My two pillows are very old and I want to get new ones. What should I get? Foam? Latex? Gel? Anything but down or feathers, as I'm allergic.

Do you sleep on your back, stomach, or side?
For side sleeping, I would recommend the sobakawa (buckwheat) pillow.

Talalay Latex for the win! It's not that shredded shit. It makes a great pillow that doesn't get hot like memory gel, and doesn't stink like cheap latex. It lasts YEARS. I've had mine for going on 15 years now.
This is a great company based in California. They also sell on Amazon. Call them to get help selecting the best pillow for you. Based on if you are a side sleeper, etc. Also how dense you like them. Nice folks.
Not a shill! I swear!

Here is their listing for the pillow I just mentioned on Amazon so you can get a visual sense of it, and read the reviews

My favorite pillows are from CozyPure. They are stuffed with latex noodles (they call them LaNoodles) in a stretch knit cotton shell. They aren't bouncy like solid lates, but since the latex pieces are of a uniform size, they don't compact like shredded latex. They are the closest I have found to feeling like a feather pillow, in terms of the filling being supportive and flowing within the pillow shell, but they aren't noisy, or pokey like feathers can be, animal cruelty isn't a factor, and my feather allergies aren't impacted by latex.
I have some solid tallaly latex pillows that I liked, they were wrapped in wool batting, but prefer the LaNoddles. They come in different fills, including an adjustable version, and a contour version.

Has anyone tried those purple pillows? They look so bizarre.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 22, 2021 4:06 AM |
You should try a pine mattress OP! It'll change your life! Pine pillows are also available.

I only keep 2 kinds of pillows. Down (not feather) and cheap polyester hollow fiber. Those I replace 1x a year. When they are new, I find them to be the best. And cost effective. And its sanitary to get rid of pillows. Down pillows I wash. They hold up at least 5 years.

Breast pillows for sleeping

I'm actually glad you started this thread. Could anyone recommend a pillow for a mixed sleeper? I would say I sleep primarily on my back (maybe 75% of the time), but also sleep on my side and stomach. I'm not a fan of the way memory foam cocoons one's body, so anything that replicates that feeling isn't for me. I also can't stand pillows with a lot of bounce or resistance -- ones that feel like they're pushing back on you. I tend to not like a lot of height in the pillow either. My head sinking into the pillow is great -- I just don't like that memory foam feel of the pillow molding around you. I'm also a hot sleeper so a cooler pillow helps. Honestly, for the right pillow, I don't mind paying a bit extra, too.

R11 - silk or bamboo. Neither are all that washable unfortunately. But they do keep the head cooler.

Pine needle, R11.

Not Mike Lindel’s crap pillows.

I need a flat pillow too. I can't stand those huge ass hotel pillows that envelop your head and make you sleep with it (your head) propped up at a weird angle. Sometimes I just fold a towel and sleep on that. I can barely even find flat/low pillows anymore. WHET flat pillows?

You got a link R8? I googled and am just getting results for pine (i.e. wood) bed frame. Pine mattresses and pillows sounds intriguing and I bet they smell amazing.

I’m a fan of Coop; I bought the Premium Eden earlier this year and have no complaints. As someone who’s always struggled to find a pillow that’s just the right size, I love that I can remove the filling to get the perfect depth for my sleep style. Even though it’s made of a memory foam blend, it’s not too hot, either.

OK I google pine needle mattresses and the first result (literally) was a Datalounge thread from 2018 wherein OP seeks advice on how to sleep comfortably on his pine needle mattress.
Is this an elaborate troll? Do pine needle mattresses even exist?

In Switzerland we have wool and pine chip pillows. Not pine needle. However there are bourgeois-bohemes in Europe who likely have all kinds of very expensive yet crunchy funky bedding. High bourgeois hippy futons are an artform in these parts. With cork and horse hair and organic latex and coconut fibers and the pubic hair of Zoroastrian gender fluid poet/farmers traded on fair-exchange commodity markets in Basel Switzerland.

No they're not, R20.

R22 it keeps getting referred to in this thread as a pine needles pillow, which is quite different from a pine shavings pillow.

Have you tried the new presidential butt-pillow?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 23, 2021 4:44 AM |
Thank you for that link, R22. They have an organic wool "flat" pillow and one of the organic tight-woven cotton pillow protectors that I can no longer find from the usual website. Yay! Might even try the pine shavings one.

Seconding the pillows from Coop Home Goods. I also like down and down alternative from Parachute.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 21, 2022 3:32 AM |
R15 Just buy the cheapest pillows, use them for a while and they'll be flat in no time!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 21, 2022 3:56 AM |
R11 I like really flat pillows, which I think sounds what you may be looking for. My favourite are filled with cotton, and they came with my Bonaldo bed. They're made in Italy. They're the only pillows I've found with cotton fill. Otherwise, I use down. I'm not certain if you can order their cotton pillows separately, but it's worth a try.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 21, 2022 5:32 AM |
R30 I use Cozypure latex pillows, and they used to have wool and cotton filled pillows (they once sent me a cotton filled pillow in error.) I just checked, and it looks like they don't sell them anymore.
I did find the one linked below. I am not familiar with this company, so I can't vouch for them, but it was the only one that I found while looking

Don't pillows stuffed with buckwheat hulls crunch every time you move your head?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 24, 2022 3:51 AM |
My neck is killing me, so I must change pillows. Have tried them all. Currently, I use to down pillows I stole from the Hampton Inn. But, I have also tried tempur-pedic. Any suggestions?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 23, 2022 10:22 PM |
Down is de luxe. But if you buy down pillows$$$, make sure the manufacturer has a Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certificate, to assure you won’t be resting your head each night on tortured goose or duck remains.
