I've been watching Reba on Hulu. It is a good background show to work from home to. I searched DL and there wasn't a post about it. It is set in Houston (my city), but not really about Houston.
What are your thoughts?

I couldn't get past her voice , she seems like she's made for a sitcom, however. I think you have to have cooked noodles for brains to really be a sitcom star.

Steve Howey and Melissa Peterman made that show for me.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 29, 2021 3:38 PM |
Melissa Peterson and the actors who played Reba’s ex-husband and son-in-law were funny, the daughters (especially the younger anorexic one) were bland. Reba learned from Cybill’s mistakes and let herself play the straight guy to the more ridiculous supporting characters.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 29, 2021 3:38 PM |
Reba was not a particularly good actress when this show started but she got better as it went along. The actress who played the new wife of Reba’s ex-husband was a hoot as was Reba’s son-in-law.

Melissa Peterman is funny on this show.

Reba has great facial expressions though.

Love that show!

Vance and Barbara Jean are the real stars of this show! It got bittersweet towards the end when Reba realizes that BJ is in fact her best friend. I liked Cheyenne being an alkie too, as I am also in recovery. Pale bitchy daughter and expendable ugly kid were not neccesary or likable and how DID Reba and her blond hubby have that young kid with such odd coloring?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 16, 2022 11:31 PM |
I had the biggest crush on Van.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 16, 2022 11:45 PM |
Shit, did I say Vance? I meant Van. Yes, R9 because Van was incredibly hot and funny and tall. I miss him in shows.

I love this show... I watch it daily on hallmark

I like her but I hate that twang in her voice.

King of the Hill, this, Schitt's Creek, The Goldbergs, Futurama and Seinfeld are all my go to comfort shows, all but Seinfeld are on Hulu so it's pretty convenient.

Decided to watch it years ago just to see what is was about and was pleasantly surprised. Steve Howey was terrific as the idiot son-in-law, along with the daughter who played his young airhead wife. Many progressive plots for a show helmed by a famous singer from the conservative county music area.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 17, 2022 12:19 AM |
Yeah, I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Reba vs. Barbara Jean made the show for me. The wisecracking daughter and boy-without-traits were a bit by the book, but I guess it helped to focus on the important characters. The show's last season was a dud, and I pretend it doesn't exist. That's when Barbara Jean discovered that Brock was holding her back and separated from him to get a career. Unfortunately she also separated from humor and stopped being funny. Other than that: Great comfort food.

Apologies, OP, I read the headline about her show too quickly, as being "Rehab."
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 17, 2022 1:00 AM |
Reba is much funnier than any of the sitcoms on tv today.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 17, 2022 1:09 AM |
I watched it during its original run. It was good, and I needed it at the time. Those years were a low, low point for me and I clung to every minute of escape I could find.
Unfortunately, it makes watching a rerun of a show like Reba bittersweet. I’ll stumble across it every so often, watch for a bit and then my mind wanders to what to was going on with me at the time. I can’t really enjoy TV or songs from around then anymore, but I loved them at the time.

If it had been on CBS on its Monday comedy line-up with Everybody Loves Raymond, it would've been a top 10 show.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 17, 2022 1:35 AM |
It's much funnier and less unintentionally corny than Everybody Loves Raymond.

Peterson is a regular on Young Sheldon and her acting is always superior. Love her in anything. It was nice to see Reeb guest on YS too.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 17, 2022 1:49 AM |
Melissa Peterman plays that type of character well, but she's done it to death.
She was also on that show Baby Daddy with DL fav Derek Theler, all 6'5" of him.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 17, 2022 2:04 AM |
Because I wasn't expecting much from it, I actually ending up enjoying it. Reba was a good reactor, and wisely took the straightman role. A little of Barbara Jean went a long way. Since I popped in and out of the show over the years, I was shocked to see the big weight loss in Petersen. Was that a plot point in the show, or was it never mentioned? I hate to use stereotypes, but fat Barbara Jean was funnier.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 17, 2022 2:38 AM |
It was a plot point R27, she lost a lot of weight and Brock became jealous of her trainer I think and that she was able to go out and get hit on.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 17, 2022 2:39 AM |
She was really funny in Tremors but I couldn’t watch it. Being from Sugar Land, I never heard anyone speak like her - ouch!

Anytime i see Steve's name i think about how his ex wife mentioned he likes to be pegged. And i can't remember the last time i saw JoAnna Garcia, i liked that CW show she did called Privileged.

I think a big part of it was that Van was never written or played as a loser. He tried to be good and did really well within his means.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 17, 2022 4:12 AM |
I used to love it, but then I read all that shit Van's housekeeper said and now I just can't enjoy it nymore.

Reba is almost an EGOT. She's won Grammies, a Tony, and (I think) an Emmy. She should have gotten an Oscar for Tremors!

Melissa is a terrific and frequent guest on "25 Words Or Less"

I adore Melissa Peterman! I had no clue who she was when I went to the Hollywood Bowl's SOUND OF MUSIC sing-a-long (which she hosts) for the first time, almost a decade ago. Her running commentary during the 90-minute, pre-film costume parade/contest was fucking hilarious!! She's one of the reasons that my friends & I wanted to go back again, the following year...and the year after that...and the year after that.

It looks like lots of the "Reba" actors have done quite well since the show went off the air. McIntyre obviously does music. Peterman, Howey and Garcia have regularly worked since then. That's not a bad average for a CW sitcom.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 17, 2022 12:03 PM |
I always loved Petersen as BJ. She was the heart and soul of Reba.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 18, 2022 12:41 PM |
OP needs a "good background show" while working and is using "Reba" for the purpose.
And OP doesn't realize a self-indictment when she posts one.

^ I don't realize it either. Explain please.

I don't understand people who need noise like this. I'm either working or I'm watching TV, not both at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 18, 2022 1:56 PM |
Can we get a makeup Emmy for Barbra Jean? Or at least a Golden Satellite Award? Simply one of the funniest characters. You could tell Reba was struggling to keep a straight face sometimes with her.
Garcia and Howey made a great duo as well.

I've been working from home for 25 years and if I had a sitcom playing while I was supposed to be working I would never get a single damn thing done. Does your boss know?

Reba should have been awarded a special Tony for Annie Get Your Gun.
Even the legendary Barbara Cook said that was one of the best performances she'd ever seen on a Broadway stage.

I’d let Steve Howey put whatever he wanted up my ass.
