Best sides for Buffalo wings?

Not really a wings person but my nephew is coming over for Christmas Eve and he likes very hot ones. I’m happy to make them but I have no idea what the typical sides are thar go with them.

It doesn’t have to be healthy — he has a typical jock’s diet and appetite. Thanks.

Fries, onion rings, veggies and dip, jalapeno poppers, fried pickles. They're just chicken wings.

Blue cheese dressing and never Ranch dressing.

by Anonymousreply 2December 23, 2021 9:11 PM

Mac and cheese or a macaroni salad

I'd agree with R2 about blue cheese being better. Honestly veggies work because they're "cooling" and not so heavy. I mean fries or onion rings are fine - a common side dish, but it's a lot. Not that it sounds like he cares.

Whenever we have chicken wings we either have pizza or potatoes wedges.

If you wanted to add another protein, peel and eat shrimp might be fun. Just lean into the messy hands theme and all.

Is this what your hot nephew looks like, OP?

celery and chunky blue cheese dressing (like r2 said, [bold]never[/bold] Ranch!)

Wings are an appetizer

by Anonymousreply 9December 23, 2021 9:21 PM

Wings don't need anything blue cheese and carrots or celery. Maybe fries or chips.

Just check out a Hooters menu.

Corn on the cob

Ranch dressing is trailer park

Dear God in heaven, these elderly queen answers . . .

As has already been pointed out. Restaurants serve fries, celery + carrot sticks and both ranch and blue cheese. Just because grandpa prefers blue cheese doesn’t mean your guest will.

I really don't think blue cheese vs. ranch is generational.

A list

Wings always came with blue cheese dressing, celery & raw carrots.

by Anonymousreply 17December 23, 2021 9:38 PM

Cherry tomatoes, carrots, and I personally like Rosemary seasoned french fries as a side if I'm going to go all greasy. But any old fries should do.

We serve Buffalo wings over a nice mixed salad (with a light dressing) as a main meal. Some of the juices drip down into the salad and make it taste delicious/less healthy.

Outside of the generational issue. Many people don’t care for strong cheeses. Offering both will solve any potential issues.

Wedge salad would be fun.

by Anonymousreply 21December 23, 2021 9:56 PM

God I love a wedge salad.

by Anonymousreply 22December 23, 2021 9:59 PM

R20 not all blue cheese dressings are created equal. If it’s not too strong it’s sooo good.

Celery and blue cheese is all you need. Wings are heavy as it is. I prefer maple glazed wings though (and I much prefer the actual wing to the leg (in wings, if you’re serving an actual chicken or turkey the leg is my favorite though)

by Anonymousreply 23December 23, 2021 11:07 PM

Ranch is too salty.

Blue cheese isn’t strong at all. It’s pretty neutral tasting.

by Anonymousreply 24December 23, 2021 11:20 PM

OP do you mean actual side dishes? Or accoutrements to the wings?

If you mean side dishes, I would humbly suggest the iconic Frito Pie. Maybe Sonic drivers to your neighborhood?

P.S. fuck the wedge salad. This isn’t steakhouse fare we’re discussing here.

by Anonymousreply 25December 23, 2021 11:39 PM

Potato salad - sounds good to me right now.

by Anonymousreply 26December 23, 2021 11:51 PM

How does Joel take them?

by Anonymousreply 27December 24, 2021 12:10 AM

I prefer blue cheese dressing, but I suspect a lot of people would choose ranch over blue cheese.

Along with the Buffalo wings, I'm thinking sandwiches, like cold cuts, Italian meats, etc.

by Anonymousreply 28December 24, 2021 12:14 AM

Will your nephew be spending the night, OP?
