I AM the OP, r19, and this is my story.

It started last Monday at 4:46 in the morning. I was having trouble sleeping, so I was on DL. As I read the "Greatest Performances in Film" thread, I decided to post "Alicia Witt in Dune" with a clip of her confronting the Emperor. I was trying to be funny, but I do love her and that scene. See r95 of the attached thread for evidence.

Next thing I know, it's today and I'm running town looking for a Christmas stollen for my sister. As I walked into Whole Foods, my phone sent me an alert that I read as, "Alicia Witt's parents find her dead in her Chicago apartment." I thought that was too much of a coincidence, so yes, I rushed to post something here without reading the whole article.

I actually have a friend who grew up just blocks from this house, it's in the Tatnuck area of Worcester, which is the suburban middle-class "west side" of the city. The parents were aging, preppy-progressive 'beatnik' types that only Wasp-y New England produces (think: Vermont, old Maine). Very eccentric, frugal, independent and disdainful/distrustful of outsiders or anyone offering help - apparently even their own kids.

I'm sure Alicia and her family tried with them, but in all likelihood they refused assistance and didn't take advice. A sad end, if in fact they died of the cold. It really hasn't been that cold in New England so far this winter.

I think he would have been better off if he’d just died. They showed a first responder carrying the old man to a vehicle. It made me think that the old man had a moment of clarity and tried to end his own life and he was probably pissed that someone prolonged it.

Cause of death seems to have been hypothermia. It was a 15°F night in Worcester MA. Yes, the house appears to be in very poor shape, neglected, tarp on the roof, etc. Per various reports the furnace had not been working, so they had a borrowed space heater that obviously couldn't keep up. Not the first time I've seen reports of a reclusive elderly couple who refused help. I wouldn't be so quick to blame Alicia Witt, by all indications she loved her parents. Tragic situation.
