Tasteful Friends: Antiques Roadshow's gay appraiser's NYC apartment/hoard

This apartment would be gorgeous without all the crap he's piled into it.

Watched it, very interesting. Likeable quirky guy who enjoys his stuff.

by Anonymousreply 1December 24, 2021 5:28 AM

Each to his own. Love the apartment, love 20% of the hoard, but a lot is just pedestrian kitsch. Would have expected something different from this guy, but I guess an appraiser doesn't have to be a connoisseur, or have taste.

by Anonymousreply 2December 24, 2021 5:52 AM

He is one of the "huckster" types who ruin AR, like that bozo John Sollo who did appraisals for Rago.

I've always liked him but I'm also a bit surprised on how messy this apartment is...the maximalism isn't surprising but he does have a lot of crap.

Also annoyed that this dumb video didn't show us the kitchen.

by Anonymousreply 4December 24, 2021 7:18 AM

Yeah, no. I want all this shit picked up and put away now.

Seriously, though. That clip is too long and that apartment needs a 60 cubic yard dumpster for about three days of decluttering.

He is a nice fellow, though, and attractive.

by Anonymousreply 5December 24, 2021 7:30 AM

He's likable, and I like the space he has, but for someone who knows old things and their value it's a huge waste to cram a beautiful space with gleanings of having pillaged every "$5 table" at third-rate antique malls in desperate places. There are many hundreds of things of the same small size that could be fit into a lunchbox, almost none of them worth more than 5 or 10 bucks. It's pure tacky shit, not tacky enough to be absurd or funny, not curious or valuable enough to be of any interest, just a bunch of old tat no better than a collection of Avon bottle vintage cars. Terrible shit.

Likewise he has too many small tables and stands and ratty little bits of furniture that are not worth $100 each.

FFS, in an apartment with ceilings of 27 feet, use some scale. Don't fill it with things that with fit inside a lunchbox, have a giant sofa, a focal point or two to distract from the pure dreck he has everywhere around him. Yes, a few things are worth done money, and I reckon his posters are a different story, certainly a few that I see have value -- and interest. It's not Sherlock Holmes' drawing room, nor the Old Curiosity Shop, nor Miss Havisham's table laid with an ancient feast gone rotten --any if which might have been interesting-- it's just odd bits of kitsch that should never have been rescued from the dust bin in 99.9% of what's on view.

I love this guy on Antiques Roadshow, thanks for posting.

by Anonymousreply 7December 24, 2021 11:36 AM

There was so much clutter it gave me anxiety.

by Anonymousreply 8December 24, 2021 11:46 AM

My horror at first glance was somewhat eased at his thorough explanation behind each of the "tableaus". He is an incredibly likeable, personable guy and the apartment is right for him.

The interviewer sounded rather judgemental.

by Anonymousreply 9December 24, 2021 11:58 AM

Well, how nice to follow along listen to an adult explain his surroundings with an understanding that he's something of a hoarder.

His taste is wildly eccentric, but all of it seems to satisfy a design concept that starts in his head and is well-executed.

It's definitely not for me and I'm glad I'm not the guy who has to clean out the space in the future.

I love the idea of having something so specific and unusual - his Czech posters in the hall - those are probably what I'd find most interesting if I visited, which is never going to happen.

Thanks OP, not a bad way to pass some time in the morning.

what a load of old shit

I adore his place and as someone said I wish they had shown the kitchen . I would not enjoy having all the bric a brac he has in there because all that stuff has to constantly be dusted.

by Anonymousreply 12December 24, 2021 12:53 PM

I was sort of horrified at all the junk!

by Anonymousreply 13December 24, 2021 1:33 PM

That place would trigger my claustrophobia. He’s extremely likable and self-aware enough to know his aesthetic will not appeal to most. I really respect, however, his commitment to his vision, and I like his mix of low and high brow. Love the fussy old queens on here whose major criticism is that there are pedestrian objects included rather than only antique items of value. If his shit makes him happy, good for him.

by Anonymousreply 14December 24, 2021 1:54 PM

Great !

by Anonymousreply 15December 24, 2021 2:55 PM

[quote]have a giant sofa

Without a shit emoji pillow on it, as he does.

by Anonymousreply 16December 24, 2021 2:55 PM

I would love to have a few of the items. He has way to much stuff and needs a designer to place them artfully. Fabulous room though !!!

by Anonymousreply 17December 24, 2021 5:07 PM

Looks like a dusty junk shop.

by Anonymousreply 18December 24, 2021 6:13 PM

Even Frasier Crane would be rolling his eyes at this

by Anonymousreply 19December 24, 2021 6:20 PM

I would eat up all his crap. I guess I’m just a sucker for the old curiosity shop lure of artfully cluttered living spaces. Especially with a bare, sexiful weirdo with a handlebar mustache to ravish in the thick of it all.

by Anonymousreply 20December 24, 2021 6:24 PM

The house plants and vines add an extra element of feeling overwhelmed by the clutter. Plus, there's a dog in there. Nothing wrong with having a dog or cat, but they require more housework.

He seems nice, but his house horrifying (yes, Mary!), IMO. What a waste of a nice apartment.

His kitchen must have been non-functioning, as a kitchen, for them not to show it. I wouldn't be surprised if he eats only takeout.

by Anonymousreply 21December 24, 2021 6:49 PM

I love it! As a fellow maximalist this appeals to me. I would personally lean more towards older Victorian/ Edwardian tchotchkes, but can still appreciate his collection, and I'd love to live in something just like this. I particularly like all the plants, and the space itself is fantastic

by Anonymousreply 22December 24, 2021 7:33 PM

It's like wandering around an old junk shop and smelling all the mold and mildew.

by Anonymousreply 23December 24, 2021 8:04 PM

True.

Most of the stuff is junk. Cheap junk.

No discernment, no curation, no refinement...no eye.

Add all of that stuff together and it's worth about 150 dollars.

by Anonymousreply 24December 24, 2021 8:21 PM

It makes him happy, who cares if it’s cheap stuff? It’s refreshing to see someone with his background embrace everyday stuff.

by Anonymousreply 25December 27, 2021 5:34 PM

My issue with the guy has always been his incredibly loud suits. So, that he has such a cluttered place doesn't surprise me.

by Anonymousreply 26December 27, 2021 5:37 PM

Living in such a cluttered place would suffocate me but to each his own.

I think it’s socially acceptable hoarding to have collectibles everywhere

by Anonymousreply 27December 27, 2021 5:53 PM

The apartment, itself, is beautiful...the high ceilings, woodwork and fireplaces. You can tell it was part of an old, elegant home of someone wealthy at one time...now divided into apartment units. It's a shame that it's cluttered with so much stuff and tchotchkes. To each their own, and I like a lot of things, too...this is a bit much. It makes him happy....so that's all that matters. I like him on AR and wouldn't figure this as his home.

by Anonymousreply 28December 28, 2021 3:58 AM

I feel as though I met my twin!! Omg I love all of it.

by Anonymousreply 29December 28, 2021 4:18 AM

He’s no Evelyn Sakash.

by Anonymousreply 30December 28, 2021 6:58 PM

Anyone know him personally?

by Anonymousreply 31August 23, 2022 2:46 AM

I like him on AR,always have. I just figured he was quirky ,with those suits and all. Imagine my delight to now find him endearing, and dare I say it? sexy man ! His intelligence is a huge turn on.Hes so well spoken. And MUCH cuter than on AR ! Id love to know him .
