John Astin

I was sad they didn't find a way to give him a cameo in the new version of West Side Story, since of course he played Glad Hand in the original. Is he senile?

Why didn't the Jets lesbo get a cameo? She's still alive.

I asked about John Astin because like Rita Moreno he is famous for other things and would be recognizable to audiences; the woman who played Anybody's is not and would not.

He’s still alive?!??

by Anonymousreply 3December 23, 2021 6:10 PM

He is, R3. He's 91.

He looked 1000 years old in The Frighteners which was 25 years ago, and he doesn't appear to have done anything (not even voice work) for a few years, so I'm guessing he's not able to work these days.

I think John Astin is actually still teaching acting in the Baltimore/DC area at some college. If not, he was until very recently.

I didn't know he was teaching, R6. I wonder how up to date this page is.

He's White. White actors don't get call backs these days.

From the old **OFFICIAL** SUMMER STOCK THEATER MEMORIES /GOSSIP/DISH THREAD!!!

I sometimes acted as a babysitter. For adults and for children. When John Astin and Patty Duke Astin travelled around with their production of MY FAT FRIEND, they brought their combined families with them, five kids plus a nanny. It was difficult find a place to take them out to eat. They both were very popular from their TV and movie careers, and they insisted on bring the kids with them, so the restaurant had to appeal to the kids’ tastes as well. In the town of Bourne, there was very nice casual restaurant located near a local yacht club. It was the kind of place where you sailed in from Nantucket, had lunch with your other sailing buddies, and then headed out for an afternoon trip to Martha’s Vineyard. I had reserved a table for the family, and when we arrived, despite my request fro a quiet corner, they had placed us in the center of the room.

Mr. Astin sat at the head of the table. Patty sat in the middle of one side of the table, next to her two smallest children (Sean and Mackenzie) and the nanny. I sat on the other side of the table, with the older kids. I had forgotten how demanding and loud kids could be, and the Astin family was no exception. They were a handful. Of course, other patrons began to notice John Astin (he’s very recognizable) and I could hear the whispers and see the heads turn. Now Patty was another matter. She was very tiny, and without makeup looked very young, and she “hid” among the kids. I was annoyed when some guy came over during the middle of the meal, and introduced himself to Mr. Astin. He blustered about how his family loved them, and commented on how nice it was to see the Astins out as a family having their lunch. Mr. Astin smile amicably and said nothing. Then the guy said “I’m really disappointed that your wife’s not here. We loved her in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and in THE MIRACLE WORKER.” Patty was sitting right across from me, her head down, and all the kids participated in this charade with glee. Mr. Astin said “Thank you very much. I’ll be sure to pass on your kind compliments to her.” He the turned to Patty and said “Anna, eat your vegetables!” We all burst out laughing.

I liked him as real estate agent turned murderous sheriff, Harry Pierce on Murder She Wrote.
