that she reached her peak popularity during her very pop-y 'Show Me Love' phase decades ago.

cheese.

her sound was dated when she broke thru the u.s. mainstream, so it didn't vibe as well with u.s. mainstream that was moving in another direction when it came to female vocalists.

as to Pink - that was more because she was pitted against the disney brats plus having started out with rnb and the direction the studios wanted her to go... and she goes over that story frequently - her shift in music and creative control set her back professionally. . . outside of industry bs, there were a lot of things, personal fuckups, in early mainstream break thru which could be summed up as immaturity, needing that extra time to grow up and find herself. it really wasn't until she started working with Linda Perry that she became the pink we recognize today.. and of course, she frequently talks about that drama too.

Another mystery is Anastacia. I wonder why she was never huge in the US

Robyn Leach has always been a favorite in America! But maybe not anymore since he’s changed his pronouns.

by Anonymousreply 4December 31, 2021 8:36 AM

Why do you start this thread every 6 months? She just wasn't, okay?

by Anonymousreply 5December 31, 2021 8:54 AM

Squinchy face, bad fashion.

I would have happily traded her brief period of US notoriety for one for Roisin Murphy.

by Anonymousreply 6December 31, 2021 9:08 AM

Huh teefs.

by Anonymousreply 7December 31, 2021 10:51 AM

R5 What are you talking about? I've never made this thread before,

by Anonymousreply 8December 31, 2021 6:04 PM

Holy shit, I just found she did a track with Snoop Dog.

I love her collaborations with Royksopp

by Anonymousreply 9December 31, 2021 7:59 PM

I wouldn't know about her if it weren't for Rupaul.

She was a guest on What's The Tee with he and Michelle. I never had heard of her before that.

I love the Body Talk albums and thought Honey was just ok. She doesn't release music often enough anymore so I forget about her.

by Anonymousreply 11December 31, 2021 8:05 PM

Because ugly face and small boobs.

Every couple months, we have a Robyn troll who slips her name into a thread somehow; i.e. (just in the past 6 months, this thread and):

"calling all Robyn fans!"

"Robyn's book about Whitney"

There's been another one that pops about best songs of the 80s with her as one of the poll choices.

She wasn't well-liked, popular or well-publicized here in the U.S. Stop trying to make Robyn happen.

by Anonymousreply 13December 31, 2021 8:14 PM

She peaked in the 90s.

Dancing on my own is one of my favorite songs, but I prefer the gay version by Calum Scott. I cried when I first watched the video.

She really should be bigger - I agree - so much great music

by Anonymousreply 16December 31, 2021 8:37 PM

R10 Your grammar is atrocious.

with he and Michelle

Robyn is hardly a household name in Europe. She had a No.1 here in the UK (with Kleerup) with With Every Heartbeat and Bodytalk was lauded by critics, but her main fanbase outside of Scandinavia is still very much gay.

I've been to see her live a couple of times in London and the audience was like a Pride parade.

by Anonymousreply 18December 31, 2021 8:40 PM

She's not THAT great - certainly not someone who was destined to be big anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 19December 31, 2021 9:21 PM

Fuck Robyn. She's got a stupid "y" in her name when an "i" would suffice.
