What's your favorite gay movie

That was released within the last five years?

God's Own Country

by Anonymousreply 6December 29, 2021 6:21 AM

The last gay movie I watched was this Israeli movie called "Out in the Dark". I watched it on Netflix like 5 years ago. I watched with subtitles on because it's in Hebrew. It's beautifully acted by the two lead actors. Both are straight in real life btw. The movie is set in the backdrop of Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the two men at the odd of the conflicts of their homelands fall for each other.

The Night Listener

The original 1993 "Tales of the City"; counts more as a miniseries, but what the hell.

[quote] I enjoyed this movie from Georgia about a gay dancer -- a country you don't hear/get much gay content from.

What are you talking about? Georgia is where out-and-proud filmmaker Tyler Perry makes all his Madea movies, the longest running film series about a trans character ever.

I haven’t fact checked any of this, but I’m pretty sure I’m right.

by Anonymousreply 19December 29, 2021 8:35 AM

I don't think I've seen anything other than God's Own Country. And I found that to be kind of boring.

by Anonymousreply 20December 29, 2021 9:52 AM

Moonlight, Pain and Glory, Rocketman, and Love Simon in order of quality.

I still need to see Sublet and Supernova, which both look promising.

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2021 9:58 AM

Not a movie, but a tv show you can stream with subtitles - SKAM France, season 3.

I liked Ete 85 very much, but only the interactions between the two guys.

by Anonymousreply 22December 29, 2021 9:59 AM

R7 Nothing strange about straight actors playing gay and doing it well. Like Hugh Grant and James Wilby in Maurice and Josh O' Connor and Alec Secareanu in God's own country. And DL faves Armie and Timmy in Call me by your name.

by Anonymousreply 34December 29, 2021 5:29 PM

r15: That's a great list. I've seen most of them, and have enjoyed them all in varying degrees. Too bad that Marco Berger's Young Hunter (El cazador) was meh.

Maurice.

I always thought, in the 2002 "Highway", that Jake G's character was in love with Jared Leto's character, but it never went anyway. Too bad, the two of them getting it on back then would have been hot.

by Anonymousreply 42December 30, 2021 2:28 AM

Anything by Argentinian director Marco Berger; The Blond One, Hawaii, Taekwondo. God’s Own Country. Free Fall. The Pass. Agree with others that Maurice is a great period movie and wonderful story.

by Anonymousreply 43December 30, 2021 3:24 AM

Berger's movies are the best. I love the ongoing sexual tension each one of them have.

R57 Ah, hiv and death - lovely.

by Anonymousreply 58December 31, 2021 3:19 AM

I started looking for quality queer stories during quarantine and these were my stand-out favorites. They don't all have perfect happy endings, but there's no tragedies either. Nobody dies - just a couple of broken hearts here and there - but those are counter-balanced by lots of budding romances, fantastic performances, sparkling chemistry between the actors, smart humour, awesome music, tenderness, courage and all kinds of lovely people being kind to one-another.

Note: Some of these are older than 5 years old, but I watched them all this year, so they are new to me.

R6 I loved God's Own Country! I like when they showed dicks and when the Romanian guy made spaghetti for the boyfriend, tasted his plate, then salted it. That was so sweet!

Most gay films are terrible.

There are only few worth bothering with.

Probably half a dozen and that's about it.

I liked Kater (Tomcat). Well the parts about the day to day mundane activities and entertaining friends were interesting to watch, and their house was quaint. The stuff about the cat was weird and I still didn't get what made the one husband suddenly do what he did...

by Anonymousreply 66December 31, 2021 1:02 PM

The Finnish film that R52 is describing is 'A Moment in the Reeds" (2017), directed by Mikko Makela.

R61, you're certainly right concerning all of the crappy gay direct to video garbage out there. (Who finances this crap?) I've seen my fill and don't want to see any more, BUT, amidst that garbage are some mighty fine films, many of which are listed here. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are some great movies cited in this thread (the lists at R15 and R59, in particular.)

Nowadays, I research and read reviews of any "gay" movie I am interested in watching; that's helped a great deal in finding the quality films. I was so used to straight to video garbage that I was amazed and heartened that there actually were some quality gay films out there.

by Anonymousreply 67December 31, 2021 1:45 PM

Another vote for both "The Bllonde One" and "End of the Century."

One I liked was called "Luciérnagas" (Fireflies) from 2018.

MOONLIGHT was good, but it needed more sex and romance.

by Anonymousreply 69January 3, 2022 8:27 PM

would hard to think of a good gay movie that is not about coming of age, AIDs, cross cultural relationships or older/younger. Not possible to find one that is original or good let alone a favorite. And so many are never heard of independent movies.

4th MAN OUT. A bit silly, but sweet. With gorgeous Evan Todd & Chord Overstreet.

by Anonymousreply 73January 3, 2022 9:40 PM

Moonlight was utter bore.

We're supposed to think it special because of it's African American cast and African American cultural themes of homosexuality.

Whatever. It was a snooze fest.

I'd rather watch the Birdcage.

by Anonymousreply 74January 3, 2022 10:04 PM

Avengers: Endgame.

Gayest fucking thing I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 75January 3, 2022 10:07 PM

“Moonlight” was sad. It was an unconventional look at gay men. Rather than watch some fantasy phony story like “Call Me By Your Name” that glamorized the closet and heterosexuality, “Moonlight” was about showing the truth of it.

by Anonymousreply 76January 3, 2022 11:04 PM

I really liked "Operation Hyacinth" and "Call Me By Your Name".

by Anonymousreply 77January 4, 2022 9:06 AM

Actually hoping you can help. I saw a film at a gay film festival. A street hustler gets picked up by an older guy. He hits him over the head with an ashtray but the older guy gets off on it really as he has issues and then they have an affair. It has a surprising ending I won't give away that's really about class and internalised homophobia. I think it was Argentinan but not sure? Anyone know the name?

by Anonymousreply 78January 4, 2022 9:17 AM

Love, Simon is genuinely a much better movie than most of the dreary, try-hard arthouse gay films that so predominate.
