Best and worst biopic performances?
Recent DL threads on "Ghandi" and "Spencer," and the talents (or lack thereof) of their respective stars, had me thinking about this. It seems roles in biopics are now the go-to awards-bait contenders, but the outcomes range from amazing to terrible.
So, over the years and the hundreds of biopics out there, which actors truly captured the essence of the famous figure they played in a biopic, and which actors got it all wrong?
Who have been some of the best and some of the worst? (This includes supporting performances.)
Go!

Jennifer Love Boobitt as Audrey Hepburn must be in contention for "worst of the worst".
Does "Evita" count (seeing as it's a stylized series of tableaux vivants rather than a proper biopic)? So that we can add Madonna to the worst list.

Judy Davis (Older Judy) and Tammy Blanchard (Young Judy) were both uncanny in ME AND MY SHADOWS. I only wish they had kept Tammy through the MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS scenes. Davis was already in her forties and already looking haggard. Garland was only 22 when she made that film and was still very dewy and fresh-faced.

Best - both lead performances in Amadeus, the Blairs in The Queen, The Insider with Russell Crowe.
Worst truly was Spencer. There was nothing of Princess Diana, the human being or the cultural totem, in that performance.

I hate Jenna Coleman's performance as Queen Victoria on the "Masterpiece" ongoing series "Victoria." She's far too pretty and far too ordinary. She also learns stupid and obvious life lessons in every episode that never seem to sink in.
They showed a scene in Mike Leigh's "Turner" a few years ago where another less famous actress played Queen Victoria, whom J. M. W. Turner overhears bitching to Prince Albert about his paintings at an exhibition, and that actress got her down perfectly: the arrogance, the plainness, the command, the self-satisfaction.

Worst: Patty Duke as Herself in the TV Movie Adaptation Just Call Me Anna
Sometimes playing yourself is the hardest role a great actor can attempt. It was a very self-conscious, unfocused, and hammy performance. And this coming from me, a person who has loved Patty in everything except this one movie. (I even read the book. Twice.)

Recently rewatched 'Mrs Parker & The Vicious Circle' and was disappointed to find that I still couldn't accept Jennifer Jason Leigh (though I like her in other things, sometimes very much). I just find it hard to believe that the real Dorothy Parker slurred and mumbled like a lush 24/7. It's such a one note performance, and even though the rest of the film is fine, she's so dominant that it sinks it.

Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline in Sweet Dreams was tremendous. It's a fully inhabited, lived in performance. Lange knew Patsy down to her bone marrow. It's a shame the film drew so much comparison to Coal Miner's Daughter, when they're almost like night and day-different. Sweet Dreams is an exploration of a relationship of two people who love-hate each other, like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Of major critics, only Kael seemed to understand this.

Poor Vincent D'Onofrio is so unused to being out hammed he doesn't know what to do with her and mainly looks on with bemusement.
