My BF watches Always Sunny, so I've seen a lot of it by association. Recently he began watching Mythic Quest on AppleTV. Just like on Always Sunny, it's a lot of Rob McElhenney clearly giving himself the 'funniest' lines, both shows seem to highlight McElhenney often wearing a wifebeater or sleeveless shirt, flexing his shoulder and doing some 'cool' karate move. We're supposed to think he's just playing a 'wacky' character, but McElhenney is clearly a narcissist. Checking him out on Twitter and Instagram, he does seem to think of himself as a darling of Hollywood and as an A-lister. Am I off on this or is it accurate? All I see when I watch this guy is major douche factor.
Rob McElhenney from Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Mythic Quest seems like a major douche

I've met him. He's super nice.

OP has obviously never seen It's Always Sunny because Mac does not get the funniest lines on that show.

I actually agree with OP (and I say that as an IASIP fan). He's solidly my least favorite member of the gang, and unlike Kaitlin Oleson, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, he has zero range.
Also, read up on how he treated the original Sweet Dee/his ex-,girlfriend before Sunny went to air. Not only did he humiliate her, he cast someone he wanted to fuck in the role (it worked...and although Kaitlin is great, I still find her husband sleazy).

I think he purposely restrains himself--ala Tina Fey in 30 Rock--and allows the others to shine. When Mac's funny, he's definitely on par with the rest of the cast. But I think his character is supposed to be the "straight guy" of the group. Honestly, the weakest link of the cast IMO is my crush--Charlie Day. I like the character but I don't think he's as funny as the others even DeVito. Now I have found him funny in roles outside of IASIP but not very much on the show.

Howerton is the king. Katilin overdoes it--ALOT--but when she reins it in she's second in command.

Kaitlin has been fantastic as Deborah's (Jean Smart) chaotic daughter on "Hacks."

McIhenney's increasing ego issues aside, we've been getting into Mythic Quest over the holiday break. It's a little manic and the Asian Aussie chick literally screams through every line in every scene she's in, and it gets nearly unbearable. But it's got a little tiny bit of 30 Rock style going on. We're on the second season and it did take a really dark turn, suddenly, when McInhenney's character berates his co-creative director after a company assessment exercise. Then there are two episodes back to back which, strangely, go into the backstory of F. Murray Abraham's character as an oddball but funny 80+ y.o. gaming story writer. Those two episodes get strangely intense and uncomfortable as well. But it's still a mildly fun show, fun enough to keep watching.
McInerney is still so proud of his shredded body, that in every scene he's in, he's got to tense up and flex so that you see he's muscular. There are countless scenes of him without his shirt on and of course, a nude scene from behind that is so clearly forced/intentional that you just can't ignore it. We get it, dude, you worked out, got cut and shredded. A lot of us have been there. Just, calm down about it now. Sheesh. He'd be so much sexier if his increasing douchiness didn't seep through the television screen. How does poor Kaitlyn Oslen put up with him at home? He must be insufferable.

He does seem a bit of a wanker, but I don't watch any of the shows mentioned above, so my experience is admittedly limited.

I agree with R8, I currently live in Philadelphia and he's known as being a nice guy.

R17, I haven't seen Mythic Quest but isn't that the point of the show?
[quote]Questions about the role traditional masculinity plays in the workplace are at the heart of Mythic Quest, which centres on the team behind a massively popular online fantasy game. McElhenney plays an egomaniacal, bushy-bearded game creator named Ian (pronounced Iron) Grimm who constantly butts heads with long-suffering lead engineer Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao).
[...]
[quote]Since the show first aired, McElhenney has been contacted on social media by a number of game developers who all assumed that they alone were the inspiration for the preening buffoon. “I thought that was really funny,” he grins. “First, that they would own up to that, and second, because he has a very specific look, and the guys all look very, very similar. Of course it’s not a real person. He’s a ridiculous version of an actual human being.”
