“Don’t Look Up” on Netflix

Meryl is hilarious as the cigarette smoking, vapid, President who has photos with Mariah Carey and Bill Clinton in the Oval Office. Jennifer Lawrence is a horrible pot smoking woke bitch. Leonardo is a fattie nerd. It’s a train wreck but watching Meryl kept me there.

I was surprised it was as watchable as it was but Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio really helped to ground the film from the ridiculous characterisers by most of the supporting cast how didn't have much to do and what they did they did very broadly.

Towards the end of the film it becomes very moving and has a brilliant final pay-off, even if one can seeing it coming.

Wish Adam McKay would learn to edit his films better. They need to be tighter and more compact. 4/10 - Big thank-you to JLO and Leo who saved the film.

by Anonymousreply 1December 24, 2021 1:14 PM

DiCaprio is turning into Oliver Platt, only not as cute.

by Anonymousreply 2December 24, 2021 1:22 PM

DiCaprio’s never been super attractive to me, but he’s very plain, almost ugly, in this. And fat.

by Anonymousreply 3December 24, 2021 1:29 PM

I found it more amusing than I was expecting. It felt like an evolution of Idiocracy. Like R1, I agree it needed to be better edited.

by Anonymousreply 4December 24, 2021 3:45 PM

This is crazy but I find Leonardo DiCaprio impossibly sexy in this and I have never thought that about him even once before now.

But I have strange taste in men.

by Anonymousreply 5December 24, 2021 5:07 PM

Meryl is too good for this part, but I loved her Oval Office scene, talking about the regular people loving her smoking.

by Anonymousreply 6December 24, 2021 7:34 PM

TimoTay has pretty much a nothing role. I wonder how DiCaprio felt about having to work with him?

by Anonymousreply 7December 24, 2021 8:04 PM

R3: I don’t know why we have to pretend he’s still handsome.

by Anonymousreply 8December 24, 2021 8:05 PM

I thought this will be a drama with comedy parts, but this was straight up comedy movie.

by Anonymousreply 9December 24, 2021 10:59 PM

So they made that 300 million blockbuster movie in like a month? And the Chief of Staff/ president's son says and I quote: "...stuff and shit"on live TV? And why did those Don't look up folks started to get violent at the presidential rally once they saw a comet? They knew there was a comet, the president and the government never said there wasn't one, they were saying they are going to blow up the comet and recover the minerals from the pieces. That was their whole campaign. But those people started shouting: you lied to us. That part was idiotic.

by Anonymousreply 10December 24, 2021 11:16 PM

Jennifer Lawrence was actually quite attractive in this movie. And so was Cate Blanchett, minus the fake teeth.

by Anonymousreply 11December 24, 2021 11:17 PM

That Steve Jobs type smartphone billionaire guy was the funniest part of the movie.

by Anonymousreply 12December 24, 2021 11:18 PM

WIGS WIGS THE WIGS

by Anonymousreply 13December 24, 2021 11:45 PM

Truly horrendous. The acting is atrocious. Did the pandemic cause them to forget how to act? Neither the plot nor the script make much sense. The editing is even worse.

This crap fest comes across as a parody of a movie instead of an actual movie. Who the hell ok'd this shit?

by Anonymousreply 14December 25, 2021 12:06 AM

R14 I think Netflix green lights every thing they get and never bother reading the scripts.

by Anonymousreply 15December 25, 2021 12:12 AM

The only current decent productions on Netflix are some of the documentaries and the film “Power of the Dog.” Most everything else is fluff and filler.

by Anonymousreply 16December 25, 2021 12:35 AM

Dicaprio is really looking older

by Anonymousreply 17December 25, 2021 1:17 AM

This is a pretty damn good film, sort of a Network for the modern age, with a little bit of Dr. Strangelove too, taking on the absurdity of climate change deniers, the inertia of climate change believers, Trumpism, social media, right wing news, mainstream news, etc. Great satire and a great comedy for adults.

by Anonymousreply 18December 25, 2021 1:26 AM

Loved the Jonah Hill character (loved to hate him). A play on daddy and daughter shitshow of last administration.

by Anonymousreply 19December 25, 2021 1:31 AM

Do some people upthread not understand the deadpan satire tone of this movie? It's filled with great and enjoyable performances but my god, very grim outlook.

by Anonymousreply 20December 25, 2021 4:05 AM

It was a decent satire. Better than I expected. Kind of “Dr. Strangelove-ultralite.”

OP how is Lawrence’s character “woke?” She actually seems the antithesis of woke. Did you actually watch the movie or just the trailer and quickly scramble to post some half-baked thread?

by Anonymousreply 21December 25, 2021 4:15 AM

Fuck do I hate ariana grande more than before, cross-eyed midget slut.

by Anonymousreply 22December 25, 2021 4:20 AM

I thought Ariana was very game. Her doomsday duet was hilariously and high camp. It's like we have watched different movies. I think some people are satire free zones. Or STUPID. Or, yeah, both.

by Anonymousreply 23December 25, 2021 4:25 AM

No, I understand satire but arian is so dislikable.

by Anonymousreply 24December 25, 2021 4:27 AM

She made me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 25December 25, 2021 4:28 AM

Dear God, Dicaprio looks like my ex in this.

by Anonymousreply 26December 25, 2021 4:31 AM

Yes. Ariana Grande should have been cut, including especially the concert. Cute? Sure. Ten minutes of cute? No.

by Anonymousreply 27December 25, 2021 4:31 AM

Did you not listen to the lyrics. That was not a "cute" performance at the stadium, it was lacerating, and she sent up divas like herself in the mix. You say you get satire but it seems to have flown over your perception level.

by Anonymousreply 28December 25, 2021 4:34 AM

Someone get Leo some chapstick

by Anonymousreply 29December 25, 2021 4:35 AM

No, honey. I got it. It wasn’t the least bit subtle. I just thought it slowed the movie to a crawl.

by Anonymousreply 30December 25, 2021 4:36 AM

Fucking terrible movie.

I can't believe someone got paid for that script that was an atrocious ripping-off/dumbing-down of Network, Dr. Strangelove, and Melancholia.

by Anonymousreply 31December 25, 2021 4:37 AM

We get it. You hate Ariana. So she ruins everything. Carry on.

by Anonymousreply 32December 25, 2021 4:39 AM

I really enjoyed it. It’s gutsy and funny. Everyone is good in it. It’s probably over the heads of most people who want more generic movies. Leo and Meryl are the best. I also gone Jennifer a most improved.

by Anonymousreply 33December 25, 2021 4:41 AM

^ give

by Anonymousreply 34December 25, 2021 4:41 AM

I don’t have any feelings about Ariana. I don’t listen to pop music. I just didn’t think she added to the movie. You’ve now accused me of being stupid and biased, saying more about you (hysterical fanboy) than me.

by Anonymousreply 35December 25, 2021 4:47 AM

It’s noticeable that Jennifer is a woman next to Timothee, who looks like a sickly child compared to her.

by Anonymousreply 36December 25, 2021 4:47 AM

R17 Not really. His son at the end completely reads as his younger brother.

by Anonymousreply 37December 25, 2021 4:48 AM

This is an unfunny mega turd of a movie. All who participated should be ashamed. Dr Strangelove it ain't.

by Anonymousreply 38December 25, 2021 10:01 AM

Is critically panned, R38 Which is delightfully yummy. Critics didn't blindly praise this turd. Also That ringlet whore M knew about whalestein.

by Anonymousreply 39December 25, 2021 10:06 AM

Is that Timothee motherfucker in THIS too? JESUS, he's wearing thin.

by Anonymousreply 40December 25, 2021 10:37 AM

I went in with low expectations due to the mixed reviews, but this was excellent. McKay summed up exactly what I've been feeling for years about our inept, corrupt government and mindless culture. The leads were all good, especially DiCaprio, Hill, and Streep. I wasn't sure what Timothée's role was supposed to be, and I couldn't understand what he was saying most of the time, but overall this was another excellent Adam McKay movie.

by Anonymousreply 41December 25, 2021 1:18 PM

Jonah Hill is so fucking unfunny and ugly. I hate him.

by Anonymousreply 42December 25, 2021 1:26 PM

When Timmy surprisingly kisses her and she says “ughhh no!.” I just wanted to be her so badly.

by Anonymousreply 43December 25, 2021 1:53 PM

This should’ve been called Laugh Free or Free of Laughs.

by Anonymousreply 44December 25, 2021 2:55 PM

I guess it's well acted but it's so heavy handed and not very funny. And it isnt cause it's about the end of the world that it wasnt funny. The jokes just weren't funny. I guess i was amused mid credits when Meryl's dumb bitch walked right up to that creature and got wrecked.

by Anonymousreply 45December 25, 2021 2:57 PM

Ariana is an amazing vocalist.

by Anonymousreply 46December 25, 2021 3:22 PM

Is this a weird play on Trump and Make America Great Again? And the Covid pandemic?

by Anonymousreply 47December 25, 2021 3:23 PM

It was better than the reviews made it out to be, I thought it was a great satire on our current junk culture.

by Anonymousreply 48December 25, 2021 3:27 PM

I hope it’s nominated for best picture. It’s a great time capsule for the future (if we have one).

by Anonymousreply 49December 25, 2021 3:29 PM

I agree to some extent the satire of especially how news is covered. The scenes with Blanchett and DiCaprio on that show were on point. It's just for a comedy it wasnt very funny.

by Anonymousreply 50December 25, 2021 3:30 PM

Timmy is starting to look like a methhead

by Anonymousreply 51December 25, 2021 3:34 PM

Why is Jonah Hill so fat? I thought he lost all that weight.

by Anonymousreply 52December 25, 2021 3:39 PM

Ariana Grande and Timothee Chalamet steal the movie. They are incredibly charismatic and you can't take your eyes off them when they are onscreen.

by Anonymousreply 53December 25, 2021 3:39 PM

Bitches, I liked it. For once I looked at Lawrence and did not see the actress but the character she played. Streep with her golden falling lockets and her greed and vapidity and political pandering was amusing and oh that ending.

Agree about Timothee. Was he channeling Brando mumbling? It did not work.

Listen to the lyrics in Ariana's song. Bitter and vulgar. I could see a generation going to a concert as the world is annihilated.

by Anonymousreply 54December 25, 2021 3:40 PM

^ locks not lockets

But lockets is funnier.

by Anonymousreply 55December 25, 2021 3:41 PM

Timothee is gorgeous. I wasn’t expecting to see him in this. And Meryl was hilarious. I don’t care for Jennifer Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 56December 25, 2021 3:41 PM

Is Timmy POZ?

by Anonymousreply 57December 25, 2021 3:42 PM

Leo is fug

by Anonymousreply 58December 25, 2021 3:54 PM

Stay for the credits. You get to see some dick. A few of the guys are hot. And Meryl shows her ass! I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about that.

by Anonymousreply 59December 25, 2021 3:57 PM

It’s a flabby cottage cheese ass, but that normal for her age.

by Anonymousreply 60December 25, 2021 3:57 PM

Meryl used a body double

by Anonymousreply 61December 25, 2021 3:58 PM

It was a body double. La Streep is not going to flash her butt.

by Anonymousreply 62December 25, 2021 3:59 PM

If Don’t Look Up is nominated for best picture, I think Streep will be the actor to appear in the most best picture films.

by Anonymousreply 63December 25, 2021 4:00 PM

If you stay till the very end, you get to see fat ass Jonah Hill one more time; he survived the comet and is on this iPhone posting about the last day on earth.

by Anonymousreply 64December 25, 2021 4:05 PM

I love arianas song.

Look up, what he's really trying to say

Is get your head out of your ass

Listen to the goddamn qualified scientists

We really fucked it up, fucked it up this time

It's so close, I can feel the heat big time

And you can act like everything is alright

But this is probably happening in real time

Celebrate or cry or pray, whatever it takes

To get you through the mess we made

'Cause tomorrow may never come

Just look up

Turn off that shit Fox News

'Cause you're about to die soon everybody

by Anonymousreply 65December 25, 2021 4:19 PM

Is JLaw’s boyfriend the lead from Station Eleven, or am I being racist?

by Anonymousreply 66December 25, 2021 5:13 PM

Are Cate and Tyler supposed to be Kelly Ripa and her Black sidekick?

by Anonymousreply 67December 25, 2021 5:14 PM
Is JLaw’s boyfriend the lead from Station Eleven, or am I being racist?

Nah, not being racist (this time). It's Himesh Patel.

by Anonymousreply 68December 25, 2021 5:18 PM

I agree with the above poster that this movie will be a time capsule of our current times, and will become more popular with age.

by Anonymousreply 69December 25, 2021 5:24 PM

R66 - You’re not being racist. I can never tell that type apart either.

by Anonymousreply 70December 25, 2021 5:25 PM

That smartphone inventor billionaire was hilarious. He was supposed to be Steve Jobs/Bill Gates/Elon Musk type of weird billionaire nerd businessman.

by Anonymousreply 71December 25, 2021 5:26 PM

Was the president supposed to be a Republican? There was a photo in The Oval Office of her hugging Bill Clinton, right? (plus Mariah Carey and Steven Seagal)

by Anonymousreply 72December 25, 2021 5:28 PM

Meryl playing Ana Gasteyer

by Anonymousreply 73December 25, 2021 5:35 PM

Too similar to the part Rylance played in Ready Player One.

by Anonymousreply 74December 25, 2021 5:40 PM

This sucks. I have up with about an hour to go. Just too dull and obvious.

by Anonymousreply 75December 25, 2021 5:41 PM
Was the president supposed to be a Republican?

She privatized saving the planet.

by Anonymousreply 76December 25, 2021 5:41 PM

Interesting that TimoTay didn’t do any press or attend the premiere. Just a quick shoutout on his Instagram story. Granted that was probably because of Wonka and the COVID outbreak and the fact that his role is so small. Still I thought maybe he didn’t like working on it( it is a less than perfect film) as well as working with Leo and JLaw.

by Anonymousreply 77December 25, 2021 6:05 PM

^ project much?

by Anonymousreply 78December 25, 2021 6:07 PM

I thought he was funny. He was on his phone in every scene.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 79December 25, 2021 6:07 PM

R77 He was the star of Dune that just came out not that long ago. Pretty sure he was more occupied with that than doing a press for the movie where he has 10 lines.

by Anonymousreply 80December 25, 2021 6:09 PM

Oh fucking hell don't turn this into a Timothee thread you fucking freaks.

by Anonymousreply 81December 25, 2021 6:11 PM

I loved the parallels to Trumpism and all the shit takes about social media insanity.

Also, Ron Perlman as the crazy old racist astronaut.

"He's from a different generation."

by Anonymousreply 82December 25, 2021 6:12 PM

He’s just such a sweet boy. I just love Timmy. And I imagine he has lots of gay friends and doesn’t judge them.

by Anonymousreply 83December 25, 2021 6:13 PM

I imagine he shits coffee ice cream.

by Anonymousreply 84December 25, 2021 6:16 PM

The audience score for this movie is better than the critics' score. It's worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 85December 25, 2021 6:20 PM
Why is Jonah Hill so fat? I thought he lost all that weight.

What Jonah Hill lost in weight, he gained in weight.

by Anonymousreply 86December 25, 2021 6:20 PM

I think the critics were biased because of the way the movie depicts the media.

by Anonymousreply 87December 25, 2021 6:25 PM

With all this mess of a cast there was no role for Beanie? She could have at least played an intern having an affair with the president’s husband.

by Anonymousreply 88December 25, 2021 6:33 PM

Loved this movie. Hilarious, biting and packed an emotional wallop.

Love all of the people in it. Definitely Chalamet's best performance to date. Streep and Hill make wonderful stand-ins for the Trump menagerie. Everybody was great.

by Anonymousreply 89December 25, 2021 6:35 PM

I don’t think anyone would refer to this as “sharp witted”. More like leaden and unfunny.

by Anonymousreply 90December 25, 2021 6:39 PM

Go watch the latest Marvel movie r90, that's probably more your speed.

by Anonymousreply 91December 25, 2021 6:40 PM

Chris Evans' cameo as a bonehead action movie star was also pretty funny.

by Anonymousreply 92December 25, 2021 6:41 PM

Jamie Lee Curtis should have played meryls role.

by Anonymousreply 93December 25, 2021 6:45 PM

Ok far from perfect and with flaws. Still, I don’t think it’s that bad as the critics made it out to be. I liked the idea of the comet being a metaphor for climate change and the message is sent in such a powerful, effective way. The ending in particular is really emotional and satisfying. I loved the mid credits scene with Meryl being eaten by the creature on the alien planet. A couple of funny lines and moments but not laugh out loud funny.

The acting was atrocious, however. You can tell they all did this for the money. Everybody was phoning it in and so over the top. TimoTay did his usual mumbling mess and Harvey’s girl was cringeworthy.

by Anonymousreply 94December 25, 2021 6:45 PM

Boy, everyone’s a critic with this one.

by Anonymousreply 95December 25, 2021 6:46 PM

So not funny...obvious "satire"...oh, the news is all about nothing, the president is dumb, the earth is being destroyed and no one cares. One funny scene: the revolting Jonah Hill sitting alone at the end, thinking "she'll be back." The ONLY thing in this overlong, sophomoric, and obvious movie. Want real satire? Try "wag the Dog" or "Dr Strangelove" or Oscar Wilde.

by Anonymousreply 96December 25, 2021 6:46 PM

Why? They wanted a star

by Anonymousreply 97December 25, 2021 6:51 PM

No to Jamie Lee.

by Anonymousreply 98December 25, 2021 6:52 PM

r90 Perfectly said!

by Anonymousreply 99December 25, 2021 6:54 PM

Producer Cassian Elwes hated it. I was surprised how frank he was. He called it unwatchable drivel. I didn't dislike it but McKay needs to stop directing his own films because he lacks restraint. The overuse of additional footage/images was overkill.

by Anonymousreply 100December 25, 2021 6:55 PM

Honestly the best actor in this film was Leonardo’s wife. (She was in “Two and a Half Men - can’t remember her name) She was the only one who took the job seriously and I felt for her when he had the affair, and again when she took him back.

by Anonymousreply 101December 25, 2021 6:59 PM

When you've satirized our current political situation so well that half of the people who watch the movie don't get it, I'm gonna go with "job well done."

by Anonymousreply 102December 25, 2021 7:42 PM

just started watching this. it's a farce

by Anonymousreply 103December 25, 2021 7:47 PM

For the first time in history, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett, the 3 most awarded actresses of all time, are sharing the screen in Don't Look Up.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 104December 25, 2021 7:51 PM

R103 - Keep watching; it gets better.

by Anonymousreply 105December 25, 2021 7:51 PM

Most awarded?

by Anonymousreply 106December 25, 2021 7:53 PM

The actress who played Leo’s wife was supposed to be down to earth. Calling her the best actress misunderstands that it was a satire and the other characters were supposed to be OTT.

by Anonymousreply 107December 25, 2021 7:59 PM

They may have cut it out, but I don’t think Meryl and Cate even exchange one line of dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 108December 25, 2021 8:08 PM

Not quite a Dr. Strangelove For Our Times, but I laughed out loud several times. Even Jonah Hill doing his Jonah Hill schtick was funny. DiCaprio oddly reminded me of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and I couldn't help thinking how much he would have killed in this role. M was okay; nothing to write home about. And Mark Rylance stole the film. 7/10.

by Anonymousreply 109December 26, 2021 12:08 AM

R101 Melanie Lynsky played Leo's wife. I remember her from Heavenly Creatures as Kate Winslet's matricidal teen lover.

by Anonymousreply 110December 26, 2021 12:24 AM

She's also in Yellowjackets showing on Showtime. She also plays a dumpy fat frau

by Anonymousreply 111December 26, 2021 12:26 AM

I admired Dicaprio's lack of vanity to have a dumpy fat wife and adult children. Other A List male stars would not have done that. Cruise and Pitt, who are both more than a decade older than Dicaprio, have still never played fathers of adult children and all their love interests have been hot young women.

by Anonymousreply 112December 26, 2021 12:30 AM

Watched it yesterday and then watched it again today. Loved it. Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry were outstanding as the vacuous morning-show hosts. The score was terrific too. I was surprised to see David Sirota as a co-writer. 8/10

by Anonymousreply 113December 26, 2021 1:02 AM

I’d give Mark Rylance an Oscar for this. He made the film for me.

Otherwise it was an entertaining and funny mess that felt jacked up on steroids. Lots of things seemed to be sloppily done, including the sound in parts (at first I thought my tv was broken), and it should have been cut by 45 minutes. I hate the Trump children as much as the next person but I would have removed that character.

It’s clear that it’s satirical or farcical, but I think some people are reacting poorly because it’s nihilistic and makes 99.9% of the population seem like wastes of space (hey, maybe we are). And I think McKay accidentally got caught up and distracted in the popcorn flick vibe and lost his grip somewhat on the satire.

But I’m glad to see something interesting and different.

by Anonymousreply 114December 26, 2021 2:06 AM

R112 Despite his dating pattern irl, Leo’s love interests onscreen have always been age appropriate with the possible exception of Margot Robbie, who was 22 during the filming of The Wolf of Wall Street. Although many people are convinced she was lying about her age at the time.

by Anonymousreply 115December 26, 2021 2:43 AM

I disliked the Mark Rylance as Bezos/Zuckerberg/Musk subplot which was also the most unbelivable part of the film. The Meryl/Jonah Hill scenes were the funniest.

by Anonymousreply 116December 26, 2021 2:52 AM

The least funny "comedy" I've seen in a long time. The writing was hamfisted, the message was obvious, and it was just dull and uninteresting. People who are comparing it to Dr Strangelove, which is one of the best movies of all time, are clueless.

by Anonymousreply 117December 26, 2021 3:00 AM

I'm resisting the DL collective judgement that Melanie Lynsky is a dumpy Frau.

by Anonymousreply 118December 26, 2021 3:04 AM

Also, I loved Cate's glamazo dress when she meets the wife.

by Anonymousreply 119December 26, 2021 3:06 AM

Agreed on both R118 / 119.

by Anonymousreply 120December 26, 2021 3:07 AM

glamazon.

her character's bio was hilarious and they loved making a point she went to Dartmouth.

by Anonymousreply 121December 26, 2021 3:07 AM

I loved the way the White House was scandalized the scientists weren't Ivy League.

by Anonymousreply 122December 26, 2021 3:08 AM

Maybe it’s a modern classic. We don’t know how future generations will relate to it. It certainly will help explain to future civilizations how messed up the human race is right now.

by Anonymousreply 123December 26, 2021 3:12 AM

The plot change at the hour mark when the President changes course and decides not to blow up the comet makes no sense. The President is shown as having a 99% approval rating at the time with everyone united behind the original plan to obliterate the comet. And that plan was apparently an imminent success. To stop the mission because a billionaire donor (Mark Rylance) wanted to mine the comet's rare minerals for monetary gain would be just stupid. But perhpas the point is that everyone in charge is so fucking stupid and selfish.

by Anonymousreply 124December 26, 2021 3:22 AM

R124 yes that is the point. Plus he has her bought and paid for. Verisimilitude is suspended in satire. Nobody would turn around the launch of dozens of intergalactic nuclear missiles - where would they even land on earth.

by Anonymousreply 125December 26, 2021 3:25 AM

Cate's teeth, is that for this movie or did she get new chompers?

by Anonymousreply 126December 26, 2021 3:26 AM

All my friends like this. The only negative I’ve seen has been from 2 npr commentators I follow. Typical out of touch response.

by Anonymousreply 127December 26, 2021 3:35 AM

It's funny how the head of NASA was not a scientist but a Super Donor, just like the clowns in the last administration. Who knew the last administration was more of a comedy/nightmare than this movie.

by Anonymousreply 128December 26, 2021 4:25 AM

Melanie Lynskey gained weight but she’s a fine actress and is consistently singled out. How fucking reductive hearing “fat frau” or age-appropriate from some vulgar, eyebrowless I’m sure bitch faggots. So cruel cos the worlds cruel to them and they don’t even get that part.

by Anonymousreply 129December 26, 2021 4:28 AM

Watching now and while I love the satire, it’s dragging.

by Anonymousreply 130December 26, 2021 4:29 AM

Did Meryl Streep lose weight? Her figure was like a 25 year old. I think they photoshopped her and also photoshopped Cate.

by Anonymousreply 139December 26, 2021 9:48 AM

You can't Photoshop a movie.

by Anonymousreply 140December 26, 2021 10:27 AM

I watched this with family, whose reaction was that it was a funny parody of the Trump administration, not picking up on the points McKay was trying to make about the environment. I think that will be true for a lot of people. I wonder if the satire would have hit harder if the politicians in the movie had been well-meaning and intelligent but still captured by donors and distracted by political calculus.

by Anonymousreply 141December 26, 2021 10:27 AM

I can see no reason why it needed to be only one or the other r141. One of the things I enjoyed about the movie is that it embraced its identity as a parody of Trump and a commentary on the inability of the US to deal with the obvious climate disaster facing us.

Ambiguity, both political and cultural seemed an overriding theme to me.

That's all Hollywood does lately. They should produce more uplifting stories in these awful hard times, like they used to do during the Great Depression and WWII that not only entertained but inspired the nation. But as long as the radical left are in charge of Hollywood all we'll get is gloom & doom. They're very pessimistic people. Their glass is always half-empty. How did they take over within the past decade?

by Anonymousreply 144December 26, 2021 11:47 AM

R140, you can do A LOT in post production these days. CGI, not Photoshop, though.

by Anonymousreply 145December 26, 2021 11:53 AM

I get that it was supposed to be about climate change deniers (and seems to be Leo’s intent when talking about it), but it was very topical in the age of COVID and science denial in general. It may be a true comedy, but it wasn’t all that funny to me, maybe too soon.

The one an only Chris Evans had a great cameo though, so there was that.

by Anonymousreply 146December 26, 2021 11:55 AM

And satire is supposed to illuminate what we often don’t see for ourselves. Unless you have been living under a rock since 2015, this wasn’t satire, this was sad social commentary. Even MAGAs are self-aware about what they do and why they do it.

by Anonymousreply 147December 26, 2021 12:15 PM
Even MAGAs are self-aware about what they do and why they do it.

Some primitive peoples still believe this myth.

by Anonymousreply 148December 26, 2021 12:23 PM

I think it’s going to be regarded as classic satire- especially since it’s message is happening. Not a comet, but a burning world. All the Nero’s are fiddling and the masses following the Kardasians on social media and shuffling the music channeling through their buds. Lemmings.

by Anonymousreply 149December 26, 2021 1:07 PM

I saw this when it opened in theaters a couple weeks ago and the dead silence from the audience as 145 minutes worth of lame jokes landed with thud after thud still haunts me.

by Anonymousreply 150December 26, 2021 1:11 PM

You seem easily haunted r150.

by Anonymousreply 151December 26, 2021 1:29 PM

I was surprised how mediocre in quality this was compared to his prior film and given all the Oscar buzz it was getting.

by Anonymousreply 152December 26, 2021 1:30 PM

J Law pretty much keeps this film from completely collapsing. DiCaprio is absolute trash until the moment where he finally breaks down and screams at everyone. He summed up how much we all hate anti science Republicans and morons. Otherwise, he’s embarrassingly bad. Wtf is Meryl doing in this? Formerly fat actor as her son is so terrible it’s nearly career ending. Some of the writing is oookay. This could have been so much sharper and they could have had the courage to go SO MUCH HARDER. Way too long, and lazily edited.

No one is getting nominated for this pile of shit.

by Anonymousreply 153December 26, 2021 1:31 PM

You guys are so bitchy and OTT. This was fine. Not good, not bad, just fine.

by Anonymousreply 154December 26, 2021 1:47 PM

Asking seriously, R153, what were you hoping to see?

Agree the movie doesn't land, but am torn as to why. Did McKay intend this satire to border on inanity, did he dumb down the material in hopes of reaching the masses, or, did it all get away from him.

All that said, the skewering of the media was unfunny because it hit to close to home. Is it satire when it feels like a documentary?

by Anonymousreply 155December 26, 2021 1:48 PM

Satire works better when it’s less on the nose. McKay’s Talladega Nights, for example, uses NASCAR as an entry point to satirizing Bush-era America, and it’s hilarious.

In Don’t Look Up, when the hoards of comet deniers don red caps that say “don’t look up” instead of MAGA, you groan because it’s too obvious.

by Anonymousreply 156December 26, 2021 1:57 PM
Did McKay intend this satire to border on inanity, did he dumb down the material in hopes of reaching the masses, or, did it all get away from him.

This is also what I’m wondering. But I’m leaning toward the third option because so many of the technical aspects of the film felt rushed or like there were corners cut. It was like he was trying to make it super quickly or cheaply, which is odd for a Netflix release filled with superstars—you’d think he’d have as much time and money as he wants.

by Anonymousreply 157December 26, 2021 2:01 PM

Netflix movies are awful, the decline in good taste and civility seems to be threaded throughout their offerings. I remember when movies had, oh, I don't know, heart? Now it's all psychosis for the masses.

by Anonymousreply 158December 26, 2021 2:04 PM

The only ones who might be bothered by that are Deplorables themselves who don't like to be made fun of. Liberals just laugh at Deplorables being made fun of in such an obvious manner.

There's an end credit scene where Jonah Hill's character survives, and he has nothing better to do than film himself claiming to be the last man on earth and ask the viewers to like and hit the subscribe button.

Loved hating the Mark Rylace character. Obviously, the president didn't give a shit about anyone (even her own son!) unless he was a big donor who could make her even more powerful through a successful mining mission.

Watched the movie Silent Night before this one and I am more and more convinced that a self sustainable bunker / shelter is the best life insurance one can get these days (preferably one you can manage on your own ... you know, hell is other people).

I think its meant to be a wake up call, even though its through humor. You're the very person they are skewering in this film. You want to watch uplifting feel good movies while the world explodes outside your door. God forbid you should have your entertainment ruined with a serious thought. I really hate how "entertainment" has muscled out art in the film industry.

I laughed through most of this film. I really enjoyed it, and found the final dinner quite touching. But then, I adored Melancholia. I'm inclined to think some of the more obvious jokes, like the Dont Look Up hats standing in for MAGA, kind of had to be obvious because, as one poster here put it, they had to dumb some of the material down so the audience would see themselves. It showed those rallies in a context that really highlighted how absolutely fucking ridiculous it all was.

I actually liked JLaw in this.

by Anonymousreply 162December 26, 2021 3:06 PM

Jlaw looks constipated, Blanchett's and Streep's worst performances, DiCaprio underwhelming, Jonah Hill is an execrable actor, Chalamet wore out his 15 minutes a long time ago. Rylance, Lynskey and Ron Perlman were good. The movie is a mess.

R175 Name one action hero movie that was better than this movie.

by Anonymousreply 177December 26, 2021 5:43 PM

You wont agree and call me some juvenile name for this opinion but I enjoyed the new Spiderman movie far more. I'm a long time spiderman fan and thought it was well. For being a silly superhero movie that is. I see what Dont Look Up is going for but it isnt funny. The jokes if you can call them that fall flat. But whatever. Attack me for liking a dumb superhero movie and thinking it's a better movie over this if it makes you feel better. Before you do just remember it's my opinion and it's okay that we have different ones.

by Anonymousreply 178December 26, 2021 5:51 PM

Not okay, Ron, not okay.

by Anonymousreply 179December 26, 2021 5:59 PM

Jennifer Lawrence is so good in this and extremely likable. I find her more likable than Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock. Sandra is likable too, but it feels like she's trying too hard to be likable.

Jennifer deserves a Best Actress nomination over Gaga and Kristin.

by Anonymousreply 180December 26, 2021 6:13 PM

I usually hate Jennifer Lawrence but I liked her in this. MVP was - believe it or not - Jonah Hill. Cate Blanchett was fucking awful and honestly that whole dumb segment with her and DiCaprio should have been cut. The movie was too damn long to begin with.

DiCaprio has totally lost his looks now. Fat old German peasant. Timmy's prayer was actually moving.

by Anonymousreply 181December 26, 2021 6:41 PM

It was a strange plot point to have Leo’s character downright gleefully fuck around on his wife rather than just be caught by her flirting with the Cate character.

by Anonymousreply 182December 26, 2021 6:43 PM

About 25 minutes of fantastic satire floating over a two and a half hour movie. The final dining room table scene was terrific as was the credits scene with Rylance and Streep.

by Anonymousreply 183December 26, 2021 6:47 PM

Blanchett seems to be indulging more and more in caricatures. She does in Paradise Alley or Hell Alley or whatever the hell that crap is called. She's turned into Al Pacino.

by Anonymousreply 184December 26, 2021 6:47 PM

R144 has such a selective memory that doctors term it "Alzheimer's" and gently assist them into living situations away from sharp objects, sources of danger, or stimulation that cause neurons to misfire. The funny part is that R144 is so stupid they can't see the fact that those movies he pines for contained social commentary on that era as much as [italic]Don't Look Up[/italic] ; they just had to obscure it sufficient to avoid the censorship of the Hayes Code. Did R144 not see the wizard in [italic]The Wizard of Oz[/italic] as commentary on the failed Republican leadership that caused the country to sink into a depression after the alarm bells went off with the stock market crash of 1929? No, and I certainly wouldn't expect R144 to see the parallel between Trump and The Great and Powerful Oz.

by Anonymousreply 185December 26, 2021 7:04 PM

R182, it is so true though that this scientist gets co-opted by the media/political complex like that, and his alarm call is affected as a result. Very sad but very true.

I really love Jennifer Lawrence. I think it’s a shame she had to go into hibernation because a bunch a cunty haters dogpiled her. She’s been amazing in everything I’ve ever seen her in.

The only thing that made me laugh in this film was when Jonah Hill looked at Jennifer Lawrence and said, "Thanks for dressing up!"

by Anonymousreply 188December 26, 2021 7:29 PM

Jonah Hill's character was such a great douchebag. Telling Lawrence's character that he ordered the FBI to put a sack over her face or his rambling on the rally or when he praised, and prayed for, the nice, materialistic stuff.

by Anonymousreply 189December 26, 2021 7:38 PM

My favorite was when Meryl imitated Jennifer in a one word response. Plus the dinner scene and ending.

by Anonymousreply 190December 26, 2021 7:40 PM

Shit, I realised much too late this was a satire movie. Couldn't figure out if it was a drama/disaster movie trying to be funny, or a comedy trying to be serious… I felt it got too ridiculous at times, beyond the realm of satire.

Jennifer and Leo were both solid, given what they got to work with.

by Anonymousreply 209December 27, 2021 4:02 AM

It's actually very enjoyable as a movie and very accurate as satire. It perfectly represents our current sociopolitical bankruptcy. Somewhere between Idiocracy and Melancholia. Worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 216December 27, 2021 4:47 AM

R216 spot on. 2 and a half hours is unnecessary for understanding what is happening. It's annoying how many are being told "you didnt get it" or "you are who this movie is for". Nope I get it and am definitely pro science (not ignorant about what's happening). Doesn't mean I have to think this super long marginally well acted SNL sketch is good.

by Anonymousreply 219December 27, 2021 4:58 AM

and does the movie include the very people who talk about climate change while attending award shows and after parties with flowers and food flown in from all over the world as they are chauffeured around in gas guzzling SUVs and limos and live in mega mansions with imported wood and marble?

by Anonymousreply 228December 27, 2021 6:07 AM

Nick Allen Roger Ebert.com

the movie's editing is complicit in the short attention spans that McKay nonetheless rages against

DLU thinks it's pushing many savvy political buttons, when it's only pointing out the obvious and the easy, over and over again

by Anonymousreply 229December 27, 2021 6:11 AM

An earlier poster hit the nail on the head when they commented that DLU is a farce, a genre that uses over-the-top character portrayals and absurdity in the extreme for plot development, which does not work, IMHO, for the premise of this film, as that approach requires a crude over-simplification of any message. As many here have already stated in some form, the humor is relentlessly ham-fisted and brain dead elementary in a never ending wash, rinse and repeat cycle. The end scene in the dining room is what saves the movie from being a complete failure.

People are also confusing the disdain for this movie as something that people are clearly not getting, when it's exactly the opposite. The message is clear very early on...to the point where you could probably fast forward in 15 minute increments every 10 minutes and not have missed much of anything important.

If DLU was attempting to follow in the footsteps of "Idiocracy" it wasn't dumb enough, and, if it was inspired by "Dr. Strangelove" they should've never stopped worrying that they had a bomb on their hands.

by Anonymousreply 230December 27, 2021 6:50 AM

I was just taking the reaction across the internet at places like Reddit. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie with such a polarized response as this one. Truly, either you loved it or you hated it.

Count me in the loved in column.

by Anonymousreply 231December 27, 2021 7:15 AM

It was great for 45 minutes. And then it just played the same joke over and over and over again.

It would be pretty hard not to "get" the movie. It makes the point and then bashes you over the head with it.

Like a bunch of other bait movies this year, it's far too long without a reason to justify the runtime. I really think it's a product of many of these movies going almost direct to streaming. They're too self-indulgent (Nightmare Alley being the most egregious example I've seen of late).

by Anonymousreply 236December 27, 2021 9:40 AM

I thought the movie was hilarious. I laughed out loud several times. It's a great send up of our current political environment and social media-obsessed culture. Cate Blanchett and Mark Rylance were almost unrecognizable, but hysterically funny.

And I really loved how Jennifer Lawrence's character, throughout the entire movie, continued to be pissed off about the military guy who made everyone pay for free snacks at the White House.

by Anonymousreply 242December 27, 2021 1:43 PM

The film was too long and took too long to get going but when it did it was watchable and funny. Very crude and obvious but no different to the 4 years of a Trump administration. Nowhere near the greatest film I've seen this year but it was enjoyable.

Seemed odd not to reference Deep Impact or Armageddon considering the movie had the same plot.

The performances were all excellent, especially Jennifer Lawrence in the non comedy role. Agree with someone else who said she was better than Gaga in Gucci (I typed that with a wide eyed stare btw) and only disappointed that she didn't correct someone for using she/her pronouns when she clearly uses she/they pronouns. Mark Rylance and Jonah Hill also very good.

by Anonymousreply 243December 27, 2021 2:10 PM

The Jennifer Lawrence character is a somewhat jaded PhD science student, not someone who has time to follow the social media debate over pronouns. She’d probably tell the TERFs and Twitter fighters alike to get a life.

by Anonymousreply 244December 27, 2021 2:18 PM

R237 It took me a half of a movie to recognize Cate Blanchett. I think it was because of fake teeth.

by Anonymousreply 245December 27, 2021 2:24 PM

R243 "she didn't correct someone for using she/her pronouns when she clearly uses she/they pronouns* What are you talking about?

by Anonymousreply 246December 27, 2021 2:26 PM

Jonah Hill usually annoys me, because he plays Jonah Hill in every movie, this one included. But it worked for him in this one. He was excellent as a spoiled, ignorant Donald Trump Jr. type.

by Anonymousreply 247December 27, 2021 2:29 PM

Imagine how good this could have been if they did it in the style of The Naked Gun.

by Anonymousreply 248December 27, 2021 2:32 PM

I liked it. It was very watchable. All the performances were excellent.

The problem is, I'm so exhausted from the MAGA movement and their stupidity and angry mob mentality.

Watching the movie's Don't Look Upper's and climate change deniers, got me a little riled up that it's still going on. I do wish there was an end to it, but not in the way the movie suggested.

"We really did have it all."

by Anonymousreply 249December 27, 2021 2:35 PM

^^^^^ And before I get an Oh Dear from the punctuation police, I know I made an error.

by Anonymousreply 250December 27, 2021 2:37 PM

This movie was so much more entertaining than that "Meet the Ricardos" crap, that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 251December 27, 2021 2:44 PM

Meryl Streep literally proves in this film that when she has no one to mimic, no voice or personality to copy or "base" her character on, she isn't really a major actress at all. She's sitcom material at best.

Seriously, watch her in this, and in some other things, she's done over recent years where she isn't doing a parody of someone. She simply can't act very well at all. She makes Jonah Hill almost tolerable.

by Anonymousreply 252December 27, 2021 2:50 PM

R252 Thanks for weighing in, Glenn.

I loved that bit, too, R237!

by Anonymousreply 255December 27, 2021 3:07 PM

I loved the ending with all the junk flying around in space and Jennifer Lawrence's phone goes floating by with the message, "Your diet is over!"

I believe the funny part is that, if I remember correctly, she didn't even pay for her own snacks. Randall (Leonardo DiCaprio) paid for both of them.

by Anonymousreply 258December 27, 2021 3:14 PM

The most disturbing aspect of Don't Look Up, one that continues to haunt me, is the decision to give a 70+ year old character long hair. Meryl truly is fearless when she takes on a role.

by Anonymousreply 259December 27, 2021 3:16 PM

R252, she did amazing in Death Becomes Her and she wasn’t mimicking anyone.

by Anonymousreply 260December 27, 2021 3:16 PM

J Law gets points for her brave Neo Egyptian styling.

by Anonymousreply 261December 27, 2021 3:17 PM

It's not bad but could've been better. The cast are good but not really Oscar-worthy imo.

by Anonymousreply 262December 27, 2021 3:29 PM

R258 Yes, Leo gave the guy $20 to pay for his stuff and Jennifer Lawrence's.

by Anonymousreply 263December 27, 2021 3:31 PM

I wish they had cast Streisand in Meryl's role. I want the world to remember a time when Barbra was a comedienne.

by Anonymousreply 264December 27, 2021 4:00 PM

I will say, the reactions reinforce the overall point of the movie. If Don't Look Up is an allegory for climate change, we continue with snark, frivolity, and a bunch of other stupid shit while humanity's doom grows nearer. And even though some people are dismissive because they assume they'll be long gone before the situation is at its worse, they'll be crying loudest and hardest if the worst suddenly happens next week.

by Anonymousreply 265December 27, 2021 4:36 PM

R265 and how does human indifference create a meteor? It's not a good metaphor for COVID or climate change. And was the film supposed to induce the feelings of indifference in the audience as it did me,

by Anonymousreply 266December 27, 2021 4:47 PM

R255 is there anything human behavior can do to stop meteors from forming?

by Anonymousreply 267December 27, 2021 4:49 PM

What is the #1 selling vehicle in the US?

Ford F-150.

What do we eat?

Fruits and vegetables grown on commercial farms.

What do we release into our drains everyday?

Various household cleaning products and cosmetics.

I'm complicit and not trying to imply otherwise. However, because we collectively accept political inaction and corporate irresponsibility, nothing changes. Don't Look Up made me think of my own behavior because I read the articles about global warming, rising sea levels, and unbreathable air in large Asian cities...while barely changing my environmentally irresponsible habits.

by Anonymousreply 268December 27, 2021 5:02 PM

R266 If you don't understand that the comet in the movie was a metaphor for COVID and how people react to it, I don't know what to tell you.

by Anonymousreply 269December 27, 2021 5:09 PM

What happened at the dinner table was very similar to how the thousands of victims of Vesuvius were killed in AD79. In Herculaneum they were instantly incinerated by a super-heated pyroclastic flow. Their bones were turned red by the blood of their bodies.

by Anonymousreply 270December 27, 2021 5:13 PM

R266 Human behavior can prevent the spread of COVID or stop the effects of climate change, but a meteor?

by Anonymousreply 271December 27, 2021 5:26 PM

R271, the overvall effects of climate change will be no less catastrophic than a 5 mile comet slamming into the Earth. The thing Don't Look Up should make people consider is the fact that, unlike a comet, humans can actually change their behavior and help prevent a disaster.

by Anonymousreply 272December 27, 2021 5:31 PM

R272 Got it! The movie is a meteocrity and surprisingly a dull end of the world movie. It has no impact,

Hopefully DLU is the in-flight movie on John Kerry's private jet.

by Anonymousreply 274December 27, 2021 5:42 PM

This movie really shook me up. When I was a kid I saw On the Beach and still frightens me when I think of it all these years later. It depressed me, too. I could not help rewatching the last third of it four times. I think most Trump/Q people will watch this and it may be the only thing that gets to them about climate change. In my opinion it is Evangelicalism that is the real cause of climate change denial in this country. Christians believe God have them the earth to populate and exploit. They will not believe that they could damage the earth unless it was God's purpose. They believe the earth is due to be swallowed up in flames to prepare for the return of Christ anyway - and they will somehow be spared.

by Anonymousreply 277December 27, 2021 7:04 PM

In the movie, humanity could've gotten rid of the meteor in the early stages if the tech guru and his loyal servant, the president, had not intervened. The greed of the ruling class was humanity's downfall. And how was it sold to the public? Lucrative jobs. Jobs that were so important, even the parents of Kate (Jennifer Lawrence) chose the promised jobs over their own daughter. Then came the "Don't Look Up" movement to create uncertainty about the threat the meteor was posing, to the point even the existence of the meteor (that was supposed to give people highly lucrative jobs!) was questioned.

The movie was all about the methods of how the public is being manipulated (by the media, like the insipid morning show) and what buttons are being pushed to keep them stupid and obedient, so the ones in power can endanger the entire planet to become rich and more powerful. The President uses the meteor to get her unqualified nominee through congress and make the people forget all about her sexting scandal with said nominee.

Randall's screaming rant about people not being able to come to any common ground, because some denying the basic facts, like the existence of the threat that is the meteor, was quite poignant. Either idiots fell for the lucrative jobs scam or they fell for the "Don't Look Up" scam, owning the elitists scientists and well-educated snobs trying to scare the public by pushing facts on people.

by Anonymousreply 278December 27, 2021 9:58 PM

Lawrence was good. But people hate her because... she is a bit annoying I guess in interviews? Imagine thinking Lawrence is any good in this you say? Tell me how she was bad? Actually don't. What's interesting for me is I can separate what I personally think on a tire and judge the performance. So many people on DL just can't. We hate Jonah Hill because he is fat- he can't act! DiCaprio is over rated and I'm has hit fat- he can't act! Wall to wall dumbs dumbs

by Anonymousreply 279December 27, 2021 10:11 PM

Apologies for all the mis- spellings but was being passionate!

by Anonymousreply 280December 27, 2021 10:27 PM

She's fine, but nothing against her but I grew tired of the constant close-up shots featuring her nose piercing. Like everything else about this film, it seems so redundant.

by Anonymousreply 281December 27, 2021 10:27 PM

It is no masterpiece and could have done with editing for sure. It's very obvious but I have to say I loved the maga and trump parody although it too was obvious

by Anonymousreply 282December 27, 2021 10:52 PM

Subtlety is out the door when one deals with an imminent threat.

And you just know that the Deplorables would've claimed that those idiot Liberals are seeing things that aren't there when discussing the movie if the movie was subtle in any way. Even claiming that the movie makes fun of the weak Liberals who wait too long and waste precious time on negotiating and waiting for bureaucrats and peer reviews.

by Anonymousreply 283December 27, 2021 11:18 PM

That is the problem with climate change deniers. They believe only other people's lives will be affected, because they were stupid enough to live near a coast. Once the ripple effect kicks in, they are, like, "What? aw, man, I wish I had known that sooner that it will hit guys like me in the Midwest, too!".

by Anonymousreply 285December 27, 2021 11:36 PM

This movie is smashing so hard all over the world in every country, and just had the second biggest streaming debut in history, that I think its Oscar chances have shot up dramatically.

Leo, Jennifer, Meryl, Cate, Melanie and Mark all deserve Oscar nominations. Leo's performance was better than Benedict's in Power of the Dog. Jennifer is far better than Gaga in House of Gucci. Mark Rylance and Kodi gave the two best supporting performances of the year. Seriously, Meryl, Cate and Melanie should all be nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

by Anonymousreply 286December 27, 2021 11:42 PM

Is this better than Melancholia?

by Anonymousreply 287December 27, 2021 11:43 PM

No shit it had a huge streaming audience. Look at the damn cast. The acting is fine and very good at points but no one should be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 288December 27, 2021 11:45 PM

I thought some of the jokes didn't completely hit in the first 45 mins or so. I enjoyed it overall. I forgot I was watching Cate Blanchett. She killed that TV persona. And Mark Rylance was good as a Jobs/TimApple/Musk/Gates

by Anonymousreply 289December 27, 2021 11:48 PM

everybody is streaming coz there is nothing else out there right now to watch! not much anyways...a lot of shite!

by Anonymousreply 290December 27, 2021 11:48 PM

Loved Chris Evans' cameo as actor who doesn't want to piss off both sides, so they will see his latest blockbuster movie.

by Anonymousreply 291December 27, 2021 11:55 PM

It cracked me up how they kept saying how HOT Leonardo was - that he became a sex symbol when in fact he looked so gross and awful. But fame makes all straight dudes very fuckable to women I guess and the movie was making a point of that I suppose. IRL that zombie Pete Davidson is getting all kinds of pu*** so it’s not a stretch at all. Still, it made me laugh every time they showed him on magazine covers talking about him being the handsome scientist or whatever.

by Anonymousreply 292December 27, 2021 11:55 PM

Leo was looking heavy. I actually wondered if his gut was a fat suit.

by Anonymousreply 293December 27, 2021 11:57 PM

Where is Gina Gershon in the movie? Is she that crazy lady selling shovels for $1000 a pop?

by Anonymousreply 294December 27, 2021 11:58 PM

r292, that was the PR hype. Making him the sexy, credible face of the crisis to soothe the masses and keep them from panicking. Just look what happened when angry, pissed off Kate tells the patrons at the bar why the strike was called off.

by Anonymousreply 295December 27, 2021 11:59 PM
Leo, Jennifer, Meryl, Cate, Melanie and Mark all deserve Oscar nominations.

Kind of a low bar. Meryl was good but she could pull that off in her sleep. JLaw was fine but not sure she really shined here. Melanie is good. I liked her in one of those Duplass Bros things but she was fine here nothing mind-blowing. I could see 3 or 4 as awards nominees not the whole cast.

by Anonymousreply 296December 28, 2021 12:04 AM

Leo will never play handsome young stud ever again.

by Anonymousreply 297December 28, 2021 12:23 AM

Someone asked if it's better than Melancholia...

The performances in Melancholia are better, but I found it just as absurd as Don't Look Up. I was actually hoping Kirsten Dunst would show up in a cameo, but no such luck. Overall, Don't Look Up is an easier watch, but not worth repeated viewings. Melancholia is slower, but in a way, more thought provoking (not that I don't appreciate the overall point of Don't Look Up).

Coincidentally, the main characters in both films surround themselves with loved ones and patiently wait to be pulverized.

by Anonymousreply 298December 28, 2021 12:32 AM

R288 and no one except the Spiderman Fans are going to theaters as Omicron spreads. DLU and Being the Ricardos make me glad for Netflix and Prime which saved me time and money on 2 over-hyped, underwhelming films that don't sustain interest.

by Anonymousreply 299December 28, 2021 12:58 AM

R286 King Richard, Belfast, West Side Story are not making a killing at the BO or on streaming, but they have a much better chance to be nominated in several major categories and to actually win than DLU!

by Anonymousreply 300December 28, 2021 1:42 AM

R297, he could play a hot daddy gay bear.

by Anonymousreply 301December 28, 2021 2:17 AM

r175. Logan.

by Anonymousreply 302December 28, 2021 2:51 AM

DLU will be nominated for best picture, because they are allowing ten nominees.

I doubt any of the actors will be nominated.

No one cares about King Richard or Being the Ricardos. Zzzzz

by Anonymousreply 303December 28, 2021 3:09 AM

DLU will get a Best Picture nod. So will King Richard. Being the Ricardo’s is up in the air.

King Richard will also get a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress nomination. DLU doesn’t deserve acting nominations.

by Anonymousreply 304December 28, 2021 3:34 AM

R303 King Richard which I haven't seen will probably get nominated for Best Picture, Actor and Supporting Actress and has a better chance than DLU. and has a 75 Metascore as opposed to DLU which has a 50! Even Being the Ricardos (60), House of Gaga (59) and Nightmare Alley (68) have higher Metascores score than DLU! DLU is far from a critical favorite.

by Anonymousreply 305December 28, 2021 3:36 AM

I enjoyed it but the ending took forever. Did the director edit it as well? It needed less clunky, everything but the kitchen sink (almost literally) ending, maybe cut the so-called suspense by two minutes or so before impatience sets in.

The atmosphere they created around the dinner table was nice. I actually bought into DeCaprio's sort of wake up call and heading home with the JLo character, Chalamet's, and then Teddy showing up.

by Anonymousreply 306December 28, 2021 3:40 AM

The absolute end with Jonah Hill was idiotic. He's not as funny as he seems to think.

by Anonymousreply 309December 28, 2021 6:32 AM

I thought Streep was awful. I’m so sick of her. Jessica Lange should have done it.

by Anonymousreply 319December 28, 2021 11:27 AM

It finally happened, folks, Meryl Streep brought absolutely nothing to a role! Her character would've been much more entertaining with Lisa Kudrow, Laura Dern, or even her dear friend Tracy Ullman in the role.

Also, I'd like to think her character is the sister of Susan Orlean in the "Adaptation" Cinematic Universe. It would've been funny if Chris Cooper played the sherrif/Supreme Court nominee/softcore porn actor.

by Anonymousreply 320December 28, 2021 12:28 PM

R298 More apt comparisons would be to Dr. Strangelove or even This is the End (not Melancholia).

I’m struggling to get through this—it’s such a poorly made movie!

by Anonymousreply 321December 28, 2021 12:48 PM

R316 no, asshole. It will be nominated because it’s a great film, and a much better made film than this. I know racists like you like to run your mouths without actually watching the film so just STFU. Not everything needs to be commented on by your racist, wannabe young ass Jon.

by Anonymousreply 322December 28, 2021 12:52 PM

Loved it. It does what is says on the tin, which is to entertain and make you laugh for the duration of it, while COVID still rages outside and many challenges await us in 2022. The acting was superb. Since Titanic, I had forgotten Leo was an actor and this film reminded me of that fact; JLaw, although I can't stand her was also extremely good, and the rest were cool too. I'm sure they had a blast making the film, but what I still can't understand was the presence of Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi. I love him, but I thought both of them were redundant. I also wonder how they landed that gig. So many disparate people you would never imagine could work together, or even know each other. This is Timothee Chalamet's second film with Meryl Streep — I bet he's happy.

I still really think Beanie really deserved a part in this movie.

by Anonymousreply 325December 28, 2021 6:22 PM

Timmy was approached by Adam McKay for the role. Adam has been wanting to work with him and saw this as the perfect opportunity to make that happen. Timmy originally turned it down because there was nothing there. Timmy eventually mentioned something about the film missing some sort of religious aspect, that if the world is ending, they should say a prayer at the dinner table. That was when he took the role, as he would be the one to say the prayer.

by Anonymousreply 326December 28, 2021 6:22 PM

J Law also wanted to work with Timmy, and has been vocal about it for a few years r326. I’m pretty sure that’s why that specific role, where he would be with J Law, was offered to him, on top of McKay wanting to work with him.

by Anonymousreply 327December 28, 2021 6:23 PM

Ugh. That prayer at the table was so cringe. Like religion makes it so much better and manageable that they are all going to die. They were perfectly fine before when they accepted their fate and got together and made dinner.

by Anonymousreply 328December 28, 2021 6:32 PM

It was a beautiful scene. And yes, people would suddenly pray, even those who never do, in a situation like that.

Don’t look up is brilliant. It’s the perfect satire of our times with a 5 star cast at the top of its game. Who cares what critics say anymore? They were blown away by Spencer in Venice when the only good thing about it is KStew’s performance (for which a nom will suffice). They pre-hyped In the Heights as if it was the best musical ever made. They timidly supported The Last Duel which is one of the best pic of the year. They overrated The Power of the Dog which is visually stunning but has a weak screenplay. They praised Belfast which is good but far from Oscar worthy. Branagh could have made a great universal film about the uprooting of communities but he only made a nice little cold forgettable movie with a weak screenplay and a pretentious direction. Last year, they were rooting for Boseman over Hopkins’ historical performance. And so on and so forth.

Again, most critics can’t be trusted anymore. Don’t look up is brilliant. Brilliant cast, brilliant screenplay, great direction and editing.

DLU is a lot more entertaining than Network or Dr. Strangelove. Network is a slog to get through, but I was captivated with DLU for the entire movie, and it's a long one.

I think Melanie Lynsky will get a surprise Oscar nomination. She's the Beatrice Strait of the cast.

I totally agree with R335. I'm not much interested in the debate on this one. I loved this film. Have watched it twice already.

Though I also agree that Meryl Streep brought nothing to her role. She's just a series of faces and movement. Someone will now defend that as her brilliant take on DJT. But no, she just succeed at her gameplan. And Streep always has a gameplan. She couldn't ruin the film, because she was given no scenes without the much better inhabited and inspired performances of Rylance and Jonah Hill.

R320 has some great casting choices. Kudrow or Laura Dern or even Bette Midler would have done something much more inventive with President Orlean. How in the hell did they Make Streep look thin and 60?

I always loved JLaw. Just didn't always love the hype show around her. Nice to see her back just being a great actress. She's compelling without ever being flashy. Totally believable and badass and touching. The hatred against her here is amusing and speaks to the age of most DL posters.

Blanchette succeeded at what Merly attempts. She was every bit of business and it was high showing off just how great she is, and yet we know the Brie is a real person. We've seen her or met her. Cate didn't make her lovable or a villain. She is what she is. Shallow as fuck and about as smart as the average person. But better looking.

by Anonymousreply 347December 29, 2021 6:03 AM

*she just DIDN'T succeed at her gameplan. And Streep always has a gameplan.

by Anonymousreply 348December 29, 2021 6:07 AM

Just realized the billionaire was wrong, DiCaprio's character did not die alone.

That had to be a body double for Meryl's backside.

by Anonymousreply 349December 29, 2021 6:17 AM

Meryl Streep ain't showing her REAL ass for a long shot at a Best Supporting Actress nom. She's kept her wrinkles but that's not her real face. She's been lifted - upper, lower and neck. Nice job too. That insane wig hides the scars. The wig was an inspired choice. Of course a female Trump would have long blonde wavy hair that she was decades too old for and dress in pinstripe suits slutty enough for Streisand to wear during the Clinton years.

by Anonymousreply 350December 29, 2021 7:15 AM

The tech guru was weirdly right about the president's death (how could an algorithm predicted that?), though. Movie magic, I guess.

R329 No, we wouldn't.

by Anonymousreply 352December 29, 2021 9:21 AM
She's been lifted - upper, lower and neck. Nice job too.

I think that was CGI. They may have done the same thing to Cate because she didn't look real to me. I honestly didn't recognize Cate and thought it was another actress. They have been doing a lot of CGI in film. If they can CGI a young Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in The Mandelarian, they can lift and cut a few pounds off of Meryl.

by Anonymousreply 353December 29, 2021 12:56 PM

R353 Cate had fake teeth

by Anonymousreply 354December 29, 2021 1:05 PM

It was more than that, they did something to her face to make her look younger.

by Anonymousreply 355December 29, 2021 1:18 PM

There have been several movies where they've made the younger version of the actor/actress.

Julia Louis Dreyfus > Meryl Streep

Actually Emma Thompson did it so much better as a Trumpy politician type in the British TV series Years and Years.

by Anonymousreply 357December 29, 2021 1:31 PM

When Timothee first came on the scene and JLaw said he was hot and couldn’t wait until he turned 30 so she could make out with him onscreen. I guess she got her wish.

by Anonymousreply 358December 29, 2021 1:37 PM

I read Trumpers discussing how the President was obviously based on Hillary and the dumbass ‘Don’t Look Up’ followers were liberals. God they’re dumb as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 359December 29, 2021 1:40 PM

R359 The "Don't Look Up" people in the movie were all wearing red caps that said "Don't Look Up." You have to be a special kind of stupid to not realize that was a reference to the MAGA cult and their stupid red caps.
That smartphone inventor billionaire was hilarious. He was supposed to be Steve Jobs/Bill Gates/Elon Musk type of weird billionaire nerd businessman.

by Anonymousreply 362December 29, 2021 2:25 PM

I thought that Rylance did a great job at being slightly autistic- he never really looks into the person's eyes that he's speaking to, as well as the stilted speaking cadence.

Cate had the newscaster spackle special- loads of bronzer, probably more makeup on her that we've ever seen. It's also possible that they put lifts on her too. The fake teeth would help plump out her nasiolabial lines, like what they did for Matt Damon for, "Behind the Candleabra"- they're actually called, "Dental Plumpers".

by Anonymousreply 363December 29, 2021 2:34 PM

They didn’t do anything to Meryl’s face. You conspiracy people are nuts.

by Anonymousreply 366December 29, 2021 3:16 PM

I feel like there's some symbolism there at the very end. It's like all the survivors arrive on a new Eden, naked no less, ready to partake in its fruit, but instead of being young, innocent, and beautiful, they're all greedy, old, and fat.

Like they're already spoiled or something.

by Anonymousreply 367December 29, 2021 3:36 PM

R367 Not all of them. There were some fine tight asses and bodies in that final scene. But yes, I do think it was a Garden of Eden metaphor - the first people to inhabit a planet.

by Anonymousreply 368December 29, 2021 3:38 PM

I'm surprised they didn't have a large number of younger people in the survival ship- all those old people really can't procreate.

by Anonymousreply 369December 29, 2021 3:51 PM

Why do you think they added the young people?

by Anonymousreply 370December 29, 2021 3:54 PM

Agree with the Streep criticisms.

I think she let her disgust for Trump ( and the Mariana Trench couldn’t contain all that he deserves and earned when it come to disgust) get in the way of a better performance.

While watching her I remembered her feud with him for his ridiculing a disabled person and then him tweeting she is “overrated”.

I honestly think she was taking so much glee in skewering him with her character that she let it obscure, even prevent, a better performance.

by Anonymousreply 371December 29, 2021 3:56 PM

I thought the message was powerful and on target, the the execution as a film was really messy: too many "moments" that didn't cohere. Perhaps better editing could have solved it, but I think this was a un-direct-able" cast (apart from Leo, but even his "ticks" were too much).

by Anonymousreply 372December 29, 2021 4:05 PM
I'm surprised they didn't have a large number of younger people in the survival ship- all those old people really can't procreate.

Easy. High value donors get a spot on the ark.

by Anonymousreply 373December 29, 2021 4:12 PM

r373, yes I realized that with all the pods labeled what industry they represent, but it was poor planning, as it's not enough people to foster a civilization, much less one that will likely be inbred in 2-3 generations.

by Anonymousreply 374December 29, 2021 4:19 PM

It's still not clear to me what exactly critics are lambasting it for.

by Anonymousreply 375December 29, 2021 4:19 PM

R362, who speaks four languages?

by Anonymousreply 376December 29, 2021 4:19 PM

Streep’s role (per her and McKay) was intended to be a combination of several recent Presidents.

by Anonymousreply 378December 29, 2021 4:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 381December 29, 2021 4:37 PM

I enjoyed the movie but got a little bored about half way through and went to bed. Finished it the next day.

The only obvious editing problem I noticed was at the dinner scene when DiCaprio's character is holding his wife's hand with the other on his son's shoulder and in the next scene he's clasping his own hands.

by Anonymousreply 382December 29, 2021 4:42 PM

In this movie the reason was given that the rich can afford to escape the mess they have created. It was very deliberate that we saw the way these people made their money on their cryogenic chamber pods.

by Anonymousreply 391December 29, 2021 6:04 PM

I think those who saw this on Saturday or Sunday lucked out.

We saw it last night and were inevitably disappointed since everyone was talking about what a funny and satirical movie it was.

Expectations were too high. Didn’t find laugh much. Didn’t really rise to the level of satire.

Perhaps I’d i had gone into it expecting Deep Impact or Independence Day, I would have been pleasantly surprised.

I thought it was fine. But not good enough to warrant two different almost-full threads here and trend on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 393December 29, 2021 6:21 PM

I agree, this was a curiously lackluster performance from Streep. Any of the actresses mentioned, Lisa Kudrow, Tracy Ullman, Julia L-D, or Laura Dern would have brought more to it.

Jonah Hill was completely unbelievable as a child of Streep’s, but quite successful at being Dumbo Jr.

It would be a shame if the Oscars give a stunt nomination to Rita Moreno and deprive Melanie or Cate of a nomination for their excellent performances.

Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” is the only notable movie NOT to send SAG any screeners. A bold move on the part of Spielberg/Disney, forcing members to pay for their own tickets. A plan that could easily backfire.

by Anonymousreply 398December 29, 2021 8:09 PM

Awards no longer really matter. I'm sure they do to Streep - but not to this film. It's a bit of of a phenom.

In real life they could've nuked the meteor and the tech billionaire could've sent his own drones to mine the splintered fragments of the meteor in space. And it could've happened all on the downlow without any other country knowing (if the US president is covering all up or explains it as some follow-up mission, or missions, to make sure the meteor is no longer a threat).

But that wouldn't be the message the movie wanted to send.

Good point, r349. But it showed that a dire warning CAN make people change course. Here, the Leo character was bummed at the thought of dying alone, so he went back home, and averted the bad fortune that the billionaire foretold.

Everyone else ignored the bad news about a comet coming, and it never changed course. BANG.

by Anonymousreply 426December 30, 2021 2:35 AM

I loved the Bon Iver song too. Haven't sought out a song from a movie so fast since Pretty Little Lies, "Cold Heart." The score in the last 30 minutes of the film is such an integral part to how moving the film becomes for 25 minutes. It is meant to be bearable - because the world ends just like that. What would you really do? The making dinner scene was so low key and normal and feels like an improvised night with family and friends with a bit more wine than usual. Leo's line about we really did kind of have it all was improvised, according to the director. Then they shot it a few more times. It's very understated at the table - for the audience it is profound. McKay refuses to be sentimental for long or much - so he relies on his actors to bring on the soulfulness and ugly humanity. The Chalamet prayer was JUST right. The idiot upthread who said this would never happen in real life - wasn't watching the movie. Dr. Mindy just suggested they say Amen. His wife deflected and said you know I don't know anything about religion. They weren't embracing faith as much as they were trying to find words to make their last moments of life meaningful and conversational. Chalamet didn't do a dumb Keanu Reeves impersonation - he channelled the experience of his youth and what we already learned about him in earlier exchange with Jennifer Lawrence. That he was raised evangelical but found his own way to believe. He mumbled to her that he was embarrassed. So though they did indeed "pray" - He never once used the word god or jesus in his prayer. It was beautifully written and delivered by his character with focus. Not above his grade - but from deep inside. It's a great and needed moment, so then they continue on to talk about store bought apple pie and grinding your own beans.....just like people might do as the world ends. Everyone in THAT room carried the extra burden and peace of knowing it really was about to happen. Yes, Rob Morgan was gay. It wasn't important to the story, but we see and know. It's a masterful scene. They are not all family. They are familiar.

The only joke that almost worked was the minor one with the payoff in the finale mid-credits scene (not the post-credits scene, which was stupid and pointless).

Of course, part of the reason it wasn't funny is that it was too close to reality.

I can't really recommend it though. It tried to be this generation's Dr Strangelove meets Idiocracy... but it's not. It's not insightful or significant enough. It's facile.

I'm impressed with "DLU". I watched it twice because I wanted to give it a fair shot.

Except for some individual performances, I didn't find it funny because it captured exactly how fucked-up we are.

I got a kick out of Cate Blanchett. Unlike Streep, she made it seem effortless parodying FOX News blondes and mass media morning programs.

And I'm in the minority here but I liked Jonah Hill's performance, too.

by Anonymousreply 447December 31, 2021 1:28 AM

R447 And I thought you had good taste. So disappointed in you, Della.

by Anonymousreply 448December 31, 2021 4:07 AM

Della pretty much mirrored my own post upthread. Why is she always so apologetic for going against the white DL elders? Weird.

But Della, what makes you think that Blanchett was parodying FOX news blondes? I'd say she was more Mika and Kelly Ripa than anyone on Fox. This is not a partisan movie. It's a fucking wake up and shake up to anyone who can receive the message. Nothing about Blanchett's character was evil or conniving. She was vapid and well groomed. Someone we see everyday on TV anyday from the local weather girl to co host on GMA. I didn't view Tyler Perry or Brie as being at all political. If anything they are most likely Democrats. As radical as Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper.

Don't Look Up is not just a shot at Trump and Republicans. DL is full or dull old farts in mental ruts. Including Della with her weird Angelina Jolie obsession. I've never heard of Dr. Strangelove? Why should I.

This movie is about something else. Everyone should see themselves in it. And be a bit shook.

by Anonymousreply 449December 31, 2021 4:31 AM
47 isn't almost 50

No, but it’s certainly old enough to have sons in their mid-20s.

by Anonymousreply 450December 31, 2021 4:42 AM

I'm watching it now. It feels like it's never going to end.

I can be forgiving of imperfect projects, but this one isn't good. It's very weird; it feels suited to its release alongside Being the Ricardos. AAA-plus stars are slumming it in poorly written and directed projects.

At least this one has a good moral, I guess, but it feels like a didactic, artless and uninspired take on 'Melancholia,' with deeply felt psychology being swapped out for witless sarcasm and uncreative direction. And there's no good reason for it to be so long and self-indulgent. I zoned out during Jennifer Lawrence's tryst wirh Timothée, and I am writing this during an Ariana Grande mini-concert that did not need to take up screen time.

Network is a brilliant satire. It feels urgent, like it's heading toward a catastrophe throughout and it gets laughs out of the mounting pressure. Thank You For Smoking is over the top and alarming, another effective satire. This movie has too many characters with too many B-storylines meandering all over the place for it to feel urgent, and I don't find the writing funny at all. Lawrence complaining about paying for free snacks while a deadly comet approaches? Har har...in a middle-school writing assignment, maybe.

A for drawing attention to ignorance and governmental neglect if existential crises, but D for execution if it is supposed to wake us up or to be funny. It seems like it is reaching for both but doesn't accomplish either.

To be scary, it would have to bear some semblance to reality. News hosts would NEVER forgo an approaching doomsday scenario for a pop star interview. Are you kidding? If it bleeds, it leads, and newscasters make "storms" out of partly cloudy days and try to convince us every night that murderers and rapists abound outside our houses. If Don Lemon were in the movie collecting obsessive, terrified cult members and obsessing over minute-by-minute "breaking news" about the comet with details that never changed, that would be a lot closer to reality, funnier and scarier.

Network is a perfect example of News Anchors, Networks and the PUBLIC not covering important REAL news to capitalize on a well known "personalities" psychotic break. Till death.

Your post is full of contradictions, hypocrisy and nonsense R451. You're not watching Don't Look Up right now at all.

I can tell you hate Jen Lawrence though. Are you over 80 years old and a bit drunk tonight?

All of you commenting on Leo's' paunchy body and lack of sex appeal - had you ever considered that perhaps Leo packed on a few pounds purposely for this role? He's playing a schlubby scientist who's riddled with anxieties and loaded up on meds, according to the wife. The 'sexy scientist' promotion is because he still has an attractive face that works against type.

by Anonymousreply 456December 31, 2021 5:18 AM

R456 This is from 2014. It's not for the movie. DiCaprio has modeled himself on Brando—haartthrob 20-something who fucks anything that moves who grew into a big smooshy hairy lump who wants to save the world.

Leo is 47. Why are people expecting him to look like a fitness model? He looks fine.

by Anonymousreply 458December 31, 2021 5:27 AM

The closest he ever got to 'fitness model' was in The Beach, and that wasn't close.

If we have to classify body types, he made a seamless transition from twink to bear with no gym bunny or wolf phase in between.

If someone made a tweet like that about an actress there would be outrage.

by Anonymousreply 461December 31, 2021 5:36 AM

Can he act? Was he believable and inventive as Dr. Mindy? Does no one understand that he wasn't meant to be "sexy" but he was in contrast to the "insane bitch" that Lawrence was labelled as. So because Dr. Mindy was nerdy and steady with the information and had a full head of greasy hair - the media labelled him as "sexy". Get it. Then it became virtually true. Like many men he was bestowed an moniker that he didn't in anyway live up to. In bed with Blanchette - he's wearing a t shirt of course. And he needs a lot of meds to function.

I've read DL poster call Dr. Fauci SEXY. Same phenom. You need his reassurance. Ha.

Leo Dicaprio never appealed to me. Snub nosed white boy with no great features. He's older and thick and hedonistic or he gained a few pounds for the role? Who cares. Leo has proven to be a very adventurous actor and also very a very good one. He never wanted to be boxed in as a leading man glamor dude. But he can play one.

I found him most appealing in Don't Look Up. His warmth and passion and ordinary guy attractiveness.

by Anonymousreply 462December 31, 2021 5:36 AM

Whoops! Also forgot about his role as 'Connor.'

by Anonymousreply 464December 31, 2021 5:41 AM

His personal life is not what he's playing onscreen, R464. Who cares? Leo is an actor being judged like an actress. By YOU. His loss of youth has nothing to do with his talent or the interesting challenges he fully invested himself in, as an ACTOR. Appreciate him for that. Leo is fucking admirable and surprising in his choices. He never marketed himself as a himbo. Never.

Try doing this with a worthy actress too. Appreciate their WORK.

by Anonymousreply 465December 31, 2021 5:50 AM

R464 A lot of those “relationships” were PR. Like Blake Lively was absolutely a PR relationship, and she dumped Leo for Ryan Reynolds.

Comment from Awardswatch about Leo’s dating life:

“Leo will only publicly date white girls in their early 20s, but in private his tastes are broader than that. Like he was 100% hooking up with Rihanna, she was already 27 when that fling started and it lasted for a couple of years after that.“

by Anonymousreply 466December 31, 2021 5:58 AM

R466 Rihanna is worth $1.7 billion. Let's see him date a middle-class woman of color over 25.

by Anonymousreply 467December 31, 2021 6:01 AM

R467 Leo dated Naomi Campbell and Kidada Jones in the late 90s.

by Anonymousreply 468December 31, 2021 6:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 469December 31, 2021 6:25 AM

I still enjoy the look of amused disdain that DiCaprio gave to Gaga when she swanned past him at the Golden Globes. He knows a fraud. Leo Dicaprio never puts on a show at public events. He doesn't smear on Movie Star charm like George Clooney or pose all night like Brad Pitt. You can tell he hates most of it. I think he's a pretty fine and serious actor. He's not always been right or great or believable in his roles - but he continues to push himself and to take chances. He has a diverse and pretty fine film resume. He's extremely good in Don't Look Up.

by Anonymousreply 477December 31, 2021 1:51 PM

R477 Planet of the Apes was a dramatic thriller. Don't Look Up is a dark comedy.

by Anonymousreply 478December 31, 2021 1:52 PM

Well I laughed.

I was in the mood for cheesy end of the world farce and got it.

If you're able to buy into the movie as a surreal nightmare it makes sense, though I understand the digs that real TV news would never pass up a disaster this big.

by Anonymousreply 479December 31, 2021 2:10 PM

R478 but the subject matter of both is ultimately serious regardless of the approach. And Planet of the Apes is more amusing than DLU which isn't funny... DLU has a low Metascore of 50 while Apes has a 79.

by Anonymousreply 480December 31, 2021 2:25 PM

R480 You can't compare the two. You could make a case for comparing Don't Look Up to Dr. Strangelove, since they're both dark satires, but not Planet of the Apes.

I love Planet of the Apes, and I loved Don't Look Up, but for very different reasons.

R486 Of course he is into men..because you say so.

by Anonymousreply 490December 31, 2021 5:45 PM

While I watched this movie, I kept imagining that someone watched Melancholia and didn't get it at all and had an idea that they'd make a "better" movie by being explicit about the scientific aspect of an impending impact on Earth while trying to "wake people up," and this mess was the result.

As I watched, I thought that that was probably just my imagination speculating overtime because Melancholia is one of my favorite movies...then the ending was delivered in super slow-mo with the characters all sitting in a ring and holding hands and I realized that my theory is probably right.

It feels like a person with a big holier-than-though attitude and limited creative spark decided to make a "better" version of Melancholia and embarrassed themself in trying to do so.

by Anonymousreply 491December 31, 2021 5:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 499December 31, 2021 7:12 PM

R493 I'd be shocked if DLU received any Oscar nominations in the acting category. 5 actors from Network were nominated 5 with nominations in all 4 acting categories and 3 of those won. It would be a joke if DLU received Best 'Original' Screenplay as it has been compared to Deep Impact, Melancholia and Armageddon. by Anonymousreply 508January 1, 2022 1:19 AM

My interpretation is that Cate and Tyler are NOT right or left hosts - the are insanely fake hosts. Both sides of the aisle are being skewered and deserve it.

by Anonymousreply 509January 1, 2022 1:44 AM

R509 True! February 2020 as COVID was spreading the news media distracted us with the Super Bowl, the Oscars and J-Lo's Oscar snub, Kobe Bryant's death and memorial with 20K in attendance, the Iowa caucus, Trump's impeachment and in the Democratic debates where Pocahontas focused on Bloomberg's NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) more than anything else.

by Anonymousreply 510January 1, 2022 1:56 AM

They aren't really "news" they are "hosts". Just like in real life! Its about all media not only "news media". Sooooooooo GLOSSY and upbeat, high vibration. Cate was the best performance in the movie, her character was very on the nose and deplorable. Leo was good too. It comes together when he has the breakdown and is himself screaming on air, like his grad student Llaw did at the start of the movie. Tyler's look at Leo's fear and anger and loss of "media cool" was devastating.

by Anonymousreply 511January 1, 2022 2:18 AM

R455 Why are they naked?

by Anonymousreply 512January 1, 2022 5:16 AM

The last scene is purposefully awkward, I hope. Did y'all miss that it was thousands of years later? They're naked for our enjoyment - because they are wealthy, greedy, venal, privileged & cruel - with old white bodies. The scene doesn't quite work, but it's still fun. The algorithm didn't guide them to the totally right place. They are dumb and dumbfounded. Meryl reaches out fast to something pretty and it snaps her dumb head off. A few thousand years frozen. It's a crude joke, but enjoyable. A bit of cheap reprimand after that brilliant last dinner scene.

The dinner scene alone makes this a great film.

by Anonymousreply 513January 1, 2022 6:01 AM

R512 The director just desperately wanted to see Meryl Streep's naked body.

by Anonymousreply 514January 1, 2022 6:04 AM

R513 Thanks. So, like the astronauts in Planet of the Apes, they went forward in time though they didn't age. Wouldn't they want clothing and footwear or something for protection? It seemed like this scene was an afterthought.

by Anonymousreply 515January 1, 2022 6:13 AM
with old white bodies.

There were POC in that scene, and many were young.

by Anonymousreply 516January 1, 2022 6:30 AM

R515 The scene was literally an afterthought, slapped in between end credits. And naked Meryl was eaten by a silly looking alien animal, so it obviously was not meant to be taken seriously at all.

by Anonymousreply 517January 1, 2022 6:37 AM

I liked the movie, didn't love it, but liked it a lot. It's a very clever social satire of our current culture.

One thing tho, I would have like if they had also made digs to other nations (ig. China, Russia, etc.) and the wokesters. For example they could have shown a woke character insist on pronouns, etc. even on the face of human extinction.

by Anonymousreply 518January 1, 2022 7:43 AM

R508 So Cate was scarily convincing as a Fox News hostess even though she wasn't parodying a Fox News hostess?

by Anonymousreply 519January 1, 2022 9:11 AM

RE: Oscar chances.

Bette Midler loved it. She's a voting member of AMPAS.

The movie has a good chance in screenplay. And being "topical" and "industry-friendly" will help it. It could show up in editing as well. It probably needs support from other branches to get into Picture.

DiCaprio could slide into a nomination. I wouldn't bet on it. But, it's possible. Only four of the slots there feel like locks to me.

One of the film's misfires is not having a slam-dunk male supporting role, for which the category is super weak this year. Belfast and The Power of the Dog each have a pair of actors ahead of most everyone else, but none of those performances are super strong. Jonah Hill was good (and I hate saying that), but he hasn't shown up in any of the precursors.

Perhaps Streep can hoodwink the Academy into throwing her another bone, like she has so many times in the past. But, she failed to deliver a performance that set her apart from the ensemble (and I'd argue DiCaprio, Hill, and even Lawrence all made more effective/sensible choices than her, considering the material). Her category isn't as strong as Actress, but it's telling that the Globes took a pass on her (they've nominated her 32 times across mediums and the only time she got into the Oscar race without the Globes was Ironweed back in 1987).

by Anonymousreply 520January 1, 2022 11:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 527January 1, 2022 3:41 PM

Wil Wheaton loved it. Here's his review:

"I'm usually pretty late to the party on good art, whether it's movies or a series or an album. I always feel like I'm the last person in the world to discover something.

But this time, I think we're close enough to the beginning of the party to recommend something that I suspect some large number of you haven't seen.

Anne and I watched Don't Look Up a few nights ago, and we loved it. It's an uncomfortably dark and relevant satire that was created entirely before the pandemic. (Quick edit to add: I mean the primary writing and development process. It was filmed, edited, etc., during the pandemic.)

I mention that oddly-specific bit of information because when you watch it, you will see lots of places where it feels like the entire movie is about Covid.

But it isn't. I mean, it is, and it's about climate change and it's about vapid cable news talkers who do not deserve the trust they abuse and exploit. It's about delusional, stupid people being manipulated and exploited by selfish, evil people.

So it's, you know, really about America since about 2016, and it was so incisive then, it managed to satirize something that hadn't even happened when it was made.

Parts of is are SO UNCOMFORTABLE and other parts are so funny, but ultimately when it was over Anne and I just looked at each other and went, "Ffffffuuuuuuuccccckkkk" because it just feels a little too relevant. The performances are magnificent. And I didn't know until this morning that a lot of the actors were in wigs, which I guess is a thing now? Or maybe it's always been and I'm just noticing it now? Anyway, they are all fantastic. Jonah Hill just kills it.

It won't be for everyone, but if it lands on you, I suspect it will *really* land on you."

by Anonymousreply 528January 1, 2022 4:14 PM

Sarandon, Rosie, Midler and Wheaton all like the film and probably think the movie will save the world!

Did we watch the same movie? I thought the subtext was so forced and so obvious that it lacked all the punch it was meant to have.
The performances are magnificent.

The serviceable writing and direction squandered great talent potential. The performances are not magnificent.
And I didn't know until this morning that a lot of the actors were in wigs, which I guess is a thing now? Or maybe it's always been and I'm just noticing it now?

Not saying you're right or wrong because it's all subjective, r538, but, I'm a huge Rylance fan from seeing his Thomas Cromwell in "Wolf Hall"'

He was superb. He did all the work for me of absorbing the story just through his eyes and face, no dialog from him, when he was eavesdropping on court gossip, forcing it out of somebody. or receiving it from someone.

Again, it's all subjective experience, but I don't know how anybody could view his performance in "Wolf Hall" and not see him being Cromwell.

The satire in this film doesn't work at all in its treatment of Covid. In reality, there were Republicans who didn't take Covid seriously and Democrats who cared only about the appearance of doing something. That's what I thought they were going for initially until the stupid Don't Look Up rallies. In the real world, Republicans think Democrats are the ones who are anti science because they prioritize the vaccine with it's waning efficacy overall treatments and who idolize a man who was previously responsible for pulling life saving drugs off the market during the peak of the AIDS pandemic. Not very nuanced messaging in this movie. A total fail.

by Anonymousreply 545January 2, 2022 3:55 PM

Also ironic that they chose not to mine the comet instead of nuke it. You have Republicans think that denying alternative treatments in favor of a vaccine only approach is prolonging the pandemic in order to make Pfizer rich. So of course those who are being made fun of in this movie are going to assume that the left should be the target of the satire. This movie will change no one's mind.

Streep was terrible in this movie. In fact, pretty much the entire cast was awful....hammy and over indicating 'See?!!! Look???!!! I'm doing SATIRE!!!!!'

DiCaprio was ok-ish....though he was underplaying it so much it became overkill so almost as bad as all the hams overdoing it (Streep, Rylance, the truly awful Jonah Hill).

Which brings me to : "How the fuck did Jonah the Whale become a famous film star?"

He's a terrible actor and creepily unattractive both in physicality and manner. He always comes across as an over entitled douche canoe in every thing he does including real life.

God's Chosen

by Anonymousreply 552January 3, 2022 12:04 AM

It's ironic that the creators of Don't Look Up are also caricatures in the crisis. Obama got the globe to sign a climate change agreement. Trump abandoned it. Don't look at that difference. Biden's pushing climate change legislation that the GOP opposes. Don't look at that either.

The Paris Climate Accord is in no way perfect, but it was still a big deal. And Build Back Better would also make a big difference. Both are more meaningful than a star-studded film. Yet the climate warriors behind that film are actively discouraging advocating for such action.

"Don't Look Up" satirized politicians' response to climate change, as well as the press's. Maybe it would have been a more successful satire if it had included political hipsters. Those who believe posturing in favor of a good cause is more valiant than actually fighting for it.

"Paris Climate & Build Back Better aren't enough." No, they're not. But if you cared about climate, you would acknowledge these measures exist & then propose improvements. You wouldn't say those who are fighting an imperfect fight & those who suppress the fight are the same.

I just watched it a few days ago. After i realized it was satire, i enjoyed it. Who does Mark Rylance channeling as his character as the billionaire? He was great.

by Anonymousreply 554January 4, 2022 11:03 PM

Steve Jobs/Elon Musk/Bill Gates/Richard Branson/Jeff Bezos mix?

by Anonymousreply 555January 5, 2022 11:02 AM

R551, Jonah Hill can only be typecast. He was perfectly so in this.

by Anonymousreply 556January 5, 2022 11:04 AM

Biden sounded a lot like Rylance in this movie during his last press conference.

Molly's kicking in right now. I timed that shit perfectly for the end of the thread.

by Anonymousreply 559January 5, 2022 9:22 PM

R558 Daily Mail has caught on to what exactly? Where are they calling him gay? Or is every single guy that has a male friend automatically gay to you?

by Anonymousreply 560January 5, 2022 9:24 PM

R560, you sound aggrieved at someone suggesting Leo might be gay? You do realise what the DL is, right?

by Anonymousreply 561January 5, 2022 9:28 PM

Just because Leo likes to hang out with his lifelong bruh and best friend doesn't automatically mean he's chosen a homosexual lifestyle. He is not effeminate or even very well groomed. More points against his being gay. He's very talented. Maybe the best of the last 25 years. Depp and Cruise and Christian Bale get the accolades. Leo is first and foremost an actor. With a great resume. He has a natural speaking voice and no exaggerated facial expressions or lisp in real life. He has not chosen to be gay IMO. When Leo does clean up he wears classic conservative attire of other classy men like Cary Grant or George Clooney. Black tux and shiny shoes. Slicked back hair. There is nothing colloquial or trendy about Leo DiCaprio. He has that earnest and mild bad boy straight kinda charm. He doesn't seem to have been practicing in the mirror his whole life like so many homosexuals. DiCaprio has the reputation of playboy but appears to be a serial monogamist. Non verbal and no funny faces. Most gay men couldn't even pretend to be like him.

by Anonymousreply 562January 6, 2022 2:43 AM

Oh lord, the "afflicted with homosexuality" troll. Were you dropped on your head as a child, R562? If you are a gay man you must be ancient, nearing 100.

by Anonymousreply 563January 6, 2022 5:50 AM

r562 is the insane "ancient white fags" troll who plagues this board. Just ignore him.

by Anonymousreply 564January 6, 2022 5:51 AM

^ The Ancient white RACIST Fag.^ We are all fighting R564. He is the vilest poster on DL. So many accounts with hundreds of posts a day. His influence remains t i n y. He's a master of HATE Speech. Dirty in his diaper. Illegal in most states.

May Jesus visit healing to your diseased body and troubled mind this night, R 564. Amen.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

by Anonymousreply 565January 6, 2022 5:59 AM

R562/r565 is a good example of the kind of trash that has really dumbed down DL.

by Anonymousreply 566January 6, 2022 6:02 AM

R564 is always stocking posters on the datalounge. He follows things we say and comes later to betray himself and accuse others of the most dumb things. This poster is to pitied. In my home language we say - why argue with a dead man?

R564 has many accounts here - but says nothing of value. He posts all HATE and all racist thoughts. OLD queer ideas. Lots of strange fixations. We must report him, again.

R562 is bold. Make good points. Funny. Gay men don't lisp anymore though. Maybe R564 does! He loves John Mulaney. A lady.

by Anonymousreply 567January 6, 2022 6:13 AM

R567 Are you in Russia or some other former Soviet republic?

by Anonymousreply 568January 6, 2022 6:17 AM

Are you that old man/lady R568?🎵🔨🍆

by Anonymousreply 569January 6, 2022 6:30 AM

I saw Brie/Cate more as a Kelly Ripa (along with Tyler’s Michael Strajan), a talk show host, not a political commentator or Fox News nimbo - the latter don’t bring pop stars to their TV shows. So bringing up left ir right to their performance is irrelevant. Kathy Lee leans right, Kelly leans left, yet neither brings politics into their job, which is getting people who are at home at 10:00 am to watch them.

They’re just shallow fluff tv programming.

by Anonymousreply 570January 6, 2022 8:41 AM

R570 But didn't their show seem political? I can't imagine Kelly Ripa bringing an astrophysicist onto her show once much less to make him a regular. The woman is friends with Andy Cohen, for God's sake. Daytime talk shows on broadcast networks don't seem to go above third-grade education and interest levels.

by Anonymousreply 571January 6, 2022 10:55 AM

Adam McKay is really winning right now with Succession and Don't Look Up.

by Anonymousreply 572January 6, 2022 2:26 PM

It's the big team of A-list stars plus the end-of-days scenario that have attracted the masses. Both of those are proven ways to draw people's attention.

Unfortunately, it's still not a good movie. The concept is fine, but the implementation is incredibly clunky. If it wins awards, they will be awarded by industry insiders for aggressive campaigning and for ratings/revenue with the unspoken understanding that the movie doesn't really deserve awards for quality.

The reviews are already logged and they speak for themselves.

Fifty percent at Metacritic and 54 percent at Rotten Tomatoes. Sixty percent and under was a failing grade in my school system.

by Anonymousreply 573January 6, 2022 2:37 PM

82% audience score. Still in Netflix top ten.

by Anonymousreply 574January 8, 2022 5:12 AM

Don't Look Up is the most screened Movie in Netflix history.

by Anonymousreply 575January 8, 2022 5:27 AM

R574 R575 and Spider Man topped $1 billion over the Christmas weekend! Does that mean it's good or that it will be Oscar-nominated? DLU was free with a Netflix subscription, and you didn't have to go to a theater to see it.

by Anonymousreply 576January 8, 2022 7:32 AM

Just watched it. A bit long in the mddle. Meryl was hilarious. Liked DiCaprio and Lawrence. Overall, 8.5 to 8 out of 10. The hate seems more fashion than substance.

by Anonymousreply 577January 9, 2022 6:55 PM

R577 the film has no substance which probably explains the 49 Metascore and the 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Those are failing grades and the lowest scores of any film that is considered a potential Oscar nominee in any category!

by Anonymousreply 578January 10, 2022 2:29 AM

It was a comedy, not a documentary. I found it amusing on a Sunday afternoon. 78% from viewers on RT.

by Anonymousreply 579January 10, 2022 2:32 AM

It's a black comedy at that. The critics dislike it because it exposes the vapid emptiness of media as much as anything else. The movie is not a masterpiece but it is funny and has a virtuoso end scene. I'm not convinced the credit coda did it any favors. Most people I know liked it for what it was and everyone saw a glimpse of themself in it. Our useless obsession with celebrities and sharing our opinions while the world burns and fascists rise.

by Anonymousreply 580January 10, 2022 2:41 AM

It was fun to watch at home. When it got dull, I did the dishes. I would have walked out if I paid money to see it in a theatre. Some of the satire hit the mark and the actors were pretty good. Jonah Hill was the MVP as the douchebag.: The problem was the script. Not grounded enough to really work as a satire.

by Anonymousreply 581January 10, 2022 2:48 AM

It’s a modern classic. Audiences don’t care about critics.

by Anonymousreply 582January 10, 2022 2:49 AM

But do they care about R578? Because she has stated our boundaries.

by Anonymousreply 583January 10, 2022 2:56 AM

For a comedy, I didn't laugh even once. It was a little too obvious and heavy-handed.

by Anonymousreply 584January 10, 2022 2:59 AM

You honestly didn't even get one laugh out of watching Streep?

by Anonymousreply 585January 10, 2022 3:05 AM

Nope.

by Anonymousreply 586January 10, 2022 3:07 AM

Preachy elite drivel. It is supremely unfunny and annoying

by Anonymousreply 587January 10, 2022 3:09 AM

R580 yet Network which also skewers the media has an 83 Metascore and 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 588January 10, 2022 3:22 AM

Space journalist and frequent "Ancient Aliens" guest Amy Shira Teitel appears to have been an influence for the Jennifer Lawrence character.

I liked the beginning of the movie, then it dragged a bit, but overall not the worst I’ve seen.

One part that had me laughing was when Leo went on Sesame Street the second time and the puppet asked him, “We’re all going to be okay, right?” And Leo responds “Every man, woman, and child on Earth is going to die!”

by Anonymousreply 590January 10, 2022 3:47 AM

Network is a very ponderous film that hasn't aged well. Not unlike Dunaway and William Holden and Peter Finch's performance. It's not a hit with audiences and never was.

by Anonymousreply 591January 10, 2022 4:06 AM

^ Network is a fucking boring and LOUD movie. Incredibly self important.

by Anonymousreply 592January 10, 2022 4:14 AM

R592 ditto DLU!

by Anonymousreply 593January 10, 2022 4:54 AM

R591Network was very popular and much discussed film at the time of release and the phrase "I'm mad as hell . . ." entered into the culture. And yes, it was a hit with audiences.

by Anonymousreply 594January 10, 2022 4:56 AM

R594, It wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 595January 10, 2022 5:03 AM

R595 It was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 4 a number that DLU won't come near. And decades from now will DLU be remembered:

'feels as savagely relevant now as it did when it was released nearly 40 years ago' -Times (UK) 2015

'The film's never been more timely'- Entertainment Weekly 2011

'Remains as relevant as ever decades after its release'-The Hollywood Reporter 2016

by Anonymousreply 596January 10, 2022 5:12 AM

The more I think about it, the less I like it. I enjoyed the performances, the editing was a mess and the screenplay is as self-congratulatory as all get out, but not very smart.

I was hoping for a good dark comedy, but this one is all over the place and doesn't really hit its targets. I think there are ton of issues with big tech having too much power, but as a group, they are pro-science, know how to calculate odds and see green technology as an opportunity. Meanwhile, the film manages to completely ignore the actual baddies--big oil. And because both Sirota and McKay are sulky Bernie Bros, they don't have the guts to pick a political side--and pretty much use the Meryl Streep character to conflate Trump and Hillary Clinton.

It's a cop-out.

by Anonymousreply 597January 10, 2022 7:50 AM

The movie’s biggest flaw - ramblingly long - can easily be corrected in these modern streaming times. That’s why it’s still very popular with Netflix viewers. I simply fast forwarded all of Ariana Grande’s performance and Leo’s long-assed meltdown. I respect both of them and their talents but those moments were simply not needed.

by Anonymousreply 598January 10, 2022 7:52 AM

I watched it because I wanted to enjoy a well-made movie with star power. It did have star power, but it just wasn't that good, but that's been true of every Oscar bait movie I've watched lately. The Lost Daughter put me to sleep, Being the Ricardos was just clumsy. Only saw excerpts from WSS, but its existence seems pointless.

I hope Power of the Dog is good. I want a film I can root for

by Anonymousreply 599January 10, 2022 8:50 AM

I think critics didn't like it cause the humor was too obvious and in your face. It wasn't very subtle, and explained everything so that every average Joe could understand when to laugh.
