Meryl is hilarious as the cigarette smoking, vapid, President who has photos with Mariah Carey and Bill Clinton in the Oval Office. Jennifer Lawrence is a horrible pot smoking woke bitch. Leonardo is a fattie nerd. It’s a train wreck but watching Meryl kept me there.
I was surprised it was as watchable as it was but Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio really helped to ground the film from the ridiculous characterisers by most of the supporting cast how didn't have much to do and what they did they did very broadly.
Towards the end of the film it becomes very moving and has a brilliant final pay-off, even if one can seeing it coming.
Wish Adam McKay would learn to edit his films better. They need to be tighter and more compact. 4/10 - Big thank-you to JLO and Leo who saved the film.

DiCaprio is turning into Oliver Platt, only not as cute.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 24, 2021 1:22 PM |
DiCaprio’s never been super attractive to me, but he’s very plain, almost ugly, in this. And fat.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 24, 2021 1:29 PM |
I found it more amusing than I was expecting. It felt like an evolution of Idiocracy. Like R1, I agree it needed to be better edited.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 24, 2021 3:45 PM |
This is crazy but I find Leonardo DiCaprio impossibly sexy in this and I have never thought that about him even once before now.
But I have strange taste in men.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 24, 2021 5:07 PM |
Meryl is too good for this part, but I loved her Oval Office scene, talking about the regular people loving her smoking.

TimoTay has pretty much a nothing role. I wonder how DiCaprio felt about having to work with him?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 24, 2021 8:04 PM |
R3: I don’t know why we have to pretend he’s still handsome.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 24, 2021 8:05 PM |
I thought this will be a drama with comedy parts, but this was straight up comedy movie.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 24, 2021 10:59 PM |
So they made that 300 million blockbuster movie in like a month? And the Chief of Staff/ president's son says and I quote: "...stuff and shit"on live TV? And why did those Don't look up folks started to get violent at the presidential rally once they saw a comet? They knew there was a comet, the president and the government never said there wasn't one, they were saying they are going to blow up the comet and recover the minerals from the pieces. That was their whole campaign. But those people started shouting: you lied to us. That part was idiotic.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 24, 2021 11:16 PM |
Jennifer Lawrence was actually quite attractive in this movie. And so was Cate Blanchett, minus the fake teeth.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 24, 2021 11:17 PM |
That Steve Jobs type smartphone billionaire guy was the funniest part of the movie.

Truly horrendous. The acting is atrocious. Did the pandemic cause them to forget how to act? Neither the plot nor the script make much sense. The editing is even worse.
This crap fest comes across as a parody of a movie instead of an actual movie. Who the hell ok'd this shit?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 25, 2021 12:06 AM |
R14 I think Netflix green lights every thing they get and never bother reading the scripts.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 25, 2021 12:12 AM |
The only current decent productions on Netflix are some of the documentaries and the film “Power of the Dog.” Most everything else is fluff and filler.

Dicaprio is really looking older
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 25, 2021 1:17 AM |
This is a pretty damn good film, sort of a Network for the modern age, with a little bit of Dr. Strangelove too, taking on the absurdity of climate change deniers, the inertia of climate change believers, Trumpism, social media, right wing news, mainstream news, etc. Great satire and a great comedy for adults.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 25, 2021 1:26 AM |
Loved the Jonah Hill character (loved to hate him). A play on daddy and daughter shitshow of last administration.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 25, 2021 1:31 AM |
Do some people upthread not understand the deadpan satire tone of this movie? It's filled with great and enjoyable performances but my god, very grim outlook.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 25, 2021 4:05 AM |
It was a decent satire. Better than I expected. Kind of “Dr. Strangelove-ultralite.”
OP how is Lawrence’s character “woke?” She actually seems the antithesis of woke. Did you actually watch the movie or just the trailer and quickly scramble to post some half-baked thread?

by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 25, 2021 4:31 AM |
Did you not listen to the lyrics. That was not a "cute" performance at the stadium, it was lacerating, and she sent up divas like herself in the mix. You say you get satire but it seems to have flown over your perception level.

I went in with low expectations due to the mixed reviews, but this was excellent. McKay summed up exactly what I've been feeling for years about our inept, corrupt government and mindless culture. The leads were all good, especially DiCaprio, Hill, and Streep. I wasn't sure what Timothée's role was supposed to be, and I couldn't understand what he was saying most of the time, but overall this was another excellent Adam McKay movie.

Ariana Grande and Timothee Chalamet steal the movie. They are incredibly charismatic and you can't take your eyes off them when they are onscreen.

Bitches, I liked it. For once I looked at Lawrence and did not see the actress but the character she played. Streep with her golden falling lockets and her greed and vapidity and political pandering was amusing and oh that ending.
Agree about Timothee. Was he channeling Brando mumbling? It did not work.
Listen to the lyrics in Ariana's song. Bitter and vulgar. I could see a generation going to a concert as the world is annihilated.

It's so close, I can feel the heat big time
And you can act like everything is alright
But this is probably happening in real time
Celebrate or cry or pray, whatever it takes
To get you through the mess we made
'Cause tomorrow may never come
Just look up
Turn off that shit Fox News

by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 25, 2021 6:45 PM |
Ok far from perfect and with flaws. Still, I don’t think it’s that bad as the critics made it out to be. I liked the idea of the comet being a metaphor for climate change and the message is sent in such a powerful, effective way. The ending in particular is really emotional and satisfying. I loved the mid credits scene with Meryl being eaten by the creature on the alien planet. A couple of funny lines and moments but not laugh out loud funny.
The acting was atrocious, however. You can tell they all did this for the money. Everybody was phoning it in and so over the top. TimoTay did his usual mumbling mess and Harvey’s girl was cringeworthy.

So not funny...obvious "satire"...oh, the news is all about nothing, the president is dumb, the earth is being destroyed and no one cares. One funny scene: the revolting Jonah Hill sitting alone at the end, thinking "she'll be back." The ONLY thing in this overlong, sophomoric, and obvious movie. Want real satire? Try "wag the Dog" or "Dr Strangelove" or Oscar Wilde.

Not quite a Dr. Strangelove For Our Times, but I laughed out loud several times. Even Jonah Hill doing his Jonah Hill schtick was funny. DiCaprio oddly reminded me of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and I couldn't help thinking how much he would have killed in this role. M was okay; nothing to write home about. And Mark Rylance stole the film. 7/10.

I admired Dicaprio's lack of vanity to have a dumpy fat wife and adult children. Other A List male stars would not have done that. Cruise and Pitt, who are both more than a decade older than Dicaprio, have still never played fathers of adult children and all their love interests have been hot young women.

I’d give Mark Rylance an Oscar for this. He made the film for me.
Otherwise it was an entertaining and funny mess that felt jacked up on steroids. Lots of things seemed to be sloppily done, including the sound in parts (at first I thought my tv was broken), and it should have been cut by 45 minutes. I hate the Trump children as much as the next person but I would have removed that character.
It’s clear that it’s satirical or farcical, but I think some people are reacting poorly because it’s nihilistic and makes 99.9% of the population seem like wastes of space (hey, maybe we are). And I think McKay accidentally got caught up and distracted in the popcorn flick vibe and lost his grip somewhat on the satire.
But I’m glad to see something interesting and different.

R112 Despite his dating pattern irl, Leo’s love interests onscreen have always been age appropriate with the possible exception of Margot Robbie, who was 22 during the filming of The Wolf of Wall Street. Although many people are convinced she was lying about her age at the time.

The least funny "comedy" I've seen in a long time. The writing was hamfisted, the message was obvious, and it was just dull and uninteresting. People who are comparing it to Dr Strangelove, which is one of the best movies of all time, are clueless.

The plot change at the hour mark when the President changes course and decides not to blow up the comet makes no sense. The President is shown as having a 99% approval rating at the time with everyone united behind the original plan to obliterate the comet. And that plan was apparently an imminent success. To stop the mission because a billionaire donor (Mark Rylance) wanted to mine the comet's rare minerals for monetary gain would be just stupid. But perhpas the point is that everyone in charge is so fucking stupid and selfish.

I watched this with family, whose reaction was that it was a funny parody of the Trump administration, not picking up on the points McKay was trying to make about the environment. I think that will be true for a lot of people. I wonder if the satire would have hit harder if the politicians in the movie had been well-meaning and intelligent but still captured by donors and distracted by political calculus.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | December 26, 2021 10:27 AM |
I can see no reason why it needed to be only one or the other r141. One of the things I enjoyed about the movie is that it embraced its identity as a parody of Trump and a commentary on the inability of the US to deal with the obvious climate disaster facing us.
Ambiguity, both political and cultural seemed an overriding theme to me.

But as long as the radical left are in charge of Hollywood all we'll get is gloom & doom. They're very pessimistic people. Their glass is always half-empty. How did they take over within the past decade?

by Anonymous | reply 145 | December 26, 2021 11:53 AM |
I get that it was supposed to be about climate change deniers (and seems to be Leo’s intent when talking about it), but it was very topical in the age of COVID and science denial in general. It may be a true comedy, but it wasn’t all that funny to me, maybe too soon.
The one an only Chris Evans had a great cameo though, so there was that.

And satire is supposed to illuminate what we often don’t see for ourselves. Unless you have been living under a rock since 2015, this wasn’t satire, this was sad social commentary. Even MAGAs are self-aware about what they do and why they do it.

I think it’s going to be regarded as classic satire- especially since it’s message is happening. Not a comet, but a burning world. All the Nero’s are fiddling and the masses following the Kardasians on social media and shuffling the music channeling through their buds. Lemmings.

J Law pretty much keeps this film from completely collapsing. DiCaprio is absolute trash until the moment where he finally breaks down and screams at everyone. He summed up how much we all hate anti science Republicans and morons. Otherwise, he’s embarrassingly bad. Wtf is Meryl doing in this? Formerly fat actor as her son is so terrible it’s nearly career ending. Some of the writing is oookay. This could have been so much sharper and they could have had the courage to go SO MUCH HARDER. Way too long, and lazily edited.
No one is getting nominated for this pile of shit.

Asking seriously, R153, what were you hoping to see?
Agree the movie doesn't land, but am torn as to why. Did McKay intend this satire to border on inanity, did he dumb down the material in hopes of reaching the masses, or, did it all get away from him.
All that said, the skewering of the media was unfunny because it hit to close to home. Is it satire when it feels like a documentary?
by Anonymous | reply 155 | December 26, 2021 1:48 PM |
Satire works better when it’s less on the nose. McKay’s Talladega Nights, for example, uses NASCAR as an entry point to satirizing Bush-era America, and it’s hilarious.
In Don’t Look Up, when the hoards of comet deniers don red caps that say “don’t look up” instead of MAGA, you groan because it’s too obvious.

This is also what I’m wondering. But I’m leaning toward the third option because so many of the technical aspects of the film felt rushed or like there were corners cut. It was like he was trying to make it super quickly or cheaply, which is odd for a Netflix release filled with superstars—you’d think he’d have as much time and money as he wants.

The only ones who might be bothered by that are Deplorables themselves who don't like to be made fun of. Liberals just laugh at Deplorables being made fun of in such an obvious manner.
There's an end credit scene where Jonah Hill's character survives, and he has nothing better to do than film himself claiming to be the last man on earth and ask the viewers to like and hit the subscribe button.

I think its meant to be a wake up call, even though its through humor. You're the very person they are skewering in this film. You want to watch uplifting feel good movies while the world explodes outside your door. God forbid you should have your entertainment ruined with a serious thought. I really hate how "entertainment" has muscled out art in the film industry.
I laughed through most of this film. I really enjoyed it, and found the final dinner quite touching. But then, I adored Melancholia. I'm inclined to think some of the more obvious jokes, like the Dont Look Up hats standing in for MAGA, kind of had to be obvious because, as one poster here put it, they had to dumb some of the material down so the audience would see themselves. It showed those rallies in a context that really highlighted how absolutely fucking ridiculous it all was.
I actually liked JLaw in this.

Jlaw looks constipated, Blanchett's and Streep's worst performances, DiCaprio underwhelming, Jonah Hill is an execrable actor, Chalamet wore out his 15 minutes a long time ago. Rylance, Lynskey and Ron Perlman were good. The movie is a mess.

R144 has such a selective memory that doctors term it "Alzheimer's" and gently assist them into living situations away from sharp objects, sources of danger, or stimulation that cause neurons to misfire. The funny part is that R144 is so stupid they can't see the fact that those movies he pines for contained social commentary on that era as much as [italic]Don't Look Up[/italic] ; they just had to obscure it sufficient to avoid the censorship of the Hayes Code. Did R144 not see the wizard in [italic]The Wizard of Oz[/italic] as commentary on the failed Republican leadership that caused the country to sink into a depression after the alarm bells went off with the stock market crash of 1929? No, and I certainly wouldn't expect R144 to see the parallel between Trump and The Great and Powerful Oz.

DLU thinks it's pushing many savvy political buttons, when it's only pointing out the obvious and the easy, over and over again
by Anonymous | reply 229 | December 27, 2021 6:11 AM |
An earlier poster hit the nail on the head when they commented that DLU is a farce, a genre that uses over-the-top character portrayals and absurdity in the extreme for plot development, which does not work, IMHO, for the premise of this film, as that approach requires a crude over-simplification of any message. As many here have already stated in some form, the humor is relentlessly ham-fisted and brain dead elementary in a never ending wash, rinse and repeat cycle. The end scene in the dining room is what saves the movie from being a complete failure.
People are also confusing the disdain for this movie as something that people are clearly not getting, when it's exactly the opposite. The message is clear very early on...to the point where you could probably fast forward in 15 minute increments every 10 minutes and not have missed much of anything important.
If DLU was attempting to follow in the footsteps of "Idiocracy" it wasn't dumb enough, and, if it was inspired by "Dr. Strangelove" they should've never stopped worrying that they had a bomb on their hands.

It would be pretty hard not to "get" the movie. It makes the point and then bashes you over the head with it.
Like a bunch of other bait movies this year, it's far too long without a reason to justify the runtime. I really think it's a product of many of these movies going almost direct to streaming. They're too self-indulgent (Nightmare Alley being the most egregious example I've seen of late).

I thought the movie was hilarious. I laughed out loud several times. It's a great send up of our current political environment and social media-obsessed culture. Cate Blanchett and Mark Rylance were almost unrecognizable, but hysterically funny.
And I really loved how Jennifer Lawrence's character, throughout the entire movie, continued to be pissed off about the military guy who made everyone pay for free snacks at the White House.

The film was too long and took too long to get going but when it did it was watchable and funny. Very crude and obvious but no different to the 4 years of a Trump administration. Nowhere near the greatest film I've seen this year but it was enjoyable.
Seemed odd not to reference Deep Impact or Armageddon considering the movie had the same plot.
The performances were all excellent, especially Jennifer Lawrence in the non comedy role. Agree with someone else who said she was better than Gaga in Gucci (I typed that with a wide eyed stare btw) and only disappointed that she didn't correct someone for using she/her pronouns when she clearly uses she/they pronouns. Mark Rylance and Jonah Hill also very good.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | December 27, 2021 2:10 PM |
The Jennifer Lawrence character is a somewhat jaded PhD science student, not someone who has time to follow the social media debate over pronouns. She’d probably tell the TERFs and Twitter fighters alike to get a life.

Jonah Hill usually annoys me, because he plays Jonah Hill in every movie, this one included. But it worked for him in this one. He was excellent as a spoiled, ignorant Donald Trump Jr. type.

The problem is, I'm so exhausted from the MAGA movement and their stupidity and angry mob mentality.

Meryl Streep literally proves in this film that when she has no one to mimic, no voice or personality to copy or "base" her character on, she isn't really a major actress at all. She's sitcom material at best.
Seriously, watch her in this, and in some other things, she's done over recent years where she isn't doing a parody of someone. She simply can't act very well at all. She makes Jonah Hill almost tolerable.

I will say, the reactions reinforce the overall point of the movie. If Don't Look Up is an allegory for climate change, we continue with snark, frivolity, and a bunch of other stupid shit while humanity's doom grows nearer. And even though some people are dismissive because they assume they'll be long gone before the situation is at its worse, they'll be crying loudest and hardest if the worst suddenly happens next week.

What is the #1 selling vehicle in the US?
Ford F-150.
What do we eat?
Fruits and vegetables grown on commercial farms.
What do we release into our drains everyday?
Various household cleaning products and cosmetics.
I'm complicit and not trying to imply otherwise. However, because we collectively accept political inaction and corporate irresponsibility, nothing changes. Don't Look Up made me think of my own behavior because I read the articles about global warming, rising sea levels, and unbreathable air in large Asian cities...while barely changing my environmentally irresponsible habits.

R271, the overvall effects of climate change will be no less catastrophic than a 5 mile comet slamming into the Earth. The thing Don't Look Up should make people consider is the fact that, unlike a comet, humans can actually change their behavior and help prevent a disaster.

This movie really shook me up. When I was a kid I saw On the Beach and still frightens me when I think of it all these years later. It depressed me, too. I could not help rewatching the last third of it four times. I think most Trump/Q people will watch this and it may be the only thing that gets to them about climate change. In my opinion it is Evangelicalism that is the real cause of climate change denial in this country. Christians believe God have them the earth to populate and exploit. They will not believe that they could damage the earth unless it was God's purpose. They believe the earth is due to be swallowed up in flames to prepare for the return of Christ anyway - and they will somehow be spared.

In the movie, humanity could've gotten rid of the meteor in the early stages if the tech guru and his loyal servant, the president, had not intervened. The greed of the ruling class was humanity's downfall. And how was it sold to the public? Lucrative jobs. Jobs that were so important, even the parents of Kate (Jennifer Lawrence) chose the promised jobs over their own daughter. Then came the "Don't Look Up" movement to create uncertainty about the threat the meteor was posing, to the point even the existence of the meteor (that was supposed to give people highly lucrative jobs!) was questioned.
The movie was all about the methods of how the public is being manipulated (by the media, like the insipid morning show) and what buttons are being pushed to keep them stupid and obedient, so the ones in power can endanger the entire planet to become rich and more powerful. The President uses the meteor to get her unqualified nominee through congress and make the people forget all about her sexting scandal with said nominee.
Randall's screaming rant about people not being able to come to any common ground, because some denying the basic facts, like the existence of the threat that is the meteor, was quite poignant. Either idiots fell for the lucrative jobs scam or they fell for the "Don't Look Up" scam, owning the elitists scientists and well-educated snobs trying to scare the public by pushing facts on people.

What's interesting for me is I can separate what I personally think on a tire and judge the performance. So many people on DL just can't. We hate Jonah Hill because he is fat- he can't act! This movie is smashing so hard all over the world in every country, and just had the second biggest streaming debut in history, that I think its Oscar chances have shot up dramatically.
Leo, Jennifer, Meryl, Cate, Melanie and Mark all deserve Oscar nominations. Leo's performance was better than Benedict's in Power of the Dog. Jennifer is far better than Gaga in House of Gucci. Mark Rylance and Kodi gave the two best supporting performances of the year. Seriously, Meryl, Cate and Melanie should all be nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

It cracked me up how they kept saying how HOT Leonardo was - that he became a sex symbol when in fact he looked so gross and awful. But fame makes all straight dudes very fuckable to women I guess and the movie was making a point of that I suppose. IRL that zombie Pete Davidson is getting all kinds of pu*** so it’s not a stretch at all. Kind of a low bar. Meryl was good but she could pull that off in her sleep. JLaw was fine but not sure she really shined here. Melanie is good. I liked her in one of those Duplass Bros things but she was fine here nothing mind-blowing. I could see 3 or 4 as awards nominees not the whole cast.

Someone asked if it's better than Melancholia...
The performances in Melancholia are better, but I found it just as absurd as Don't Look Up. I was actually hoping Kirsten Dunst would show up in a cameo, but no such luck. Overall, Don't Look Up is an easier watch, but not worth repeated viewings. Melancholia is slower, but in a way, more thought provoking (not that I don't appreciate the overall point of Don't Look Up).
Coincidentally, the main characters in both films surround themselves with loved ones and patiently wait to be pulverized.

I enjoyed it but the ending took forever. Did the director edit it as well? It needed less clunky, everything but the kitchen sink (almost literally) ending, maybe cut the so-called suspense by two minutes or so before impatience sets in.
The atmosphere they created around the dinner table was nice. I actually bought into DeCaprio's sort of wake up call and heading home with the JLo character, Chalamet's, and then Teddy showing up.

The acting was superb. Since Titanic, I had forgotten Leo was an actor and this film reminded me of that fact; JLaw, although I can't stand her was also extremely good, and the rest were cool too. Timmy was approached by Adam McKay for the role. Adam has been wanting to work with him and saw this as the perfect opportunity to make that happen. Timmy originally turned it down because there was nothing there. Timmy eventually mentioned something about the film missing some sort of religious aspect, that if the world is ending, they should say a prayer at the dinner table. That was when he took the role, as he would be the one to say the prayer.

Don’t look up is brilliant. It’s the perfect satire of our times with a 5 star cast at the top of its game. Who cares what critics say anymore? They were blown away by Spencer in Venice when the only good thing about it is KStew’s performance (for which a nom will suffice). They pre-hyped In the Heights as if it was the best musical ever made. They timidly supported The Last Duel which is one of the best pic of the year. They overrated The Power of the Dog which is visually stunning but has a weak screenplay. They praised Belfast which is good but far from Oscar worthy. Branagh could have made a great universal film about the uprooting of communities but he only made a nice little cold forgettable movie with a weak screenplay and a pretentious direction. Last year, they were rooting for Boseman over Hopkins’ historical performance. And so on and so forth.
Again, most critics can’t be trusted anymore. Don’t look up is brilliant. Brilliant cast, brilliant screenplay, great direction and editing.

DLU is a lot more entertaining than Network or Dr. Strangelove. Network is a slog to get through, but I was captivated with DLU for the entire movie, and it's a long one.
I think Melanie Lynsky will get a surprise Oscar nomination. She's the Beatrice Strait of the cast.

I totally agree with R335. I'm not much interested in the debate on this one. I loved this film. Have watched it twice already.
Though I also agree that Meryl Streep brought nothing to her role. She's just a series of faces and movement. Someone will now defend that as her brilliant take on DJT. But no, she just succeed at her gameplan. And Streep always has a gameplan. She couldn't ruin the film, because she was given no scenes without the much better inhabited and inspired performances of Rylance and Jonah Hill.
R320 has some great casting choices. Kudrow or Laura Dern or even Bette Midler would have done something much more inventive with President Orlean. How in the hell did they Make Streep look thin and 60?
I always loved JLaw. Just didn't always love the hype show around her. Nice to see her back just being a great actress. She's compelling without ever being flashy. Totally believable and badass and touching. The hatred against her here is amusing and speaks to the age of most DL posters.
Blanchette succeeded at what Merly attempts. She was every bit of business and it was high showing off just how great she is, and yet we know the Brie is a real person. We've seen her or met her. Cate didn't make her lovable or a villain. She is what she is. Shallow as fuck and about as smart as the average person. But better looking.

Meryl Streep ain't showing her REAL ass for a long shot at a Best Supporting Actress nom. She's kept her wrinkles but that's not her real face. She's been lifted - upper, lower and neck. Nice job too. That insane wig hides the scars. The wig was an inspired choice. Of course a female Trump would have long blonde wavy hair that she was decades too old for and dress in pinstripe suits slutty enough for Streisand to wear during the Clinton years.

I think that was CGI. They may have done the same thing to Cate because she didn't look real to me. I honestly didn't recognize Cate and thought it was another actress. They have been doing a lot of CGI in film. If they can CGI a young Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in The Mandelarian, they can lift and cut a few pounds off of Meryl.

Cate had the newscaster spackle special- loads of bronzer, probably more makeup on her that we've ever seen. It's also possible that they put lifts on her too. The fake teeth would help plump out her nasiolabial lines, like what they did for Matt Damon for, "Behind the Candleabra"- they're actually called, "Dental Plumpers".

I feel like there's some symbolism there at the very end. It's like all the survivors arrive on a new Eden, naked no less, ready to partake in its fruit, but instead of being young, innocent, and beautiful, they're all greedy, old, and fat.
Like they're already spoiled or something.

Agree with the Streep criticisms.
I think she let her disgust for Trump ( and the Mariana Trench couldn’t contain all that he deserves and earned when it come to disgust) get in the way of a better performance.
While watching her I remembered her feud with him for his ridiculing a disabled person and then him tweeting she is “overrated”.
I honestly think she was taking so much glee in skewering him with her character that she let it obscure, even prevent, a better performance.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | December 29, 2021 3:56 PM |
I thought the message was powerful and on target, the the execution as a film was really messy: too many "moments" that didn't cohere. Perhaps better editing could have solved it, but I think this was a un-direct-able" cast (apart from Leo, but even his "ticks" were too much).

But that wouldn't be the message the movie wanted to send.

I loved the Bon Iver song too. Haven't sought out a song from a movie so fast since Pretty Little Lies, "Cold Heart." The score in the last 30 minutes of the film is such an integral part to how moving the film becomes for 25 minutes. It is meant to be bearable - because the world ends just like that. What would you really do? The making dinner scene was so low key and normal and feels like an improvised night with family and friends with a bit more wine than usual. Leo's line about we really did kind of have it all was improvised, according to the director. Then they shot it a few more times. It's very understated at the table - for the audience it is profound. McKay refuses to be sentimental for long or much - so he relies on his actors to bring on the soulfulness and ugly humanity. The Chalamet prayer was JUST right. The idiot upthread who said this would never happen in real life - wasn't watching the movie. Dr. Mindy just suggested they say Amen. His wife deflected and said you know I don't know anything about religion. They weren't embracing faith as much as they were trying to find words to make their last moments of life meaningful and conversational. Chalamet didn't do a dumb Keanu Reeves impersonation - he channelled the experience of his youth and what we already learned about him in earlier exchange with Jennifer Lawrence. That he was raised evangelical but found his own way to believe. He mumbled to her that he was embarrassed. So though they did indeed "pray" - He never once used the word god or jesus in his prayer. It was beautifully written and delivered by his character with focus. Not above his grade - but from deep inside. It's a great and needed moment, so then they continue on to talk about store bought apple pie and grinding your own beans.....just like people might do as the world ends. Everyone in THAT room carried the extra burden and peace of knowing it really was about to happen. Yes, Rob Morgan was gay. It wasn't important to the story, but we see and know. It's a masterful scene. They are not all family. They are familiar.

The only joke that almost worked was the minor one with the payoff in the finale mid-credits scene (not the post-credits scene, which was stupid and pointless).

But Della, what makes you think that Blanchett was parodying FOX news blondes? I'd say she was more Mika and Kelly Ripa than anyone on Fox. This is not a partisan movie. It's a fucking wake up and shake up to anyone who can receive the message. Nothing about Blanchett's character was evil or conniving. She was vapid and well groomed. Someone we see everyday on TV anyday from the local weather girl to co host on GMA. I didn't view Tyler Perry or Brie as being at all political. If anything they are most likely Democrats. As radical as Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper.
Don't Look Up is not just a shot at Trump and Republicans. DL is full or dull old farts in mental ruts. Including Della with her weird Angelina Jolie obsession. I've never heard of Dr. Strangelove? Why should I.
This movie is about something else. Everyone should see themselves in it. And be a bit shook.

I'm watching it now. It feels like it's never going to end.
I can be forgiving of imperfect projects, but this one isn't good. It's very weird; it feels suited to its release alongside Being the Ricardos. AAA-plus stars are slumming it in poorly written and directed projects.
At least this one has a good moral, I guess, but it feels like a didactic, artless and uninspired take on 'Melancholia,' with deeply felt psychology being swapped out for witless sarcasm and uncreative direction. And there's no good reason for it to be so long and self-indulgent. I zoned out during Jennifer Lawrence's tryst wirh Timothée, and I am writing this during an Ariana Grande mini-concert that did not need to take up screen time.
Network is a brilliant satire. It feels urgent, like it's heading toward a catastrophe throughout and it gets laughs out of the mounting pressure. Thank You For Smoking is over the top and alarming, another effective satire. This movie has too many characters with too many B-storylines meandering all over the place for it to feel urgent, and I don't find the writing funny at all. Lawrence complaining about paying for free snacks while a deadly comet approaches? Har har...in a middle-school writing assignment, maybe.
A for drawing attention to ignorance and governmental neglect if existential crises, but D for execution if it is supposed to wake us up or to be funny. It seems like it is reaching for both but doesn't accomplish either.
To be scary, it would have to bear some semblance to reality. News hosts would NEVER forgo an approaching doomsday scenario for a pop star interview. Are you kidding? If it bleeds, it leads, and newscasters make "storms" out of partly cloudy days and try to convince us every night that murderers and rapists abound outside our houses. If Don Lemon were in the movie collecting obsessive, terrified cult members and obsessing over minute-by-minute "breaking news" about the comet with details that never changed, that would be a lot closer to reality, funnier and scarier.

All of you commenting on Leo's' paunchy body and lack of sex appeal - had you ever considered that perhaps Leo packed on a few pounds purposely for this role? He's playing a schlubby scientist who's riddled with anxieties and loaded up on meds, according to the wife. The 'sexy scientist' promotion is because he still has an attractive face that works against type.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | December 31, 2021 5:18 AM |
R456 This is from 2014. It's not for the movie. DiCaprio has modeled himself on Brando—haartthrob 20-something who fucks anything that moves who grew into a big smooshy hairy lump who wants to save the world.

by Anonymous | reply 458 | December 31, 2021 5:27 AM |
The closest he ever got to 'fitness model' was in The Beach, and that wasn't close.
If we have to classify body types, he made a seamless transition from twink to bear with no gym bunny or wolf phase in between.

Can he act? Was he believable and inventive as Dr. Mindy? Does no one understand that he wasn't meant to be "sexy" but he was in contrast to the "insane bitch" that Lawrence was labelled as. So because Dr. Mindy was nerdy and steady with the information and had a full head of greasy hair - the media labelled him as "sexy". Get it. Then it became virtually true. Like many men he was bestowed an moniker that he didn't in anyway live up to. In bed with Blanchette - he's wearing a t shirt of course. And he needs a lot of meds to function.
I've read DL poster call Dr. Fauci SEXY. Same phenom. You need his reassurance. Ha.
Leo Dicaprio never appealed to me. Snub nosed white boy with no great features. He's older and thick and hedonistic or he gained a few pounds for the role? Who cares. Leo has proven to be a very adventurous actor and also very a very good one. He never wanted to be boxed in as a leading man glamor dude. But he can play one.
I found him most appealing in Don't Look Up. His warmth and passion and ordinary guy attractiveness.

by Anonymous | reply 464 | December 31, 2021 5:41 AM |
His personal life is not what he's playing onscreen, R464. Who cares? Leo is an actor being judged like an actress. By YOU. His loss of youth has nothing to do with his talent or the interesting challenges he fully invested himself in, as an ACTOR. Appreciate him for that. Leo is fucking admirable and surprising in his choices. He never marketed himself as a himbo. Never.
Try doing this with a worthy actress too. Appreciate their WORK.

R464 A lot of those “relationships” were PR. Like Blake Lively was absolutely a PR relationship, and she dumped Leo for Ryan Reynolds.
Comment from Awardswatch about Leo’s dating life:
“Leo will only publicly date white girls in their early 20s, but in private his tastes are broader than that. Like he was 100% hooking up with Rihanna, she was already 27 when that fling started and it lasted for a couple of years after that.“

I still enjoy the look of amused disdain that DiCaprio gave to Gaga when she swanned past him at the Golden Globes. He knows a fraud. Leo Dicaprio never puts on a show at public events. He doesn't smear on Movie Star charm like George Clooney or pose all night like Brad Pitt. You can tell he hates most of it. I think he's a pretty fine and serious actor. He's not always been right or great or believable in his roles - but he continues to push himself and to take chances. He has a diverse and pretty fine film resume. He's extremely good in Don't Look Up.

As I watched, I thought that that was probably just my imagination speculating overtime because Melancholia is one of my favorite movies...then the ending was delivered in super slow-mo with the characters all sitting in a ring and holding hands and I realized that my theory is probably right.
It feels like a person with a big holier-than-though attitude and limited creative spark decided to make a "better" version of Melancholia and embarrassed themself in trying to do so.

R509 True! February 2020 as COVID was spreading the news media distracted us with the Super Bowl, the Oscars and J-Lo's Oscar snub, Kobe Bryant's death and memorial with 20K in attendance, the Iowa caucus, Trump's impeachment and in the Democratic debates where Pocahontas focused on Bloomberg's NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) more than anything else.

They aren't really "news" they are "hosts". Just like in real life! Its about all media not only "news media". Sooooooooo GLOSSY and upbeat, high vibration. Cate was the best performance in the movie, her character was very on the nose and deplorable. Leo was good too. It comes together when he has the breakdown and is himself screaming on air, like his grad student Llaw did at the start of the movie. Tyler's look at Leo's fear and anger and loss of "media cool" was devastating.

by Anonymous | reply 512 | January 1, 2022 5:16 AM |
The last scene is purposefully awkward, I hope. Did y'all miss that it was thousands of years later? They're naked for our enjoyment - because they are wealthy, greedy, venal, privileged & cruel - with old white bodies. The scene doesn't quite work, but it's still fun. The algorithm didn't guide them to the totally right place. They are dumb and dumbfounded. Meryl reaches out fast to something pretty and it snaps her dumb head off. A few thousand years frozen. It's a crude joke, but enjoyable. A bit of cheap reprimand after that brilliant last dinner scene.
The dinner scene alone makes this a great film.

RE: Oscar chances.
Bette Midler loved it. She's a voting member of AMPAS.
The movie has a good chance in screenplay. And being "topical" and "industry-friendly" will help it. It could show up in editing as well. It probably needs support from other branches to get into Picture.
DiCaprio could slide into a nomination. I wouldn't bet on it. But, it's possible. Only four of the slots there feel like locks to me.
One of the film's misfires is not having a slam-dunk male supporting role, for which the category is super weak this year. Belfast and The Power of the Dog each have a pair of actors ahead of most everyone else, but none of those performances are super strong. Jonah Hill was good (and I hate saying that), but he hasn't shown up in any of the precursors.
Perhaps Streep can hoodwink the Academy into throwing her another bone, like she has so many times in the past. But, she failed to deliver a performance that set her apart from the ensemble (and I'd argue DiCaprio, Hill, and even Lawrence all made more effective/sensible choices than her, considering the material). Her category isn't as strong as Actress, but it's telling that the Globes took a pass on her (they've nominated her 32 times across mediums and the only time she got into the Oscar race without the Globes was Ironweed back in 1987).

Wil Wheaton loved it. Here's his review:
"I'm usually pretty late to the party on good art, whether it's movies or a series or an album. I always feel like I'm the last person in the world to discover something.
But this time, I think we're close enough to the beginning of the party to recommend something that I suspect some large number of you haven't seen.
Anne and I watched Don't Look Up a few nights ago, and we loved it. It's an uncomfortably dark and relevant satire that was created entirely before the pandemic. (Quick edit to add: I mean the primary writing and development process. It was filmed, edited, etc., during the pandemic.)
I mention that oddly-specific bit of information because when you watch it, you will see lots of places where it feels like the entire movie is about Covid.
But it isn't. I mean, it is, and it's about climate change and it's about vapid cable news talkers who do not deserve the trust they abuse and exploit. It's about delusional, stupid people being manipulated and exploited by selfish, evil people.
So it's, you know, really about America since about 2016, and it was so incisive then, it managed to satirize something that hadn't even happened when it was made.
Parts of is are SO UNCOMFORTABLE and other parts are so funny, but ultimately when it was over Anne and I just looked at each other and went, "Ffffffuuuuuuuccccckkkk" because it just feels a little too relevant. The performances are magnificent. And I didn't know until this morning that a lot of the actors were in wigs, which I guess is a thing now? Or maybe it's always been and I'm just noticing it now? Anyway, they are all fantastic. Jonah Hill just kills it.
It won't be for everyone, but if it lands on you, I suspect it will *really* land on you."

He was superb. He did all the work for me of absorbing the story just through his eyes and face, no dialog from him, when he was eavesdropping on court gossip, forcing it out of somebody. or receiving it from someone.
Again, it's all subjective experience, but I don't know how anybody could view his performance in "Wolf Hall" and not see him being Cromwell.

[quote] It would be a joke if DLU received Best 'Original' Screenplay as it has been compared to Deep Impact, Melancholia and Armageddon.
That's like saying Dr Strangelove's screenplay was "unoriginal" because it was compared to On the Beach.

R538 That's funny. I can see Mark Rylance being nominated for the Oscars, for the best supporting actor and even winning it.

r449, You lost me at I never heard of Dr. Strangelove.

The satire in this film doesn't work at all in its treatment of Covid. In reality, there were Republicans who didn't take Covid seriously and Democrats who cared only about the appearance of doing something. That's what I thought they were going for initially until the stupid Don't Look Up rallies. In the real world, Republicans think Democrats are the ones who are anti science because they prioritize the vaccine with it's waning efficacy overall treatments and who idolize a man who was previously responsible for pulling life saving drugs off the market during the peak of the AIDS pandemic. Not very nuanced messaging in this movie. A total fail.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | January 2, 2022 3:55 PM |
Also ironic that they chose not to mine the comet instead of nuke it. You have Republicans think that denying alternative treatments in favor of a vaccine only approach is prolonging the pandemic in order to make Pfizer rich. So of course those who are being made fun of in this movie are going to assume that the left should be the target of the satire. This movie will change no one's mind.

Jeff Bezos's girlfriend is the real-life version of Cate Blanchett's character in DLU.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | January 2, 2022 7:01 PM |
R542 Dr Strangelove is based on the novel Red Alert which is very different in tone and the characters in the film are not from the novel nonetheless it was nominated for Best Writing based on material from another medium. DLU is redolent of so many other films. It's unfocused and misses the target. It has a 50 Metascore and 55% on Rotten Tomatoes
by Anonymous | reply 550 | January 2, 2022 7:28 PM |
Streep was terrible in this movie. In fact, pretty much the entire cast was awful....hammy and over indicating 'See?!!! Look???!!! I'm doing SATIRE!!!!!'
DiCaprio was ok-ish....though he was underplaying it so much it became overkill so almost as bad as all the hams overdoing it (Streep, Rylance, the truly awful Jonah Hill).
Which brings me to : "How the fuck did Jonah the Whale become a famous film star?"
He's a terrible actor and creepily unattractive both in physicality and manner. He always comes across as an over entitled douche canoe in every thing he does including real life.

It's ironic that the creators of Don't Look Up are also caricatures in the crisis. Obama got the globe to sign a climate change agreement. Trump abandoned it. Don't look at that difference. Biden's pushing climate change legislation that the GOP opposes. Don't look at that either.
The Paris Climate Accord is in no way perfect, but it was still a big deal. And Build Back Better would also make a big difference. Both are more meaningful than a star-studded film. Yet the climate warriors behind that film are actively discouraging advocating for such action.
"Don't Look Up" satirized politicians' response to climate change, as well as the press's. Maybe it would have been a more successful satire if it had included political hipsters. Those who believe posturing in favor of a good cause is more valiant than actually fighting for it.
"Paris Climate & Build Back Better aren't enough." No, they're not. But if you cared about climate, you would acknowledge these measures exist & then propose improvements. You wouldn't say those who are fighting an imperfect fight & those who suppress the fight are the same.

I just watched it a few days ago. After i realized it was satire, i enjoyed it. Who does Mark Rylance channeling as his character as the billionaire? He was great.

R558 Daily Mail has caught on to what exactly? Where are they calling him gay? Or is every single guy that has a male friend automatically gay to you?
by Anonymous | reply 560 | January 5, 2022 9:24 PM |
R560, you sound aggrieved at someone suggesting Leo might be gay? You do realise what the DL is, right?
by Anonymous | reply 561 | January 5, 2022 9:28 PM |
Just because Leo likes to hang out with his lifelong bruh and best friend doesn't automatically mean he's chosen a homosexual lifestyle. He is not effeminate or even very well groomed. More points against his being gay. He's very talented. Maybe the best of the last 25 years. Depp and Cruise and Christian Bale get the accolades. Leo is first and foremost an actor. With a great resume. He has a natural speaking voice and no exaggerated facial expressions or lisp in real life. He has not chosen to be gay IMO. When Leo does clean up he wears classic conservative attire of other classy men like Cary Grant or George Clooney. Black tux and shiny shoes. Slicked back hair. There is nothing colloquial or trendy about Leo DiCaprio. He has that earnest and mild bad boy straight kinda charm. He doesn't seem to have been practicing in the mirror his whole life like so many homosexuals. DiCaprio has the reputation of playboy but appears to be a serial monogamist. Non verbal and no funny faces. Most gay men couldn't even pretend to be like him.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | January 6, 2022 2:43 AM |

R564 is always stocking posters on the datalounge. He follows things we say and comes later to betray himself and accuse others of the most dumb things. This poster is to pitied. In my home language we say - why argue with a dead man?
R564 has many accounts here - but says nothing of value. He posts all HATE and all racist thoughts. OLD queer ideas. Lots of strange fixations. We must report him, again.
R562 is bold. Make good points. Funny. Gay men don't lisp anymore though. Maybe R564 does! He loves John Mulaney. A lady.

I saw Brie/Cate more as a Kelly Ripa (along with Tyler’s Michael Strajan), a talk show host, not a political commentator or Fox News nimbo - the latter don’t bring pop stars to their TV shows. So bringing up left ir right to their performance is irrelevant. Kathy Lee leans right, Kelly leans left, yet neither brings politics into their job, which is getting people who are at home at 10:00 am to watch them.
They’re just shallow fluff tv programming.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | January 6, 2022 8:41 AM |
R570 But didn't their show seem political? I can't imagine Kelly Ripa bringing an astrophysicist onto her show once much less to make him a regular. The woman is friends with Andy Cohen, for God's sake. Daytime talk shows on broadcast networks don't seem to go above third-grade education and interest levels.

Adam McKay is really winning right now with Succession and Don't Look Up.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | January 6, 2022 2:26 PM |
It's the big team of A-list stars plus the end-of-days scenario that have attracted the masses. Both of those are proven ways to draw people's attention.
Unfortunately, it's still not a good movie. The concept is fine, but the implementation is incredibly clunky. If it wins awards, they will be awarded by industry insiders for aggressive campaigning and for ratings/revenue with the unspoken understanding that the movie doesn't really deserve awards for quality.
The reviews are already logged and they speak for themselves.
Fifty percent at Metacritic and 54 percent at Rotten Tomatoes. Sixty percent and under was a failing grade in my school system.

R574 R575 and Spider Man topped $1 billion over the Christmas weekend! Does that mean it's good or that it will be Oscar-nominated? DLU was free with a Netflix subscription, and you didn't have to go to a theater to see it.

Just watched it. A bit long in the mddle. Meryl was hilarious. Liked DiCaprio and Lawrence. Overall, 8.5 to 8 out of 10. The hate seems more fashion than substance.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | January 9, 2022 6:55 PM |
R577 the film has no substance which probably explains the 49 Metascore and the 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Those are failing grades and the lowest scores of any film that is considered a potential Oscar nominee in any category!
by Anonymous | reply 578 | January 10, 2022 2:29 AM |
It was a comedy, not a documentary. I found it amusing on a Sunday afternoon. 78% from viewers on RT.
by Anonymous | reply 579 | January 10, 2022 2:32 AM |
It's a black comedy at that. The critics dislike it because it exposes the vapid emptiness of media as much as anything else. The movie is not a masterpiece but it is funny and has a virtuoso end scene. I'm not convinced the credit coda did it any favors. Most people I know liked it for what it was and everyone saw a glimpse of themself in it. Our useless obsession with celebrities and sharing our opinions while the world burns and fascists rise.
by Anonymous | reply 580 | January 10, 2022 2:41 AM |
It was fun to watch at home. When it got dull, I did the dishes. I would have walked out if I paid money to see it in a theatre. Some of the satire hit the mark and the actors were pretty good. Jonah Hill was the MVP as the douchebag.: The problem was the script. Not grounded enough to really work as a satire.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | January 10, 2022 2:48 AM |

I liked the beginning of the movie, then it dragged a bit, but overall not the worst I’ve seen.
One part that had me laughing was when Leo went on Sesame Street the second time and the puppet asked him, “We’re all going to be okay, right?” And Leo responds “Every man, woman, and child on Earth is going to die!”

'The film's never been more timely'- Entertainment Weekly 2011
'Remains as relevant as ever decades after its release'-The Hollywood Reporter 2016

The more I think about it, the less I like it. I enjoyed the performances, the editing was a mess and the screenplay is as self-congratulatory as all get out, but not very smart.
I was hoping for a good dark comedy, but this one is all over the place and doesn't really hit its targets. I think there are ton of issues with big tech having too much power, but as a group, they are pro-science, know how to calculate odds and see green technology as an opportunity. Meanwhile, the film manages to completely ignore the actual baddies--big oil. And because both Sirota and McKay are sulky Bernie Bros, they don't have the guts to pick a political side--and pretty much use the Meryl Streep character to conflate Trump and Hillary Clinton.
It's a cop-out.
by Anonymous | reply 597 | January 10, 2022 7:50 AM |
The movie’s biggest flaw - ramblingly long - can easily be corrected in these modern streaming times. That’s why it’s still very popular with Netflix viewers. I simply fast forwarded all of Ariana Grande’s performance and Leo’s long-assed meltdown. I respect both of them and their talents but those moments were simply not needed.
by Anonymous | reply 598 | January 10, 2022 7:52 AM |
I watched it because I wanted to enjoy a well-made movie with star power. It did have star power, but it just wasn't that good, but that's been true of every Oscar bait movie I've watched lately. The Lost Daughter put me to sleep, Being the Ricardos was just clumsy. Only saw excerpts from WSS, but its existence seems pointless.
I hope Power of the Dog is good. I want a film I can root for
by Anonymous | reply 599 | January 10, 2022 8:50 AM |
I think critics didn't like it cause the humor was too obvious and in your face. It wasn't very subtle, and explained everything so that every average Joe could understand when to laugh.
